Dyna laid in the center of her shop, groaning loudly. "Ughhhhhh, I don't know what to maaaaake."

This was the worst thing that could possibly happen, but it happened like clockwork - a horrific cycle. She'd heard of crafters refer to it as artist block. For the life of her, she just couldn't figure out what kind of armor she wanted to make.

It wasn't a lack of materials, that was for sure. Her collected Things towered around her menacingly, mocking her for her indecision. At one point, each one of these items had given her a little spark of joy and inspiration that compelled her to bring them home and store away for the future. Now they all just felt dull and joyless. How could she possibly work when there were so many decisions to be made?

She kicked a foot out in a small tantrum, connecting with one of the wooden buckets that held her scraps. It promptly spilled in front of the doorway, because of course it did. "UUUUGH."

User ImageRagnar was on a mission. Rare were the times when he showed himself in Homewood, but he'd met a traveler recently who had spoken of a little armory run by a clever doe with a knack for the making the stuff, and he'd felt intrigued.

He and his friends had made do all their lives without armor, relying on skill and a healthy dose of luck to escape lethal harm while fighting out in the Barrens. But times were changing. Predators were getting larger, more difficult to take down, and if he had to be honest, the idea of being protected against attacks was growing more and more appealing by the day.

The buck found the armory with little trouble, recognizing the shack as one of countless abominations left behind by the Others. It stood out against the lush trees of Homewood, sorely difficult to miss.

He stepped into the doorway right as Dyna was mid-tantrum. He heard the thunk of hoof against metal, and the bucket's contents sloshed across the ground with a clatter, just as Ragnar put his foot down, smack into the middle of the brand new puddle. The buck paused, eyes the only part of him moving as they went first to the water he now stood in, and then back to the buckskin doe lying in a heap in the center of the shop.

"Perhaps I've come at a bad time," he said, watching her with a mixture of curiosity and concern.

Dyna froze at the voice and slowly looked out the corner of her eye. Yes. Of course. Someone was here. That was totally fine and normal and she had not at all made a terrible fool of herself.

She pressed herself closer to the floor for just a second and groaned quietly one last time - he'd already watched her thus far might as well bring it on home - before finally getting to her feet. She put on the most reassuring smile she could muster. "I'm really sorry, I'm just having a moment. It's not a bad time at all! My name is Dyna and this is Carapace Armory, how can I help you?"

She then noticed the puddle he was standing it and her face immediately fell. "I'm so sorry about that." Today was going to be an emotional rollercoaster. That was what the universe had decided for her.

He could tell he'd embarrassed her by catching her at this particular moment, and he suspected that the last thing she wanted to do was get up and deal with him. Still, she managed it and he had to appreciate the invisible strength it must have taken to paste that smile on her face. The buck answered with his own little smile, more of a smirk, really. His eyes went to the puddle under his hoof, and he shook his head. "This, don't worry about it," he said, drawing on Spillway to quickly draw the water off the ground and evaporate it into the air.

Then he turned to face her, studying the beetle helm she wore with almost unsettling concentration, his eyes tracing the arc and angle of the nose horn and taking in her handiwork with quiet fascination. He seemed to be simultaneously taking in and memorizing all the details on the helm, filing it away for future reference. Whatever he might have been looking for, he evidently found, and after a moment or two of tense silence, he nodded.

Then finally, he said, "Dyna, my name is Ragnar. A wanderer told me of your armory. I would like to commission some armor from you, for myself and two of my warriors."

Dyna let out a small, delighted gasp when he used his ability. "You're an Aqua! That's amazing!" She spent so much of her spare time not at the shop helping the gardeners, so full of Botanics, that she was always excited to see nouls with the other gifts.

She was about to gush about his gift, but then he set in on her with such a scrutinizing eye that she completely froze. It felt like a thousand years that she stood stock still, watching him analyze her. She blushed lightly, uncomfortable under a keen eye, but then she quickly realized that his eyes were set on her armor and not on her. She was much more confident about that. She might not be much to look at, but she knew that her small pieces of her craft absolutely were. She poured her whole heart into her own armor.

