She was homeschooled by her parents, learning the basic classes... all with an artsy twist. When it would normally come time to go to Hogwarts, but Aileas didn't get her letter. Apparently she was a squib. Luckily, her parents didn't think any less of her, and continued to foster her in a happy, nurturing environment.

She studied the arts, starting with art history, then moving into a digital arts program. She graduated with high honors, having gotten some of the best grades in the school. While searching for a job, Aileas met a wonderful lawyer and the two quickly started a wonderful relationship. Falling in love, they got engaged, despite Nova's parents absolutely detesting the idea. Despite it all, the two got married in an intimate ceremony with just their close family and friends. Shortly thereafter, Nova got her own little firm, finally free to be their own boss... and Aileas couldn't be more proud.

They tried to push her into her girly side, getting frustrated that she preferred dressing in boyish clothes. They figured packing her with only dresses and skirts would help when she went off to LoneStar Academy.

While studying, Nova started crushing on a girl in her class, much to the chagrin of her parents. Despite doing well in most classes, Ted and Gabrielle were both incredibly disappointed, though it had less to do with classes and more with the confession of her crush. A couple years later, Nova realized that she was nonbinary, leaning more masculine than feminine. One of her cool teachers helped her get a binder and cut off her long hair, earning the first genuine joy from Nova. After graduation, their parents cut her off, refusing to accept Nova's life.

Soon after, Nova was able to pay down the rent on a small office building (thanks in part to Aileas' weird ability to save), then they set up their own law firm, proudly placing the name Saylor on the deed.

xxx✬PERSONALITY✫xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx EMOTIONAL Vera has always been very sensitive and feels very strongly. Her emotions and instincts guide her, and her thinking always falls in line with feelings, however they swing. Whether or not she intends to, Vera spends a lot of time ruminating on her life and past. She remembers her life very vividly, and relives it over and over, immersed in memories long past and searching for anything to explain the magic that apparently isn’t there. Some days she has better control of her feelings, while other days she drowns in them.
PARTICULAR Vera's space is always immaculately polished, her clothes are always pristinely pressed, and her hair is washed three times over and done without a hair out of place. While what constitutes “perfect” may vary with mood and place, she is very consistently particular about organizing and cleaning and often bothered when other people--particularly her younger brothers--do not share the same standards. As such, she has a tendency to get controlling as she works through details. This attention to detail though, serves her well in her work, where, combined with her memory, allows her to memorize and later replicate lace and embroidery patterns precisely.
STRONG WILLEDVera doesn’t give up, pursuing her goals and interests with undeterred determination. This determination and passion for seamstry is what built her skills such that she finally feels like she can compete with wizarding designers and dressmakers, even as a squib. She believes quite strongly that she is in control of her mind, emotions and memories and chooses to drown in them instead of just being consumed by them sometimes-- and no one outside could possibly know her better than she knows herself. She has gotten easier to work with professionally because she sees herself primarily as a dressmaker whose job it is to translate the vision of the designer. Generally though, once decided, Vera has a habit of digging in her heels and doubling down. She hates to be wrong and hates even more to apologize.
JADEDFrom mean kids, her grandparents’ superiority complex, her parents’ arguments, her father’s disappearance, the child protective services agent’s indifference, to her own romantic messiness, Vera has learned over that reality is unsympathetic. Love doesn't exist except in fairy tales, dreams aren't real, authority can’t be trusted. She also recognizes that despite her mistrust of people, she now has two wonderfully supportive and understanding parents, and friends that remember and value her presence. So while she might change her mindset about particular situations and people over time, her cynicism remains her first line of defense.
AESTHETICDespite her cynicism, Vera loves beautiful events like weddings and parties, and chases weddings in particular for the taste of “secondhand love”. She embodies whatever mood or aesthetic she’s fixated on, and is constantly updating her spaces to chase the aesthetic ideal—whether that be cottagecore or dark academic, minimalist chic, naturalistic, etc—themes and aesthetics resonate very strongly with Vera, and she infuses that resonance into her life and work. After all, if she has to remember something anyways, it may as well be something beautiful.

