Five days.

Jeremy had been gone for five days.

Myles wasn't used to hearing from him every few hours--Jeremy was always checking in on him to make sure he wasn't getting into trouble.

Myles had known something was wrong after six hours. He had called the office and been given a dismissive message. Jeremy took double shifts sometimes. He rarely slept at the precinct, but there were nights when it happened. He was told to check back in come morning, as if this were some office job.

He was there at five in the morning. He stayed until nine.

They wouldn't let him file a missing person's report, it hadn't been long enough. They had treated him like a child worried about some monster under the bed. The precinct was useless. A handful of officers assured him it was probably just a mistake--things happened. He might have fallen asleep in the squad car.

Nobody cared to check. The GPS systems had been wonky, they weren't concerned when they couldn't track the car. Jeremy had a good track record, they weren't worried about him. They said he probably didn't get in trouble--like trouble didn't just find you in Destiny City.

He'd come back several times throughout the day to ask. To beg for help.

By the time they let him file a report he hadn't eaten or slept; he was dizzy and couldn't focus. He filled out all the information he could.

And then, he waited.

His phone was always on him. He called, he texted.

He waited.

He could barely eat, could barely sleep.

He waited.

Powered up or as just Myles, he was looking for his brother. He couldn't do it alone. He posted online, he printed flyers, he asked everyone--everyone--he knew.

He was pale, with dark circles under his eyes. He was disheveled, thinner than usual, and marched himself into the precinct to beg for updates. He didn't care if his eyes were red and watery, didn't care that he hadn't changed his clothes since yesterday, didn't care that the front office worker was tired of him asking for updates.

It was seven at night and he swallowed the lump in his throat as he looked around for a familiar face to give him anything. Too many officers looked away, already tired of him. Some were overworked. Some just didn't care.

His stomach sank lower but he tried to keep a straight face as he looked for someone he could trust.

For the last week, Erica had been away on vacation, well kind of anyway. While it was nice to spend time with her parents and see their new home, it was by no means fun or relaxing. If anything she had put in more work trying to help them pack up their house and drive through several states to Arizona then the Star Festival where she had to chase down those magic-wielding terrorists.

It was exhausting and she hurt in places she didn’t know was possible considering how active of a lifestyle she already had. But man, those bruises on her shins were not going to be going away anytime soon that’s for damn sure.

Needless to say, her ability to answer her phone was spotty at best since a grand portion of her trip had her coasting along the freeway through dead zones that lasted a solid hour before the next rest stop or gas station came into view. If anything important was going on back in Destiny City she was definitely last on the call list to try and reach. As such Erica had no idea that Jeremy had been missing for the last several days.

“God, he’s back again?” she heard one officer mutter as they poured themselves a cup of coffee. Officer Griffin glanced over her shoulder in curiosity but ultimately shrugged and went back to her desk assuming they were probably talking about some druggie that had been picked up for indecent exposure in the park again.

But then she saw a familiar face and paused. “Myles?” Her voice was full of concern as she set the manila folder down on her desk and walked over to the young man. “You look like death warmed over. What happened? Are you ok?”

Drew was deeply concerned about Officer Fischer and Myles as well, or at least he would have been if he had known. He was currently on a hunt looking for 5 gold rings, in a purple chevy on Burble Street. He didn’t think there was a Burble Street. It was the fifth wild chase he’d been on in two days. Probably part of his new officer hazing.

Usually Officer Fischer (he still couldn’t bring himself to call his mentor by his first name) would protect him from the hazing, but he couldn’t be everywhere, and today he seemed to be off.

Now he dragged himself back into his desk, left foot in a concrete bucket, another paint bucket having been dumped on his head and paint down his uniform, as well as another bucket of what seemed to be bird poop dumped down his right shoulder, compliments of hazing.

“For those that are concerned, there is NO Burble Street in Destiny Street,” Drew commented, irked. A few officers chuckled.

Then he saw a woman Officer he did not know
go up concerned to who but low and behold a distraught Myles. Myles looked worse than Drew. Drew dragged himself over. “Myles! Are you alright? What’s happened?”

Erica was back. He almost breathed easier--and Drew was there, though he'd clearly seen better days. Myles' brows were knit as he looked the man over quickly. He wanted to worry, to fret. He didn't have the energy. All he could think about was Jeremy.

"Actually, I'm just here to ask about Jeremy," he mumbled. His lips were numb and his tongue felt like lead. He forced a smile but it never reached his eyes and just looked sad on his face. He was trying, and failing, to pretend like everything was all right.

His voice was too quiet, too stressed. His hands were in front of him and he had tugged at a loose thread on his sleeve so much that it had badly frayed. "...I guess there's no update on any of that, then?"

It was dejected acceptance, and though he seemed to have expected it, he deflated all the same.

"...Nobody here...is really looking, are they?"

First day back and Officer Griffin didn’t even have a chance to check her e-mail before being confronted with problems that arose while she was away on vacation. It seemed like in her absence some of the other officers took certain… liberties… with welcoming Officer Drew Fischer to their precinct. She didn’t remember the hazing being that bad when she joined, granted it could also be because she was a female and they didn’t want to toe the line of sexual harassment. Either way, his appearance was rather startling.

Unfortunately, his rather unique predicament would have to wait as Myle’s concern for his brother's whereabouts took a little bit of a higher importance. “I’m sorry, I have idea what’s going on. I haven’t been brought up to speed yet. Why don’t you come take a seat for a moment and fill me in, ok?” Erica placed a hand on the young man's shoulder and with her other hand directed him towards the spare seat next to her desk.

