The Negaverse castle definitely had an aesthetic. It was big. It was bold. It was dark and elegant, with the crystals and everything, and with all of the spires and spikes on top, it was kind of intimidating, too. Sylvite liked it, overall. It was pretty, and it had a distinct look that was exactly what the castle of a magical army was supposed to look like.

The thing was, it didn't match Sylvite's personal style at all.

When she'd been given her tiny captain's office back when she'd first been promoted, it'd had the same dark crystal walls and simple furniture as all the others. She'd had to use just about every Pinterest trick in the book to make it cute.

There were fairy lights behind gossamer. There was a gallery wall that was all just wrapping paper in cheap frames. There were polaroids of Alexa and her friends on a string, and there was of course several years worth of a cute stationary collection on the desk. There were even a few little plushies. The most recent addition to the room had been a little bit more expensive, but it was also the best one. Sylvite had found out that stick on wallpaper worked with the crystals, so now her office was a much more satisfying shade of palest pink.

There was still a lot of paperwork to do, following the ambush. Sylvite wanted to make sure everybody who had been their got credit for what they had done, so she was putting the time in to make sure she was writing as good of reports for everyone as she could, and also keeping up with Cybele's progress.

The door to her office was open, and Sylvite was scribbling away inside.

Rakovanite didn't usually linger around Negaspace if he didn't have to. It had always been inconvenient to get to and from the Dark Kingdom, and he found that there weren't many resources available there that he couldn't access at home on his tablet. If he wasn't specifically accessing the Database to submit a report or search for information, there was almost no reason to spend time in Negaspace.

It was, admittedly, slightly less inconvenient to make the trip now. No more waiting on someone to pick him up or take him home. No more needing to physically run to get to (or away from) somewhere. His teleportation needed practice to be as useful and energy-conservative as possible, and there were few better places to practice teleporting to than Negaspace.

There was virtually no risk in being seen by someone he shouldn't, and being in Negaspace restored depleted energy more efficiently. He had a reason to be here now.

And he still had his own reports to file concerning newly corrupted senshi.

Something felt uncannily uncomfortable about writing a report about his own brother. Ellian was his blood. It felt bizarrely as if he was divulging private information about himself when he surrendered details about Diesel's magic and how his personality made him unlikely to progress very far in Negaverse ranks. He was still just a child, and one that Rakovanite had been tasked with guiding. The circumstances weren't ideal.

He was grimacing at his tablet screen as he strode down the castle's corridors toward the community computer lab. It seemed unnecessary to claim an office, since he didn't want to be spending copious amounts of time here.

Rakovanite preferred the field.

But as he walked by, a flash of pink and glitter in the corner of his eye made him look up and into one of the most girly decorated offices he'd ever seen. He struggled to think of a reasonable person who would consider this worth the time and effort, but then his dark gaze landed on the woman behind the desk, and 'reasonable' suddenly seemed like it was asking a lot.

His brow pinched. "Captain Sylvite," he greeted as he stood in the doorway, staring a little too hard at her to be polite. "You look... busy."

The sound of footsteps in the hall and someone calling her name was more than enough to get Sylvite to turn towards the door. She waved when she saw who it was, already smiling a little bit. “Van!”

Something was different, though. Sylvite’s mouth pressed to one side as she looked him up and down, and she squinted so hard that her nose wrinkled. Was it his outfit? Yeah. She was pretty sure that was a new sash, and there was something about his aura, too. She lit up all at once when she figured it out, her eyes going wide and her hands pressing together at her chest. “I mean, Captain Rakovanite! Woah. Look at you!”

He must have found some of that motivation after all, and Sylvite couldn’t have been prouder. She realized that was a little weird, since she was pretty sure he was older than her, but still.

“I guess I can’t tell you what to do anymore, huh?” she asked, not seeming upset about it at all. She didn’t think she could have made him do anything before, anyway.