xxx✬BACKSTORY✫xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx ✬✫EARLY CHILDHOOD Susan's earliest memory was when she was five, scattering flower petals in the breeze at her parents’ wedding. She remembers the lacework on her mom’s dress, the corsage on her dad’s suit, the smiles on their faces. The three of them seemed happy enough together, living in a small townhouse in Winchester, England. Her mother, Halinor, made floral arrangements in a flower shop she had worked in since high school; Suzie loved helping, even if it was just making sure tools and books always went back to where they came from. Her father, Guillian, was an herbologist and cursebreaker consultant that ran his family’s gardens in Stirling, Scotland; Suzie loved how he would swing her onto his shoulders and “fly” around with a tennis ball charmed to hover around.
She remembers the first fight. A casual conversation grew heated, and finally, Guillian left through the fireplace. One fight led to another until finally they stopped fighting at all. The separation had been amicable, but inevitably ended in divorce.
✬✫SCHOOL and SURRENDER Amongst her mother’s frequent visitors was one Nari Siddall, and Suzie occasionally saw her son Nimbus at school. Nimbus’s best friend was Wren Winchester, a rude boy who always called her socks and outfit “mismatched”. Once, she overheard the pair talking to snakes. She told their classmates, thinking it would be fun information, but no one believed her. Then in second grade, Suzie overheard the boys talking about how Nim’s mother’s death might not be an accident. This time the rumors started like wildfire. Wren confronted her about starting the rumors, and she lost the fight--no doubt because the boy used magic, Suzie blamed— but he left the school afterwards anyways, leaving her free to befriend Nim for herself. Even though the kids in the class still thought she was weird, Suzie was happy to thereafter have a friend-- at least for a while.
Suzie herself didn’t show any signs of magic as a young girl, no matter how much she tried to make magic happen from the moment she knew it was a thing. At first, it didn’t bother her. She was just a late-blooming child, her wizard-father had always assured. She learned as much as she could about magic in the meantime. Her brother though, almost 7 years younger, was a mere toddler when he started levitating pudding boxes into the shopping cart. Galen was different: His face changed, his hair changed-- everything about him seemed to shift fluidly along.
Galen had other health problems, ones that Halinor struggled to manage. While Guillian was still paying child support, the man himself had gone missing on an extended cursebreaking job. Halinor was caught playing a balancing act between keeping Galen hidden at home (or magical homes nearby) and risking exposure. Ultimately, the child support services witch assigned to their case didn’t think Halinor was doing a good job. Halinor had tried her best to cooperate with the support services--up until they tried to take Galen away. Friday, 1 December 2051– Halinor reacted violently--desperately--and finally they stunned her, and removed Galen and Suzie to Wool’s Orphanage. Suzie found out on Monday that her mother had been obliviated, and they were to be left at Wool’s.
Initially, Susan was angry but ambivalent, saying that in a few months she’d be going to Hogwarts anyways. When her letter didn’t come, she felt confused and betrayed. Surely this was some mistake. She continued studying what she could, as though knowing the magic would allow her to do it, but the years passed, and still no letter. For a long time, she didn’t know if she wanted a new home and went constantly back and forth. Part of her insisted she’d be fine on her own, but the other half was desperate for a fresh start. A new home, a new family, maybe even a new name.
Galen, by contrast, made friends with everyone. He was friends with another metamorphmagus called Cassidy and then a girl called Harmony. But both of them got adopted without Susan. Bitter and angry, Susan didn't answer Harmony's letters for a long while-- her former friend was off sailing the high seas and she was stuck going to a stupid muggle school.
✬✫JOB and ADOPTIONOn 15 June 2049, Cassidy was adopted. As she watched Galen mope by the window with a river of hair and nostalgia, Susan’s heart hardened. By the end of August, she had given up on her birthparents. She told Galen to stop telling people they were related so he at least might have a chance of adoption, and resolved to graduate out of Wool’s and find her own place.
As soon as Susan turned 15, she applied to work at Slug and Jigger's in Diagon Alley. Work gave her an opportunity to actually put the knowledge she had been studying seemingly fruitlessly to use. Studying itself felt easier with memories attached. She saved her earnings, putting them towards getting magical supplies at Madame Ursula’s Fortune Shop or towards her future apartment.
In Summer of 2051, Vernova and Aileas Saylor started coming to Wool's and soon after adopted her, Galen, and Wally. Afterwards, Susan officially changed her name entirely, to Vera Yves Saylor, after her favorite fashion designers and new parent. Homeschool with Nova and Aileas went much better than muggle schooling, and Vera applied herself assiduously to even old subjects. She pased the GCSE without incident and, at her parents' recommendation, she started interning at the Bewitched Boutique while continuing at the apothecary.
✬✫ROMANCE AND CAREERVera’s first encounter with romance was unfortunately a disaster– a drunken evening in late 2052 with Yukon Knolle. He was gallant, sensitive, funny, and immediately lovable. He also burst out crying partway through the night, grieving the loss of his fiancee earlier in the year. The experience left Vera hurt, confused, and angry.
Vera and Harmony Aindrias flirted while Harmony was in school. It took Vera a while to admit her own attraction and sexuality, but eventually after talking to Nova, Vera came around. She and Harmony were together for 3 magical years–Harmony even helped her see her hyperthymesia in a more positive light. But their career goals were too difference and eventually the long-distance relationship fell apart – after a particularly brutal fight when Vera said things she couldn't–or rather, stubbornly didn’t– take back, they officially split in late August 2057.
While her own dating life left her jaded, Vera was inspired by her friends’ weddings and a started a little annex to the Bewitched Boutique where she worked on wedding gowns and suits and helped plan weddings. She sourced flowers from friendly wizarding businesses such as Bouquets and Bowtruckles in Diagon Alley, and cakes from For Goodness Bakes. While she no longer worked there, Vera retained ties to Slug and Jiggers.
The winter before his graduation, Milan Wellbelove, a frequent customer and son of the glamorous wizarding designer Charlotte Wellbelove, mentioned starting a shop together, focused on bespoke and haute couture with a special emphasis on wedding events. With Lena’s blessing as her master in design and dressmaking, Vera put her all into the shop– and after a dizzying Fashion Week, on 20 August 2060, Cloak and Coven launched.

