The ability to detect chaos, to track it, and to isolate patterns. It was all just a little good to be true and it was safe to say that Athalia's eyebrow had soared when the feline had declared with absolute confidence that this was how it worked and the gigantic thing in the corner of his 'basement' happened to be the key to its existence.
If it did work then Athalia would concede that Orias had stumbled upon something that he could see genuine value in. To have the ability to monitor, track and warn others in advance that they might be at risk could save a lot of lives, and he wasn't otherwise inclined to dismiss this possibility just yet. It certainly sounded fanciful and his experiences with Mauvian technology were severely limited, but if rumours were to be believed then maybe the crazed Maine Coon was on to something.
Unsurprisingly, with doubt came the desire to prove a point and when Athalia hadn't seemed entirely convinced that it would work, what had started as a relaxing week had transformed into an evening outing to one of the more questionable areas of town. Athalia knew it from past experiences, he'd encountered several chaotic beings in this vicinity and if anywhere was going to a potential hot spot then this would be one of them.
Having entered one of the more dilapidated warehouses the senshi had taken more than one look round before he was assured that they were alone before stepping further inside. Long abandoned and left to rot in its current state, this part of town had no hope of restoration while its reputation remained as it was.
"All right," he spoke at last, glancing over his shoulder. "How does this thing work?" he asked as he held up the little beetle shaped device.

Orias, for once, waited dutifully outside the warehouse while Athalia did an initial sweep. After all, this part of town reminded him strongly of his days before he'd come into the senshi's care. It wasn't something he cared to think about, a time before his beer, his bed, his amazing and unfettered intellect. Dark days indeed. That didn't stop the Mauvian from clambering onto a dusty pile of shipping crates and peeking through a cracked and grimed window while his friend peered about. When the all clear was given, the feline's bravado returned full force. Dropping down from his perch and trotting through the entrance to the spooky warehouse, Orias planted his front paws on his flanks and rose to rest on his hindquarters. His little kitty nostrils flared as he inhaled deeply. "Aaaaaah. You smell that Atty?" he responded to the query about his newest device. "That's the smell of opportunity. Opportunity and one-upsmanship, with just the barest hint of 'I told you so' in the finish. Subtle, yet bold." His whiskers twitched and the cat stopped snorting air quite so aggressively, followed by a cough. "Incidentally opportunity smells remarkably similar to a hobo that took a dump over in one of these corners. Careful not to get the two confused. This'll be great." Eyes watering a little, the Mauvian jumped upward to swipe the beetle transponder from Athalia's grip and stride confidently forward. Approaching one of the support beams, he stopped and turned back to his friend while holding up the device. "See this little round pad on the stomach area?" he asked, indicating a stretch of smooth metal the size of a small button. "You just press a thumb or something to it. It's actually a scanner. It'll detect that you're Order or whatever and activate." To demonstrate, Orias pressed a paw to the scanner and grinned widely as the faux insect came to life: legs waved in the air and mandibles clicked. Its owner acquiesced and let in clamber onto the support beam, where the disguised transponder slowly climbed higher and higher to perch far above. "See? It moves around a bit to not be suspicious, but not so much that someone wonders what the hell is wrong with that bug and comes over to see. The pad will even shut it down if someone with a Chaos signature picks it up! Genius, I know." Orias waved a paw at Athalia. "Now, grab your personal transponder and hit the key. This little guy should be transmitting now. The system will default to your immediate area using the closest node for pertinent scans." He looked rather smug. "You can do that little pinchy stretchy smartphone thing on the hologram that shows up to zoom in and out too."

"Bonus points for creativity," Athalia replied. He was referring to the movement of the little bug, something subtle enough to avoid suspicion without causing too much interest to warrant an investigation. A little twitch here and there seemed natural and provided that individuals didn't frequent the area and become too familiar with it, few would notice that the little sensor hadn't actually moved from that particular spot.
He'd already chosen to ignore Orias's otherwise colossal ego... If there was one thing that the senshi was learning to do, it was to tune out the moments when the Mauvian needed to express himself in that particular manner. Previous weeks would have seem him glaring, despairing are raising his eyes heavenwards in exasperation.
The Maine Coon's personality was simply a part of him now, an unavoidable and very difficult to ignore part of him.
Nevertheless, the Mauvian could back his gigantic ego up with a measure of competency. The Mauvian, when struck with inspiration, was often capable of delivering some particularly impressive items. If this particular one happened to do what he claimed it did, then the senshi was inclined to believe that this would be game changing for him. If it worked, he'd have eyes across the system, provided he ensured those eyes were placed... There would be few who could patrol their hunting grounds without him being aware that at some point they had been nearby.
...Well sort of.
He didn't necessarily understand the ins and outs of the things but it wasn't necessarily his job to understand how it worked, he just needed to know how to use it, right?
He pulled his own personal beetle out, flipping it over in his palm to press on the button as instructed. It took a few seconds, but just as the Mauvian had said, a tiny screen appeared and hovered above it, depicting something that he wasn't quite sure of.
"Radar?" he asked, reaching out with his spare hand to do the 'pinchy-stretchy' motion the feline had been referring to. The screen expanded, providing him with a much easier to read UI, but he still couldn't quite grasp what he was supposed to be looking for.
"All right, so what exactly does this thing do when it sees something; a dot, a ping, a picture of your smug face?" All right, so the last bit was a stretch, but he wouldn't have put it passed Orias to put it in just to wind him up.