She glanced back down at the papers she’d been scribbling away at, then shoved them off to the corner of the desk, all in a heap. Her fancy Japanese highlighter got a little bit more care. She was at least pretty gentle when she put the cap back on that one, but it got put away too. “Yeah, I was doing some reports, but I’m never too busy to say hi,” she said, looking back up with a grin. “What’s up?”

Van.

Sylvite was the only one who called him that, just as she was the only one who'd spent more than half a second thinking of a 'friendly' nickname to use with him. It was more casual than he preferred from most people, particularly his workplace proximity associates within the Negaverse. Rakovanite didn't hate it from her, but it was still a bit of an adjustment to get used to hearing. His gaze fell, breaking his stare as he murmured out a quiet, "Livi," in return.

With a glance down to the tablet screen still open in his hand, and then back to Sylvite beaming at him, Rakovanite decided it wouldn't kill him to pause from his own reports. Just for a moment. He stepped into her office and slipped to the side, so as to be standing out of view of anyone walking by her open door.

"It was right after your ambush," Rakovanite explained as he brushed a hand down the front of his vest. "Or because of it, I thought," he admitted softly with a tiny shrug. "Your operation was the first time I had been part of any raid sanctioned by a superior, so I suppose I had assumed you specifically had liked seeing me there." Sylivite was the closest thing he had to an officer directly above him, and she'd been the only one at the ambush he'd recognized, so in his mind, she was the only one who could even acknowledge that he'd participated. He'd imagined she'd told someone.

But maybe that was presumptuous of him, to think anyone cared to think or mention anything about him when he wasn't around.

"You still could," he replied. "I value your experience. ...But I may not listen, anyway."

He tried not to look too dissatisfied with her treatment of the papers she unceremoniously shoved to the side, but the corner of his lip twitched down tellingly. Rakovanite had to very deliberately think about pulling his attention away from the pile and back to Sylivite. "I was walking to the lab to submit my own reports on a new corrupt when I saw you. Not as high profile as yours, I think." He hadn't heard much about it since then, and the process of stealing a member of the White Moon was a bit foreign to him. He had to ask. "How did it go? After you left the field?"

Sylvite did a little wiggle in her chair when she heard the nickname, her mouth somehow opening even farther.

He'd remembered.

She had lots of friends in the Negaverse, and the ones she was close enough to like, go out for frozen yogurt with, she almost always called by nicknames. It was Still and Chrys, not Stillwaterite or Chrysocolla. Nobody had ever bothered to call her anything cute back, not until now.

Maybe there was more to Mister Stoic Soldier Boy after all.

Although, he was a pretty good soldier. "Yeah," said Sylvite with a bouncy little nod. "I'm not super surprised. You totally deserve it. I mentioned you in reports a couple times. I said you were smart and, uh," she grabbed a pink folder from the other side of her desk and flipped thorough it for a second before squinting at one of the papers inside. "Level headed." She snapped the folder closed and flicked it back across the table to where it had been, any lip-twitching or stares from Rakovanite going completely undetected, "But it's kinda up to the sovereigns what they wanna do with that information. I'm glad it all worked out."

Some of the initial excitement seemed to have worked its way out of her system. Sylvite glanced back over to the first stack of papers, and her voice was almost even when she said, "Cybele's okay. The recruitment went through and everything. It worked pretty much the same as ours." She put a hand in front of her own chest and wiggled her fingers to demonstrate. "I've been trying to help her settle in. I can introduce you guys if you want! I bet you'd get along."

They both liked staring at things and had that super serious vibe. Together they could probably intimidate even the most stubborn of Order's forces.

Sylvite leaned forward, steepling her fingers. "But you can't just tell me there's a new senshi and nothing else!" She tilted her head. "Who? What? Where? Are they nice?"

