It had been a while since Mariposa had met Alexa that night after the festival and, needless to say, she'd had been very busy researching as many recipes as possible for them to try. The thing was, straight up searching the internet for "fairy cakes" didn't exactly provide many ideas into what sweets would lure fairies out of hiding as much as give her inspiration for a tea party themed bake sale. That wasn't a bad thing, no, but it wasn't going to help them on their mission. Other searches for "fairy bait" and "how to trap fairies" brought up articles written for parents trying to entertain their young children. Again, adorable and creative, but not useful to them in the slightest.
She decided to throw in the towel with specifics when she found herself on her seventh "fairy nail art" tutorial on Youtube and shoved herself out of her chair and to her cookbook collection. In hindsight, starting with this might have been the best idea, but she often liked to over-complicate everything she did and end up doing the easiest thing last. A terrible habit when you were someone who lived on a commission and blog based budget.
She flipped through the pages while her face did a series of emotional somersaults and snapped her attention back to her computer. Now if there was one thing she learned from all this research, it was that fairies not only liked sweet things, but also pretty and shiny things. Armed with this knowledge, what was the problem with just going with a simple vanilla base, some random frosting or jam, and then going ham on the decorations to make it look eye-catching and outrageous? It was full-proof, provided that they had enough ingredients to make several attempts! She set the book aside and lunged for her phone.
"Hey Alexa! ✨😸"She sent, her fingers tapping like lightning as she headed to her kitchen. "I think I've got just the right sweet idea that'll have those fairies zooming out right to us! 🍰🧁🧚🏾🧚🏾♂️👌🏾✨ Any way you can bring some extra supplies just in case of an epic fail? 🧿🙅🏿"
She balanced her phone with her chin while she searched her cabinets for her dry ingredients and re-checked how much she had left of her milk, eggs, and vanilla. Everything was pretty good, but it wouldn't hurt to have another carton, sack, or bottle. She went back to the chat.
"We'll definitely need extra eggs, flour, and vanilla! 🥚✌🏾✨ Oh, and if you see anything super cute or sparkly for decorations, too, that would be epic!" She added, before gasping and sending another text. "Can't believe I forgot to tell you! 🙇🏾♀️I'm on the fourth floor, apartment 417! Just come on up, and I'll order us some pizza so we've got something to gnaw on! 🍕🍕🍕 Any toppings you want?"stari_maga Hope this is good! Mariposa... Really likes emojis, LOL.

Alexa had fallen down the research rabbit hole hard that very first night. There was a lot to look through. Even if she kept the search strictly to Western European fairies and ignored any other spirits or creatures that could have kinda fallen into that category, there were dozens of stories to look through. It didn't take long until she found some stuff that hadn't made it into her kid's books. There was this one story about a girl who saved her boyfriend by holding onto him even though the fairy queen turned him into all kinds of nasty stuff. There was another one a fairy goddess who bit off a jerkface king's ear , which, through some loopholes meant he couldn't rule anymore. The fairies she was reading about seemed pretty hardcore. Hopefully some snacks would be enough to get on their good side. She never did quite get to figuring out what the fairies ate, though. Food came up pretty often, since bad fairies liked to mess with people's pantries, apparently, and there were lots and lots of warnings to never, ever eat the fairy food. It didn't say too much about what the food was, though, other than presumably very yummy looking since they needed all those warnings. A bunch of the fairy stories seemed to be set in Ireland, so she tried looking up Irish food, which seemed pretty normal except that apparently they ate their potato chips on sandwiches. That was the story of how Alexa ended up eating a potato chip sandwich at five in the morning. No fairies showed up. That was pretty much the end of her research journey, though. She had work the next day, and after that her brain was too mushy to focus on anything but dog videos, and the next day she ended up looking up dog stuff instead, and before she knew it it was a couple weeks later and she was getting a text from Mariposa. She grinned at her phone. "I. Love. Pizza." she texted back first, because that was the most important part. "Cheese or pepperoni is good." She spent the next few minutes pawing through her parent's cuboards. There weren't a ton of extra baking supplies, although she did pocket a bottle of vanilla before texting back, "Give me like an hour to get groceries and I'll be there! I'm excited! ❤️✨"True to her word, she showed up about an hour later with a bulging grocery bag and began to knock enthusiastically on door 417. She was grinning. There had been some stuff at the store that she was excited to show off. "Mariposa? It's me. Hi," she said.

