Quote: HP: 8 STR - 16 (+3) DEX - 14 (+2) CON - 15 (+2) AC: 12 Hit lands for 2 It was early. The sun had barely risen, and there was still a chill to the Barrens as the land slowly awoke. This was Ragnar's favorite time of day, with light just spilling over the horizon, the sun still too low to bake them with its ferocious heat. It was still cool enough to do things, which was precisely why he had called on Torsten for an early morning spar. While waiting for the armor they had commissioned from Dyna, the Warband was mostly grounded in the Barrens. It was not the worst thing. It had given Ragnar more time to train up some of their young warriors, better prepare them for the journey ahead. An added bonus was also the ability to listen in on the conversations flitting through Homewood. The news coming out was that something grim had happened, but he was still trying to get a handle on what exactly had gone down. Right now, though, that was far from his mind. The striped buck shook his head, loosened his neck and shoulders and he and Torsten walked circling each other in warm up. There was really no better way to prepare for the day, and Ragnar felt it had been too long since his last fight. Sparring was imperative for staying in fighting shape in the stretches between raids. "It has been a while since we've done this, hasn't it?" Ragnar asked, eyeing his friend with a gleam in his eye. Long moments ticked by. They took their time warming up, neither willing to risk injury over a moment of misguided impatience. When at last they both felt loose and ready, Ragnar saw Torsten give him an almost imperceptible nod. And it was on. The striped buck didn't hesitate. He didn't wait, He simply leaped forward, head lowered.

Quote: HP: 6/8 STR - 12 (+1) DEX - 10 (+0) CON - 16 (+3) AC: 13 Uh oh. He missed Torsten wasn't a creature of many words to begin with, but on a fine morning, in the face of a fight, he was even more succinct than usual. He walked side by side with Ragnar to their chosen spot, saying nothing, although his demeanor was relaxed. He carried himself with fluid steps, almost like a coiled catbeast, gliding through the motions of walking. Ragnar was a formidable foe. One didn't rise to the position of leadership without having skills, and of all the fighters in the band, he was undoubtedly one of the most highly respected. Still, Torsten had known Ragnar all his life. A casual sparring session wasn't enough to intimidate him. The lilac buck grunted and gave Ragnar a quick nod, focusing mostly on himself, on the way his muscles felt as he warmed them up. Win, lose, or draw, the outcome didn't matter terribly to him as long as he put in a good effort and wielded his own talents in a manner that felt satisfactory. And then, their fight began. Ragnar was quick. The striped buck sprang at him, and Torsten just barely managed to catch that horn attack with his own. He moved to deflect and push the other back, but Ragnar jabbed himself forward and slammed his skull into Torsten's. The lilac buck grunted again and reeled back, shaking the stars out of his eyes. It wasn't as easy as he thought it would be. He charged forward, struggling momentarily with his depth perception. The horn meant to jab into Ragnar's shoulder bounced off as Ragnar moved out of the way.

Quote: HP: 8 STR - 16 (+3) DEX - 14 (+2) CON - 15 (+2) AC: 12 Miss! That headshot had clearly knocked Torsten off-balance, but Ragnar would be lying if he tried to pretend that he had escaped totally unscathed too. His head smarted a bit, and he just barely managed to sidestep his friend's attack. Torsten rushed by without landing a solid hit, and Ragnar felt a rush. These early attempts set the tone for the rest of the fight. He eagerly lunged after Torsten, but whether it was hubris or that mild headache playing tricks on him, he found himself projecting his attack far too early. Torsten saw him coming. The lilac buck whipped around as Ragnar went to kick out with his hind legs, and Ragnar felt himself stumble as Torsten bodily shoved his hindquarters off balance with his shoulder. "Nice move," Ragnar managed to say, swinging back around to face him.

Quote: HP: 6/8 STR - 12 (+1) DEX - 10 (+0) CON - 16 (+3) AC: 13 Hits for 2 Compound Eye = +1 to Str for the next two attacks Torsten managed a grin, eyeing Ragnar carefully as me allowed himself a guttural, "Hm." He didn't want any distractions after that well-timed counter move. He was looking for an opening, and found it as Ragnar spun around, exposing a small weak spot. The window of opportunity was small, but Torsten anticipated it coming, and by the time Ragnar was spinning, he had already swung his rump around and lashed out. His hooves connected with Ragnar's flank, and Torsten was satisfied when he heard the whoosh of his opponent's forced exhalation. Before Ragnar had a chance to recover, he drew upon his magic and activated Compound Eye. His eyes changed shape, and his field of vision expanded. Useful.