Rakovanite eyed the girl seated at the desk in front of him. He’d been inclined to assume that it was unlikely anyone would realize he existed. Even General Cavansite, who’d corrupted him, hadn’t kept any kind of contact with him over the past year. Rakovanite hadn’t gone out of his way to keep up with any of the other agents he’d met, so it just seemed safest to assume that probably no one really thought much of anything about him besides that he was another body for the Negaverse. It had been impressed upon him early that people were “watching,” but he’d expected he was nondescript enough to merit little notice.

So long as he was meeting his quota and not causing a scene, no one needed to bother to know him.

But Sylvite had, at least to the extent where he was worth mentioning in her reports. With an ‘s.’ More than one. He was unsure if he was surprised she’d thought of him, or if it should be expected. It was her branch’s job to know, whether anyone else realized they were having tabs kept on them or not.

“Thank you,” Rakovanite murmured softly, deciding he preferred to think she simply really did think he was “smart,” and there was nothing more sinister than that in any reports.

Like “belligerent.”

Or “not suited to assignments requiring moral finesse.”

He cleared his throat. “I am not opposed to meeting her,” he admitted. “I suppose I just am not sure I understand what keeps their kind from…” He paused to think of the word, before settling on, “Relapsing. How much does she understand? Anything? Nothing? It is very confusing to me to think about how someone could exist in a state of knowing nothing about themselves or what they believe in. I am uncertain if I would say the right things to help her acclimate better, instead of wondering more…”

He had chosen this. It made sense for him to want this power. What made people who’d been corrupted in the manner Cybele had continue on in this faction? What propelled them, fueled them? Rakovanite wasn’t sure he understood.

But that didn’t mean he didn’t support it.

“You must be looking toward your own advancement soon. It seems likely after you captured a high-value target. She is lucky to have you to guide her.”

He probably should’ve known better than to mention his own new senshi to Sylvite. Of course she would want to meet any new recruits, friendly thing that she was… Rakovanite just wasn’t sure he was really up for sharing. Certainly he wasn’t up for anyone being excited about anything involving his brother.

No matter how they might get along.

He shrugged. “I have little information about him, but I decided to call him Cervantite.”

"I mean, she's still a person," said Sylvite with a bouncy little shrug. "You don't have to say anything weird. 'Hi' is always a good place to start."

She thought back to the way Cybele acted whenever she came to the office to go over notes or information. She had a tendency to hang out in the doorway, or just inside of it, the way Rakovanite was doing now. Now that she was thinking about it, they both kinda looked at her the same way, too, like they were watching her carefully, even if they were just hanging out.

"She's all serious, like you. Really into work. You guys could always talk about that. She's been bringing in tons of energy ever since she started going out on her own."

Yeah, she was sure of it. They had so much in common that they could be great friends and an even better team.

She snapped the folder shut and started pawing through her other papers instead. These were the ones she'd shoved aside earlier, but Sylvite was nothing without her organized chaos, and within a couple seconds she had the handbook page on recruiting members of Order picked out. This one she laid flat on the desk and spun it around so that the other captain could see.

"I was kinda curious about how it worked, too," she said. "The Chaos did a lot of the work. She doesn't remember much at all from before, but she knows we're her friends." Sylvite's smile brightened at that. The pride was practically radiating off of her. "Obviously she had questions at first, but I pretty much just told her the truth. We're giving her a second chance."

It was a little more complicated than that. Sylvite was careful not to say anything too weird or shocking, but if someone was on their side now, there wasn't much to hide.

The advancement comment got her blinking a couple of times, way too fast, but she didn't say anything because she was trying really, really hard not to hope too much. She did nod when he mentioned his senshi.

"Cervantite's a nice name," she said. "I'd love to meet him sometime!" She grinned, then topped and squinted instead. "I mean, unless he's like, super mean."

Although, it would still be good to have information on someone, even if they weren't nice.

Rakovanite's expression took on the most vaguest traces of confusion: head canted just barely, gaze very slightly lidded. Because yes, that was exactly the problem, couldn't Sylvite tell? Cybele was a person, and Rakovanite did not find people the most likeable or interesting- And they usually felt similarly toward him. Even if he didn't call most of his interactions with others 'awkward,' he did call them uncomfortable and strenuous. It was taxing to try and successfully communicate with people.