Still, it was nice to hear him acknowledge it. She let out the breath she'd been holding in a loud whoosh and beamed. "Someone told you about me?" She couldn't help the excited wiggle of a dance she did. Word of mouth was a form of success. And that was THREE whole orders! "I'd be so happy to help, Ragnar. What exactly are you looking for? What do you do?"

She was so animated. It wasn't what Ragnar would have expected out of an armorer, but her excitement conveyed a passion that he hoped would fuel her work. Armor made with heart was armor that he would trust.

He smiled and inclined his head in response to her little wiggle. "It seems you impressed this traveler with your work, enough for her to feel the need to relay it to others," he said. Most definitely success, if his judgment mattered. The buck's gaze swept past Dyna and around the rest of her shop, taking in the piles of materials she'd stored, nodding in thought as he studied it.

"We travel the land on raids," he began as he finished his sweep of the store. "On our travels, we encounter enemies, mostly dire rats and catbeasts. But with new lands opening for exploration, we're concerned that we may encounter larger predators." Indeed, news of these newly resurrected beasts had traveled quickly out of Homewood, and the stories didn't seem promising.

"We would like to be prepared, in the event that we ever run into these beasts. Heavier armor, I think. Chest plate and leg guards. And our lady may want a helm as well? She likes to stand out, I suppose," he concluded, his smile fading back to a smirk. Yes, Freydis had a flair for drama in the best ways.

It was so nice to know she was finally making a name for herself. Maybe more people would start to flood in?

She listened intently to his information, clearly impressed by him and his party. "Wow. I get scouts in here pretty often that are nervous about running into rats and catbeasts, but it sounds like you're meeting them head on? Thats impressive. And brave." She nodded, making a little bit of overacting out of her approval. "It'll be nice to make some pieces for nouls that are actually trying to do something about the problems."

She turned, beginning to look through her materials as she spoke. "Chest plate and leg guards sounds like a must. If they're going to see a lot of action I'd suggest metal over any kind of leather, but it's going to be heavier. Leather would take that weight off but you'd have to come see me more often for repairs." She seemed to locate whatever she was looking for, because she grabbed a slab of something from the middle of a tower of other Things and pulled with her teeth. The slab slid out and thunked heavily to the floor, and the top of the Tower of Mess teetered threateningly before settling back into place.

"I found this in the ruins. It's some kind of metal I've never worked with before, but I think I could thin it out and make quite a few pieces out of it if I was careful. Might even get your lady's helm out of it too? Or we could go leather with some of this as plating on the most vital bits."

She finally took a deep breath, maybe her first breath through all of that information. "Sorry. I'm excited."

"We do go looking for them from time to time," Ragnar said with a cryptic smile, nodding in the affirmative. Indeed, they went looking for them as a way of life, and loud were the complaints from his warriors when they failed to find a rat nest or two to attack when they went raiding. "We have a rather long history with rats and catbeasts."

He listened with quiet intent as Dyna launched into her explanation of materials and types, and only moved when she went to pull a slab of metal out of her impressive tower of resources. The thing thunked to the floor, and Ragnar's eyes narrowed perceptibly as he studied it.

This thing felt cursed. It probably was cursed. He wondered how it would reflect upon them if they were to wear it as armor, protecting themselves with materials left behind by the very creatures that had destroyed Vykeli. What would the Grandfather think?

He shifted slightly at the thought. But... if they were here to rid the land of the Others' invasive rats, then... perhaps protecting themselves with Other-made metal was fitting. The cogs were churning almost notably in his head as he considered the slab of metal before him.

"I'd like to minimize the metal only to the most vulnerable spots," he said, finally making up his mind. "Just the front section most likely to take damage, if possible. And have it all strapped on with leather. The vital bits, as you say."

He seemed to have settled some of his own worries about offending the Grandfather, and turned to Dyna with a small that was a little more warm, and a little less cryptic. "Your excitement is a sign of great passion. I appreciate it. Don't apologize."

