Quote: You need to eat. There are archaic cooking utensils and a well in the middle of town. There is an array of fruits, mostly apples, hanging from some trees, and there are several different types of berries that grow around the forest. There are unkempt gardens in a few of the houses, and a larger one with an array of crops that seem to be free for the taking, just by what seems to be an abandoned--locked--church. In some houses, and in a strange storage room in town, there seems to be unidentifiable dried meat. There are no packed or processed foods--only what nature permits. There are no animals to hunt. You can choose to eat any of such food, but at what cost? Are you fortunate enough to feel no effects? Are you struck with some toxic poisoning that fades after a bit? Do you feel rejuvenated, but at the cost of feeling incredibly paranoid and off? Food and effects are player choice, however should not grant any boosts in battle or extreme advantages into gameplay; if you have questions about what you can find or what effects it can have, please post in the MQ&A It was safe to say that Athalia didn't mind being adventurous with his food when he knew it was safe, but when it came to unknown and potentially alien locations where every little thing usually considered you fair game, he was a little more sceptical. Unfortunately, when the first evening had passed and they had woken up here again it became apparent that he'd have to park the concerns at the door.
If they were stuck here until they could work out how to get back then it served to reason that survival now took priority. When it came to surviving you needed shelter, food, water and heat. They had managed (after debate) to find shelter, and now that they had the food and water had been regarded as his next set of key priorities.
...But yes, he'd also work on the heat a little later.
With this in mind he had struck out first thing in the morning to locate something that could be eaten. It seemed he hadn't been alone in this though, he'd noticed that Shaowei had flounced off in the general direction of the middle of the town and as for some of the Mauvians, it was fair to assume he wasn't entirely sure where they had run off to either.
With his thumbs slung into his sash though, he had his gaze set on the orchards and the set of fields that lay just outside the village. They had fallen in to disrepair as well, but if he was going to find anything useable he'd start out there and work his way in. Maybe the orchard would have something? Given the right conditions they would maintain themselves even if the lawns became overgrown and difficult to traverse so it would be as good a chance as any...

When it came to food, Metis tried to be adventurous. Tried. Being sensitive to strong odors, particularly powerful tastes could also be an appetite killer for her. Overly salty foods were also out, along with extremely bitter flavors. But then, she had a rather notorious sweet tooth among her family.
Somehow, she wasn't entirely expecting them to come across a heap of sugar or sweets though out here.
But they did need to eat. She thought back to different historically set stories she'd read, both fictional and non. Salted meats were usually a big thing, preserved from the last butchering harvest--usually in January. Unless they had meats from hunting, but still portions would be preserved for later meals. After all, hunting and harvesting were rarely viable options in the dead of winter. October would mean foods were being harvested from the crops, meaning fresh vegetables would be an option. Others would be preserved or stored in root cellars.
All of the information was valid and useful, sure, but Metis frowned. How sure could they be that the food that was around, was even really safe? Could any of the vegetables be diseased?
In the house, they'd found a root cellar, and within, portions of dried, salted meat. "If we can cut off the layers of salt, it'll be editable," she'd told her housemates when they investigated their finds. "We'll just need to cook it up properly... if there's any large enough pots, we could make stew easily enough." Jars of veggies had also been present--Realta had hated the strong smell of salts and preserving liquids, but had at least been able to help her identify the substances within. Carrots, squash, corn, potato. Usual staples.
She'd kept the various contents of the root cellar in mind even as they drifted off to sleep, unsure what the next morning would bring. Sure, she hoped to find herself back in Destiny City, away from this insanity. The creepy atmosphere was already making her skin crawl.
But she awoke to Realta snuggled up to her on the bed they'd decided to take as their own, upstairs in the house they'd all eventually agreed upon. The small room was more than functional, considering she wasn't planning on spending much time there.
Though as Metis groaned and sat up, aware of the fact she was still in her uniform... she couldn't help but wonder how they were supposed to deal with hygine. Her nose wrinkled. She and the Mauvians might become more uncomfortable with things than others, sooner rather than later.
As Realta headed out who knows where for her exploration, Metis had hesitated only a moment before following after Athalia. Shaowei was at least heading for the center of town. It was harder to be concerned when there was a higher chance of other people there, able to assist if something went wrong.
So she trailed along after him, silent as she took in the dull energy waves of some of the plant life around them. Alive, yes. But only green energies flickered about in empty space or illuminated forms. No yellow. "I don't see any traces of animal life around here, except the Mauvians. No yellow waves or figures anywhere," she said softly to him at one point, rubbing at her upper arms to ward away the chill. Less from the air, more from just how... empty everything was.
The orchard and fields piqued her interest, and her head tilted slightly as she observed them. "Hm. Well, one good thing--there's a lot of green energy. So the plants are alive. Assuming they bore any fruits, we might be set for a while?"

