The starseed was tucked in the pocket of Myles' hoodie and his hands were shoved into it. He had stayed with Jeremy for as long as he could but it felt like they were being separated too quickly for comfort. Myles was afraid that if he disappeared from sight, he wouldn't see him again.
...They were at a hospital, he reasoned. Jeremy was okay. He had paperwork to fill out, and though he was antsy and knew he wasn't very reliable, he had done his best.
The world was spinning, too many things happening at once--and then, nothing.
The waiting room was oddly empty. Everything was so still. Myles was alone--except for Erica, who had been supportive since they'd first arrived. She had helped keep Myles focused, helped him get out the answers he needed to, helped keep him stable.
Jeremy had insisted he'd be fine with the doctor, and the doctors had insisted that they didn't have time to waste.
Myles had to let him go, and now he was staring at the last door he'd seen Jeremy go through, standing awkwardly as he rung his hands together around the starseed hidden in the front of his sweater.
He hadn't forgotten that Erica was there, he just couldn't seem to focus.
Myles just seemed lost.

"Your brother won't be happy if he hears you haven't been eating." Erica took a seat next to Myles. "Here, at least snack on something small." She handed him a bag of trail mix and a bottle of Gatorade from the vending machine. it wasn't the most healthy of options out there but it beat hospital food by a mile depending on location and day of the week. She knew better than to try and convince him to get out of the waiting room and stretch his legs for a bit. "Those worry lines will become wrinkles if you're not careful." Erica nudged him with her elbow to try and pull him out of his stupor.

Myles spun to face her, a little frantic, like a child caught with his hand in the cookie jar. "Oh," he said, like it was the only thing he could manage. He accepted the food and sank into the chair, stretching out his long legs. He held the snacks in one hand and snuck the starseed out of his pocket to make sure it was okay before returning it to its safe place.
He exhaled and finally glanced at her. "Thank you," he said softly. He didn't open the food, he just held it for a moment, chewing on his lower lip.
"...Thank you for helping me find him. I'm...sorry about..."
He was quiet and couldn't finish; exhaustion had hit him and he seemed to realize that now, alone, he might have to deal with the consequences of his actions.
"...About everything."

"You have nothing to be sorry about, Myles." She leaned back in her chair and seemed to just deflate a bit after having such a long and, well to be frank, unusual kind of day. "I'm just sorry that the other officers weren't taking your concern seriously. I would have expected more professionalism from them especially since Jeremy is one of our own." One of the hardest workers in their precinct, thinking back on it, she couldn't recall him ever taking a vacation since she was hired on. If he wasn't training new recruits then he was on patrol, and when he wasn't doing that there was the backlog of reports he was helping with. Married to his work, not that it was a bad thing. "I honestly wish someone would have called me," She could have sworn that Jeremy had given Myles her number but if not she would fix that later. Erica's eyes wondered around the empty room. "So," she glanced at him out of the corner of her eyes."Do you want to explain to me what happened back there? With the slab..."

His mouth ran dry; he had been fiddling with the cap on the bottle but he hadn't been able to muster the strength to open it yet.
The first time he tried to open his mouth to answer, he found that his voice caught in his throat and he couldn't make any noise. It took a few seconds before he could try again.
It didn't feel like his voice, didn't sound like it was leaving his throat, but he heard it.
"Please don't tell anyone. It's not my brother's fault. He didn't do anything wrong. He can't control this. I didn't choose this. I'm sorry. Please, please, please don't tell anyone--if they knew," he swallowed.
He knew what that meant. He knew what blackmail meant. What worse meant.
"--They already weren't looking for him. I don't know what they would do if they could use it against him. Please, my brother is a good person. Please. I'm sorry. I just wanted to save him. I just--I wasn't thinking about anything but him."
And yet, he had tears in his eyes; it wasn't the first time she'd seen him cry. Myles was always too open with his emotions, something that both exasperated and relieved Jeremy. He could read his brother better than anyone, but he always said it was because Myles was a little simple. He hadn't ever said it like it was a bad thing.
He was pleading to Erica. "I'll tell you what you want to know. Anything I can. But--please. If I have to go to jail--" his voice hitched, and the thought visibly terrified him. "Okay. I will. But please. I just need him to be okay."

"Myles," her brows furrowed in concern as she turned in the chair to face him fully. "You're not under interrogation." "I know you don't have much reason to trust me after all you went through. But I'd hope after all the years you've known me that you'd at least trust Jeremy's judgment in me." Erica was fairly certain that he wouldn't have gone on patrol with her as often as he had if he didn't believe she'd have his back. "I'm not looking to get you or your brother in trouble here. I just want to understand what's going on." "Jeremy didn't seem surprised by it so I assume he already knows."

