Obviously this is not always the truth- Holly is used to concealing her true emotions beneath a flippant, happy go lucky demeanor, because she feels her more negative thoughts and feelings will be dismissed or mocked, even by her close friends and family. Her bubbly demeanor is a way to cope with some very real insecurities.

xxx»» Holly is a very humorous and good-natured person who likes to laugh and rarely takes things seriously. She's not easily offended or provoked and is inclined to make light of things, even when she is secretly hurt. She often feels that showing a more serious reaction would be a sign of weakness, so she's used to laughing things off or poking fun at herself when she makes a mistake. - CHILDHOOD
xxx»» Holly was born in Dublin, Ireland to her parents, Jack and Ruby Madigan. She has one older brother, Charlie, who is three years her elder. Her father Jack was a wizard who'd worked a series of odd jobs throughout her childhood, often claiming he was going to become a famous author. Somehow, he never seemed to make much progress on that, and often blamed his wife and children for 'holding him back' from fame and success. Her mother Ruby was a muggle who'd been swept off her feet by Jack shortly after he'd graduated from Hogwarts and she from secondary school. Instead of going on to university as she'd planned, she got pregnant, had Charlie, and married Jack instead, working at a daycare for most of her children's childhood. The marriage was incredibly unhappy and Holly grew up hearing her father shout at, berate, and otherwise demean her increasingly beaten-down and timid mother.
Ruby considered divorcing him and leaving with the children several times, but Jack always convinced her that the magical legal system would give him full custody of Charlie and Holly, and she would never see them again. He also tended to drastically improve his behavior for a few months at a time, before reverting back to his selfish and abusive self. While there was never any physical violence, Holly knew her mother was terrified of her father's ability to tear her down with his words and to gaslight her into catering to his every need. The household's dysfunction caused Charlie to regularly misbehave and get into trouble at their muggle primary school, and transitioning to Hogwarts did not help matters. There were multiple owls home raising concerns about his wild and unruly behavior, which her parents either shouted at him over or just ignored outright. While Holly had displayed signs of magic at a young age and always knew she was a witch, she felt that she had only one shot to secure her reputation at Hogwarts as more than 'that troublemaker Charlie Madigan's little sister'.
SCHOOL YEARS
- FIRST YEAR »» During her first year Holly was sorted into Hufflepuff, to her relief, rather than to Ravenclaw like her brother. While she did not immediately develop a close-knit group of friends, as she'd hoped, she did enjoy the experience of being away from home and gained an interest in Quidditch.
