Sterling had been a bit scarce of late, though Priam knew this not to be a personal slight; they still talked on the phone or through text messages often enough, so Priam was well aware of the test the younger man was studying for. He was glad to see Sterling taking his studies so seriously, but he knew how easily it was to forget basic care.

They had cancelled their night of patrolling, so Priam had instead spent it making a care package. He'd collected all sorts of things into a moderately sized wicker basket--tea, healthy snacks, little candies, some fresh baked treats, a few relaxing candles, an unnecessary amount of gourmet baking supplies, and some toys and treats for Oreo. It was clear that he'd worked hard on the display; a little card was tucked in amidst the gifts.

He parked his car and shuffled to the front door; he knew Sterling's address from dropping him off, and he carefully made his way while holding both the basket and a little aluminum wrapped pie dish. He hadn't yet visited but he just wanted to drop off the presents and let Sterling focus on studying.

Wearing a nice button down and slacks, and a slightly too-large sweater that was just so comfortable, he balanced everything carefully and knocked on the door.

The sound of the car door had been the first clue someone was outside, the muffled thud catching his attention from deeper within the house.

The knock at the door confirmed it wasn’t just someone checking a map, maybe someone evangelizing door to door, that would be amusing.

He wandered to the door, curious but also cautious, the garden sheers he’d been planning to use in the back yard tucked into his back pocket.

He peered through one of the sitting room windows trying to view what he was about to get into before he answered, but didn’t recognize who was at the door, so he walked the few extra feet and swung the door open, blinking expectantly at the new arrival.

Gift basket, that was new. He dressed like someone who knew Sterling, that didn’t mean a -lot- though. Yu was, to say the least, dressed down by comparison. A faded out, once black t-shirt over well-abused jeans long since tuned charcoal and ash from use, the hems just long enough to drag and, in turn, well frayed since he seldom bothered to turn them up.

Priam blinked when the door was answered, and for a split second he had the most basic fear that he had arrived at the wrong house--until he recalled, yes, this was absolutely Sterling's house, he'd dropped him off several times.

"Oh," he said, after a second of feeling rather stupid. He moved the things in his arms as if he intended to try and shake his hand, but when he realized the risk of dropping something was too great, he instead just flashed a smile.

"I'm so sorry to drop by like this. I'm Priam. You must be Yu...?" he offered hopefully, but didn't want to linger on the doorstop without clarifying his intention. "Sterling mentioned he's been studying for his big test on Thursday. I just wanted to stop by and drop off a care package. Is he in?"

“Ah… Yeah, I’m Yu.” He nodded and recognized the name.
He glanced at the care package and then stepped aside.

“He’s not at the moment, but if you want to come in, I was just preparing to do some stuff, I can make like…tea or something.” He offered. “Or We have lunch things.”

That was a regular offer, right?

Then again, taking the basket was probably normal too, but he didn’t love the idea of having his hands full.

“Sorry, here I can…” He let the thought trail off and just extended his hands to help take the basket. “If you want.”

Though Priam was briefly disappointed that Sterling wasn't there, it didn't seem to deter his mood for very long and he nodded. "I'd love to come in for a moment, if it's not intruding."

He knew it was intruding, but he hoped it wouldn't be too obnoxious.

"I don't mind carrying any of it," he insisted, but hesitated, because Sterling had told him to stop refusing any offer of help. "...Actually," he corrected slowly, balancing both the basket and the pie tray, "If you could help me with this?" he felt the need to explain. "It's just a caramel custard pie. It's nothing fancy--I was going to make him a casserole, but he mentioned that you do the cooking and I didn't want to intrude. I'm not a magnificent chef--or baker--by any means, but this was always a bit of a pick me up whenever I was studying. If he doesn't like it, it's all right," he insisted. "It's nice to meet you, though. He speaks of you often."

The mention of the pie had a light flash in Yu’s eyes, a new interest and he took it gratefully.

“That sounds delicious! He’s the only one who can do a decent desert in this house honestly. I’m a walking disaster when it comes to baked goods.”

He led the way into the kitchen and found space for the pie to chill, and a spot to set the gift basket too.

“Have a seat, unless you want to help me prep for dinner. I don’t mind if you prefer to just watch too I just ... don’t sit still super well.”

He folded his arms as he invited him to share space preparing dishes, not quite meeting Priam’s gaze for that moment.

“If you like to cook, that’s what I do for work, just help in a kitchen I mean, but we could, like, talk cooking.” He offered trying to find common civil ground

It seemed like Priam immediately relaxed once invited in, and he wore a soft smile as he looked around. Sterling spoke so highly of his home, of his projects, of Yu.

Once the basket and the pie had found a place out of his arms, he ran his fingers lightly up and down his sleeves to soothe his limbs.

