Whisler was happy. Life was honestly settling down and going much better than it had been for a while, and he was almost ready to truly decide on a date for his and Arias’ wedding, and he finally realized that he…wanted it. He felt…secure in things for the first time in a long while…and perhaps not powering up all that often was helping.

Obviously, he had to power up and take trips to his wonder every so often or he started to feel sick, but it didn’t have to happen too often…and as long as he stayed away from anyone with a chaotic aura…everything was fine.

If he were going to be truly honest, he wished that he could get rid of the transcendence just for the fact that he could give up the powered life forever…and with that…give up all of the hold that chaos still had for him. If there wasn’t any temptation…then he wouldn’t ever break Arias’ heart.

And that…sounded like the greatest thing ever.

Tonight he was out, with a few supplies for his wonder, planning a weekend trip up there. He had told Arias, and seemed happy about everything, a bag of food from the convenience store in his hand as he sat on the edge of a roof, closing his eyes to begin his transportation back up to his wonder.

He paused after a moment, feeling the sickly darkness of someone of high ranking chaos and swore softly.

Hopefully, he could just hurry this up.

It had been a long walk out of the Rift, from where Unobtanium had abandoned him, dripping the strange inky-oil the whole way. But he'd done it, had walked throguh the Hall of Shadows, and brought himself back to Destiny City.

And as soon as he did....there it was. The beautiful, singing-pure aura of a Transcended Knight, so bright it felt like it burned. Perhaps this was the Knight he found himself longing for so foolishly; if it wasn't, well. Ashanite would simply eliminate a threat to the Negaverse.

So he teleported up to the roof, closer to the aura, and there, bright as the sun itself, was Whisler.

Ashanite felt his heart catch, in a way that was wholly inappropriate. This was exactly the weakness Unobtanium had exploited; his desire for something soft and warm, something he could never have.

"Hello, Whisler," he said, idly.

He was halfway through saying the words which would take him up to his wonder when he heard his name in a heartbreakingly familiar voice. Whisler’s eyes opened with a snap, and his head swung around, mouth hanging open in slight surprise as he looked at the General before him.

“…Ashanite.” He replied, his voice cracking slightly.

The General…looked different. He was wearing a shirt for one, and even though it looked damn good, Whisler felt a small twinge of disappointment for the lack of Ashanite’s chest.

He stood slowly, seeming wary and his eyes continued to flicker over the male. He didn’t look happy to see him, didn’t look…pleased…he just looked.
Almost bored.

“…It’s been a while. You look good. That’s a nice shirt you have.” He sounded utterly pathetic, and he knew it…but.

But…it was Ashanite. His utter foil, and someone who it seemed he was bound to run into, no matter how hard he struggled to stay away.

"It has been a while, hasn't it," he said, thoughtfully, tilting his head to the side. "Longer than it should have been. I am sorry, darling, but there were....extenuating circumstances." He moved forward, into Whisler's personal space.

What to do. What to do. What he wanted to do was grab Whisler's face and kiss him, but that was...a terrible idea. He'd be opening himself up, all over again, and risking exactly the same kind of betrayal.

"The shirt is new. Very new, actually. Funny story, how I got it." Almost unconsciously, Ashanite began to circle Whisler, like a predator sizing up his prey. "I've been working with a Russian General for a while. Unobtanium. And he asked me to show him the Rift, so I agreed." He paused. "And while we were down there, he lured me into a false sense of security, because I'm an idiot, and then he shoved me into a lake of....I don't even know how to describe it."

He summoned his weapon to hand, and watched as the same substance from the lake slowly dripped off the blade, pooling at his feet. "Well, you can see it." He shrugged his shoulders. "He meant to kill me. Obviously, he failed."

Then, with a very fake smile, he turned fully to face Whisler. "So tell me, what have you been doing?"

Whisler kept his eyes on the male, a slight hunger beginning to flash in them. He knew he should go. Leave this, leave the temptation far behind him but. God was it ever hard.

He watched as the male began to circle, and a small sense of unease began to seep through him, his eyes narrowing slightly. “Oh? Are…are you all right?” He didn’t like the idea of Ashanite being taken advantage of like that. Had never liked it. Not when it was his side doing it, or the Negaverse. Nobody had any right to hurt his General.

