Vague calls about strange people in strange places was just par for the course; Jeremy couldn't keep track of how many times he'd been called somewhere to chase away rebellious teenagers or squatters, or who knew what. Usually, this wasn't a problem. Usually, all he did was tell some people to scram. Sometimes he could give them a ride to a homeless shelter. Sometimes they were too drunk to function and needed a ride home. Sometimes they were committing petty theft and he actually needed to be there.
Tonight, he wasn't sure what he'd find.
It was a non emergency call so he didn't think he was going into anything too troublesome. The GPS and systems in his car had been acting up so it had taken a little longer to get here. The station had been trying to get the systems fixed but this had been going on for three days already and it was driving him crazy. The lack of service out here wasn't surprising given all the concrete and metal; he wasn't getting a clear radio signal or signal on his cell phone.
Uncommon, but not really worth stressing out over.
He had pulled the car over, a bit away--if only to prevent another nail in the tire in the timespan of a month. At first, he didn't see movement, but he figured he could stick his head in, peek around. If someone had been here and had moved on it was just easy work for him.
The first two minutes were unimpressive; the streetlights and overhead lights in the area made it easy enough to see. When you were looking for shadows, you found them. Every now and then he'd catch something out of the corner of his eye. In Destiny City, it might not have been your eyes playing tricks, and he didn't know what he was going into. Feral animals were as likely as monsters. Especially out here.
Voices, though.
The voices were hard to brush off as just wildlife running amok.
He paused when he heard the echo of voices and crept as close to the shadows as he could as he sought them out. It was easy; the construction site had made massive strides in erecting the building. He didn't know what it was supposed to be, only that the last time he'd been in the area it was a foundation, and now it looked like a proper concrete monstrosity. It would be a parking garage eventually, but they still had a ways to go.
He moved a little closer, trying to make out the words--a male and female, he supposed, and he heard a bit of scuffling. He didn't need the flashlight in here; the artificial light of the streetlights outside cast enough light within that he could make out what he needed. To err on the side of caution, he rested his hand on his gun but didn't remove it from the holster.
When he was nearby enough to clearly make out the voices, he peeked his head around the corner and tried to assess what he was walking in on.

It was getting bad. Tina had, at the start, been curious and willing, and he had be happy and hopeful for a new partner to take on patrols. It offered him a sense of protection and comradery. She had taken to fighting easily and did not pull away to actions that might make others flinch or question their humanity. She did what many other Negaverse agents could not - kill and remove starseeds. She seemed to do this without any affect to her own mentality and always seemed eager and willing the next day to go out again. He appreciated a person like that in their ranks, and was happy to chat with her as they worked together to continue to add more starseed coals to the Negaverse fire to burn ever brighter.
But there was a line.
Tina was eating. At first he thought that her inexperience had made her tired and in turn she wanted to replenish herself or hide away any combat damage from her family but taking a starseed that would speed up the healing. It took longer to heal when you weren't a general after all. Faster than a normal person, but it wasn't as quick as a starseed. But then he noticed EVERY time they fought, the energy collecting always turned to starseed collecting and he had to make sure they did not double back onto the same parts of the city else risk police patrol that would no doubt increase if they went to the same areas. And she always wanted to eat.
Today was too far. She had her eyes on every starseed and he refused to give them up. None of the starseeds had to be hers right now. They had gotten good working together that they had taken the starseeds without injury and quickly. There was NO reason for her to eat. And yet, here they were.
"I told you, you are NOT eating today. You are wasting them!" He growled at her, holding up the starseeds in his paws high above which - was hard considering how short he still was.
"I SAID STOP!" He shouted at her as she moved on him, not wanting to have to fight her but prepared for it.

Tinaksite liked eating starseeds. She still couldn’t fathom why Wolframite kept chastising her when she would eat them and scoffed, frowning deeply when he wrenched them from out of her hands just when she was about to put one of the fragile gems into her mouth.
“I do not care what you say! I want to eat one, and I do not understand why you are getting upset, Wolf? You are the one who showed me how to take them! How to eat them! Told me to try it, you wanted me to eat them!”
Her face was set in a scowl and she had absolutely no idea that there was someone else nearby, the only things her golden eyes could focus on was the small, winking gems that were being held up in the other Captain’s paw.
“You are not above me, Wolf. I am your equal, and if I want to eat a starseed, I will! You can not stop me. I will tell Laven that you were bullying me.”
Her flail was in her hand before she really had any moment to think about it, her mind thinking about nothing but the hunger that was trying to utterly overtake her, and she swung the weapon at the elbow that held the precious items up, jumping to grab as many as she could.
One of the starseeds fell from her fingers and tumbled towards the ground.
Giving a small cry, Tinaksite tried to catch it, but simply ended up hitting it towards the stranger that she still hadn’t noticed.

