Quote:
Prompt 9 - Disappearances in the Village: As people confront the creature, or as their shelters are compromised, people will begin to disappear. In the night, you may hear the creature attacking someone or something, but the overwhelming fear and trepidation it radiates is capable of paralyzing even the bravest of warriors, making it difficult to help or investigate until morning. Searching for clues yields nothing, except sometimes damaged shelters and anything the missing may have dropped. No matter where you search, you cannot seem to locate where they have gone or what has happened to them.

It was safe to say that Shaowei had not handled what had happened to her and her companion well; though she had escaped unharmed, he hadn't made it. She'd waited until the sun had come up of course, and then quietly picked her way back to their normal sanctuary only to discover that in the end, he wasn't there either. She'd been given no other choice than to deliver the bad news at that stage and it had gone down about as well as anyone would have expected in the given circumstances.

In short, not well.

Unsurprisingly the days that had followed had been spent gathering supplies as well as attempting to retrace steps and find evidence of the whereabouts of their lost companion. Sadly she had yet to discover anything and it was safe to assume that the others hadn't either or they would have provided the details by now. Nevertheless that didn't mean she was inclined to give up just yet and she wasn't entirely alone in that either. A stubborness drove her to continue her search and it was for that reason that she could be found outside today.

Picking her way through battered and fallen buildings in an attempt to find anything that might help. Perhaps if she were to discover something, even if it wasn't her companion's, then she might be able to track and trace that to something of greater importance. They'd never managed to find bodies so maybe they were out there somewhere and that was what drove her on.

...She hadn't given consideration that she might find a collection of corpses somewhere, but in this current climate, it was probably for the best that she was more inclined to fixate on the more postive of endings.

Upon realizing that this monster intended to trap them in this village for longer than a couple hours, Sawtooth had almost immediately decided that he neither wanted nor needed help from anyone else. Some people might not be able to function on their own. Some people might need protection and reassurance from a group. Chores would be easier when divided between multiple people. Maybe a group could even keep the creature at bay, while one person certainly wouldn't be able to.

But Sawtooth didn't know or trust anyone here. He wasn't about to be that page that'd make good bait for the creature because everyone of higher stages could outrun him. He didn't want to assume it was safe to trust any chaos persons just because they were all stuck here together, only for them to stab him in the face the first chance they got.

It seemed safer to just be quiet and unobtrusive and alone. He could rely on himself for his safety and wellbeing and not fall into trusting the judgements and habits of strangers. He didn't have to get attached to anyone, or worry about anyone else's needs.

Just his own.

Besides, he could take care of himself. He'd gotten all his Boy Scout badges. He knew how to scavenge for food in the wilderness and erect a suitable shelter and sanitize anything he may need to put in his mouth. This place wasn't even that bad. They weren't trapped on a mountainside or anything. There were houses and supplies here, already! He'd be fine on his own, only worrying about taking care of himself.

That was just the safest option.

When word got around that people were disappearing, Sawtooth felt resolved in his decision. When people were in a group, it only took a mistake from one person to ******** up everyone with them. At least if the monster found Sawtooth, he wouldn't be able to blame anyone but himself.

But since people were still going missing several weeks in, he had to assume they'd had caches of supplies already set aside, and if they were just there, not being used, waiting for someone to take them, Sawtooth figured he may as well not waste an opportunity. He hadn't found much by the time he realized he wasn't alone, though.

There was a girl picking her way amidst the rubble. Sawtooth almost completely ignored the sensation of other auras around him, now, since it was practically constant with so many powered people being trapped in a relatively small area. It was the sound of scuffling stones that drew his attention to her, and the most obvious thing about her was that she was something-something chaos.

Probably not someone he was going to take his eyes off, then.

"Hey," he called, making sure she knew that he was aware of her. No surprises here. "You looking for something?"

She'd seen the benefit in finding allies early on, if only because her own abilities had been so unreliable and dangerous to use. One moment they would work, the next they wouldn't, and when it came to surviving against something mean that put her at a disadvantage. Nevertheless with that decision came the inevitable bonds that developed and the ultimate feeling of guilt when something went wrong. It was that guilt that plagued her now as she picked through the various bits of rubble for any sign of life or even an indication that someone had been there.

The arrival of someone new had at least clicked on her radar, she was still aware of the differing auras here and there, but given they were always peppered in such close range she had dismissed them early on. No one really fought here, not really, something about the violence woke up that thing in the depths of the forest and when it arrived everything took a rather horrific turn for the worse.

...Just like a few nights ago.

Still, his decision to speak out across the ever present shuffling of stones wasn't something she'd ignore. She had manners and even after all this time she still knew how to use them. She might have dulled in enthusiasm in many respects, but there were some things she refused to lose and this was one of them. A moment of pause in her search and she turned her head, affording Sawtooth a quick look before she replied to his question. She didn't recognise him but like everyone else he was likely to have to been thrown here at the same time. How he'd taken to surviving was his own business, even if he'd selected the solitary option.