Mariposa leaned over to read the text while she fussed with the various bowls, utensils, and measuring cups they'd need for the upcoming endeavor and nodded affirmatively. She'd get half-cheese, half-pepperoni, just because it was an even split, and order a couple of random liter sodas to drink with it. With that plan in mind, and with one hand still assembling supplies, Mariposa eagerly texted back.
"Half-and-half it is! 🙌🏾 🎉 I'll see you soon!"
An hour had given her more than enough time to set everything up how she thought it would be best. Her counters, though covered with a myriad of different baking utensils, was neatly organized by size, measurement, and type, and any worn off labels had been given temporary sticky-note replacements. Her two old trusty stand-mixers, one red, one blue, were stationed at the ready with their metal bowls and proper attachments, while the pans they'd need were already greased and ready to go. The only thing they'd have to do before they started measuring was preheat the oven, but that was currently running to keep the pizza warm ahead of Alexa's arrival. She figured they'd eat first and go over the recipe before they started. After all, who could bake on an empty stomach? She certainly couldn't.
Alexa's knock was met with a not-so-quiet squeak of delight that was followed, quickly, by hurried footsteps. It had been such a long time since she'd had a guest, and even though this wasn't really a "hanging out" kind of thing, she was pretty excited.
"Alexa!" She greeted, flashing a grin of her own. "Come on in! I've got the pizza in the oven ready to eat and all of our supplies lined up! Just follow me!"
She motioned the other girl inside and into the hall. Though Mariposa's apartment wasn't very large or fancy, it had a comfortable, homey feel to it. There was a small living room type area with a television off to the left as soon as you walked in, followed by a hallway that connected it to her bedroom, spare rooms, and bathroom. There were several things hung on the walls in the hallway, but not everything could be made out from where they stood. The kitchen was straight forward from the door where the fridge could be seen and the smell of pizza hung through the air.
"Feel free to kick your shoes off by the door if you want and make yourself at home!" She added. "Oh, and would you like a drink? I got sodas with our pizza, but I've got other stuff in the fridge!"stari_maga Listen, this may be the huge amount of Irish blood running through my veins talking here, but potato chips in sandwiches are hella good? I like mine with pickle flavored or salt and pepper chips. 8V

Alexa might've been imagining things, but she was pretty sure that she could smell pizza through the door. That was enough to get her bouncing up and down on her toes a little, but it wasn't until her new friend opened the door that she grinned. "Mariposa! Hi," she said with a little wave as she stepped into the apartment, her shoes coming off the second she got permission. "It smells so good. Even if this experiment doesn't work, you figured out how to summon me. It's pizza. And soda, that sounds awesome." She looked around wide-eyed as they made their way into the kitchen. It was cute, in a cozy kind of way, which made sense given who's house it was. Mari was cute in a warm kind of way, too. She was prepared, too. Alexa had to do a double take at all the baking supplies, and she focused the longest on the two whole mixers. She'd known she was coming into the house of a semi-professional, but that just kicked it up a whole other level. "Okay, I'm impressed," she said, looking back towards the other girl. "Here, wanna see what I got?" She dropped her shopping bag on the first available sliver of counter, and she she pulled out the eggs and flour first. "Here's what you asked for, and then-" with extra flare, she held up a plastic tube with something sparkly inside. "It's glitter you can eat! Oh, and these." It was a small tub of the fancy sprinkles, shaped like flowers and leaves. "The label says 'garden party' so I figured since they were in a garden?" There hadn't been any fairy shaped ones. Bouquet of Diamonds I was living in Ireland and got introduced to potato chip sandwiches! They're such a good snack.

Mariposa practically bobbed around the kitchen while she let Alexa settle in. She went to the fridge first and grabbed the bottles of soda she'd bought. There was a small variety consisting of your typical lemon-lime soda, a cola, and a bottle of her personal, Dr. Pepper. She'd let Alexa have first dibs on whichever she wanted, as well as have the first slice of pizza, and set the bottles down on her small, circular kitchen table. It was regretfully a bit messy, but if you moved a stack of paper or a stray muffin tray over to the side a little there'd be plenty of room to put a paper plate and solo cup. Then, she turned to grab an oven mit and take the pizza out of the oven. The smell of the pie burst out with the rush of heat and the blonde turned slowly to place it down on the counter behind her.
"Of course I do!" She chimed, her hands scurrying toward a drawer and scouring it for her pizza cutter. She set it down next to the tray with the pizza and turned to face Alexa just as she showed off the bottle of edible glitter.
Oh, Alexa may as well have shown her the key to a room filled with endless treasure. Her eyes practically gleamed.
"Ahhh! Edible glitter is a genius tier move!" She exclaimed, clasping her hands together in excitement. "With that we can make the frosting so shiny and sparkly that not even the most steely of fairies could resist it! You're a boss, Alexa!"
The sprinkles were also the most adorable things she'd ever seen. Little flowers? Edible glitter? Who wouldn't be tempted by that decorative tag team? She promptly turned her attention toward the stove where she'd left her sketchbook and the cookbook from earlier.
"Okay, so, combining the edible glitter genius with the sprinkles and my idea..." She muttered, pulling a pencil out from behind her ear and eagerly writing something down. "We should have those weaselly fairies practically begging for a bite of these cakes-But first!"
She motioned to the pizza and the bottles of soda she'd set out with a smile.
"You have first dibs on whatever you'd like! I can show you what I've got sketched here while we both chow down." She added. "It's never good to bake on an empty stomach. You'll end up eating most of the batter you make, trust me." stari_maga I've always wanted to visit Ireland. > 3> One day.

