There was plenty of stock to set aside to sell, as well as to fill up the biggest basket he had to give to Ahio. Pekelo did his best to pick out the sweetest, juiciest bits of kelp and coral he could, stuffing that basket full before he set out to meet Ahio in their little secret hideaway.

It was strange... Before they met pretty often, but now, it seemed like every day they were meeting up. Sometimes for short moments, a simple quick greeting to talk about the day, cuddle, and then parting with the most tender of embraces. Other times it would be for hours on end, late into the sleeping hours, finding comfort with each other and allowing this peace to take ahold of them for as long as it could.

Perhaps that’s why Pekelo didn’t seem to panic when Ahio told him to come to the cave today. Of course, he wouldn’t panic, nor would he rush. Unlike his companion, he valued being prim, proper, and on time. ... Though, not so much the first two, but certainly on time.

Once he was dismissed, he carried his basket right to his little cave, eager to see Ahio and greet him as lovingly as he could.

“Ahioooo~ I’m home~”

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. For once, Ahio was early. Well... early in the sense that he'd arrived first. It was hard to be on time or late to an emergency meeting, really. He was swimming up and down the length of their hideout cave, trying to rehearse how he would break the news to Pekelo.

He was leaving.

It was only temporary. He would be back in a matter of weeks. But still, he was leaving the caves without Pekelo, and he hated that they couldn't go together, especially in the midst of this new development with the engagement and meeting Vaiarii, and... Oof, how Ahio hated the idea of losing out on precious time with Pekelo at this critical juncture of their lives.

But... he couldn't not. He couldn't let little Ikaika fend for himself, and he certainly couldn't ask the lost youngling to stay down here, away from his family, any longer than necessary.

So he'd called an emergency meeting, only... he hadn't done a good job of communicating the emergency. So when Pekelo waltzed into the hideout full of pep and holding a big basket of coral, Ahio knew he'd probably messed up. This was not going to go well...

Still, he swept over to Pekelo and wrapped him up in a tight embrace. "Pekelo, you made it!"

“Hehe, of course I did! I’m right on time.” Pekelo juuust managed to drop the basket before returning the embrace, pressing a kiss to his love’s cheek.

“I brought lots today! I even got some of your favorite! You and your parents will really love this batch!” From where he was, he gave the basket a quick little nudge with his foot, before pulling away and flopping down on the pile of blankets, cozy as can be!

“You seemed really excited for me to come here today. What’s up? Got some good news?”

Ahio squeezed him for maybe a little longer than was necessary before drawing back to marvel at the fresh basket of delectable goods Pekelo had brought. Oh boy. He managed a nod. "Thanks, Pekelo, this looks amazing. We- They'll really enjoy it."

Because, well, Ahio would be gone.

He did his best not to fidget as he floated over to the blankets and perched himself down next to Pekelo, who seemed... particularly high in spirits today.

"Uhm, well, you know. Excited. Well, you see, it wasn't really excitement... per se, it was just... urgent," Ahio began. This was not a good way to introduce this. Everything he'd rehearsed had apparently just been tossed out in favor of whatever this mess was, coming out of his mouth. "I've got news."

He tried to stress that part, so that Pekelo would realize it wasn't necessarily good news.

“They’ll?” He caught that, and Pekelo squinted his eyes at Ahio.

It took a second, but now he realized, whatever it was, it wasn’t good. That simple statement was enough to ease away his smile, and force him to sit up properly.

“Urgent... I’m sorry I got that wrong. What is it?” Was it news of his own engagement? Or someone sick? Thousands of possibilities were going through his head, and one stuck hard and made his stomach fall to his feet.

.... Had they been caught?

“Don’t beat around the bush, Ahio. Just say it, okay?” Pekelo took one of Ahio’s hands and pulled it to his lips, kissing between his knuckles. “Whatever it is, we’ll face it together, just like we’ve faced everything else!”

How were they going to face it together when they would literally be apart? Ahio wasn't sure, but he couldn't keep Pekelo in suspense anymore.

"You know how we always dreamed of the surface?" he said with a little sigh, finding it terribly difficult to maintain eye contact as he said it. Pekelo's optimism in the face of this impending news only tightened the growing knot in his stomach. "Well, I uh... I think I'm going."