"Someone," she replied at last and rolled her shoulders in a loose shrug. "Limited success though," she admitted and returned her attention to the rubble, moving away from the pile she had been at and towards another. "If you're looking for other things though you won't find any competition from me," she added.

"My group have enough to take care of ourselves, no reason to hoard it," she finished.

As his fingers skimmed over useless debris and fallen stone, Sawtooth's attention held on the girl from the corner of his eye. She seemed intent on minding her own business more than him, and that suited the page just fine. No reason for him to draw more attention to himself besides enough for her to know he was there, so she wouldn't think he was popping out of the woodwork to get her, or anything.

The reasons for her presence were pretty bleak, but the situation was bleak for literally everyone there. Nothing for anyone to do about it. If she was searching for a person through the rubble, the only thing she could conceivably find was a body, though judging from whispers down the grapevine, he doubted she'd find even that.

"Sucks," he said. They could at least agree on that much.

He decided he didn't need to bother her with anything else. She was clearly already judging him for his apparent "hoarding" tendencies, and he was decent enough not to snap at a woman probably grieving over whoever she'd lost, so he moved further from her to inspect scattered and discarded utensils amidst the debris. Anything particularly sturdy and blunt was basically a weapon, and one in Sawtooth's possession was one that wasn't in anyone else's.

Perhaps a misunderstanding as she hadn't been judging him for anything, merely stating that her own companions weren't inclined to take more than they needed where others might have done so. Given there was no use in stressing over someone's interpretations of her own phrasing though, it was in her best interests to keep nudging the debris with her foot here and there for any semblance of evidence.

Everyone was tense, a large proportion of each group hated each other, and given she was fairly confident they were both in 'opposing' factions, it really wouldn't have surprised her if he had automatically assumed she was implying the worst. Whomever or whoever had decided to cast them all in to this world had done so for sport at this point and she was rather impressed that the majority of individuals hadn't cracked. Credit where it was due, they were showing significant restraint.

"Is there anything you need in particular?" She asked after a moment. "I might have seen it on the way passed," she offered. Not that she was having much success with her own things so she might as well be useful, right?

A sigh escaped him, and Sawtooth looked up from the rubble, and back to the woman dressed in black. He didn’t know her well enough to be sure if it was the norm for her or not, but there was a certain aura of… defeat circulating. She was searching for someone who’d been lost, and he was too selfish to even offer any assistance. She wasn’t too selfish, even if his mind did prefer to paint her in such a way as judging-

But she’d asked if she could help him, even though he was only looking out for himself.

And if he wasn’t going to help her, he shouldn’t be so self-absorbed as to take up any more of her time. “No, nothing,” he admitted with a brisk shake of his head, shaggy and unkempt curls bouncing. “Nothing in particular- just anything that might make all this easier.” He had to pause, watching her, convincing himself that he did want to simply back off- it wasn’t weakness for him to go pillage other ruins and let her have these. It wasn’t a detriment to him to yield this area to her so that she could maybe find some clue about someone she’d lost.

Sawtooth wasn’t quite able to be selfless enough to convince himself to help (he had to get home, had to, his daughter was waiting, and he had to focus more on his survival than anyone else’s. A Chaos girl’s allies were probably Chaos themselves- he would not help them so they could backstab him later. He had to get home), but he could leave her in peace.

“I’ll head off from here. I hope you’re able to find something, and if it means anything, I’ll keep an eye out,” Sawtooth offered. That was the most he could do.

It wasn’t the friendliest course of action, but he was keeping rapt attention on the circumstances, anyway. If he did see anything that could help her locate someone… But he probably wouldn’t, and it wouldn’t matter. With a little shake of his head, he left the woman to continue scouring the rubble alone.

One of the many things she would learn in time and become acutely aware of would be the suspicion that opposing sides had of one another. Regardless of her personal views or her opinion of the conflicts between parties, worlds and concepts, the division had long been sown and she would never be guaranteed a warm welcome. The future was uncertain in terms of how she might adjust to that unwavering truth, but for now she would continue as she was and respect each individuals preference. On this occasion Sawtooth very much had little interest in spending much time in her presence or accepting a hand of friendship despite their circumstances.

It was disappointing.

It was a shame.

"Okay," she replied with a small nod and a bleak smile. "If you change your mind you're more than welcome," she added. Her hand waved just a touch in final farewell and as he took his leave she returned to her fruitless search. She would spend a few more moments here, then likely move on, closer to the outskirts on the off chance that something may have been left there or someone might know more. It was unlikely, if no one else had found their lost friends then what chance did she have? A painful optimism was unwelcome in some circles but if she lost all sense of hope then she would struggle to maintain some sense of who she was, and so, the search continued.

She could only hope that Sawtooth didn't meet the same end as her companion and that he remained safe as he walked an otherwise lonely path through this desolate little world they now 'lived' in. Or, at the very least, she hoped that he found individuals he could trust if he found himself in a bind and needed someone to cast him a rope.