He seemed so small, despite his long limbs. He was always lanky, always underweight, but now more than ever he looked young.
He looked guilty; he knew he was gullible and it was hard to determine if he was being tricked or not. He didn't want to agree to anything if he thought it might get Jeremy in trouble. Jeremy who worked so hard, Jeremy who deserved a promotion. Jeremy who would have done anything for him.
"I'm sorry," he said again, as if instinctive. It wasn't just a mantra he was repeating though, and he added, "I'm just scared. I'm glad he was okay. I just." He was trembling, either from chill or nerves or fatigue, it wasn't clear. His face was numb as he spoke and his expression was lost, not his usual smiling self. "It's not what it looks like. I know about the--the vigilantes. I know it looks bad. But I'm not bad. I swear. I don't go out and hurt people. It's bigger than that. There are good people and bad people, same as always, and some people go out and do good and some do bad and it's not like you can sit down and talk about it without someone thinking you're crazy. You're too smart for me to lie to. I just don't know what to say without you thinking I'm crazy."

"First off, I don't think you're crazy." "If anything I feel like I'm the one that's been going crazy. Monsters hiding in alleyways, people disappearing through mirrors. Not exactly things I can include in a report." Erica's expression seemed wary if not skeptical as if she half expected him to pull a Houdini on her. "I've run into guys wearing military uniforms with weapons you'd expect to see at a fantasy fair just disappear into thin air." That was a difficult incident to explain when she got to the precinct, why she had discharged her firearm; wasn't exactly something that they easily turn the other cheek too. "So what differentiates you from them?"

He almost seemed relieved, until he realized that he'd been foolish to think that the worst thing would be a civilian finding out who he was--if she had been a Dark Mirror Senshi? A Negaverse Agent? His blood ran cold and he visibly paled. Finally, he cracked open the drink and raised it to his lips. His hand still shook but he managed not to spill any.
"I don't hurt people," he answered. "...It's--it's hard, it's not like there's a straightforward answer. I'm not the smartest person but I'll do my best to explain it. It's just--it's like. Some people have these cosmic powers, and some people have these powers that stem from stray chaos in the universe? And so there are those with all that...chaos, that...they're the ones you have to worry about. The ones with the military weapons, they're the most dangerous ones. The ones that look like monsters are usually working with them. And usually if they are wearing dark colors, it's a good indication that they're the ones you have to watch out for. It's not black and white," he said again. "...But it's...a quick guide. I--I can answer more questions. But you...you can't tell people. You can't tell who is a good guy and a bad guy. They can change, just like I did. And there's no telling who any of them could be...and if you tell the wrong person, or start asking too many questions? You could get hurt too..."

It took many moments for Erica to process all that very pointed yet still ambiguous information. Dark outfits, military weapons, monsters; all indicators that the individual sides with this chaos but, as Myles clearly stated, it's not that black and white. Good could be bad and bad could be good because apparently they could switch sides. The whole concept of what he was trying to explain was confusing and had she not of dealt with individuals like that first hand, Erica would have been completely lost. "I think I'm kinda following." Felt like she was talking to a Cheshire or perhaps it was the Caterpillar from Alice in Wonderland; it had been so long since she last watched the movie that she couldn't recall which one spoke in circles and which one spoke in riddles, chances are it was both but that was besides the point. "Basically it comes down to a general rule of thumb; actions speak louder than words and non-military or non-dark colored outfits are ones that can usually be trusted but not always." Fantastic."How long has Jeremy known that you can..."She squinted one eye at him, not too sure what exactly it was he did. "change outfits so quickly?" Ok, so it was definitely more than a quick costume switch but there was definitely a strength there that Myles didn't have when he looked like the boy she had put into a bullet proof vest.

"I don't want to talk about that," he said quietly, eyes downcast. "It isn't Jeremy's fault that I'm like this. I didn't tell him in the beginning. I know I lied to him. I know it was bad. I just know he would have stopped me. I know what they say about the--you know." He whispered, "The terrorists," and then continued in a soft, but somewhat more audible voice, "And Jeremy hates them. He doesn't like that they don't play by the rules, that they take things into their own hands. He--he doesn't like people who don't follow the rules. And I get it." He was wringing his hand nervously. "...But it's not his fault I'm like this. None of it is. Someone--someone already found out about me, once."
He swallowed and his mouth suddenly felt full of cotton; he had to stumble to say, "I'd do anything to protect Jeremy. Please. Please don't use this against him. Me, I mean. This isn't his fault. I didn't ask for this, but I didn't turn it down. I just--they said there's more at stake and I just--I said I'd help. I just want to keep people safe. I just want to do good."