It seemed like it would very likely be worse with someone who had very little memory of anything about herself. The only thing they could possibly have in common worth talking about was Negaverse work, and considering Cybele's history of opposing them... "Seems... unnecessary," Rakovanite grumbled softly. "It is probably best to leave welcoming her to you."

As the girl slid an opened folder across her desk toward him, Rakovanite stepped nearer to peer at it.

He understood the basic gist of corrupting the other side. The actual process was not so different than when a basic civilian had been corrupted, as Sylvite had pointed out. But unlike an unwilling Order member, he still knew who he was. Rakovanite knew why he'd wanted this and what made him still want it. The same couldn't exactly be said for anyone forced over from the other side.

"Do you think that is wise?" He asked quietly, dark gaze lifting from the papers to find Sylvite's face again. "The truth would involve telling her in some part what she once was. I can only speak for myself and how I think I would respond to such information, but I feel confident it would be unfavorably. I can think of very few people who would welcome being forced to join the 'enemy,' especially if most facets of my life had been shredded away from me because of it."

He slid the folder back to her and took a brisk step away, folding his arms behind his back as he did. "I am sure you have her reigned in, but I think I would find it difficult to trust her." And certainly to be comfortable around her.

With a roll of his shoulders, he hummed out a thoughtful, "Perhaps we could trade senshi for a day sometime. I could help you acclimate Cybele if you wanted to show Cervantite around. He is particularly unmanageable." It was as close to a joke as he could come.

While Rakovanite just squinted a little at her claims, Sylvite's look of confusion at his response was not at all subtle. Her lips were twisted, her nose was all scrunched up, and she even tilted her head before she shook it.

"Of course it's smart to tell someone the truth," she said. "Like, I get that stuff's more complex here than the whole kindergarten 'don't lie' rule, and there's definitely stuff we haven't talked about yet."

Like, the fact that when they'd met, Cybele had shot her in the back with every intention of killing her, or that after her capture, she'd kicked and spit at Sylvite every time she'd woken up from the energy draining. Sometimes during their sessions, Sylvite wondered if she was ever going to ask about the moments right before her coming over, and also what she was going to say if she did, but so far it hadn't come up.

"But we gotta build trust now that she's one of us," said Sylvite, leaning forwards over the mess of papers and resting her chin on her hands. "I wasn't gonna come up with some dumb answer when she asked why she was recruited as an Eternal."

She sucked her cheeks in for a few seconds and actually seemed to consider. "Maybe you could blank-slate it with someone freshly awakened, but Cybele's got a history. If I didn't tell her, she'd find out from the database, or like, someone she used to know who thinks it's so awful that we stole her."

Sylvite rolled her eyes, clearly not impressed by any hypothetical members of Order.

Her smile came back when he talked about trading senshi, only for her to raise an eyebrow half a second later. "Wait, you recruited someone unmanageable?" Her grin only got bigger at the thought. "Okay, now I'm really curious about all this."

"I suppose," Rakovanite murmured in quiet acquiescence to Sylvite's claims, though it was probably obvious by his tone alone that he still wasn't convinced. He agreed that it would likely be apparent what had happened to anyone who had enough time to learn about the repercussions of being force-corrupted. Cybele (or any other) would eventually realize that their lack of memory was probably due to being on the other side, and perhaps they would be offended that the truth had been kept from them.

But even that acknowledged there was something between the corruption and the realization: time. Time for the chaos to settle on their starseed, time for the worst of the confusion and loss to abate, time to acclimate and accept.

Rakovanite didn't know enough about Cybele or the general human condition to even closely estimate what it would feel like to wake as a powerful adult eternal and have virtually nothing, but he imagined that if it were him, he wouldn't be satisfied to be in any such state, no matter how cute and bubbly his new friends were. Getting as close to how things used to be, his routine, would be important to him. It was important to him now, and if it was just gone-

Not that that was even a remotely relevant thought.

