A week had passed since that night at the festival, and that meant that Koray had plenty of time to reflect on what happened. Needless to say, the next day he had been thoroughly embarrassed by his behavior! What had he been doing, clinging to some stranger like that?! Someone that Ilkay hadn't had a chance to meet yet?! And even he knew that what he had been feeling wasn't the same as when he met Iro, or any of Ilkay's other friends! He had been so clingy, surely Oduin had to hate him by now! Or at the very least, be offended by him, the same way those kids where. So when he didn't come the next day, or the next, It had settled in his heart that yes, he had chased Oduin away with his strangely clingy behavior, and didn't deserve his friendship. And that was okay. He still wanted to do what he had promised, and worked diligently on the embroidered leather sword strap by the window, day after day. Once ti was finished... Maybe he could give it to the guards here in the city... Maybe Oduin would somehow talk to them, or the guards would find him and he'd be able to get the gift. Maybe he'd throw it away... It had been finished only a few hours ago, and now he seemed listless, half laying out the window and staring up at that hot, summer sky. It would be greedy to make another wish to see his guard again but... The sun counted as a star to wish on, right? Maybe it would work again.

The meeting had gone well, and Oduin had been told immediately afterward that the guard would be happy to have him on, and that he could relocate from his current hostel to the barracks. They'd have a specific assignment for him in the morning when he reported for duty, and he had the rest of the day to move what few belongings he had into the part of town reserved for the rich and the powerful. He made his way cheerfully through the streets, feeling a rush from knowing he'd done something right. He was getting somewhere, and the reward that came with marked progress always made him doubly enthused to put in the hours and the effort. The new experiences were nothing to complain about either. Never before had Oduin lived in a barracks with a company of others, and he'd have to learn how to share, he supposed. But it was all in the name of figuring out this whole thing called life, and he was happy to do it. As he wound his way through the streets, he came across a familiar-looking river. Koray's house was on his way back to the hostel, and judging by the sun in the sky, he had a bit of time before he needed to hustle to transfer his belongings over. Remembering what Koray had said the week before, he made his way toward the house, only to find the boy leaning against the window, staring at some indeterminate point in the distance. "Hey, Koray!" Oduin said, looking up from where he stood to the window.

Koray had been considering the taste of one particularly fluffy cloud when he heard his name called. "Hmm?" It took a moment to actually figure out who was calling him, but when he did, he nearly jumped out of his skin! Maybe the gods were real and they kept answering him! Maybe he had been that good of a boy to see someone he longed to so badly! "Oduin! Hello! It's so good to see you!" The window wasn't too high off the ground, but enough so that when he leaned out of it, he still was a foot or two above the man below. "I.. I'm really glad you came by! How are you? Did you have a meeting? Oh! Would you like to come in for something to drink? It's hot outside!"

"It went well!" Oduin said with a bob of his head. "I'm supposed to move over to the barracks in the middle of the settlement today. I was just headed back to the hostel." He hesitated for a moment, wondering if it was the socially appropriate gesture to accept the invitation inside. But it was hot and a nice drink wouldn't be the worst thing - in fact he'd only just been thinking about chugging a nice flask of water the moment he got home. So he shrugged and nodded lightly. "Yea, sure, it'd be stupid of me to say no to a drink in this weather."

Inviting people into the house only seemed natural these days! So many people who weren't kids his own age seemed to be friendly enough! Iro had been a delight, and he already knew Oduin wasn't a bad person, so it was fiiiine. His Ma and Pa and Dad were all fine with it too, sure! Or they would be when he would tell them about it later. "Okay, one moment!" Koray withdrew from the window, and in a few moments, he was down at the door, holding it open for him. The greeting table was right there for him to sit at after a small flight of stairs, and from that table, it was easy to see where he had been sitting before. "What would you like? We have juice and water and barely tea! Ooh, and would you tell me more about the job? What are you guarding? I can't believe you get to live in the Barracks!"

Hopefully nobody would bust into the house and demand to know what he - a perfect stranger - was doing here. Oduin decided that staying near the door would be the best option, perching himself at a seat that was most accessible to the exit (and therefore also the least intrusive into the home). "Water's good," he said with an easy smile. "They haven't told me what part of the city I'll be assigned to, but they should know by tomorrow. Probably got a bit of training for a couple weeks and then rotate into one of the companies." To be honest, he wasn't totally sure how it all worked, This kind of structure was nowhere to be found in Sauti, and his family certainly had no experience of any sort. Everything was new, which was honestly half the fun. "Yea, the barracks will be interesting! I've been warned they aren't the nicest, but I've stayed in some pretty sketchy hostels, so it can't possibly be worse than that," he said.

As requested, Koray got the glass and sat it down before the man, though he didn’t sit down himself just yet. “It sounds like you won’t be on assignment until well after we leave. That makes me a little sad.” Though, it was probably for the best. Couldn’t have a kid trailing around behind him while on patrol after all, and Koray knew he could be a distraction a lot of the time. It was definitely one of the reasons why he tried to stay home as much as he could when Koray went out. Causing trouble for people was his least favorite thing! “Do you get uniforms too? I’ve seen some of the guards in them! .... They aren’t very well made though. I do hope that you can, um... Be comfortable in the barracks. You shouldn’t stay in dangerous places though! Ma said it’s better to keep walkin’ than stay somewhere where you gotta keep a knife under your pillow.”