She glanced back at Drew and offered him a few napkins then motioned with her head for him to follow.

Officer Drew Bones took the napkins gratefully. He patiently listened to Myles, as he got the worse off his uniform. With a little prodding, he also got his leg out of the concrete - fortunately it was still wet. Then he took the seat next to Myles, his face creased in worry.

“I’m so sorry, Myles. I should have known. I mean,” he glared around the other officers. “If he was here, he would be protecting me from this crap.” He flicked some bird poop from his shoulder. Unaffected by the pun he just made, he continued.

“I mean, he’s always here for me, and when he wasn’t, I should’ve known then.” He looked furious with himself.”

“So Officer Griffin,” he said after a moment. “What’s our first move?”

Myles had taken a seat and recounted everything he could to the officers, but he kept glancing over their shoulders, back to the other officers as if he expected them to try and chase him out or separate him now that he was actually with someone who was talking to him.

"I'm sorry," he said to Drew. "He talks about you often, about how he's proud of you. And he said you were going on vacation," he said to Erica. He was having a hard time keeping his hands steady.

"I just don't understand how no one could find him. Can't they track the GPS on his cell phone? Isn't anyone worried about a police car missing? I just. I begged them to keep me updated on anything they found, and they haven't found anything. How is that possible? --Is there some secret file, is there--is there anything?" he begged, desperate. He leaned forward and sucked in a breath; his brows were knit tightly and he looked like any second he might just burst into tears.

"--Is there a lead officer on the case? A file? --You both know my brother. You know how hard he works, how much he cares. If something's happened to him--if he needs help--we have to help him. And if no one else will, I don't know what I'm going to do. I need you. I need to be able to do something. Please."

Officer Griffin took in the information and once Myles was done she placed her elbows on her desk, laced her fingers together and closed her eyes for a moment as she processed what she had been told.

In Jeremy’s absence both Miles and Drew were her responsibility and while it could be dangerous to bring his brother along, leaving him here didn’t seem much of an option either. “The only reason I can see them not tracking a GPS is if he is assisting in an undercover case.” Problem with that was that Jeremy wasn’t one to offer to do something so dangerous, not when he had Miles to consider.

Erica sighed then stood up from her seat. “Ok, Drew. I want you to go to the locker room and get cleaned up. They should have spare uniforms available.” As he was, there was no way she was letting him in her patrol vehicle

“Myles, I’m not going to sugar coat this. I don’t know what happened to him. I can follow up with the police chief but he may end up telling me the same thing as he did you.” Her heart went out to the kid, well young man, but in her eyes he was still stumbling his way through life. He was far more mature now than when she had first met him but there was still room to grow and this concern he had for his brother was definitely a step in the right direction for him.

“If you’re going to accompany us on a ridealong then you need to eat something. I don’t care if you’re hungry or not.” Her voice was firm in that statement.”Arguing won’t sway my mind, I can’t have you passing out on me. Deal?” There was a basket of fruit in the kitchen area and some muffins she could grab him. Assuming Officer Sanders didn’t polish off the last of the coffee there should be at least one cup left.

Officer Fischer was proud of Drew? And spoke of him often? Then he certainly needed to get his rear in gear and stop getting hazed. Give him something to be proud of.

“Thank you for your kind words, Myles. Actually, I was told that your brother was off today.” There were some growls as though Drew was lying but he was not. “I was somewhat suspicious- but well, I’ve kind of been put to work on a lot of wild chases lately as you can tell. I am so sorry. I will help you get to the bottom of this though.”

Then Officer Griffin gave him some instructions. Drew nodded and got up. Some of the poop fell off his shoulder, and one of the other officers snickered, but he just ignored them. With a brisk walk he hurried into the locker room and went to his locker. What he hadn’t told Officer Griffin was that he brought spare uniforms with him everyday to work just for situations similar to this… well, not where his mentor had gone missing.

Drew quickly grabbed a uniform out of his locker, a clean towel and his soap and shampoo (and anything else he would need. He had become a pro at this due to the frequent hazing in the last few days. He was in and out and in his uniform in 17 minutes (not 15, because of the wet concrete).

He returned to Officer Griffin’s with the only sign that something had even gone wrong was that his hair was slightly damp. Seeing as she was not ready yet, he went ahead and called down to the garage and ordered the Squad Car to be prepared. “Car’s ready.”

Myles had been visibly distressed when Drew mentioned that he'd been told Jeremy was off, and he squirmed in his seat, trying very hard not to look sick. When Drew left, he had confirmed to Erica that he would eat--he'd do whatever it took to let him go along with her.

He had remained seated in the waiting room; after she brought him a muffin, a banana, and a cup of coffee, he had scarfed it all down. She was barely out of sight by the time he'd dutifully finished. He clutched the empty cup and had waited, eyes darting up every time there was movement in the room.

When Drew returned, he was anxious again--but Erica appeared back from around the corner with a folder and Myles nearly stood up to ask if she had any updates. Instead, he just seemed to shrink into himself and look up pleadingly.

“Ok, I have a lead on where to start.” She set the file down for a moment to make sure she had all her gear on before handing Myles a bullet proof vest and a bottle of water.

“It’s just a ride along. Follow my instructions when we get there and if I tell you to get in the car, then get in the car.” Erica’s voice was firm as she laid out the rules before they left the building. “Jeremy would have my head if I didn’t have you wear this.” She turned to pull her jacket on and grab her keys out of the top drawer.

“Then again he’ll probably have my head for bringing you along,” the last part was muttered under her breath yet loud enough for Myles to hear. She smirked then clapped a hand on both men’s shoulders. “Alright, let's get out of here.”