Jeremy had seen things in Destiny City. Things that he could usually play off as working too hard or too late, eating too poorly.
Wolframite was something new to him; he had never seen someone that looked like that. The odd uniforms, those he understood. But the animalistic features? Not so much his realm of expertise.
His heart seized when the starseed fell to the ground and made its way to him; he knew next to nothing about these things, except that they were supposed to be something like the physical embodiment of your soul.
And the girl was eating them.
The safety was off on his gun and he crouched, scooping up the starseed and holding it firmly in one hand as he trained his gun on the two before him. He didn't know if the girl had seen him, but he had been close enough to see the color of her eyes at some point so he found it hard to believe that he would go unnoticed.
The worst part of all of it was that he still had a job to do.
The construction in the area, while leaning towards being finished, still left a lot to be desired; he had to watch his step to make sure he didn't trip or tumble. There were enough curves and divots and uneven ground that he didn't want to make any unnecessary moves.
"Stop fighting," he commanded loudly, in a voice that echoed across the concrete. "You two are trespassing. I'm going to need you to leave the area immediately. And leave whatever you've stolen."
He wasn't stupid enough to think that he could arrest them; people like them didn't play by the rules, no matter what side they were fighting on. Their outfits looked different than his brother's, so he could only assume this was the bad sort that he was supposed to avoid.
...But he couldn't do his job if he was running away, so he kept his gun trained on them. They weren't normal. He knew that. He didn't know if bullets worked on them, and he didn't really want to find out, but a gun was scary and he could only hope that they had wits enough to comply.
"I don't want to hurt you, so let's just make this easy and be on our way. You go tend to your business elsewhere and I won't haul you into the station and charge you with anything."
...Even though, he was pretty sure, if she was eating those starseeds that meant someone out there wasn't ever going to wake up again. There wasn't really a crime to charge for soul eating, though.
He wanted to look at it, at the little gemstone in his hand. The little piece of someone that gave them their spark of life. Being told about it was one thing--seeing it? Holding it? He still couldn't quite wrap his head around it.

"I showed you to help save you during life and death situations! Not to become some addict! You are going to f*** up your starseed! I don't -" But she was already moving, racing to the fallen starseed as if it was a dime bag, and he growled in his throat at her persistence to ruin her own body.
He hated himself for showing her, but reminded himself that many officers were trained and expected to eat a starseed to save themselves. Tina was just one of the ones who was doing the reverse. He had seen it before. Back when he was still very young. Had a fight with a officer who kept eating them - it was hard to place the name but he remembered their face. The fight.
Rushing forward, he went to fight her again, throwing his arms about her, trying to grip her into a hold to keep her still, but as he did, he heard a voice call out.
It was commanding - but wavering. His glowing eyes darted to the sound, and there in uniform was a officer. His heart picked up a beat at the gun trained on them, but the admittance he didn't want to shoot proved this one wasn't trigger happy. Maybe scared or unsure, which meant a twitch could send out a shot.
Ears back, he listened, slowly releasing Tina so she could become an partner in getting out of this other than a hindrance. His eyes flickered to the starseed in his hand, and decided maybe this was about to get a lot worse. If Tina let her hunger overtake her reason, then he had to keep her from getting in point-blank range.
"We're not here to hurt you, but you are a bit out of your scope here, Officer. That thing you're holding is going to get you attacked. We'll go on our way, but you should give us that back."
"I don't want to hurt you too." Though the tone was a low growl, his posture changing a little to get a better footing as he took a claw to slowly lick them.
They had fought today to get those starseeds. His short teleports were used up. Was he in range to rush in? A moving target was hard to shoot but he wasn't that far away.
"It's going to be very hard for you to cuff me. Let's be clear." He glanced at his own, large wrists with a smile. "You're outnumbered. Be smart here and toss what's in your hand and we'll go. Right?"

