Notes for playing Theme:Fear, Faith and Materialism . Nkona is a conflict of materialism and faith and the dream of two very different versions of herself: one materialistic and beautiful, summoning and casting as desired, with no fear of the future. The other is closer than ever to the spirits and loa, who knows the future and does her small part in that future-- someone with real divination and healing ability and not being afraid. Marked by times she gets it wrong-- Every time she predicts something wrong is another question as to what her role really is as a santera. Hers is a question of unwavering faith: the slight hesitation that the gods may not heal, may not answer, may not reply, for whatever reason. She doesn’t not feel this--she always feels this, but it’s whether her fear or faith win out.
Her character development is mostly a conflict in desire to hang on to the past and build better futures and versions of herself. Everything she does should push against either her dreams of endless wealth or powerful faith. Give her everyday, small interactions, and give her grand philosophical problems to explore. Wandering Priestess??? -- Nkona devotes herself to Simbi (or another loa?) and travels as a healer and diviner. OPENDespite not being a seer, Nkona was a divination prodigy who was rarely wrong in her interpretations, which has led to confidence in her abilities as a diviner, but more importantly as a santera who is connected with her community. While sheltered and naive from rarely leaving her residence or the car in her early life and being homeschooled even after being sent to the UK, Nkona got to know the outside world through her grandfather’s santería community and approaches people with an open curiosity.
IMPATIENT Neither very talkative nor very reserved, Nkona seems perfectly serene and patient in a ritual or when listening to or divining something for a fellow santero-- indeed she’s happy to listen, but she doesn’t like waiting or stalling for no purpose-- sure she could do something else, but it feels like a waste. Similarly, she tends to cut everything to the last minute because she doesn’t like “wasting” a moment of time before an activity and instead is always late.
VAINNkona loves pretty things, and is easily seduced by pretty things and flattered by compliments. She was reassured she was a special snowflake her whole life--up until she was sent away, and then she realized that “special snowflake” really meant “chess piece”. Still, all that glitters is gold, rhinestones are a girl’s best friend, and it’s better to cry with a big fancy hat than without.
RESPECTFULDespite her impatience and her vanity, if Nkona remembered anything about her grandfather, it was his many lessons on respect-- respecting ancestor spirits, respecting practitioners, respecting strangers, respecting herself. She’ll be the first to credit her divination to the kindness of the oricha guiding her and remembers the loa with every healing. While she’s not particularly generous or keen on dramatic gestures, she does give consideration and regard for the feelings, wishes, rights, and traditions of people around her and dutifully communicates with the oricha and her egun.

xxx🌸BACKSTORY✨xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx 🌸✨EARLY CHILDHOODNkonazana was born to Violeta Castillo and Augustín de Julien. While Violeta was one of many affairs, Nkona was the only apparent child that had come from Augustín’s relationship. Their marriage and child was meant to elevate and continue both their families, but Nkona’s own life was trampled by their obsession with the appearance of wealth.
Born with one weaker eye and severe astigmatism, Nkona was confined within the walls of the family’s property for much of her childhood for treatment. Even after her treatments and getting glasses, she was permitted outside only as a spectacle in pretty dresses to be admired by the press. She had a governor-- a college student babysitter and tutor-- but did altogether horribly in all his lessons. This governor often complained she was too hyper and distracted, and while Nkona was happy to sit through hours of getting her fingers and hair done, her performance in her lessons did not suit her parents’ ideals of a little princess. At six, Nkona was put on medication to help her “control herself and do better in lessons”. Nkona hated the medicine and “forgot it” as often as she could, although she happily took to spiritual guidance and meditation practices. Her greatest success was at age 8, when she persuaded her parents that she would read and do arithmetic without a tutor.
Instead, Nkona preferred to spend her days with her blind grandfather, Santiago Julien, a retired model and practicing santería priest. Santiago thought Nkona had a great amount of aché, or spiritual force: Nkona took surprisingly well to the rituals he performed for practitioners that came to worship, seek counsel or healing. It was also through Santiago and santería that Nkona met the outside world: she heard the complaints and problems of supplicants and found meaning in divining advice or helping to prepare healing herb baths and setting up for more complex rituals. While she was still too young to be part of some of them, she liked talking to people who had been chosen for possession. Nkona was initiated into the community at seven, and her guiding oricha was discovered to be Ochún, goddess of love and rivers.
This life changed when invitations to Behanzin and Beauxbatons Schools of magic arrived when she was eleven: Nkona was confused--of course magic was real: she and and all the santeros practiced it all the time, didn’t they? But her parents were furious, accusing Santiago of deluding her with tricks and delusions. In trying to explain, Santiago tripped and was hospitalized. Nkona was forced to spend more time with her parents, living under their ideals and medicine. At one point, Nkona tried running away to see her grandfather-- instead, she was caught and ultimately locked inside her room. After nearly three weeks of meals through the door, Nkona broke the window, sprained a leg jumping out, and tried to run all the way to the hospital. This time, the police caught her. She spilled everything in her desperation and was allowed to briefly see her unconscious grandfather before being nearly seized by the state. Finally, Augustín offered to send her to extended family living in the UK, as he could not lose his only heir.
Nkona was staying in London, England with her great aunt when the invitations game again. Luckily, her great aunt Ida had been a Beauxbatons graduate herself, which explained her brother’s understanding of the invitations. Nkona chose Behanzin-- if she couldn’t see Santiago anyways, she may as well attend a school that was further from her parents and did magic more like the kind she was familiar with.
🌸✨SCHOOL YEARS 🌸FIRST YEAR Nkona spent much of the first year just understanding classes, magic and the different loa. She admired and liked her mentor student, Lulu Ellis-Hall, and hung out with Lulu and her friends when not in class and joined the Astrology club primarily because of Lulu. She hated cleaning, loved exploring Port-au-Prince, and by the time it came time for her to return to Europe for the summer, Nkona thought of Behanzin as the new normal. She had a great summer comparing what she learned at school with traditional santería concepts with her grandfather and returned to Behanzin ready to learn.
✨SECOND YEAR was largely the same with Nkona hanging around Lulu like a shadow who did everyone's nails. Santiago visited her in Scotland in the winter and they had a blast. It was to be the last time they ever saw each other: In March, Santiago took another fall and never recovered. A few months later, Nkona found out from her father's secretary that her parents had taken him off life support, denying a final goodbye.
When Nkona returned to Seville, she was only allowed to visit the gravesite under supervision and isolated from the other santeros she had known. As her parents started arguing again, this time bringing up her parentage, Nkona was again confined to her room.
🌸THIRD YEAR marked the start of electives and after luckily catching the portkey to school, Nkona fully ignored the outside world, focusing on her studies. She joined the music club and there found she was permitted to learn and play the drums. She took as many electives as she could, excelling in Divination and Healing as expected, and slacking over other subjects. She spent the winter break between visiting Lulu and her family in London and Inverness with her aunt and uncle.
✨FOURTH YEAR After being imprisoned in her room again with her school supplies mostly confiscated and torn between her parents' divorce proceedings, Nkona found out her parents planned to not let her return to Behanzin. When she wrote for help, Lulu and her cousin Riddles broke her out of the house and flew to London for the remainder of the summer. Discussions with magical child protective services and custody trials began over the winter, which she spent in Behanzin, happy to wander the hills and put her divination to practice in her newly official advice columnist position.
Finally in summer, the custody trials settled, and Nkona was officially adopted by Rose and Nell Ellis-Hall, making Lulu her legal as well as spiritual sister! She spent the happiest summer of her young life hanging out with her new family and learning as much as she could about them.
