Quote: Confronting the Creature (1) : Everything about this place tells you that you should not be out at night. The forest turns wicked, a horrible fog rolls in, and a monstrous creature stirs. But you, for whatever reason, decided to be out late. Perhaps you thought you could hunt the creature, or solve some mystery, or perhaps you were simply unlucky. Either way, the creature has found you. This must be a battle, and you must quote the shop mule, Beckoning Chaos, if you wish to pursue this plot. A moderator or GM will be assigned to RP the creature in this roleplay. You may manage to escape into a building if you are close enough into town, however if you manage to do this you will spend the rest of the evening with the creature tormenting you, banging on the house and trying to break in; you will suffer horrible hallucinations and be plagued with paranoia and fear until morning. If you do not manage to seek shelter, or if you would like the creature to break into your shelter, the creature will defeat you in battle and you will pass out. You cannot defeat the monster, but you may learn something about it in battle. If you lose, you will be taken to a cellar with other prisoners and held outside of the city. Please see the below prompt for more information!

When Ilmare had first grabbed Saiph to yank her into the little hut she'd laid claim to, she hadn't really registered that she'd (quite probably) saved the life of a chibi senshi. She'd just seen a terrified little kid racing like hellfire for safety from the thing that went Bump Skree Crunch in the night. She knew that she should hate the kid. Certainly, she disliked the fact that some ******** cat had decided it was perfectly fine to recruit a goddamned baby to fight.
But Saiph, in her all innocent way, had described the event and Ilmare found herself grudgingly like the cat who'd argued against creating a child soldier. Of course, that cat had allowed herself to be over-ruled, but Ilmare could respect a kitten who had tried. At least it meant that some cats had a sense of decency.
And Saiph herself took everything so seriously. She was determined to be a hero and help people. And as far as Ilmare could determine from their nighttime chats, Saiph had precisely zero interest in using her space alien powers to try and conquer Earth. She only wanted to help.
Take now, the corrupt senshi thought as she twisted her hair back out of her face. The kid wants to make sure that everyone has enough to eat. And because I don't want to see a cute kid get eaten, I'm out here with her trying to harvest. Wild.
Glancing at the darkening skyline Ilmare shivered and whistled, waving her arm so the kid could see.
"All right Farmer Brown," she called cheerfully. "Time to grab what we've got and head back. Let's move it out!"
---
Saiph paused in her gathering of whatever leftover foodstuff she could find and waved her own arm to let Ilmare know that she'd heard and understood. She liked the other senshi. Even if she felt wrong and had holes where holes shouldn't be. Ilmare let her braid her long hair and she sang to help Saiph block out the noises the monster made. She'd been a little shocked by how disapproving the older girl had been the morning after her rescue. But after a long talk, the two had reached an accord of sorts.
And Ilmare was so quiet about her own life though she'd questioned Saiph closely about how and why she was a senshi. After everything, the little girl had to conclude that Ilmare didn't think kids should have to fight and was sad about it.
Sighing a little and folding what food she'd found up in a bit of old cloth, Saiph hurried to the older girl. Neither of them liked to go too far from the village. And she was afraid that they'd stayed out too long this time.

In pairs of one or two, in groups small or large, it was not safe to be out when the sun was fading. The village might not be far away, but all it took was the blink of an eye and suddenly it seemed like a fresh wall of trees had sprouted between the senshi and their safety. A coldness descended upon the two well before the expectation of darkness. In the far corners of the forest, a haze began to swell. Misty white walls billowed in, trailing towards them. The trees shifted ominously and the shadows darkened too quickly to be natural. Cold eyes bore into them, but there was nobody in sight. The sense of danger lurked in the air and seemed to come crashing down upon them in an instant.