"I agree it would likely be difficult to control when that information came out, if not up front," he relented with a shrug. Sylvite at least seemed pleased and confident with the decision, and she didn't mention anything about Cybele being more difficult because of it. It was probably fine.

Rakovanite cleared his throat. "I find most people unmanageable," he admitted. "But this one is particularly... loud and brash. If there had been any other option, I may have taken it, but it seemed unwise to leave an unawakened senshi where anyone could find him. He had an Order guardian with him, already." His brows pursed in reignited confusion. "I have no idea, no understanding of what it was doing with him if not to awaken him."

Sylvite tilted her head, her grin only going a little bit smug when Rakovanite finally seemed to be admitting that she'd made the right call with Cybele. Like, he was still being a little bit critical, but Sylvite was willing to take what she could get. She was starting to realize that this was kinda par for the course with him. He was always gonna ask questions. He was always gonna try to find the best solutions to things.

Sylvite understood. She got like that, too, sometimes. She just knew that she was right about this one.

Although the details of Cybele's conversion and training were momentarily forgotten as he started talking a little more about this senshi that he had found.

"Wait, there was an Order cat there?" Sylvite asked, leaning forwards even more as her eyes went wide. "Okay, yeah. That changes everything. I mean, it's good to get as many senshi as we can, anyway, but like, if he was about to get awakened?" Her face was practically glowing. "You totally sniped him! Take that, Order! No wonder you got a promotion!" She sat up straight again and gave a little golf clap.

"Sorry you don't get along, though," she said, going a little bit quieter. It wasn't totally lost on her that she was loud, and kind of impulsive, and that he was here, talking to her in her office, anyway, so that maybe there was more to the story, but she decided not to mention that.

"You can always get him another officer if it's really bad," she said, her tone getting somewhere close to steady and serious. "Or you can at least ask for help." Her smiled widened again. "Like, I can do training, and I'm not scared of loud people."

"I am not so sure," Rakovanite replied lowly. "There was a Guardian there, but the impression I got tended more toward... permanent companionship? They were living together. I have no proof, besides just the cat's presence, that it intended to awaken him. Cervantite- the senshi- seemed to have no idea what was going on. He thought he had a normal pet cat, so I am not sure if anything was changed... We did get the Guardian too, though, for whatever that is worth."

Of course everything sounded very promising in theory. Even a lazy Guardian and unintelligent senshi were better on chaos' side than not- But were they really? Useless things that took up resources and offered nothing in return didn't seem beneficial to Rakovanite.

He puffed out a quiet, tired sigh, and the rigidity in his shoulders eased almost imperceptibly as he muttered out a, "We will see."

"I hope that I am not so inept that I am unable to manage one belligerent boy, but..." Well, he knew where the worst of his own weaknesses lay, anyway. He'd never been proficient in dealing with people in any regard, but teenagers were certainly the most unmanageable. The brashest, the most reckless and carefree. He eyed Sylvite thoughtfully, quietly mulling the thought of where she fit into that.

But ultimately, he would always be able to handle someone with the dedication, purpose, and thought Sylvite had, even if she was a little too exuberant for his tastes. This other senshi did not have those qualities.

He inclined his head very slightly to her. "I would be grateful for whatever assistance you could offer. I know that it is... not innately in my skillset to train other people."

"Wait, you got a senshi and a cat?"

Rakovanite didn't seem all that impressed, but Sylvite was still a little bit slack jawed. Like, yeah, she got the concept of not wanting to recruit every single person on the street, but this was a case where they'd gotten two allies instead of two enemies.

"That means you're doing better than me. Wow. No wonder you got a promotion," she said, grinning as she nodded at the new pieces on his uniform again. She hadn't done anything nearly that impressive back when she'd first made Captain, just an internal investigation that had come up inconclusive and a couple of database entries.