"Oh, right. That'd be helpful wouldn't it? Guess you would've seen any youma when you were doing your Tom Cruise impersonation before I came in here." Orias flicked the tip of a tufted ear and gave an exaggerated yawn, enough to show gleaming kitty fangs. "Luckily for you, I plan ahead for these sorts of things. Behold!" With a flourish, the Mauvian whipped a small crystalline orb the size of a golf ball from his little fanny pack. Inside swirled what looked like smoke if it had taken liquid form. "Concentrated Chaos essence, semi-fresh from a dusted youma! Or it was fresh at the time. I guess a better term would be coagulated... or congealed. Either way, wasn't going to keep this thing in my sub-space. Get a smell in there and you'll spend years getting it out. No air filtration you know. "Anyhoo, I spent a lot of time getting even this much. It doesn't really hang around when the monsters go poof, so I had to do a lot of lurking at battlefields. By the way, you're right. Today's senshi suuuuuuuck at beating anything up. So, like, compliment for you." Jazz paws, and Orias nearly dropped his big ticket item. A quick fumble and it was secure between his forelimbs once more. "Well that would've been embarrassing. It's only impressive when you mean to do it!" With a gleeful grin the feline forcefully threw the orb to the ground between himself and Athalia. There was the tinkling of broken glass, a puff of smoke and what sounded like the world's most feeble death rattle, followed by a whiff of rankness that would put the hobo dump to shame. "Weeeheeeeooo! That could strip paint off of one of those old barns you always see in those movies!" Orias cackled, waving a paw in front of his watering eyes. "Dayum. Anyway, it's doing the thingy! Look!" The hologram on Athalia's transmitter now had a pulsing red dot on the map, placed squarely between two little white moons. "Neat huh? The circle means a weaker hit, and obviously the little moons are us. An exclamation point is a strong consistent signal, which we'd get if there was actually a youma standing there. Soon it'll turn yellow, then fade away when the signal is completely old and gone. I really should write a legend or key for these things, but I already know what the symbols mean." The cat shrugged, extending a foreleg and wiggling little kitty digits through the air where the smoke had vanished. "Never really had Chaos essence before. Wonder if it's good for anything aside from burning out nose hairs. Maybe if I got a huge glob of it I could use it like the T-Rex pee in that one Jurassic Park everyone hated! Just yeet it at little youma and watch them run, that'd be great. Good thing there aren't any around here though, that weak little stench would've made us seem like the snacks."

Tom Cruise impression? Athalia felt just a touch insulted, if only because he would have picked someone slightly taller to compare himself against. Nevertheless as the Mauvian continued to speak he could only shake his head and raise both eyebrows. If there was any Mauvian who would willingly gather, or even attempt to gather that kind of material, then Orias certainly seemed like the type. The senshi surmised that it was highly probably the cat had been drunk when he came up with that idea.
"I am not going to ask how, or when, you managed to collect that," he replied. He would applaud the ingenuity in a manner of speaking but that didn't mean he had to be comfortable that the cat had chosen to hold on to something like that. What if it had found a way to manifest and jump out at them? Sure, he'd have been fine in the end but if it had happened...
He never got to finish that particular thought, the Mauvian's explanation came to a close and before he had even had time to cover his nose, the smell hit him. Orias hadn't been lying about that one and the man released a large, deep breath to at least try and push the stench away. He made a mental note to categorically ban the cat from storing that sort of stuff anywhere in the house, regardless of the state it might be in.
Living or 'dead', that sort of essence would remain outside.
He obediently cast his gaze down towards the little panel in front of him and sure enough, just as Orias had indicated, the flicker of activity occurred on his screen. In moments it had dissipated once more, leaving nothing save for the two Order signatures that existed on the map.
"Circles for weak, explanation point something bigger, makes sense," he said with a nod and glanced back up towards the twitching beetle on the beam. A moment later he'd returned his gaze towards his new found tool and narrowed his eyes. Well that had looked like it had been there before now had it...?
Just 'off' the screen a cluster had started to appear, little pings of circular activity that seemed to imply that something was nearby. Currently out of Athalia's range, he couldn't sense exactly what it was but if he were to interpret this as Orias had described then that would seem to indicate that they were not, in fact, alone.
...Or they wouldn't be shortly.
"I'm going to assume this means we're about to have company?" he queried and pointed at the little map. "I can only assume the scent of 'deceased' youma sparked their curiosity." He finished. It was either that or they'd detected both Orias and Athalia's energy signatures on their approach, either was a possibility, but in the end they would still be upon them soon.

