He hefted the package again, a simple white box marked in silver clouds from the craftsman. He’d been the one to add the ribbon, a soft blue with silver stars and a golden moon at random intervals. That, of course, was just the dressing. It was what was inside the box, though, the thing that was bringing the grin to his face though he tried hard to suppress it. He walked with a spring in his step, a hurried gate of wanting to see the reaction on Qingcheng’s face when he opened it. Most people would have laughed to know that Laojun, known best for his darker sense of humor, sharp temper, and rough ways, had purchased such a sentimental gift.
“Qingchen!” He shouted in greeting the second he caught sight of the fluttering white robes and trailing translucent rainbow smattered with stars. “Qingchen! Here!” He called. “I brought something!”

Laojun had been Qingcheng’s best friend since the beginning. Or at least, he was the first friend that he could remember getting...and for that, there would be nothing that would cause the Cosmos Squire to leave his friend. With a slight smile--more expression than he normally showed, the silver haired Squire raised an eyebrow, tossing his mane back behind him. His hair swept the floor, causing an extra tripping hazard along with his robes and sash.
“I hope that it’s a new hair ornament so we can get this under control again.”
The smile turned into a smirk, but the male’s multicolored eyes were as warm as the stars. “I missed you. Tell me, is this more food from one of your haphazard adventures? You know I dislike surprises.”
Well. Most surprises. When the other Squire had first kissed him...that had been a surprise which he had liked very much. Though he had done his best to act otherwise.
Qingcheng’s eyes roamed over the box and he nodded in approval at the wrapping. “I’m going to assume that you picked the ribbon, and I’m going to hope that you’ll use it on my hair.” Even if that was the only part of the surprise...he would be happy with it.
He’d be happy if his Laojun gave him one of his toenails, if he were going to be honest.

“It’s us.” He grinned “so it’s not a surprise, but I’ll use the ribbon in your hair if you’ll agree to open it. He pinched a corner of the ribbon and waved a hand towards a bench. “Sit! I’ll put your hair up, you can open your gift, and then I’ll treat you to some of the food from my glorious misadventures.” “I’m going to have the next craftsman make you the longest and prettiest hair sticks so that you can twist it up and pin it into place easier. He reached out his free hand and teased slender fingers though the long silvery sweep. His own hair was a darker shade, like a faded black just touched by blue. It was held back by black metal ornately shaped at the ends into black spirals and curls.

Now, just what did that mean? Qingcheng gave his partner a very confused look, but made his way to the bench, tossing his hair behind him so that he wasn’t sitting on any part of it. “Hairsticks would be very useful, but. You know I am hopeless at doing my hair in anything other than this. Which is to say, I can brush and wash it. Honestly, I wish that it was not obligated to keep it so long.”
It was one of the customs of his wonder that the most hair that one was to cut was no more than an inch per year, and that was simply to keep it healthy. Other than that, it had to remain uncut.
It was a hassle, and he hated the tradition. “If I had my way. It would not be past my shoulders, Laojun.” He eagerly waited for the male to begin playing with his hair, even going so far as to withdraw a star shaped comb from the pouch at his waist. “Here you are. You know how I like it.”
His interest in what was in the box was thoroughly aroused but, getting his hair put up was far more important at this moment

He took the comb and started carefully separating the long hair into sections, half to either side so that he could gently and carefully begin to put it into a fishtail braid. It would take more than enough time for Qingcheng to open the box and explore the contents but it would hold well, and it could be curled back and pinned with the comb. The box slid open and revealed carefully folded paper, dark purple and little silver clock designs. Folding it back however reveled a pair of dolls, one with hair like tarnished silver, the other as pale as cobwebs. One dressed in purples and greys - the other in white and pastels. “See? It’s us!” He said peering over your shoulder. “Now, even when we’re apart, we’re together. They are designed so if anything happens the other will know, it’ll reflect on the doll! Since I’m forever wandering about, I thought it would be an excellent gift.” He laughed. “Sadly it can’t tell you when I find food.”

Oh goodness. He hadn’t been kidding at all. It was dolls that resembled both of them, and Qingcheng couldn’t quite tell if he was pleased, amused or uncomfortable by them. But...the idea of knowing if anything were to have happened to Laojun…
With long, thin fingers, he pulled the doll of his partner into his hands and examined it, stroking the hair and giving a small smile at the details that were on the thing. “I...think, perhaps, I enjoy this gift. I can carry you around in my bag, and I do like that a lot.”
It was difficult not to sigh in bliss as his hair was carefully braided up, and the softest of noises did manage to escape. “You have the most gentle touch, you know. My Laojun. Nobody ever treats my hair so gently. Thank you, for the gift and the gift of your company that you provide me so often. It is always appreciated.”
He paused and smirked slightly, holding the doll close for a moment. “I suppose I will forgive you for the food. This time.”

“The location of the food is only part of my evil plan to lure you closer to my chambers. After all, if anyone caught wind that I am so gentle with hair, my reputation would be utterly ruined.” He teased, leaning close enough that the words feathered against the curve of Qingcheng’s ear. “… I will admit they are not quite as cute as I imagined; it’s a little too recognizable as me; I’m not trying to inflict nightmares on you.” He chuckled. “But I do wish you could put me into your bag and take me with you, pull me out to do your hair, and surprise anyone who dares try and flirt with you. I’m sure it must happen so often you’re quite immune, but that won’t make me an ounce less jealous of your time and company.”