xxx☻PERSONALITY☺xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx KIND Galen would like to be the kind of kind that heals hurt. Less concerned about nice words or following rules, Galen wants to encourage people to play the game of life to their best -- he listens to people and tries to find what is hurting and help them solve that, or at least face that. This isn’t always what people want or think is right, but it does come from genuine care.
DIPLOMATIC Galen is happiest when everyone can work together. He listens to what people need and looks for opportunities to bring people together for mutual benefit. He believes the best plans are always those that have the best parts of many plans, so is always willing to compromise or help negotiate a compromise. Especially when it’s just him feeling a certain way, he’s quick to yield or concede if he thinks it’ll make people work together better. He always asks why people do mean things and is usually willing to make an excuse for them.

Small pranks and jokes are always welcome, and even though he doesn't say rude joking things, he's willing to play along. Due to a heart defect, he can’t always run around and play for very much, but he does what he can-- whether it’s an impromptu dress up session or a meticulously detailed Dungeons and Dragons campaign, Galen just wants people to enjoy themselves and enjoy life.
PHILOSOPHICAL Galen enjoys thinking about abstract ideas or just thinking about things “like an alien”. He tries very hard to make a metaphor out of everything, and to see something deep and meaningful in every whim of the universe. He has tried reading about wizarding and muggle philosophers and enjoys what he knows, but doesn't always keep them straight.
HONEST Despite just wanting to be kind, Galen has basically been conditioned into honesty -- His meta ability meant his body literally telegraphed everything he felt, from guilt over a small lie to hurt at an offhand comment. Even without this though, he thinks it’s always best to be honest, and “white lies” are cover ups for deeper issues that could be better off discussed or accepted. The only time Galen will ever even try to be less than honest is for some in-game strategery.