"Pft, all's fair in the name of science and awesomeness Reggie," came the response. "Besides, if not for me you wouldn't know what squidgy youma fart smoke looked AND smelled like. That one's gonna stay with you a while eh?" Orias chuckle snorted, elbowing the much taller man's shin as though they were sharing a good joke. Obviously he was quite pleased with the reaction, despite being a victim of the stench himself. Science wasn't always glamorous anyway. "So, are you going to help me set these things up now? It isn't the easiest thing getting around the big city on my own four paws while carrying a bundle of fake bugs. It's a big place, and you have a car! I mean I guess I could have B.U.T.L.E.R. cart me around, but he's sloooooow..." While the Mauvian chattered, he almost missed his companion's question regarding the new hits on the transponder. "Huh? I don't hear anything." Lifting a paw, he tapped a claw to the pendant that dangled from a new collar he'd fashioned for himself. Very classy and hip. His own display of the area map pinged by the beetle bot projected into the air in front of him. "Oh yeah, you mean all these little blips around the edges here?" Orias placed both paws on the hologram and did the pully thing to zoom in. "Right at the edge of the range, but yep. Them's Chaos alright," he confirmed pleasantly. "See? It works! Now do your girly sparkly Power Rangers thing so we don't die before I get to revel in my own genius." Not one to sit idly by, the cat rummaged about in his subspace pocket up to his shoulder until he found what he was looking for: a nice frosty beer bottle. Another success, his localized temperature reduction worked to keep his beverages from tasting like crap. He was on fire! A bit more jingling retrieved a bottle opener, and with a hissing pop Orias was free to take a swig of his drink. "I'm way too sober for this," he sighed, taking another swallow. "But hey, more free youma essence!"

Athalia's brow didn't have the capacity to raise any higher, but it was safe to say it would have at the sound of the 'clip' from the beer bottle. Of all the times for the Mauvian to drink, he always picked the worst. Obviously Orias would disagree in that this was the perfect moment to do so, but generally speaking Athalia preferred to be sober for these sorts of encounter.
"Power Ranger things..." he sighed. To be fair it was an adequate comparison for some of the things he'd seen in recent months. Some rather questionable poses had been struck by both hero and villain, if they were in the middle of a kid's show it would have been quite appropriate. Alas, given the number of pings he had seen on that little device he had elected to regard this a little more seriously than he normally did.
"We need brute force," he corrected the Mauvian as he gazed around the warehouse for anything he might use to his advantage.
...Throwing bricks did not seem advantageous, it was too slow.
Nevertheless, even as the dots grew closer on the screen and Athalia began to hunt about around some of the more battered boxes, he didn't seem to be in a panic just yet. Things like this did, eventually, happen to work themselves out in the end. Sure enough, his patience was rewards when he found some particularly thick and heavy rope. He had nothing to strap to it, but considering his own increased strength there would be no reason he couldn't realistically use it to his advantage.
It'll do.
Stalking back towards his still sober companion he watched, waited, and when he saw the sliver of black push through the door he spun the rope around his arm and thrust it towards it with considerable force. His suspicions appeared to be correct in that respect, the impact alone was enough to shatter their first visitor into a mass of black dust.
"You need those things spread across the city?" he clarified while he still had time on his hands.
"Doable," he agreed with a nod. "If I'm already out, it makes sense that I put them up, especially if they can do this," he added.
Given their friend had met a very abrupt demise though, it wasn't just one who crept though the door next. In fact, it would have been safer to describe it as a flood, through doors, windows and any other available space they had manage to locate.
At least they were lesser youma, so he had that going for him, which was nice.
There just happened to be lots of them.