The sound that Tinaksite made while Wolframite held her was almost less than human, a growl that was half a snarl, and she continued striking at him with her flail until it finally registered that there was another voice in the mix. She stiffened and looked over, her pupils dilated with anger and a wild desperation.
She wanted that starseed.
To Hell with Wolf, she wanted to eat it, and she would eat it. He couldn’t stop her, and this stupid…cop could either.
“Give it back.” She snarled, shaking her head, her sherbet colored hair falling in front of her eyes, more messy than it normally was. “You are in rough waters, and I will not hesitate to take your starseed as well. I am hungry, and neither you, nor wolf will stop me.”
Tinaksite launched herself at the officer, holding her flail at the ready. Her mind felt utterly blank, the very need to consume taking over every sort of rational thought.

Instinct kicked in and Jeremy sidestepped Tinaksite just enough to avoid impact. Just because he didn't want to shoot didn't mean he wasn't going to--paperwork be damned.
He let out a single shot that ricocheted off the concrete in the distance. He didn't know where the round ended up, only that it was loud enough that he was certain they'd understand what they were against.
"I'm not ******** around," he said coldly. His heart was pounding and adrenaline was coursing through him. He was outnumbered. Maybe outmatched; he wasn't sure if they were bulletproof and he didn't want to find out. "Get out of here, now, before there's a casualty."
The man seemed like he was reasonable enough to talk to. The woman?
She had a look in her eye that made his stomach churn, and she'd already moved once.
She was fast--faster than he could probably keep up with.
Maybe not faster than a bullet, though.

This was a mess. Tina was going to go for a starseed without paying attention to killing the officer FIRST. With the gun, he was better armed then they were. With the gun. he was a threat and now he was afraid. There was no time for him to take this calmly. If Tina was with her usual wits, then he could try smoothing over the nerves of the officer but with Tina making threats and not listening to him, he had milliseconds to react. If he hadn't already killed tonight and used his short jumps, it would so much easier now, but the distance was the obstacle between him and the cop.
At this rate, Tina would dive blindly and leave him with a corpse. As much as he was devoted to the Queen and Laven, Tina was now part of his pack, and her well-being despite her complete addictive stubbornness was still on him. The officer needed to get OUT of the picture.
The warning shot made him jump, and he couldn't recall ever hearing gunfire before. it was sharp to his ears and made them ring, but made the world after it sounded feel all the more silent in comparison. Silent. They were out here on their own. The officer had no backup. It was just him and the other. He just needed to get the gun.
Baring his own teeth, he dove forward, hurling himself past Tina, claws out, towards the officer to knock the gun free. Tina could destroy him after the gun was out of the equation or he would follow through once she scurried for her treat.
"To late!" He barked, golden eyes ablaze as he lunged full force at the other.

Six bullets. One warning shot left five.
It only took one to make an impact--against a human.
Jeremy didn't have time to try and figure out what he was, or how he could fight him--he had a gun with five bullets and he didn't have any other option except to use them. He'd trained for this. He liked his gun. In a calm situation, he was pretty accurate. In a stressful one? Maybe even better.
He'd just never had to face anything like Wolframite before.
There was no time for words, no time to to run, to deescalate.
There was time to fire three shots at Wolframite and hope for the best.
He clutched the starseed to his chest, as if thin fingers were any real protection against the claws and force of the man charging at him. He held his gun steady but backed up, nearly stumbling over the uneven concrete discarded on the ground. There wasn't a clear exit--he'd never make it to his car. Backup was unlikely.
He didn't have many resources, so he needed to make everything count.

The sound of the first shot broke through Tina’s rage, and the movement of Wolframite, the glowing eyes and the soft fur…it was in her vision and she didn’t quite understand…and when the other three shots rang out, she felt herself stumble backwards, but there was no pain, she wasn’t hurt at all.
That was good.
What a lazy cop! He couldn’t fire a gun right at all!
Her eyes flickered to the redhead and she gave a low growl, her eyes again going to the starseed in his hand before she remembered Wolframite once again.
Sanity half returned and she looked to her half youma friend and partner, a small frown creasing her face. “…Wolf? You are okay?”
Of course he was okay. He was faster than she was…and there was no way the stupid, useless cop would ever hit either of them with something as mundane as bullets.
Why was he on the ground? That...didn't seem right, somehow.

