Skeena woke to the curious tottling of crab life around her. It was not the first time she had awoken on the beach but this time sand and salt filled her mouth, her lips were cracked and she had the distinct feeling that something was definitely wrong but she had no memory of the past few days, and no knowledge of where she was. She sat up, sore and bruised and confused.
"Hello? Anybody? Help!" She didn't know what she needed help with but she was definitely distressed. Water would be good. Just not being alone.

Masika had been on her way to the shore, being home in Matori after so long away had made her crave the sound of the waves. What she got was the sound of someone calling for help. She blinked a few times before she reached down and picked up her skirts so that she could run a bit easier. If she wasn't mistaken that was the sound a little one screaming. When Skeena came into view Masika's heart clenched tightly. The little girl looked like she'd seen better days. She was a mess and clearly lacking food or water from the looks of it. The hybrid slowed her pace so as to not scare the little girl, her expression softening as well. "Are you alright little one? What's the matter?" She called out, hoping to learn what the issue was.

Skeena's voice broke over her words, "I - I don't know, I don't remember, but I think something very bad happened. I don't know where I am or where my parents are, I know I have parents but they are not here, neither are my brothers, nothing looks familiar." She started to bawl in earnest. She was usually a stoic child, but loosing her memories and waking up to a strange beach was more that she could handle. At least she wasn't alone and this woman looked like an alk hybrid, which meant she was like her mom. Skeena crawled forward and clung to the woman's leg as she added yet more salt water to this forsaken beach. Great gasping, ragged sobs wracked her small body and it wouldn't be long before she ran out of all energy.

Hearing that the child didn't remember made her frown. The poor thing was out on the beach all alone with no one around and she was lost. As the little girl grabbed for her leg to cling and cry Masika moved so that she could kneel down and remove Skeena's grip. She wasn't trying to leave the child there but simply didn't want her to cling like that. The little girl needed a proper hug. So the hybrid sat in the sand, not caring that her dress would get dirty and gathered the child into her lap. "Shhh, its alright little one." She did her best to soothe her worries. The shawl that she often had on was moved around so that it could wrap around Skeena and give her comfort. Masika let the child cry as she gently rocked her, keeping her safe and close in the mean time.

Skeena's little heart spasmed for a moment when the woman removed her hold but it was just to give her a proper hug. Skeena burrowed as far as she could go, the woman's solid body giving her some sort of support and solace. The shawl that was wrapped around her smelled light and floral, comforting and very feminine. Skeena sensed she was in good hands. "I am hungry and thirsty and tired and terrified." She stuttered out between gasps. At least for now she was safe, she had a protector, how long would it last?

She paused in her rocking to think about what the little girl had said. Masika took a second to form responses before she started to rock again. "It's okay to feel those things but I am here and I won't let anything bad happen to you." One hand moved away from the little one she held to the folds of her dress. From a pocket she pulled out a small water skin and brought it over so that the girl could see it. "I have some water here. We can get you some food. And if you want to sleep then go ahead, I'll hold you while you do so you feel safe." She could remember when she was scared of a nightmare her mother had done the same for her. Masika had always felt safest when her mother held her while she slept.

Skeena was a tough girl, she had the blood of warrior royalty ( not real royalty ) but waking up without most of her recent memory on a beach alone and sick feeling was the worst thing that had ever happened to her. Her parents had always taken such good care, her brow furrowed. She shook her head and tried not to think about it. This lady that looked like Mom was the best thing that could possibly have happened to her at least she wasn't alone. "That sounds good, all of it." She was so tired and hungry and the water tasted so good.

Masika made sure to let the girl get enough to drink but was watchful to make sure she didn't choke in her need to quench her thirst. Once that was done she smiled and put the water skin away. "Alright little one, my name is Masika, can you tell me yours?" Maybe if she had a name she could figure out who the girl's parents were? She looked around the beach and still saw no one. It worried her a little. Pulling the girl closer she moved so that she could stand up with her. While Masika wasn't strong she had enough strength to carry a child around. "Lets get you some food and then we can see about sleep alright?"

Skeena was a little ashamed to admit that she passed out as Masika was carrying her. Her body and mind had had enough of the abuse and she blacked out for a while. When she awoke she was still groggy but not nearly as paniced. At least there was someone to take care of her, for right now, she needed a lot of care and attention.

With the little one passing out before giving her name Masika smiled at her. "Alright then, for now I'll call you Shui. It means 'she who cam from the sea.' I hope that's alright." With nothing else to call the child other that 'hey girl' she felt something more personal was needed. When she made it back to a grazing Edaj, her janarim, she briefly thought about letting the little girl ride on the back of the beast but felt that holding her was best. She didn't want Skeena to wake up on a strange creature after falling asleep while being held. So instead she simply readjusted her hold and carried the little girl to the house she shared with her mother, Dem. "I don't have anything your size right off the bat but I can make something. Lucky for you, Shui, I have plenty of fabric."

Skeena woke to strange walls, different somehow than she was expecting. Where was she? It all came floating back to her as if from a dream. That she had awoken without much memory. That there was a blue lady that looked faintly like her mother but wasn't but was so very kind. She hoped that was where she was, with the blue lady. She crept out of the room feeling awfully cozy in softish clothes that made her want to go back to bed and cuddle her blanket. She hunted for water and finding it took a long drink.

Skeena wouldn't need to look far for Masika. She was sitting just outside the room and working on making another set of clothes for the girl to wear. When it was noted that the child was awake Masika smiled at her. "Did you sleep well little Shui?" She kept her same gentle tone that seemed to be her default. "I'm sorry I wasn't holding you when you woke up. I wanted to make a few things for you to wear." She held up the sewing she was doing currently. As for food, there was a small bowl sitting by the bedroom door that had fruits and dried meats in it and beside that a small pitcher with cool water. "I wasn't sure what you liked so I thought I'd wait to ask before I cooked anything." Her free hand pointed to the food. "But I have this for right now."

Skeena blinked...Shui..well it was cute she might as well keep it as a nickname. "Oh, I uh, its okay, the fruit and dried meat looks good." She smiled. Her first since the whole debacle. It felt strange but good. She might as well make the best of her situation here. "I can't thank you enough, I would be crab.." she swallowed, "Food, if it wasn't for you." "Oh, I love the colors in the fabric," she couldn't bring herself to be loud yet, but it was genuine appreciation in her voice. Masika was an absolute sweetheart. "Thank you." Her own clothes had been badly tattered she vaguely remembered. Wearing new clothes would be strange but Mom always said that part of feeling good was looking good. At least she hadn't forgotten that.

"It's alright sweetheart, I'll take care of you until we figure out where your parents are." Masika couldn't let the little girl be left on her own and she was sure V'demhe would agree with her so she wasn't worried about the girl being kicked out of the house. "For now you can stay here with me. My mother stops by from time to time as well." As Skeena said she loved the colors and thanked her she smiled, pausing mid-stitch. "Of course little Shui. I'll take care of you." Masika wanted to give the child the best she could to make up for the bad that had happened to her.

She latched onto that bit of information. "Tell me about your Mother." Surely more information would be for the better. Skeena had the odd sensation of being both spoiled and deprived. She missed her Dad, she missed her brothers but most of all she missed her mother, a great force that would make the world bow to her if she could. "She won't forget me right? My mother?" Her voice trembled.