Shivering as the unnatural cold touched her skin, Ilmare's eyes shifted quickly, taking in the growing shadows and billowing mist. Oh yeah, they'd overstayed what little welcome they'd had. Keeping her face as calm as possible, she closed the little distance that existed between herself and Saiph and seized the little girl's hand. She hated that she was going to have to do this. She knew how tired she was. And by extension how much more tired Saiph would be. But right now, she was the grown up (urgh! awful thought!) and the safety of a child was her responsibility.
"Okay sweetheart," she murmured, "I need you to listen to me and do as I say right now. Can you do that for me? It's very important."
---------
Saiph jumped s little as the older senshi grabbed her hand and spoke in a low, earnest voice. She knew that kind of tone. Her mother used it often. Usually when she was about to say something that she knew her little daughter would not like. And Ilmare was asking her to simply obey. Grown ups only did that when something was very, very wrong.
Glancing around, she felt like something very bad was watching them, but she couldn't see anything except mist and shadows. Had the shadows been that long before? She wasn't sure, but she didn't like it. Feeling her heart beginning to thud in her chest, Saiph turned to look up at Ilmare's too-calm expression. Nodding in answer to the older girl's question, Saiph whispered back, "The monster's here, isn't it. What... what should I do?"
She saw a flicker of relief on Ilmare's face that she would listen and then watched relief turn into fear. And when Ilmare's hand tightened almost painfully on her own as they heard branches crack, Saiph stayed silent. The pain didn't matter right now. She began to open her mouth, to ask what they should do when Ilmare jumped and began to move, dragging Saiph along.
"Run," she heard the older girl yell as she followed close behind. "Run fast and don't look back!"

Running might have saved them from what was behind them, but it did little when the creature could move with the mist. It swallowed them up, burying them in a cold sheet of white. In the blink of an eye, tall and dark as any of the trees in the forest, the monster was suddenly in front of them. It's eyes were black and gleamed from their shadowy hollows. It feathered tail trembled behind it before it rose slowly, plumage spreading like a great wall of darkness, and a hundred eyes just staring into them. It blocked their path almost completely, and the creature's talons twitched, clawed fingers curled inward and then outwards as it advanced on the senshi.

Skidding to a sudden stop as both monster and mist blocked their path, Ilmare felt Saiph crash into her and stumbled, but still managed to keep herself between the monster and child. It wasn't right that something so big could move so quickly and so quietly. As the corrupt senshi felt panic welling up, she could only stare at those gleaming eyes and shudder as the feathered tail fanned out and increased the sensation of watchful eyes.
But she had a kid to protect and she reached one arm back to wrap around Saiph and pull her close. She could also see that the path wasn't completely blocked and she didn't want the monster to realize that it had left them an out no matter how tiny. She just wished she could figure out how to communicate this to the chibi senshi. Finally, she decided on a simple feint and prayed it would work. Moving quickly, she bolted forward, pulling Saiph along sharply before swerving to the side and managing, somehow, to yank the little girl up into her arms before switching direction again and running flat out for the empty space just between monster and trees.
Then, with a whispered prayer, she dove, sliding along the ground and was shocked to hear Saiph shouting and sending out her tiny magic against the monster at point blank range.
-----------
As terrified as Saiph was, she couldn't help but admire how Ilmare kept moving in spite of her own fear. Clinging tightly o the older girl's side, she saw the possible escape a few moments before Ilmare and had already decided that as weak as it was, her own magic would be the most useful. If she could get close enough, she might be able to give them slightly better odds against the monster. And as she was preparing to reach up to tug at the older girl's sleeve, she felt herself yanked forward. She wailed softly as Ilmare dragged her away from the little gap in the path and then, found herself yanked up and into Ilmare's arms before the corrupt senshi carried her where they needed to go. Marveling at the other's strength, Saiph clung like a barnacle to Ilmare's neck.
And when the older senshi threw herself for the little opening that both had noticed, Saiph howled out her magic, thinking that with them nearly under the monster, they were certainly close enough for the magic to maybe knock the monster off balance just long enough.
"Tail Thrash!" she cried, feeling Ilmare skid along the path before somehow getting them both to their feet to continue running.
Saiph could only hope her magic would help.
Beckoning Chaos Sailor Scout Attack: Tail Thrash Effects - Able to be summoned 3 times per battle and lasting for about 15 seconds each, Saiph is able to call up a faintly glowing energy shape that (seems unable to make up its mind if it’s an ancient fish, lizard or… other creature) delivers a blow to one enemy target. At this stage, it is the sensation of a shove and is capable of causing an enemy to stumble or possibly fall depending on where the blow lands.