He shook his head. Not he thought, he was.

"I mean, I am going. Soon. Like, almost immediately." He took a deep gulp of air and finally forced himself to look up.

Strangely enough, of all the things and horrible situations Pekelo’s mind could come up with, suddenly going to the surface was not one of them.

“Wait, wait... Why? Why all of sudden? Why out of nowhere? Why do you have to go when we have so many adults to go? Don’t you think it’s a little soon to go up there?” The shock of it all kept any other feelings at bay for the moment. He wasn’t angry, or upset, or excited for it, he just needed to know why.

“Why so soon? Are you even ready for something like that?”

The short answer to "was he ready for this" was a resounding NO. But this wasn't the time to focus on that. He'd made this commitment, and for once, he was determined to see it through. Ikaika depended on him.

"I found this little youngling. He somehow made it down here all on his own, from the swamps. He needs to go home," Ahio said, trying to start at the beginning. "It's a miracle he didn't get eaten on his way down, there's no way he's making that trip all the way back on his own."

There wasn't necessarily a strict reason saying he had to be the one to go, other than a sense of obligation stemming from the fact that he'd been to the one to find Ikaika, and he'd been the one who promised to see him back to the surface.

"As far as I know, there are no other adults heading to the surface right now. My father just got back and he needs a good while before he can justify going back," he continued. "And I don't want to waste time convincing someone to do it. He needs to get back to his parents."

And perhaps there was a small part of him that was doing it because he was still afraid to see how this situation with Pekelo and Vaiarii would play out. He'd enjoyed their daily meetings so much, but inevitably, that would change, and Ahio was terribly afraid of the moments when he was alone with his thoughts and had to contemplate the future.

So maybe, instead, this trip up to the surface would help him get a little bit of distance and gain some perspective. If nothing else, it would distract him for a few short weeks.

Pekelo had to admit, the reasoning behind it was honorable atleast. Surely, had he been in Ahio's situation, he would have been the first to return the child home. But... To go back up there all on his own? It scared him, and in a way, he felt betrayed.

"No one else is heading up here right now, but did you ask? ... Right, convincing... You're right. Our people can be bullheaded to a fault, but still..." How could he put this... He didn't want to come off as selfish, or jealous of the situation. And a child was at risk! Had his own little youngling got trapped up near the surface, not only would he be losing his mind and trying his best to find them, he would pray to all the ocean for someone to bring them home.

Ahio must have been the answer to the youngling's parents' prayers... Who was he to deny that?

"... I don't want you to go alone. I... I should go to! Is there enough time for me to hurry and pack? If we're only gone a few weeks, I'm sure the punishment wouldn't be too awful, especially if I told them why I was going, right?"

Oh no. Before Pekelo even finished his question, Ahio was shaking his head. It wasn't that he wanted to deny Pekelo this chance to visit the surface, but it was so rushed, so unplanned, and the trip required strength and stamina. Plus, he couldn't just abandon his responsibilities here, not his engagement.

"Pekelo," he said quietly, with a small sigh. "You know that's not a good idea..." Saying those words hurt. He felt like he was denying his best friend the chance to fulfill a dream they'd shared since childhood.

But there were too many factors rooting against them.

"Going up takes... takes a lot out of you, for one," he said, cautiously. He didn't want to suggest that Pekelo couldn't make it, but he didn't want to stress his friend. "And what about your garden? And... well, and your engagement. Can you imagine what your mother would do if you left without warning." He didn't mention the Depths, but he knew the threat hung over them anyway.

"... Yeah, I know it's a bad idea! But I can't just let you go without me! We talked about this time and time again! We promised we'd both go up there! But now you're changing your mind?" Shock easily melted away into agitation and betrayal when Ahio told him no. A bitterness was dredging up within him, and he rose to his feet, glaring down at his friend.

"Why does it have to be you who helps this kid?! You're just... You're just a kid yourself! And we both know you can't defend anyone! That's why I was supposed to go with you! I was going to learn magic or something and help protect you! We could protect one another that way! Are you suddenly changing your mind and wanting to go by yourself because of me? Because of this stupid engagement?! I didn't want to do it, and you know that! But I didn't think you'd be so bitter and go as far as to abandon me here! What if you like it more up there? What if you never come home?! Don't you know how much my heart will break because of that?!"