Her vision was a bit of a mystery to him despite the fact she made no secret of how it 'worked'. She saw in colours from what he'd gathered, or waves, or...well she saw something either way. He couldn't fathom how it might look and trying to picture it often made him question just how imaginative and creative he could be. In short; it was safe to assume that Athalia was more comfortable accepting her observations than trying to put himself in her shoes.
"Given I'm looking right at an orchard I would surmise that we're in for some luck," he confirmed. He wasn't necessarily happy about the lack of life here, but he knew that they could survive on fruit and vegetables if they had to. Whether they would all be bored sick of it by the end still remained to be seen, but he knew his patience would wear thin after a while if he had to eat them day in and day out without any real form of variety.
He'd tried the rice and meat diets before.
He wouldn't have recommended them.
"Either that or we're going to be eating potatoes for eternity," he muttered. He wasn't ungrateful for the potential creativity those around him might have had when it came to the staples, but this senshi was only capable of making something moderately useful whenever he had more than just salt at his disposal. Now if they could find themselves some curry then maybe he could have a little fun, but for now, he was beginning to suspect he'd end up with a lot of potato and leek soup in his life.
"And questionable meat," he added as an after thought. Nevertheless, he had to concede that if it look alright, smelled alright and was adequately cooked then he would give it a go. Protein was something that was particularly important to a diet and if it was edible then it wouldn't be smart to ignore it in the long term.
"I'll take my chances with the fruit first though," he admitted and glanced over his shoulder. "Although we'll need to check further," he continued and motioned to the forest. "Maybe nature is shy and prefers more sheltered haunts," he murmured.
...Although, it was rather strange that there were no rats, there were almost always rats where food was to be found.

Her pace picked up a little, curious to find if they were in fact lucky enough to find actual fruit. Fruit could add some sweetness to a meal, or just be a nice, refreshing thing to nibble. "I've a feeling Orias can make up some alcohol if there's any pears or apples," she mused aloud, chuckling softly. Not that she entirely trusted any alcohol content he might make... could still be safer than some water.
Athalia's summary though of their meal choices made her sigh, nodding in agreement. "Apple stews aren't bad with potato, and I think you can use applesauce in some recipes, though we don't have all the spices used for that... we might be able to make an approximate." She was trying to provide options, give some sort of upbeat news to the... rather grim reality of their situation. A good, warm meal could help to lift spirits in a lot of cases, after all, if they could cobble stuff together.
As he mentioned nature being shy her brow furrowed. "But we've found food supplies and no rats around," she pointed out, unaware he'd been on a similar train of thought. "It could be that larger game is out in the forest, sure, but I'm not exactly keen on how... empty things seem here." She'd expected rats to have nests down in the root cellar, and making meals out of the various supplies there. Sure, there hadn't been grain, and things had been largely preserved, but still. It just seemed... weird.
Drawing closer to the first of the orchard trees, she stared up at the branches, unable to see if there were any edible contents up there. "Any fruit?" She tipped her head towards him. As it was, she could at least make out she was a bit too short to be trying to reach up there. Unless she climbed up... Metis hummed slightly, eyeing the trunk of the nearest tree, and gaging how far up its lowest branch was, and if it was thick enough to support her weight if she did go up... "I haven't tried climbing a tree in years," she murmured, though more to herself in that moment.

"And thus my life was to descend into that of a being who spends the majority of their life eating dessert," he wrinkled his nose. To be fair, Apple Stew probably wasn't as sweet as he imagined, but mixing potatoes and apples just seemed wrong. Nevertheless if survival was dependent on it then he would eat whatever he was given whether overwhelmed by sweet foods or otherwise - perhaps he would be in luck and there would be ways and means to make it slightly less sweet than he currently imagined.
"However I would rather you didn't climb anything," he added. He was tall enough to reach the lower branches, and if he jumped he could grab on to a few of the others, but when it came to the rest...
He paused.
"If you can afford to surrender some of your dignity you can sit on my shoulders and grab anything further up?" he suggested. Otherwise he would do the climbing and she could feel out whatever apples would be most appropriate for consumption.
"And generally speaking when it's this quiet in a forest or anywhere near a forest it means something is wrong," he sighed softly. "So you have every right to express your concern. It would be wise to keep your guard up," he murmured and glanced briefly at the forest once more. "Though it would be remiss of me not to at least explore the possibility that something useful might well be in there for us to make sue of," he added.
"Would have been more helpful if we knew where everyone had gone, a few warnings at the very least," he muttered. "That might at least give us a clue as to what is or isn't lurking in the depths..."