“I understand wanting to help keep people safe. But you don’t have to put your life on the line to do so. That’s our job.” No doubt Jeremy had said similar words to him but it might help Myles to realize that it wasn’t just his older brother trying to be overbearing or tell him what to do. “And as his partner, it is my job to keep him safe,” Erica added. “Believe me when I say I am truly sorry that I wasn’t here for him this time.” Had she not of been on vacation, this would have never happened. The first day he didn’t show up for work she would have gone looking, with or without her captain’s permission. Even now, she was still fuming inside that Myles’ concern wasn’t taken seriously and not enough was done to try and find Jeremy. “I know It’s not something you want to hear, but I do understand your brother’s point of view, and he’s not wrong in thinking that way.” He’d spoken about it several times when they were on patrol together, but as of late the complaints were fewer and Erica wondered if Myles was the reason why. “Whether it is terrorists of vigilantes, both function under their own set of rules and it’s often the city, and its citizens, that pay the ultimate price.” Buildings collapsing, not to mention the influx of patients sent to the hospital in the aftermath of a more catastrophic event. Thankfully this year seemed to have calmed down significantly but there were still a few months left for things to go back to how they were. “Trust must be earned, however, I hope that after almost three years you could believe me when I say that your secret is safe, Jeremy will be safe… I’ll talk to Drew to make sure he understands this as well.” She did worry that the hazing might get to him and something might slip by mistake. “We may not be family, but when I agreed to be Jeremy’s partner it wasn’t just to have his back or support him. If anything were to happen I would make sure you were taken care of.” “He may not say it out loud but I suspect you’re one of the main reasons he works so hard.” Erica placed a hand on Myles’ knee and gave it a squeeze.

Myles had heard this conversation before. 'It's our job'. 'You're just a civilian'. 'You're in danger and you put other people in danger'. Erica was nicer about it, but the words still stung. His eyes were downcast and his fingers were laced in his lap, barely even holding the food she'd offered him.
He nodded, because it was the polite thing to do, but he couldn't raise his gaze from the ground or muster up enough spirit to even reply. Myles didn't have a lot of self esteem, but he had a good attitude, for the most part. He could be flighty and airheaded, but his heart was in everything he did and he always tried to do the right thing.
He was already feeling guilty when she reached over to squeeze his knee, when she told him that Jeremy worked so hard for him.
He knew. He knew how much Jeremy had given up for him, how hard he worked. Everything he'd done for him. He seemed to shrink more, to just wither next to her. In the absence of words, he nodded, and managed a quiet, "I'm sorry," and even that seemed like it was hard for him.

Erica’s expression shifted to a soft smile. Even though Myles was a young adult, he still carried with him childlike tendencies. His innocence was evident and she believed that he was just trying to do the right thing. “You have nothing to be sorry about.” She reached up to muse his hair a bit then brushed his bangs out of his face. “He’s alive because you didn’t give up. You followed your gut and remained persistent. That’s truly an admirable quality, Myles.” “You’re still young, with your whole life ahead of you. You’re going to make mistakes, that’s just a fact of life; we’re human, it’s how we learn. But as long as you understand and accept the consequences then don’t stop what you’re doing.” Jeremy would kill her for telling him that but there were worse things in this world that Myles could be involved in and she actually believed him when he said he was just trying to protect people. Unfortunately, as she recently learned firsthand, there are some battles she is not equipped to handle and there may come another time when he may be their only hope.

His brows remained knit but he relaxed a little bit with her assurance. "...He was furious when he found out," he finally admitted. "...He was so mad at me. He acted like--like I was back on drugs or something."
He said it quickly, like it was some horrible confession and the words burned his mouth. He didn't talk about that part of his life. Ever. Even Jeremy only glossed over it. It was in the past, where it belonged, but Myles was red with shame. "I'm not," he insisted. "I know I'm not trained like you two. But when Jeremy got over it and listened, he understood. He doesn't like me going out, but he was more upset that I was keeping secrets. It's just--if you're not part of this, you don't get it. I didn't ask for that costume or those powers. It's not a game and I know that. But--do you know what this is?" he asked, and then suddenly pulled the glistening little starseed out of his pocket? It glinted in the light and while it was dim it wasn't dead.
"This is--this is someone's soul, Erica," he said in hushed tones. "Jeremy knows about it because I told him. He got stuck there because some of the bad guys took this from someone--because they were eating them. If these are destroyed--this starseed--then it means that person is gone forever. But like this...even if they're gone...they can be reborn. They can another chance. This isn't just bad people doing bad things that can be fixed--this is erasing people from existence. And there are monsters that just sneak around and steal energy--I don't want to hurt people, or break buildings, or get anyone in trouble. I just--if I can just save one person, then my life has meaning too! And I--" he realized somewhere along the way that his nose was clogged, that his eyes were watering, and he sniffled. "...Jeremy's the most important person in my life, Erica. I couldn't have found him without you two. I'm just being stupid right now, I'm sorry. I haven't slept much. I'm just really happy Jeremy's back," he said, thumb running over the smooth side of the starseed as he held it loosely so she could still see it.