User Image She noticed his expression go somewhat stormy as he looked at the metal and her ears laid back against her head. In her excitement she hadn't really considered what someone else might feel about the materials she specifically took from the ruins of the Others. She herself only used this building when she was working - it was shelter for her materials and tools only. However, she also saw a trade-off. The Others had destroyed their planet and rearranged their lives for generations. So she was going to take what they had left behind and change it - make it of Vykeli - to battle the new threats that were popping up.

It seemed wasteful not to use the advantages they had been left behind.

She opened her mouth to apologize, but he seemed to come to a decision. She breathed a sigh of relief as he agreed to her compromise. At least she hadn't ruined everything. "Okay. I can absolutely do that." Her smile returned with his warm expression, though she was a little more subdued. She realized she'd almost overstepped a horrible line there. "I want this to be something you all can be proud of too. I'm going to work very hard on it."

She turned again, this time grabbing a flat of bark and immediately swung back to hold it against his chest. She marked the outer edges of his chest and shoulders with a scrape of her horn. "You're broad.... Oh! Sorry I should have explained. I need to know how big to make everything. I'll need your party to come in, too, so I can make sure everything will fit properly."

"With the handiwork I've already seen from your work, it should be impossible not to be proud of it," Ragnar said, watching with focused curiosity as she slapped a piece of bark against him and began to take measurements. He wasn't sure what he'd expected, but his expression conveyed a sense of pleasant surprise as Dyna went about her work. "I will send them. For this, I think they could be convinced to come to Homewood for a bit."

He stood stock still as she marked the bark, just his eyes following her as she moved about, fascinated by it all. He was studying, taking it all in. Ragnar had no intention of learning to do any of this by himself, but there was great value in understanding the hallmarks of a good armorer, and Dyna was setting a bar to which he could compare all others. A a high bar she seemed to be setting, too.

"You care," he said, and the appreciation he had for that was evident in his simple words. "How can I pay you for these pieces? We have treasure we could part with, or perhaps we can bring you some other resources from our future raids."

User Image She hummed happily at his answer and set back to work measuring. "I look forward to meeting them."

She double checked his chest measurements, then measured the same way with his legs. Finally, she measured his face. "Just in case," she murmured. She did all in a hyper-focused, meticulous way that left her no room to notice him watching her work. The silence felt comfortable to her - for a moment he was just a mannequin awaiting its armor. She blinked up owlishly when he finally spoke.

"Of course I care! Crumby armorers who don't care are how you get cheap armor that falls apart when you need it most. When I'm done it'll last you - you'll just need to come in when the leather overstretches or gets gouged too deep." She stopped to consider his question, tilting her head back and forth. "You spend a lot of time outside of Homewood. I bet you come across interesting materials. How about we strike a deal? I'll make your armor and care for it when it needs repaired, and you bring me back any interesting materials you find while you're out that I can make new types of armor with? You don't even have to make special trips, just whenever you're nearby." She beamed up and batted her eyes - though it was more cartoonish than pretty. He probably went WAY farther than she ever did and would find really interesting things.

"It'll be a relief to go into battle with armor we can trust, then," Ragnar said, knowing that he and his warriors would all feel proud to wear it. Using the Others' own materials to repel their invasive pests seemed to have its own satisfying irony, now that he thought about it.

"This trade seems very fair to me," he agreed rather readily. It was difficult to put a price on solid handiwork, and it would take little extra effort haul back materials on their travels. "We've come across some good material in the past. And sometimes, the rats hoard things you'd never think of."

Perfect.

When she was finished with her measurements, he gave her a polite dip of his head. "Expect my warriors in a day or two," he said. "One is quite dramatic and the other can be... blunt. Don't worry about them. They're... harmless." It was blatantly not true. But they would be harmless when it came to Dyna and her shop. That much could be guaranteed.

User Image She gave another of those small wiggle dances, excited that he had agreed. It would be so much easier on her to not have to spend as much time gathering materials on her own. "I can't wait to see what you bring!"

She stepped back and put the flat of bark up on her bench, freeing him from her scrutiny. "I look forward to meeting them! I'll get started on your pieces right away. Stay safe and come back in one piece, can't put guards on a missing leg." She bowed her head in an excited but awkward farewell and beamed at him his whole way out. She'd started today frustrated, but she was happy to finish it off newly inspired.