Orias chugged at his beer calmly, watching Atty do what Atty tended to do: hit stuff so hard it exploded. It was like his own brand of meathead magic, something only he could do. Enthralling in a way. That said, it only seemed to piss off all the other youma as they started crawling into the warehouse through every orifice. Chug chug. The Mauvian continued to nurse his alcohol with one paw while his other foreleg disappeared up to the shoulder into his subspace pocket. Nope, nope. Some more jingles and crashes, and he finally retrieved what he was looking for: a smaller six pack of beer and a lighter. To the casual observer, he might've looked as though he was about to fire up a stogie while having a comfortable night in the lounge. "Ah, here we go. My disgusting hipster IPA batch. Got it off some guy who hangs out at Whole Foods." Casually sauntering over to where Atty was standing and extending a claw to the dangling sash of the senshi's uniform, Orias sliced off six neat little strips of fabric and meandered back to his beer bottles. "Pop pop pop," he intoned cheerily, knowing Athalia would still be swinging his rope like a barbarian while the feline worked to snap the tops off the IPAs. "And we finish with a dip in the pool!" Having soaked the fabrics in alcohol, the Maine Coon stuck each one in the neck of a bottle and flicked open his lighter. "Fire in multiple holes!" he cackled gleefully, setting flame to the cocktails and hurling them at the biggest youma entryways. "Heh heh, firehole. Get it Atty?" Searing blazes roared to life where the Molotovs hit, giving the pair at least partial protection... or a future worry of being burned alive, but that was an issue for future Orias. Having drained the last of his good beer, he had a semi-buzzed epiphany and placed the neck of the bottle over his star like a focus. "Never even thought to try this," he mused, taking aim at a few youma nearing Athalia from the side. Focusing, the Mauvian fired his little star laser into the glass. As expected, the beam scattered like a prism akin to more of a kitty light shotgun... but also diffused its potency. Which was rather pathetic to begin with. None of the monsters even really staggered. "What the hell is the point of this stupid laser?" Orias yowled, hurling the empty bottle at the nearest youma and clocking it squarely in the face. "I swear, if we live I'm going to invent something that makes that thing useful!"

Thoroughly distracted, the Mauvian was more than capable of taking advantage of the senshi's current state. It was safe to say that the vandalism of his sash had gone largely unnoticed by the man who was, for the most part, otherwise engaged. With several youma streaming through every possible opening at once he could only twirl and spin the rope at a certain rate without causing himself some damage... either that, or he'd unintentionally clip the cat and send it hurtling into the great unknown.
He was aware of some noise, the normal chatter and tone of Orias's voice as he did something but given he wasn't screaming, Athalia had ascertained that the cat was safe for the time being.
What he hadn't anticipated was the stream of fire that soon began to roar across certain more flammable regions around the door frame, and the occasional window. It cut off several routes of escape, but also seemed to do the trick in preventing certain beasts from getting through. It wasn't entirely cut off but it certainly stemmed the flow through those entry points, funnelling towards the remaining 'open' ones and the senshi's awaiting make-shift weapon.
...A weapon that would soon be set alight at the ends as it flew above the flames and towards its next target. It would have made for quite an impressive sight in other circumstances, but both Orias and Athalia now found themselves in a potential inferno with very few exits. It was in those moments that the senshi did have to wonder where the hell they were coming from.
"Haven't you got something a little bigger?" he asked, a touch strained as he afforded a glance towards his companion. It was just in time to catch the Mauvian's 'despair' at his own personal failings (some sort of little laser beam) and its lack of impact.
"Maybe a bomb?" He hazarded. At any other point he might have been a little more reasonable but if they did intend to get out alive then they needed something a little bigger than a fire. In short, they needed something that would wipe out everything in the vicinity, even if it did take half the building down with it. If they were at least able to stumble out alive, then Athalia would likely have a little stamina left to ensure they both got away from the scene before anything or anyone came to inspect it.

Orias's eyes glimmered with the unshed tears of a joyful dream come true. "For real, Atty? You're asking for something bigger than fire, like a bomb? Weeeeooo I always knew this day would come!" he hollered. With manic grace the cat bounced from box to box to rafter to beam, clinging to the support pillar upon which his invention roosted and shimmying up to it lumberjack style. "Gotcha," he squealed in delight, sliding back down to a rafter and flicking out a claw. A little jimmying and the carapace-like casing popped off of the beetle, revealing the complicated circuitry within. Orias unceremoniously began ripping it all out. "Your sacrifice will be remembered," the cat swore solemnly, his other paw disappearing into his subspace. A jingle here, a rummage there... So long as it felt technological and not food-like he pulled it free and set it out in front of himself. It'd be enough. Thankfully he'd already had something to drink, as his muse had already whispered sweet nothings into the Mauvian's tufted ears. His paws were a blur as he performed his dream commission: building a bomb for Atty. "Done!" he cried in glee, holding up what looked like a taped-up wad of... junk. He was extremely proud of said junkwad. "Look Atty! Your requisition is ready!" Taking aim at the fiery melee below, Orias hurled the orb at the biggest mass of youma reaching for the senshi. It crash-landed with a crunch and sat inert. The Guardian cat landed spryly at Athalia's feet, looking upward at the man. "I'd recommend some version of that dome thingy you do," he suggested. "That bug was the equivalent of nuclear-powered, you know. I'd say it's going to go critical in about four seconds or so." Orias looked nothing short of ecstatic about that fact. "BIGGER FIRE IN THE HOLE!"