"Yea, and I have no idea where they might put me. Could be anywhere in the settlement," he said, nodding a little, and then breaking out into a smile. "Hopefully a part I haven't seen before though! There are areas I'd never think about visiting on my own, so this could be a cool extended field trip." He took a few gulps of water out of the glass, looking terribly pleased to be hydrated. "I think there are uniforms, but they're simple, unless you get assigned to a specific person's guard and they have their own uniform," he said. He'd never worn a uniform either, and wasn't too sure what to think about the institution. "And it seems like the barracks will be alright, don't worry. These seem like halfway decent people." And if there was anything Oduin didn't worry about, it was making friends. "What about you? What have you been up to?"

"Really? You've not seen the whole city? ... I guess I haven't either! But it'd be fun to go see them sometime! I know different districts have different foods! Maybe we can go see it together sometime if you're not busy!" ... Given the fact that he wasn't exactly safe here in this side of town on his own, he kinda doubted that he'd be safer anywhere else alone. "Hmmm... well, if there's anything I can do to help make your barracks comfortable, let me know! I'm really good with a needle in thread! Ah! Right!" Koray disappeared into the back room, to grab the belt he had been working on, then rushed back out, hands behind his back. "I said I was gonna make you something for when you came to visit again.. Can you guess what it is?"

Oduin chuckled and shook his head. "Yea, man, it's a big city!" he said with some measure of amusement. He'd only been here a week, after all. And truth be told, he was still busy adjusting to the hustle and bustle of the place. "Plus, I don't spend much time actually exploring." He pursed his lips and counted quickly on his fingers. "I've spent six of the last seven days doing some form of training or other. I figure the job will show me part of the city." But mostly, he just didn't like to skip what he considered a crucial part of his profession. The fact that he thoroughly enjoyed training didn't help in the slightest. He was still somewhat musing on this thought when Koray suddenly rushed out of the room and then reappeared holding his hands behind his back, and Oduin abandoned the train of thought to focus on the moment. "Oh! You really didn't have to," he said with a smile. "But uh..." He thought of the embroidered handkerchief. Probably something needly as well. "A scarf of some sort?"

"Hehe, nope, you're wrong! But it was a good guess! It's hot here in Oba, so I'm not so sure how well a scarf would work. And scarves are easily damaged in rough fights, and get real dirty real easy so.. I was thinking something a little tougher." Koray came a little closer, a small, shy smile on his face. After a moment of hesitation, he offered Oduin the leather belt he had made. While leather wasn't exactly his forte, he did his best and the stitching was straight and strong. And rather than use the more delicate patterns of the handkerchief, this one was far more masculine in a way, one that didn't stand out too horribly against what he saw Oduin wear before. "Here... It even has a little holster for your sword too!"

That was true. There was not real need for a scarf down in the balmy land of Oba. Sweltering, even. Oduin found it both hot and unusually humid, but that was all part of the experience. "Wow that's beautiful!" he said, eyes wide as Koray handed him the belt. "This is fantastic. You did an amazing job with this." He unraveled in slowly, running it through his hands as he took in the handiwork. So much attention to detail. "You really do have a talent for this stuff, you know," he said, finally looking up from the belt. "You could probably sell these for some good pocket change." Maybe even make a living out of it, if that was what he wanted.

Ah, those compliments again! Koray’s skin flushed, and he covered his face, getting overwhelmed by it all. “Y-You are too kind, Sir Oduin... I really worked hard on it for you.. I really, really wanted to make sure it would last...” The idea of meeting Oduin again far in the future, his belt still in use, was a dream... Maybe around that time, he could hire him this time. “I was thinking maybe I could one day, but I don’t think I could really make something as good as this to sell. I wanted something special for you, so I put my heart into it.”

"Sounds like something a real crafter would do," he said with a wink. Oduin slung Koray's belt over his shoulder, freeing his hands to undo his current one and pull it out with a flourish. His old belt was plain, but supple with years of wear, and he paused to roll it up and tuck it into his pocket before sliding the new one on. "This fits perfectly!" he said, sounding pleased. "Thank you, Koray! This is a beautiful gift. You seem to have a knack for giving out things that money can't buy, which is a real talent." Somehow, it seemed like things that had been made with passion seemed to just work. Oduin didn't know why, but he wasn't about to complain.

“S-Sir Oduin...” Koray only hid his face more, completely flustered at this point. It certainly wasn’t a bad feeling, but he couldn’t put it to words properly. He really needed to ask maybe Ilkay or Iro about this, otherwise it was going to be awkward like this all the time. “It was a gift to see you again, so... I think it’s an equal trade. I can’t... I’m not good with explaining how I feel, so maybe, I thought, if I made something that could last longer than words on the air could, then my feelings could be understood. Does that maybe make sense?”
