Quote:
It was already late in the evening but the merchant seemed unfazed by the passing of time. He sat, poised and elegant, watching the world around him. He didn’t seem bored but he sat, fingers laced atop the table; below it, he kept his toe tapping to some silent tune in his head. He was tall, by human standards, though while sitting down he didn’t seem particularly threatening. If you didn’t look at his face.

He had graceful features--sharp and refined. His chin and nose tapered to a point, giving him an air of sophistication, but that, combined with his slitted eyes and pointed teeth, there was something undeniably predatory about him. He watched with a hungry gaze and a mischievous, nearly sinister smile. His ears were pointed and were prominent despite being tucked behind his vibrant, multi-colored hair. The most intrusive feature that indicated there was something not human about him were the curling horns protruding from his temples and the oil-slick black scales that brushed his cheeks and forehead. He was well dressed, in a fashion obviously otherworldly, and seemed to enjoy dressing himself up in glistening gemstones.

His stall was somehow both simple and overwhelming; it was only a table with a deep purple cloth over it, but scattered neatly atop it were an array of items that seemed to carry some magical weight to them.

He did not seem intimidated in the slightest and, upon noticing a customer approaching, he smiled.

He did not rise to meet them nor adjust his position in the slightest. He followed them with his fierce eyes.

In a silky voice, he greeted, “Welcome.”

It was late in the evening, and Morie was headed home from the library, riding her bike slowly down the street, not in any particular hurry to get home, not when she knew that Tochi would no doubt still be up and recording her livestreams and singing her songs. If anything, taking the long way home gave her some time to hear herself think, without being interrupted or pestered to help with things... especially when it came to classwork.

So far, Tochi had yet to send her any text about the stone she had found, which suggested to Morie that her sister had yet to discover it missing. That was more than a little frustrating, the idea that Tochi could be so careless and oblivious to where she could lose something and not know it, especially when the younger girl always made such a fuss about how 'limited edition' some of her collectibles were.

As she passed through the city, a strange stall caught her attention. Morie had only browsed some of the vendors' stalls here and there, not particularly interested in most of what had been offered, but for some reason, this one in particular seemed to draw her towards it. As she drew closer, she couldn't help but notice the merchant running the stall, and his... unique appearance. It was slightly offputting, but also, in a way, interesting?

Parking her bike for now, she walked up to the table, wishing to know what it was that called to her so. "... Hello," she greeted in return, not quite finding him a threat, but also not quite knowing what to make of him in general.

"You seem a little hesitant. Why don't you come closer?" the man asked, keeping a pleasant smile on his face. "I'm not here for blood, I'm here for a trade. Come, come. You can take a look at anything on my table, don't be shy. Tell me if something catches your eye, and we'll discuss an arrangement. I won't part with it for anything less than a treasure you hold," he warned. "But I am quite partial to very shiny things."

He gestured to the things atop his table. "I have weapons and jewelry and trinkets of all sorts. Or books, even? You seem the scholarly type. I'm certain you've never read something like this," he said, reaching over to the other end of the table and letting his long fingers graze over a visibly aged, but seemingly well-preserved book. It might have once been a vibrant blue but now it was faded. It looked like it may have been adorned with little gems at some point in time but now, there was only a faded, gold symbol of Polaris printed on the cover.

Despite his otherworldly appearance, Morie could tell there was truth in the merchant's words, though the sensible side of her was saying it was still worth it to exercise a healthy amount of caution. She was, after all, not as impulsive as her sister may be. "Of course, I'm sorry, I mean no offense," Morie replied, as she drew closer to the table, "I wasn't expecting to find anyone still open this late into the evening."

Most of the vendors, after all, usually would close up shop by now, given the dangers that lurked in the night, but perhaps this merchant felt confident enough, whether in his location or his own abilities, to stay open? Morie's gaze followed the merchant's gesture, towards the items on display on his table, but she didn't see anything of interest at first, as she wasn't as big on jewelry as Tochi was, and weapons weren't really useful to someone who hadn't been trained properly in how to wield them.

Books, though?

Morie was a bit surprised at first that she could be identified that easily as 'scholarly', but then again, it was no secret that she took her studies very seriously. The book in particular that the merchant had his hand on specifically didn't escape her notice, and, while she was still an inexperienced page, Morie could recognize the symbol of Polaris, faded as it was.

"... That book you have- where did you find that?" she couldn't help but ask, curiously, "If you happen to remember, that is."