"No, no, no, no, no," Ahio said, shaking his head rapidly. Although, he understood where this outburst was coming from. If it had been the other way around, he would have reacted in the same way. "It's not about you, it's not about any of this, it's just about..." He reached for the right words, but they seemed terribly elusive.

"I found the kid. I was the one who told him I'd make sure he made it back safely. I don't want to just pawn him off on someone else," he said after a sigh. "I want you to be there, but you have obligations here. You have responsibilities. You have so many reasons to stay."

Ahio only had the one. And he didn't want that one reason alone to mean that a child would be disappointed and have to return to the surface on all his own.

"My father wants me to go... he thinks this having this responsibility will be good for me. And in his words, 'You made the promise, you can make sure you see it through,'" he said, trying one more time to reason with Pekelo and make him understand that none of this was personal. None of this was a reaction against the engagement.

"I'm going to come back, Pekelo! I would never leave you here on your own! You know that. I'll come back and I'll... I'll tell you all about it. I'll make maps so we won't have to wonder where we're going. I'll take you with me when it can be a trip for just the two of us. No other obligations." He raised his eyebrows hopefully. "Please. Don't be angry with me. I'm not trying to hurt you. I'm just... just trying to do this one thing for myself. So I can know that I can be reliable once in a while."

Everything Ahio said made sense... He could see why this would be good for him, and why his dad would even encourage it. Maybe even his dad thought that perhaps if he had been better at being good at keeping himself together and reliable, this wouldn't have happened in the first place.

They could have been together, and happy not only in secret.

All of that still did little to soothe Pekelo's anxieties and fears, and he couldn't bring himself to look Ahio in the eyes anymore, only focusing his gaze at the pillows off in the corner.

"I'm not angry... I'm just... I know you say you'll come back, and you can make all the promises you'd like, but I can't believe them... If you go... I have no way of ensuring you'll come back.. Or that you won't get distracted, or anything at all... If you stayed, or if I went with you, I could at least have that assurance that you'll be by my side in the end.. A-and not only that, I need you... How am I supposed to get through this all by myself... I-I don't think I can be happy without you here, Ahio... I love you.."

Ahio sighed. Pekelo's fears were certainly not unfounded, but hearing them still hurt. He had nobody but himself to blame, and he hated that about himself. Still... maybe this was the opportunity he'd always needed to start to change.

"Pekelo..." he said slowly. "We were never going to get to be together all the time, forever. Not since... not since your mother first started thinking about who she would marry you off it. It was never going to be me." It sucked. But it was reality.

"I love you too. And I'm coming back, even if you're the only thing here that's bringing me back. I promise. I will always come back for you. If you don't believe anything else, I need you to believe that much," he said, staring toward the same pillows that Pekelo was looking at.

"Listen, we'll... we'll make a pact. A pact to go to the surface together, you and me, nobody else. It can't be this time, but I'll come back with all the knowledge we need, and we'll go up together."

"Even if that was true, atleast I could dream about it.. And having you here made it feel like more of a possibility of happening. I don't like this, it feels like you're just giving up on me..." Even if Ahio said that this wasn't about him, or his betrothal, it must have been a part, somehow. And that feeling just wouldn't shake off.

"If you're going to say that... Then... Then when you come back, when you have everything you need to know and promise that we'll go up there together, then... I'll promise to be ready. While you're gone, I'll start packing everything important to me, and prepping for our journey up there together. We'll run away together! We'll go to the surface and find somewhere else to live together, and forget all this engagement stuff. Even if I like him, I love you, and I don't want to dream of a future without you by my side." he was worked up, anxious, shaking with the new knowledge that Ahio told him but he had always been good at reeling himself back in.

... He wasn't sure if he could keep his hopes up for long...

"With this pact... What happens if you don't come back..? How long should I keep waiting...? I know you say you'll come right back for me, and I believe you, I do... but weeks stretch into months, then to years... Is there something you can do to reassure me that you'll come home to me?"