Quote: HP: 6/8 STR - 16 (+3) DEX - 14 (+2) CON - 15 (+2) AC: 12 Ragnar will use Well. He hits for 3 That kick stung. Through sheer force of will, Ragnar kept himself from stumbling, but he would have to move fast if he didn't want Torsten to take advantage of his temporary drop in defenses. The striped buck reached immediately for his magic, drawing on gift that thrummed within him at all times. He drew on Well, and a deep cone of water began to rise under Torsten's feet. Ragnar smiled to himself as his opponent began to thrash, trying to escape the water, and he dashed forward, plowing sidelong into Torsten and knocking the buck off balance.

Quote: HP: 3/8 STR - 12 (+1) DEX - 10 (+0) CON - 16 (+3) AC: 13 Compound Eye = +1 to Str for the next two attacks 1/2 OOF. Torsten felt Ragnar charge into him, absorbing the brunt of the attack with his ribs. By the Grandfather! There were certainly advantages to being an adept. The lilac buck felt his panic at possibly being drowned in a magically summoned vat of water slowly subside. He had to stay on the offensive, even if Ragnar had the lead. He set his feet and reared, boxing out at Ragnar with renewed ferocity, unwilling to let his opponent get too far away. His hooves landed, and he felt a satisfactory thump as he whacked the other buck in the shoulder.

Quote: HP: 4/8 STR - 16 (+3) DEX - 14 (+2) CON - 15 (+2) AC: 12 Using Spillway Torsten's kicks landed, and with shoulder smarting, Ragnar danced away, deciding to disengage to buy himself a moment to think. The water he'd summoned had started to seep into the land, but not fast enough. Once again, he drew on his abilities and used spillway to evaporate some of the water - just enough to leave a muddy mess under Torsten's feet. The lilac buck began to slip, losing his footing as the water became a slippery mess. This was it. Ragnar darted forward and plowed into him again.

Quote: HP: 1/8 STR - 12 (+1) DEX - 10 (+0) CON - 16 (+3) AC: 13 Compound Eye = +1 to Str for the next two attacks 2/2 Well. That was dirty, Torsten thought as he felt his feet slide out from under him. But he thought it with an air of appreciation. It was hard not to admire the creativity with which these abilities could be used, and a reminder to never take his opponent for granted. Torsten had just enough time to think these two things before he felt Ragnar lurch into him once again. These heavy blows were starting to take their toll, and Torsten knew it was becoming obvious in the way his breathing had become more labored. It wasn't in either of them to simply give up, though. They'd fight until some level of exhaustion hit them, and both bucks seemed perfectly happy with that knowledge. Torsten flailed for a second before he found his foot. When he did, he planted his hooves once against and shoved right back, slamming his horn against Ragnar's side as they struggled for the upper hand.

Quote: HP: 2/8 STR - 16 (+3) DEX - 14 (+2) CON - 15 (+2) AC: 12 ............. Me, completely forgetting to use Ragnar's Fighter's Claw .............. And him proving that he was better off without it??? Torsten managed to recover quicker that Ragnar had expected. In moments like these, he felt a renewed sense of admiration for his friend's grit. Ragnar shoved back, straining against Torsten. Then he stopped, quite suddenly, skipping backward and disengaging from the struggle in an effort to throw Torsten off balance and create an opening for an attack. It didn't quite work. Perhaps the lilac buck knew Ragnar too well at this point. All the sudden disengagement managed to do was... simply take Ragnar farther away. Torsten didn't stumble or trip as he'd hoped, and when Ragnar dove back in for an attack, his opponent deflected his horn with ease. He could've sworn he saw a small smile on Torsten's face in that moment.

Quote: HP: 1/8 STR - 12 (+1) DEX - 10 (+0) CON - 16 (+3) AC: 13 Torsten had thought it was over. Both of them were winded at this point, neither of their blows landing with as much power. And when he'd managed to push Ragnar's attack away, that had seemed like the perfect opportunity to end it. Torsten pushed his way forward triumphantly, rear up to land a shot on Ragnar's chest or neck, whichever was nearest. His arrogance was ill-timed, though, and he watched almost in slow motion as his opponent managed to dodge his attack with just a hair's width to spare. Torsten's hooves hit nothing and he landed heavily, stunned.

Quote: HP: 2/8 STR - 16 (+3) DEX - 14 (+2) CON - 15 (+2) AC: 12 BLESSED BY RUNE. Ragnar, you lucky duck The idea that he was about to lose had never crossed Ragnar's mind. He had only thought of how close he had come, how tired Torsten was as well, how easily he might slip up. His opportunity came not a second later, as he flung himself back just barely enough to send his opponent flying by. Before Torsten would have a chance to react, Ragnar ran at him and shoved his chest into Torsten's side, moving with such force that he bowled his opponent clear off his feet. It was done. Ragnar stood above the fallen Torsten, taking in quick breaths, working to regulate his breathing once again. "That was a spectacular effort, my friend. You almost had me there."

From his spot on the ground, Torsten let out a low grumble. "True," he said, then grunted as he rolled himself back onto his feet and picked himself up. That last hit might bruise a bit. But he felt wonderfully refreshed and ready to face the day.