Alexa gave the tube of glitter a little shake, just to show off the full extent of its sparkliness, and wow, was it sparkly. It was so sparkly that she couldn't help just flipping it around in her hand for a couple seconds and staring, even as she heard the oven door click open and the glorious pizza smell got even stronger. "Yeah, that's what I thought. This stuff is like, mesmerizing," she said. The call of pizza could only be resisted for so long, though. Mariposa didn't have to tell her twice. Alexa did her best to put the sprinkles and glitter in as neat of a pile as she could with her other ingredients in between Mariposa's stuff. When she was satisfied it wasn't about to fall over, she skipped across the kitchen, grabbed a plate and the first piece of cheese pizza that she saw, and shoved it straight into her mouth. Then she winced, put the rest of the slice down quick, and started fanning her burned tongue. "Ow. Ow," she said, working on getting herself a soda. "Okay, maybe I should have waited, but in my defense it was delicious. Good job, Mari." After she poured herself a cup, she took a big gulp of cola, which seemed to go down much better, and she gave a satisfied little sigh. Leaving her pizza on the counter to cool for a second, she went over to peek at what the other girl was writing. "What's your idea?" she asked. "I bet it's something super cool. You seem good at this. And since I'm sure it's gonna be great-" she looked up with her best puppy dog eyes. "We do get to eat some of the batter, right? Since I bought ingredients and everything?" She had not gone grocery shopping just to not eat any sweets.

Mariposa had to stifle a laugh as Alexa rushed to grab her slice of pizza and immediately burned her tongue trying to bite into it. She meant no harm by it, truly, but Alexa was a woman truly after her own heart and just couldn't help it. However, now that her friend had taken her choice of the pie, it was Mariposa's turn to snag herself a slice. She shoved her sketchbook under her arm, loaded her plate with a pepperoni slice, and popped open the bottle of Dr. Pepper.
"Pfft, no trouble at all!" She said, pouring herself a drink. "I've been dying for a good pie like this for a while now, but never had the excuse. Plus, it's always so much better to share one with someone else. I'm glad you could make it on such short notice!"
She set her plate down somewhere stable, took a sip of her drink, and eagerly flipped through her sketchbook. She'd spent most of the time waiting for the pizza getting her idea to a stage that at least looked cohesive, but her sketches still looked a little rushed. Hopefully that wasn't an omen for how the final product would turn out. She flipped the sketchbook around and beamed.
"Okay, so I was thinking-" She began, tapping toward a sketch of a round layer cake she'd drawn that was surrounded by smaller cakes. The center cake was decorated with sketchy flowers and other details, while the smaller cakes with in varying shapes. "We could go with simple, sweet flavors, like vanilla and strawberry, maybe other berry flavors too, but go absolutely ham on the decorating. After all, presentation is very important when it comes to food, almost as important as taste. However, trying to go for something too complicated in terms of technique or flavor could completely mess us up before we even begin, so I thought one large cake and a few minis wouldn't be too much. We can always modify as we go!"
She snorted at Alexa's puppy eyes and covered her mouth to laugh.
"Of course! There's also no reason why we couldn't bake something for ourselves, too." She said, raising a finger to tap her chin. "That, and there could be some rejects we could keep and eat. No sense in wasting cake unless it's burned and inedible."