xxx☻BACKSTORY☺xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx ☻☺EARLY CHILDHOOD Galen was three when he was taken to Wool’s. He doesn’t remember his birth parents at all, even if he has their pictures memorized. He doesn’t remember levitating pudding and baby food around, to the amazement and horror of the muggles around. He doesn’t remember shifting colors and faces with every giggle. From his sister's stories, he knows a little about Winchester, and a little less about Stirling. Instead, Wool’s was his first home, and the Wool's residents his first family. He asked his sister a lot of questions about their mother or father, but sometimes she didn't reply, saying it was better for him not to think about things that aren’t true anymore.
As he struggled to control his meta ability, Galen was happy to be homeschooled by Steffi and Luke. He couldn't read or do numbers very well, but he showed good interest in learning stories, playing games, and helping out around the place. While he couldn't run around too long without risking heart issues and spent more time sick than he'd like, Galen proved to be curious and persistent--if forgetful and irresponsible.
Galen's closest friend and fellow meta Cassidy was adopted in June of 2049 and while he was happy for his friend, he never forgot that goodbye. Two years later, Nova and Aileas Saylor started coming to Wool's. Galen adored Aileas immediately, and was ecstatic when the Saylors proposed adopting him, his sister, and his new friend Wally. The five lived at the Saylor Farmhouse in Killin, Scotland, where they were homeschooled in magic and art. Galen and Cassidy reconnected, and Galen put more effort into learning to control his meta changes.
When he turned 11, Galen both dreaded and looked forward to going to Hogwarts. He didn't want to leave his family, but he was curious to learn more magic.
☻☺SCHOOL YEARS ☻FIRST YEAR Galen started out his first year in detention after he and Cassidy tried (poorly) impersonating each other and others on the first day of class. He received a howler from Aileas and Vera about his behavior, served his detention cheerfully, and was relatively undisruptive afterwards, focused on getting better at Flying, classes, and clubs.
☺SECOND YEAR was a blast because Wally was joining him! Even though Wally was sorted in a different house, they shared the dungeons, and Galen was happy to drag Wally around with the Metafectas--at least he could befriend Simon's cousin Kai! Otherwise, the year was spent in a happy blend of Quidditch, Clubs, and ..oh yeah, class! In Spring, he heard Simon's voice for the first time--although since it triggered a panic attack, Galen wasn't too happy about it and focused on comforting his friends.
☻THIRD YEAR Galen joined up with 6 electives on top of captaining The Order of the Stick, which he was quite confused by, but happy to help. He otherwise passed time having fun conversations with people and enjoying school and clubs.
☺FOURTH YEAR was spent mostly just hanging out with his Metafecta buddies and keeping busy with classes and clubs. He took over as captain of the Cooking Club but immediately started training Sammie Bardsdale and Pepijn Ter Avest, second years, to run it, given their love of food.
☻FIFTH YEAR Galen approached OWLs year with his usual optimism and sense of serenity-he studied diligently, but didn't treat it differently than any other exam or learning opportunity. He realized during this time he was crushing on his housemate Nora Dashwood, with whom he shared quite a few clubs with. For now, they were friends at least!
☺SIXTH YEAR Over the summer Angier Zheng had died while at Wool's--Galen was sad about the news, but going back to school and seeing his girlfriend, Yari, and best friend, Milan, grieving was worse. Given Angier had died in an animagus accident, he was all at once surprised Nora had been doing an Animagus, relieved she was safe, overjoyed she had succeeded, and embarrased when he first encounted her terrier form. During a pick-up Quidditch game in March, Galen suffered an attack during a Quidditch match, sending him reeling to the ground. During his extended Hospital Wing stay, he got to know Milan better, and he Nora started flirting. Once Galen was out, he and Nora went on a few dates, all of which he at least thought was a ton of fun!