He felt the force of it. A hard jab into him and he dropped. Momentum carried him only so far but point blank range had a force to counter it. He dropped short and felt the shearing pain across his body. He expected battle to be the way to take him, but this somehow lacked all the viseral hatred and bloodlust he had imaged his time would end.
It was cheap, and he gritted his teeth, tasting metal in his mouth. Like hell he would let a cop take him. There were more people far more deserving than that.
Justice never was right or fair, was it? He wanted things to go one way but life always had a way of smacking him down and laughing at his ideals. His perceptions. He imagined wants.
Knelt, he was curled in, forhead touching the gravel as one clawed hand shook, set on the ground to anchor him as much upright despite his body ticking down to loose that battle. The glow of his eyes seemed to flicker, dulling, as he looked down at the hand at his chest, black blood spilling in deep pools over it, saturating the fur and spilling onto the construction gravel under him. <********..." He managed, swaying, before falling to the side.
His mind flickered, but he knew he had to teleport. Somehow, he had to summon energy.
He needed a starseed.
A hand clawed out into the abyss of his blurring vision to his own space pocket and from there, he pulled one of his own. One he saved. The whole point of one of these. To save yourself.
It glinted in his hand, but he was slow as he tried to bring it to his mouth, body shaking as if stuck in a Arctic blizzard.

The man dropped. On one hand, good, because he wasn't rushing towards him. On the other hand, bad, because he'd had to shoot someone.
...Someone who was trying to eat a starseed.
Jeremy was an outsider to this war; he got a crash course from a little brother who was spacey and erratic and had a hard time focusing. He knew that eating a starseed was bad. That he was seconds away from watching somebody cease to exist--permanently. Forever. Gone, goodbye, no coming back. Ever.
He held the starseed in his hand a little closer, a little more protectively.
Jeremy didn't know the benefit of what eating someone's soul was, but he suspected that it didn't mean anything good for him--or the little soul in his hand.
Which meant he couldn't let it happen. He fired one more shot and it echoed, loudly; he could hear it ricochet but didn't see it make contact with anyone. "Put it down on the ground," he commanded. "I can have an ambulance out here but I need you to put both hands on the ground--both of you and stay still."
He didn't know if they'd listen. Maybe they knew he only had one bullet left in the ******** it, they were distracted; he grabbed the spare magazine from his belt and withdrew the nearly empty one. It clattered to the floor with the single remaining bullet and he shoved the fresh magazine into the gun. He'd practiced this a thousand times. He wasn't the fastest, but he was far from slow--and he could do it while protecting the starseed .
And if they didn't want to listen to his words, he had six more reasons to make them reconsider.

Something had gone wrong. Tinaksite knew that when Wolframite was on the ground, and he wasn’t getting back up. Her mind was thankfully moving fast enough to see that he was still moving at least…ah…that…
Panic welled up inside of her, quickly followed by a blinding rage that was even more powerful than the one she had when Wolf was trying to keep her from eating the starseed. The cry that came out of her sounded as though it would have been more at home coming out of a banshee, and she teleported behind the police officer, her flail raised, striking him hard on his hand, working to knock the bullets out of his grasp, and then her eyes fell on an open hole in the ground.
“Die.” She hissed, grabbing his collar and tossing him carelessly down into the hole, searching for something to cover it up, and when she saw the slab of concrete, she thought that it looked absolutely perfect.
With the strength from both her normal powered state, and the extra power coursing through her veins from the starseeds she had eaten, she pulled the slab over the hole and gave a contented growl as it was covered. “You do not shoot those I care for!” She called, not really caring if the male heard her or not.
Right now, all she cared about was Wolf, and getting him somewhere so someone could make sure that he did not die.
Laven would be so upset if anything happened to Wolf.

The starseed was broken into his mouth, the gunshot ringing in his ears but otherwise not stopping him. It was the last ditch effort of a dying man to live. It had been ages since he had one and the effect made his already pained body quiver before going still.
Eyes closed, the half-youma sent still with the sound of Tina rage-filled cry ringing in his ears.

Jeremy's world went dark.
Maybe it was a mixture of hitting his head on the concrete, or maybe it was the fact that he saw a giant concrete slab move above him, but everything faded and even his adrenaline didn't give him the strength to push back.
His body was alight with discomfort--his back and tailbone sent searing white pain throughout him, and when he hit his head he tasted blood after his teeth were done clacking together.
The starseed was still clutched to his chest. His gun was still in his hand.
He groaned, but the noise echoed oddly in the little chamber he suddenly found himself trapped in.
A thin stream of light tapered in from where the slab just barely didn't cover, but it offered no more than a centimetre at its widest. He couldn't even make out sounds outside of him, so instead, he waited--waited for movement, for some scheme, for anything. There wasn't much room to get comfortable, but he swallowed and tried to dismiss the rolling waves of dizziness and nausea as he lay flat, gun angled upwards and ready to fire again if anything moved.