"I don't want to get in your way, but if there's anything I could do to help, please. I can wash my hands and do anything you need. Or just stay over here! Sterling mentioned you were a natural in the kitchen, but I know what it's like trying to cook with someone who doesn't know what they're doing just winds up standing in the way. Even if they mean well. What are you planning on making for dinner?" he asked with great interest. "I don't have the stamina to cook professionally--and you're going to school too, aren't you? How do you make time for everything?"

“I ah... I’m just part time.” He admitted. “I work to cover bills and school as I can, so it’s a class here and there. I can’t afford it otherwise.” He shrugged, brushing it off as best he could. “I’d do culinary school instead but that means baking, so I learn more in the kitchen watching and stuff.”

He discretely put the hedge clippers into a drawer before opening the fridge.

“I’m probably not doing anything crazy tonight, I thought maybe chicken scallopini, I’m gonna use a canned sauce though.” He shrugged “I could give you an onion to chop, and adding another chicken breast won’t hurt, serving three instead of two if you think you might want to wait to see Sterling after he’s free.”

Priam blinked once before it registered that it seemed he was being invited to dinner. "I can do that," he said easily; he didn't want to presume anything but he figured anyone dealing with food should practice good hygiene so he rolled up his sleeves and washed his hands in the sink. "I don't want to distract him or take away from your time with him, but it is nice to finally meet you."

He was diligent in his cleanliness, but that came with working in a hospital.

"Sterling gets stars in his eyes when he talks about you. It's very nice to have a face to put to the name. How is Oreo doing, is she settling in? I'm glad I didn't bring the dogs, I almost brought them for a car ride but they finally tuckered themselves out and I thought I might let them rest."

Yu Slid back a few steps to rest his back against some of the taller cupboards, greater access to the sink granted, watchful, and hands resting lightly against the wood behind him.

“Yeah? I… he’s pretty awesome himself. I don’t know what I would have done had we not worked out as housemates and things. Ah…Oreo is doing well; she’s quite fond of trodding on my face at like, three in the morning.”

The mention of the dogs made him glance at his feet and back with a small hmm. “What kind of dogs did you get? Are they good with people? I mean, they must be…”

Priam half turned so he could see him as he listened; he hadn't missed the way Yu's gaze dropped when he'd mentioned the dogs. "They're mutts," he explained. "Right now, they're still pretty small. They're very friendly, they want to make friends with everyone. They really liked Oreo when we were on our way from the shelter, so I am hoping that they can see each other again. I want to make sure they stay good natured around cats. They're still young, but I've started training them. I think they want to behave. One is pathetic, pitiful, The other is her protector, but he's more curious, and bigger."

He was drying his hands off when he asked, "Do you dislike dogs or are you missing one?"

His expression was full-on startled for a split second before he put on a cocky casual expression and offered a shrug.
“I stayed with someone once; he had hunting dogs. I hated the damn things. They were mean as anything and louder than they were mean.” he shook his head like it wasn’t really anything.

“Mutts are normally better anyhow, under-rated as long as you treat them right and all.” He shrugged.
“I'm trying not to judge all dogs on those hunting dogs, you know?” He turned and swung open a lower cabinet, pulling an onion out of a safe, dark corner and tossing it casually towards Priam.

“So, have you cooked this before? We won't go all out; we can probably make pasta. It’s supposed to be thin spaghetti in the recipe I found, but it doesn't hurt to make things fresh when you can.

The shift in expression might have made Priam suspicious--if he hadn't been looking for it. He wore a small smile still and nodded as he caught the onion. "No, I've never made this recipe. I'm excited," he confessed. "I'll trust your direction on it."

He rolled the onion around in his hands for a few seconds before he said, "I don't like aggressive dogs, myself. My brother was bitten by a hunting dog. I admit! I like having them around for defense. Just in case," he said, but continued a little too quickly, "But I like the company. I need something I won't be afraid of. They're very small and friendly now, if you'd ever like to meet them? I'd love to have you and Sterling over. He mentioned a movie night, if you'd be interested?"

Yu made a non-committal sound and offered an equally ambiguous shrug. Just a touch of interest, but nothing so much as to say that yes. Yes, he would participate in meeting the dogs.

“Could be fun; it depends on my schedule is all. I like movies, though.”

He started fishing out a small container of mushrooms, some garlic, a lemon… cream, and an assortment of other ingredients that he carefully laid out in various places in the kitchen.

“When you’re done with the onion, I can have you juice the lemon. In the meantime, there is some white wine in the cupboard over the fridge. Do you think you could get that down?”

Priam nodded; he wasn't incredibly tall but he reached as best he could and seemed pleased when he located it, promptly setting it down on the counter next to Yu before he began working on the onion. He was comfortable and, while he didn't profess to be any sort of chef, it seemed that he was quite comfortable at preparations.

"I can do all of that. Do let me know about the movies when you have some free time, though," he said. "Or, I mean, have Sterling let me know. We can figure something out. What type of movies do you like?" he asked, somewhat absentmindedly. It felt nice to be talking to him rather than just hear Sterling gush over everything.