NIHILISTIC Wally has a negative view of the world and assumes by default most don't care about him or his hardships unless they have something to gain. Everyone is just in it for themselves and will step on others if needed. He tends to assume people are going to be mean from the get go, even if he doesn't say it. Even though he wants to be proven wrong he doubts he is.
SKEPTICAL Wally rarely trusts anyone or anything till he can prove he is not going to get double crossed or find out the truth. He automatically assumes someone is either lying or sugar coating something when the truth is told. While skeptical He's not a total d**k he does appreciate it when someone wants to help him. He doesn't hate people, just the things they do. While hesitant to trust he does want to have people he can put trust in.
ASTUTE Wally is very perceptive of what's going on around him and notices and remembers details and conversations that he's had. He is pretty good at noticing when he is not being told everything or if someone is generally omitting information. He is good at recalling detailed memories of places he's been or things he's experienced. He has a good memory though there's plenty he would rather forget.
POSSESSIVE Wally was used to having very little as such he prefers not to share and is protective of what possessions he has. Who knows if the other person cares for the item as much as he does? He trusts very few with his stuff and doesn't care if he comes off as a jerk in order to protect his things. Even with people he trusts he is still uneasy letting them handle his stuff even when they've proven themselves trustworthy.
BRAVE Even if Wally is scared he will stand his ground. Weakness has never got him anywhere and sometimes in more danger than before. He would much rather fight for himself because he assumes no one else will. How can he expect others to try to protect him if he can't protect himself? He's also a potty mouth, he picked it up from how he was raised and doesn't care if people don't like it or punish him for it.
RESILIENT Wally has developed a thick skin over time. He is used to being insulted and told he's worthless and doesn't put much stock in what people say about him. He tends to blow off unconstructive criticism completely and even takes constructive criticism with a grain of salt. He sees himself as one of the few advocates for his wants and needs. He doesn't care if others dont like him. That is their problem not his.

EARLY CHILDHOOD Wally was born to parents that honestly should never have been parents. His parents spent nearly any money they had for drugs barely having enough to feed themselves or the child they brought into the world. What little they did with their son was to use Wally to get their fix. What cop would search a kid for drugs? Being too young to understand what he was doing, he tried to do what he was told and be a good boy. He would hide things when his parents asked him too. Sometimes he was even asked to go get a bag from some house to bring him but was told not to look in the bag. As he got older he learned why his parents acted differently all the time. It had to be the drugs he would find by them when they were passed out. He even tried asking them to stop doing drugs as he didn’t like it when they were like that. However, he asked at the wrong time. Right when they had gone longer than normal without any kind of fix. Wally knew the bruises would heal his innocence and trust would not. He hardly even noticed that his parents were arguing over the mysterious disappearance of their drugs caused by his magic.
He had always thought He had been picking up food or something important. But one day he decided to look in the bag. What would his parents do? Hit him again? As he feared it was more drugs. He was part of their problem. He regretfully took the bag to them as he normally did. Soon after, he started to notice there would be times there wouldn't be anything to eat at home. He had been used to stealing lunches from lockers to have dinner when he got home during these times but there was hardly anything at all, all the time now.
Suddenly his parents told him there was a very special pick up this time. After getting hit for mouthing off by asking what was so special about this bag he was set off to a new location. He got suspicious when the bag he normally got wasn't there. Wally then got picked up by the local drug guy who said something about his parents finally paying off their bill. Did they seriously sell him to cover their damn drug bill?! Wally freed himself by biting hard in the guy's arm and running as fast as he could. Being small gave him an advantage and he evaded his pursuers.
Knowing his parents didn't care about him anymore, he ran to the police station who were very interested in what he had to say. Even while being a key witness he was still pretty standoffish. How was he going to be sure that he wasn't going to get double-crossed? But he was proven wrong when lots of arrests were made and he was legally separated from his parents. Expecting to be thrown into foster care he was surprised to go to an orphanage called Wools. Well, at least they had food. Hopefully, he would get to stay here till he was old enough. Unless they would try and sell him too. If his parents didn't want him, who would?
Wally had expected to spend his years at Wools little did he know he would find a family that actually wanted him. He gained parents that gave a s**t and 2 siblings! It took a while to get used to a home and family that cared. His moms were patient and understanding and made sure Wally felt safe enough to drop old survival habits. Wally's acceptance moment was when he got gifted a stuffed friend from his new parents. It was one he had been eyeing at the store but thought he wouldn't get it so he never asked. He may not trust many people but he does his family. While initially doubtful he was magic he was excited to get his Hogwarts letter! Now he could go with Galen this year!