Taking a half step towards the male, Whisler hesitated, his eyes landing on the weapon, frowning as it seemed to drip oil, or something like it onto the ground. “…Ashanite, what can I do to help?”

The concern was unfeigned, and the worry that filled his eyes was genuine, despite the walls that he had been trying to build up against the male. “…I haven’t been doing much. I’ve…ah…been focusing on my civilian life mostly…but. You know. My wonder calls and I have to go or else…” He shrugged. “You know how I get. Sick and dizzy.”

Ashanite laughed, and it sounded more than a little on edge. "Oh, I'm fantastic. I feel better than I have in years. And I see so many things clearly that I've struggled with." Like Whisler. This...dance, this tango they kept doing. It couldn't keep going on.

Not unless Ashanite wanted to keep having a glaring, glowing weakness.

He tilted his head to the side. "I don't need help, darling, but it's sweet of you to ask." He moved closer and gestured at Whisler.

"You know, you wouldn't have to do that, if you'd come with me a few years ago." He sighed, disappointedly. "But you made your choice, didn't you? And it wasn't me. It's never going to be me, is it?"

Whisler frowned, his brows furrowing and he shook his head. That wasn’t fair. It hadn’t truly been a choice. And hadn’t…hadn’t Ashanite promised to help him undo it? Hadn’t he promised that they would find a way together?

“You know that wasn’t my fault. You know that I’m still…I don’t know. You said you’d help me get rid of it. You said you’d help bring me home, but you haven’t been around.” The words were full of his own pain, his selfish weakness for the General.

“I’ve asked around. Other transcended, I’ve looked for ways to get rid of it, and none of them know how. I’ve reached out to other members of the Negaverse…I’ve…asked around for you. Told them that you were supposed to help me. They said they’d let you know but…” He gave a suddenly bitter laugh. “…I guess I figured when you never showed up anywhere that you didn’t want to help me anymore.”

He looked up at the male and held out a hand, his expression half tortured. “You know that I would have given it up for you if I could. You know I would have come back with you the moment that the glow had faded if it…if you…”
If he had been there at all.

“…You know that I love you.”

Ashanite sighed, faintly. "I did, didn't I. But here we are, still. We've both sought a way to break it, but no one seems to know how. Perhaps...the way this happens is if you give your heart to your Wonder completely. If you were truly willing to break free...perhaps it might end. But you would have to choose that, with your whole heart."

Ashanite stepped into Whisler's space, drawing a thumb over the glowing snowflakes on his cheek. "I love you, too, you know. But I don't think you'll ever be able to choose me, truly. And because of that..." He stepped back, and shifted his grip on his weapon.

"You're a weakness I can't afford. If Unobtanium showed me nothing else, he showed me that." Then, he spun his staff around, and brought it forward, aiming to drive the blade into Whisler's gut.

Whisler fell quiet, letting his eyes close at the touch on his cheek, craving it with the all-consuming desire of an alcoholic with a cup full of whiskey. When he said that he loved Whisler too, the knight felt his heart skip a beat, maybe two and he opened his eyes once again, giving a soft, joyful smile. He needed Ashanite, he knew that. Needed him like he needed air in his lungs and food in his stomach.

When the male drew away, he opened his mouth to protest, to ask him to come back, to--

Pain.

Terrible pain.

For a moment, the Knight just frowned, not understanding the words, the way Ashanite had moved.

The pain in his stomach.

Finally, he looked down stupidly, his brows furrowing in utter confusion. “…What?” The question was so honestly, openly confused, so full of hurt and a betrayal that he couldn’t quite fathom.

“…But…I love you.”

It was the only protest he could think of, and after a moment, he swayed on his feet. “…I don’t…why?”

The moment he did it, Ashanite felt a surge of regret. But that was exactly the weakness Unobtanium had mocked him for; a softness at his very core that had him hesitating to destroy a Transcendent Knight, an enemy of the Negaverse who could never be turned back.

"I'm sorry. But this is the only way this is ever going to end." A soft, sad sigh passed his lips. "Goodbye, Whisler. I know you probably don't believe me, but I do love you. So much I think I might collapse under the weight of it, sometimes. and I wish we could have had a proper love story, but....here we are."

And then, he closed his eyes and pictured his apartment, and teleported away.