The creature moved after them like it was nothing; they were nearing the buildings that would provide shelter and so it seemed to be a bit more frantic to catch them. The magic seemed to startle it, but it was already a little jostled at the prospect of losing its targets. Initially, it seemed to be attempting to ignore the magic, either because it was oblivious to what was happening or because it didn't see it as a threat--or maybe, it was truly just so focused on them. It was the creature's downfall, even if only just temporarily. The magic hit it just barely enough to knock it slightly off balance, and with the momentum it had built up, it sent it flying off the path--buying them a few extra seconds to get ahead. The beast slammed into a tree, but that wouldn't hold it for long; it was trying to pry its great antlers from it, but it seemed to be on the path to quickly righting itself.

Ilmare couldn't have said where she found her second wind and the strength to roll to her feet all while carrying Saiph and then start running again. All she knew was that if she wanted to escape and keep the kid safe (oh god), this was simply a thing she had to do. Stumbling slightly and feeling a soft warmth along her side where skin had slid against pebble-y earth, she wondered if she'd hurt herself.
She was already half convinced that she was about to feel claws in her back before she could get the two of them to some form of shelter. But the cottages on the very edge of the village were so close. It was just a little further...
----------
From her vantage in Ilmare's arms, Saiph watched in terrified delightas her magic gave them the chance they needed. Though she honestly hadn't expected it to send the creature off the path and into a tree. As she watched it struggle to free itself, she let out a howl of laughter.
"It worked! Ilmare, my magic worked, it's stuck in a tree!" she called out as she bounced slightly in the other girl's arms.
"That's great, kid," she heard Ilmare pant. "Please don't get cocky."
Saiph didn't know the word, but she understood the meaning. Growing quiet and watchful, she saw the monster tear free and come after them. Whimpering softly, she closed her eyes, not wanting to see the moment they were caught.
Except, she instead felt Ilmare jerk something hard and found herself being slung to the ground. Eyes popping open, she saw walls around them and Ilmare fighting to get the door closed and barricaded.
Wordlessly, Saiph threw her own small body against the door, helping to close it as Ilmare grabbed for the lockbar and slid it into place just barely in time.

The beast's body weight slammed against the door only a few seconds after they had completely barricaded it. It threw itself, again, and again, desperately clawing at the door. Despite the creature's raw strength, the door held fast, and at one point in time it even seemed to hiss as though something had hurt it. In a last ditch effort, it screamed so loudly that the entire house shook, and though it was so loud it could cause piercing headaches, or stabbing pain, the house held fast. It lingered in the area, wailing and clawing occasionally, and the sensation of dread persisted through the evening. At that point in time, only one thing mattered... Not completely trusting the lockbar, Ilmare braced her back against the door, shaking like a leaf as she felt the monster repeatedly throw itself against the door. Even though she suspected that her normally pale complexion had taken on a ghostly pallor, she tried to smile bravely at Saiph as the little girl worked hard to drag furniture over to help build a stronger barricade.
"Well, I guess they made this place pretty sturdy, huh?" she said far too casually, her eyes going wide as panic and dread set in. She had to keep it together, after all. How would she keep Saiph safe if she was curled into a sobbing ball?
When the monster screamed though, Ilmare nearly jumped out of her skin before throwing herself at Saiph and crouching over the child senshi, holding her close and trying to cover the kid's ears.
"It'll be all right," she muttered. "We'll be all right, promise."
-----------------
Working hard, Saiph felt tears of sheer terror tracing steadily down her cheeks. She didn't understand how Ilmare could stand it all. Though... her skin had gone really white, so maybe she was just as scared as Saiph was. And her eyes had gotten so big that Saiph could see the whites even in the gloom of the cottage.
She paused for a moment when Ilmare spoke and tried to smile bravely back at the older girl. Shaking a little, she tried to keep busy somehow, een though she could feel herself becoming more and more scared as the monster outside kept attacking the cottage.
She let out a shriek of her own when the monster screamed. Falling to her knees, she cried freely, trying to cover her ears. She was vaguely aware of Ilmare rushing at her and felt the older girl holding her close and kind of hovering right over her. She knew Ilmare was saying something, but all she could hear were her own ragged sobs and the cottage shaking under the power of that scream.
Even when the screaming stopped, she stayed with Ilmare, clinging to the older girl. At some point, the little senshi dropped into the uneasy sleep of pure exhaustion. And when she woke up, she was curled against the corrupt senshi and the monster was gone.
Sitting up a little and rubbing at tear crusted eyes, she looked at the other girl and found herself answering Ilmare's weak smile. They'd made it. They were going to be okay.