Something about the cold way he said belligerent made her smile flicker, though. She glanced down at an empty spot on her desk and was actually quiet for a couple seconds.

"Look," she said. "It's not about being inept. It's not even about skillsets, really. You're obviously doing something right. I'm sure you've got plenty to teach people that I wouldn't even think about. You can do it." She looked up at him again, although her smile was smaller.

"There's a frustration tolerance, though. If you get too worked up, or tired or whatever, you become less effective, especially at leadership. It's a whole thing. I, uh, saw it with the guy who recruited me."

It hadn't been firsthand. She'd been too hyper and unfocused for him to even try with, but she knew some of the people he'd actually trained, and they'd all turned out weird.

"So if you get to that point, the smart thing to do is to ask for help," she said with a deep nod, not wanting to dwell on all that too much.

Rakovanite wouldn't admit that it was personal. The only reason Cervantite and Brioche had been corrupted was because the senshi was Rakovanite's brother, and he hadn't been able to come up with a better solution in the limited window in which he'd been given to act. He didn't think Ellian was well-suited to the Negaverse's goals, so it was ultimately a wasted corruption, giving someone a power they would flounce around with and have absolutely no regard for, but...

No matter his grievances with his baby brother, Rakovanite still wasn't sure how successful he would have been with eliminating the enemy if Cervantite had been awakened to Order. He wasn't sure, and that bothered him, and he definitely didn't want to share those concerns with Sylvite.

And it probably wasn't important to mention that the promotion had come before the senshi and the cat, so he actually had no idea what had prompted it. Lots of things he didn't feel like sharing.

"I would never say that," he admitted in a quiet murmur. She still had years more experience than he did, and she was at least dutiful in sticking to her goals and what they meant to their organization. ...Rakovanite had no idea what his goals were. He just knew he wasn't suited to being anywhere else.

Though he didn't miss the little falter in her usually cheery demeanor. It was apparent enough for him to notice, though not so pronounced that he could decipher the why of it. He didn't know what made her pause, but given the way she looked away from him and her smile seemed less dazzling, it certainly seemed like it wasn't good. Something he had done that seemed 'not right' by her.

Rakovanite glanced away as well.

"I think there are other things I am better suited for," he said at length. He had always been solitary and particularly unenthused about working with others. He probably just wasn't meant to be in a leadership position. "But I will try to keep your advice in mind, moving forward..."

"Who was it?" He prompted after a moment. Certainly no one Rakovanite would have known, but the general who had corrupted him had been as equally non-present as any other. Even the captain who had been supposed to guide him had only lingered for a matter of weeks before completely disappearing. Perhaps it was just a commonality among them all. None of them were suited to leadership, despite some having bene promoted to such a position.

While there might be more to the story of this "belligerent" senshi and his pet Mauvian, Sylvite didn't push any farther for answers, yet. There was plenty of time to figure it all out, especially once she got to talk to the boy in question.

Her fingers were getting twitchy, and she reached for a rogue sticky note, folding it in half and then in half again. "Umber," she said as she made another little crease. Her nose wrinkled, a little bit from focus on her project and a little bit from the memories. Sylvite wasn't usually the type to keep things to herself, but she stayed quiet for a second since he was dead and all and she didn't have anything nice to say.

Then again, he'd made his choices. He didn't exactly deserve to have people saying nice stuff in his memory.

"I didn't get the worst of it, but he beat people up. Agents. Broke their bones and everything, like, a lot." Once the words started, they came faster and faster. "The girl who actually did my training? He brought her over from the White Moon, and then he was mean to her! After all that. She was really smart, too, and good at this stuff. She didn't deserve that." She blew out a breath so sharp that some of her papers rustled.

"I guess it doesn't matter, though," she said, pressing down a crease hard with her thumb. "He's been gone a long time."

Another second passed, and Sylvite took a softer breath before looking back to Rakovanite. "I dunno if I'm good at leadership or whatever, either, but I want to think that I can do better than that."