“Oh, is that truly it?” Qingcheng gave a soft, amused laugh. “...I didn’t realize that you were such a scoundrel, luring someone sounds so despicable. Also, the secrets of your gentle hairstyling is something that I will take to my grave, thank you very much. You are the only being in the universe who can touch my hair and not get an arm broken for it.”
He rolled his eyes and stroked the cheek of the doll that he still held. “The only nightmares that this doll will give me is when I miss you too strongly and it doesn’t hug me in return.” His voice was soft, full of a deep emotion that was very rare for the Squire.
“Nobody ever bothers flirting with me. I’m far too cold and unapproachable for that, you should know that, my LaoLao.” His eyes shifted to look at the male, and there was a teasing smile playing about his lips.

“Mmm… but My starlight, you’re so beautiful. I know they all dream about you.” He teased in turn. “But they can’t catch you, none of them know that secret, and I will never tell. I’m too sharp and too angry for them; I need someone as perfect as you to temper me.” He slid his arms around Qingchen’s waist and murmured. “This scoundrel will have to find the enchantments that will let me hug you through a doll, then it will be me, even if my arms are terribly small. I will just have to love you enough to reach; I’m sure I must be close to that already.” He placed a kiss on the man’s face and drew back enough to tie the ribbon carefully in place before gently lifting and twisting the braid to pin it carefully with the comb so it would stay. “A blessing perhaps that we are each assigned the wonder that we are; if I had yours, I’d have broken the tradition ages ago; I’ve only patience for your hair, and little enough for my own.”

Qingcheng felt his heart fluttering, and gave a satisfied sigh at the words, and the kiss. The very feeling of Laojun being close to him like this...it was almost intoxicating. “You’re right, of course. I would never allow anyone to catch me, only you, my Moonbeam. Only ever you.”
He gave his head a little shake, both pleased and annoyed with how his hair felt. There was just so much of it. Too much. And it was so heavy. But now...he wouldn’t trip over it at the very least. “Yes, well I must admit, if you had the hair I did, I would get annoyed with trailing my fingers through it. There’s only so much you can do that...and when you only find more hair it begins to go far beyond discouraging…”
Reaching up, he tugged a strand of the Saturn Squire’s hair and sighed. “...When must you leave me again?”

“I can think of a few things to do with all that hair.” Murmured Laojun, a wicked glint in his eyes. “It might be a bit tangled when I was done though, some…terrible knots. You’re not the only one who can be clever with them.” he took a deep breath and let it out. “Well… I am on call, though it’s been quiet enough. So I think I can offer at least tonight, after that… well. It’s like catching starlight.” He paused and thought for a moment. “I keep meaning to ask… What happens if something were to happen to your hair, an accident… sparring say.”

“Certain death, I’m sure.” Qingcheng’s voice was bland, though there was some amusement inside of it. “I’m sure that the mountain would either swallow me up, return my starseed to the cauldron in disgrace...or simply the elders here would toss me off the side for being a complete and utter disgrace. Those of Qingcheng are peaceful. We don’t participate in violent activities. We keep all of the light in the world, and seeking strength to simply gain power is utterly forbidden.”
The words were obviously repeated often, and the Squire looked bored at having to say them again. “It would be convenient though. If I could lose it that way but…”
He wore a soft smile and shook his head. “...It isn’t something that can be done at this moment in time. Perhaps...one day. When I can pass the mantle of knighthood down to my heir...ah.”
Provided that he would have any heirs. “...They’re starting to push for an arranged marriage. I’m not sure to whom yet but.” Qingcheng lowered his head. “...I figured that I should tell you before it happens.”

He was on the verge of some joke, some tease about possibly engaging in the fine art of shaping hedges so he could cause some … terrible ‘accident’ to sheer off a few of those deeply beautiful inches. The mention of marriage though, that clearly stole his breath away. He froze, fingers closing possessively over fine shoulders. “… I suppose, I am… I am far too degenerate to apply, I … am not pure enough after all to touch you.” His breath shuddered out in a sigh. “… How long?” He whispered, and then with determination. “And… please, let me know because I will fight them for you.”

Qingcheng shrugged, his eyelids lowering in a way that made him look tired. Aloof. Unapproachable. It was his normal expression. His ‘public’ expression. “I’m not sure when. It’s not that you’re a degenerate at all. You simply can’t provide me with any heirs.” He sighed and shrugged. “...To be honest, I wish I could simply...produce heirs with someone and live my own life with the one that I choose to be with. It isn’t fair that I have to marry anyone…”
Pausing, the Squire gave a little chuckle. “...Your sister wouldn’t be willing, would she? At least...then my child would have your blood, my Laojun…”
And Sava was unlikely to want to get married to him, knowing and approving of their relationship as she did. “...The elders wouldn't allow it though,” Qingcheng said after another moment’s thought. “They don’t want me marrying with another knight. They want the starseed line to be assured. What a bother.”

He let out a low snarl. “What an outdated ideal, so barbaric for such a beautiful line.” His fingers squeezed before he caught himself at risk of bruising the beautiful skin. “How dare they… what kind of …” He gritted his teeth and let out a breath. “I can still fight them.” He said after a tense moment. “What could they do if we got married despite them mmm? It’s not as though you lack family all together.”