There was an appropriate time and place to allow for destructive creativity and when presented with overwhelming odds this was generally considered to be one of those 'appropriate' moments. Orias's joy at the fact he had been unleashed though really shouldn't have come at a surprise; yet as his eyes sparkled, Athalia did have to lift a brow.
The flurry of activity that occurred behind him was acknowledged at the very least, but with no window to look round to find out what the Mauvian might be doing. A single, solemn oath towards something or someone regarding sacrifice, and it wasn't long before the senshi was alerted to the fact that his order had been completed.
A brief glance round and he was greeted by a ball of rubbish.
Really, had he just strapped a bundle of wires together with duct tape and called it a day?
The senshi's brow rose higher but given Orias's confidence, he knew better than to underestimate him. When the additional advice came, he knew better than to question him as well. Granted he would most likely challenge the Mauvian about it later but in the four seconds he had to spare between detonation and now it was safe to assume that he did exactly as he was told, erecting the shield in front of himself and the Mauvian just in time for the fireworks.
Forced to look away by the sudden flash of light, he could only assume that the device had done its job.
A moment or two later and the one they had planted on the beam fell down, dislodged by the shockwave but still twitching with a little bit of life...

Orias cackled madly at the burning interior landscape was consumed in a blinding conflagration of hellfire, only held at bay by Athalia's magical barrier. "Look at it go Atty!" he squealed, his voice lost amongst the earth-shattering crash of rubble falling about them, not to mention the explosion itself. As the rumbling settled, the Mauvian peered downward at the transmitter feebly waving its legs in the air from the floor. "Little guy's a trooper," he murmured, picking it up in one paw and tugging his senshi's pantleg with another. "Here ya go. Reminds me of you. Too stubborn to give up, even in an explosion." Ever alert to more things he could experiment with, the cat was excited to see just a little bit of gooey youma essence by a burning support strut nearby. "Jackpot!" the Maine Coon shouted, scurrying over and producing another crystalline containment orb. Just as he moved away from his prize, crackling debris fell to the floor in the exact space his head had occupied. "Also I don't think this place was zoned for such spectacular explosions. Youma are splatted, but we're next if you don't man-mode our way out of here."

"Very few places in this city are 'zoned' for any type of destruction," the senshi pointed out. He afforded at least some time to admire the fact that the Mauvian hadn't been struck by anything so far. Cats certainly seemed to have nine lives but at the moment it didn't seem like it was necessary for this one to spend any of them. Things simply fell after the feline had been present and it was safe to say that if the senshi had tried to rely on that kind of luck it would have backfired in the most spectacular fashion.
He wouldn't even bother to ask what the youma 'goo' was for, preserved or otherwise. Given the senshi would have preferred to send it back to where it came from or destroy it permanently, he would have to settle for the Mauvian doing the right thing eventually. So long as it didn't blow anything else up near his home it would be all right in the end. Either that, or he would spend the better part of his actual working hours covering the damn cat's tracks!
"And being resilient in these scenarios is a valuable trait to have," the many pointed out as he finally began to follow after Orias. He ducked underneath some debris and quickened his pace as he heard several angry cracks above him. "Not that I would like to test that theory any more given my own abilities can be questionable in terms of reliability themselves," he admitted. That in mind he swept his arm downwards to collect the Mauvian and promptly made his way for the door.
Destruction of a building aside it would not be good for either of them to be found here. In this world Athalia was the city's enemy, the propaganda machine had ensured the narrative lived on, and if he were to be caught and captured then things would not go well for either of them. At least when they managed to get outside he'd be able to cover some serious ground.
He just had one request.
"All right," he took a breath and readied himself. "Hide my signature while we move and no one will even know we were here," he advised before leaping into the air.
Once they got home, he'd put the Mauvian to work creating a small army of those things. Now that he knew they worked he was going to take advantage of that. Eventually his existence wouldn't be coincidence, eventually he would there because he knew it was necessary. Soon those who deemed themselves hunters would become the hunted and he would thoroughly enjoy reminding them that they were not invincible.