Alexa didn't mind the giggles. She laughed, too. It was kinda funny that she'd burned her tongue from getting too excited about pizza. It didn't stop her from taking another bite while Mariposa chose her food, although she did at least blow on it this time. Oh yeah. Now she could really appreciate that cheesy deliciousness. "Of course!" she said. "I only work part time so in the summer I've got plenty of time for shenanigans. I'm probably gonna be all swamped again once classes start, though." She pressed her lips together at that, but only for a second. Education was important. She didn't wanna work at the mall forever, and she was liking school a lot more now that she was taking more design classes and less math. Speaking of which, Alexa wasn't any stranger to messy concept sketches, and her eyes went as wide looking over the sketchbook as they would have looking at a full-on ten layer wedding cake. "Woah, this is great," she said. "Way better than anything I could have come up with, and little mini cakes? That's so smart. Like, a fairy buffet." She beamed."We're gonna explode their little sugar loving brains!" There was a slight pause. "But in a good way, obviously. Vanilla seem fairy-y, I brought some of that, too." Chocolate was probably Alexa's favorite, but it somehow seemed a little, like, heavy. She giggled again at the reassurance that they'd get to eat some cake, only looking a little bit like she was actually relieved. "Okay, so how do we start?" she glanced over at all the spoons and mixers lined up on the counter before she offered, "Mixing stuff?" Bouquet of Diamonds Okay but what are they gonna do when no fairies show up? Alexa may have been slightly exaggerating her cake eating abilities.

Mariposa beamed that her sketch and idea were well received. Admittedly, she was a little worried that Alexa would find the flavor part of the concept too simple and she'd have to come up with something else more fancy. There was only so much you could do with a cake before it became a cloying mess, though, so she was thankful that they wouldn't need to experiment too much. They'd still taste as they went along, just to be sure.
"You bet we are!" She agreed, laughing. Yeah, they didn't want to give the fairies any kind of brain aneurysm or other "explosive" damage, but metaphorically blowing their minds wouldn't be a bad thing at all. She looked to where Alexa had left the supplies she'd brought and nodded. "Good, we'll need plenty of it! I've always hated how it comes in such a small bottle, but it's so expensive? The only thing that's worse is actual vanilla bean. You might as well be rich if you can use that in your cakes regularly."
She placed her sketchbook down and moved to take a bite of her pizza. Ah, just the right temperature! It almost made her want to try her hand at making her own pizza from scratch one day. She supposed that was the power of a good slice of pizza.
"We start-" She said, swallowing as she placed her plate down again. "By preheating the oven, then measuring out and combining all of our dry ingredients. Then we combine all of our wet ingredients in a separate bowl before using the stand mixers to mix them together."
She turned her attention back to her sketch book and wandered over to the oven. Keeping the pizza warm was also a great way to make sure the oven was primed and ready to heat up for the cakes. She set the oven to 350°F and flipped the page over.
"Okay, it says here that we need three and two-third cups cake flour, one teaspoon salt, one teaspoon baking powder, and three-fourths of a teaspoon of baking soda." She read, turning to look over at where she'd left all her ingredients and measuring tools. "See if you can't find the measurements we need from the pile over there. I'm sorry it's so disorganized, I kinda just... Dug through all my drawers and grabbed whatever I could find."stari_maga Try to take it back to the Negaverse and offer it to anyone who wants a slice? IDK if that would work, but they could just... Split the cake between themselves and box it for another day? 8V BTW, I found this recipe for vanilla cake here and it's pretty much what they're making, but with a ton of glitter and decorations of course, LOL.

As they chatted, Alexa reached in a pulled the last thing out of her bag- the vanilla. Although, she didn't look quite as proud of this one. In fact, her face fell as Mari mentioned vanilla beans and she looked over the label again. "Crap, this is imitation," she said. "Not vanilla bean at all. Do you think they're gonna notice?" She sucked in her cheeks. If these fairies were as finicky as they seemed, having gone back into hiding and everything, they would have to notice if the vanilla was less than perfect. It wasn't like she could do much about it, though. The last of this week's spending money had gone towards the flour. She'd gotten name brand for that, at least, and large eggs instead of medium. The measuring had to go on, though, so after another quick bite of pizza, Alexa made her way over to look through the cups and spoons. "Those are some weirdly specific measurements, but okay," she said. "This isn't too bad, though. You should see my room." The ring of measuring spoons wasn't too hard to find, and she slipped off the ones they needed. "Actually, I'd probably clean if you came over, but right now? Imagine a tornado." She found the two-thirds cup, too, and headed back to hand them over. "Okay, what's with baking powder and baking soda, though?" she asked. "I get that they're different things, so shouldn't they have, like, actually different names?" It seemed like that would save a bunch of people a bunch of confusion.
