Homewood's gossip had been at a constant boil. At long last, the wanderers had found something out in the Barrens. Had it been that the noulicorns had finally channeled enough magic that they were being rewarded? Or had some sap finally just wandered around out there enough they'd run into something of value? One way or another, there was something out there to find. Davvyd had thrilled at the idea since he'd heard whispers, and now Wanderlust themselves had confirmed it! And issued a challenge. Go to Mistfruit Forest, and return with a story. This was the exact sort of thing that would thrill the heart of any doe. Davvyd simply could not contain himself. But it was a long way away. It was dangerous to cross the Barrens alone, any noul with a brain knew that.

So he stood at his friend's home, hoping he could tempt with with adventure. Fulsome usually wasn't the sort to go gallivanting off, but Davvyd had heard this new place had a strange structure built by the Others, a dam, holding back a lake. If that didn't interest Fulsome, nothing on Vykeli would.

Golyath didn't wait, and swoops off of Davvy'd back, winging his way into his friends house. "Fulsome! Have you heard? A dam from the Others has been located!" The faery settled on a rocky shelf, above the momentarily surprised noulicorn. Fulsome gawked up at the faery.

"What?!? Where? In the Ruins?" Fulsome had clearly been studying the book that was laid out on the ledge. Davvyd trotted forward, glad to see his friend, and even gladder than he seemed interested.

"Golyath's right. Some wanderer's found a whole new place. Called Mistfruit Forest. And there's some sort of Other built dam. Wanderlust is seeking investigators. Just think - we could be among the first to see it!" Clearly Davvyd wouldn't have to continue listing why they should go, as Fulsome was already scuffling around looking for his travel bag.

"Oh, just think about what could be out there! And if it hasn't spent years being picked over by treasure seekers! We'll need to be on our way right away!"

Davvyd nodded. "Exactly what I was thinking. I even made sure to get supplies together." He pointed his muzzle to the water gourds that hung all over him. Davvyd didn't want to waste time either. The more time went by the more adventurers would make their way out there, and the less impressive their trip would become.

Time in the Barrens seemed to drag on, endlessly. Putting on foot in front of another became almost impossible drudgery. But Fulsome knew it would be worth it. Finally, Mistfruit Forest was breaking over the horizon. As hot and tiring as this all was, soon Fulsome would be in a place presumably nearly undisturbed since the others departed. The thought of all the artifacts that were there for the finding was utterly thrilling! Thrilling enough for him to quicken his pace. Davvyd was already slightly ahead of him. The other buck was far more used to adventures, Fulsome supposed. He counted himself lucky to have Davvyd's friendship, the outgoing buck always had interesting things going on. Fulsome mostly had studying. And working. But times like this were a welcome distraction.

He quickly caught up to his friend. "Just ahead. How careful do you think we need to be?" Fulsome looked up at the taller buck, wondering exactly how much he knew about this place.

Davvyd just shrugged. "Can't be all that bad if Wanderlust is sending adventurers out. Wouldn't be a good look having a bunch of dead explorers on their hooves."

This caused Fulsome to side eye Davvyd, but he hoped his friend was just making a joke. They walked forward together in a companionable silence.

---

A few more hours of walking down, the trio reached the edge of Mistfruit. "I think I was expecting it to be more ... alive." The plants were just as dead as everywhere that wasn't Homewood, as far as Fulsome could tell. Davvyd just shrugged, taking it all in. "I guess I should be surprised. The others were here too, after all." Davvyd just nodded.

Each step took them deeper into the strange place. Despite it being day, Fulsome noticed that mist was already starting to cling to lower hollows. "Strange..." He walked on, through the seemingly ever present other based destruction. The mist seemed to even cling to his legs. And the land began to roll into a dip, and in the distance it rose again, into a gentle hill. "So different from the Barrens ..." Davvyd nodded. Distantly Fulsome could hear water. His ears perked. That could only mean one thing, the dam.

His pace picked up again, now leading Davvyd. Despite decreasing visibility, Fulsome walked faster and faster, breaking into a trot. He could hear Davvyd following behind at a slower pace, but Fulsome couldn't simply slow, he needed to reach the water as fast as possible. All was well until his foot contacted a slimy fallen log. He went down with a shrill scream, pain nearly blinding him.

Davvyd trailed after his friend, taking the strange place in. Cooler than the Barrens, certainly better smelling than the Bog, cleaner than the Ruins, this place wasn't all that bad. The damp mist was strange, but really, it was somewhat of a relief after the Barrens. He could even feel Golyath's growing comfort. Perhaps this was going to be an entirely pleasant adventure.

That thought was dashed as Fulsome's scream ripped through the calm. Golyath immediately took off and flapped forward to his friend. Davvyd picked up his pace, not looking forward to whatever scene awaited him ahead. The mist clung to his legs, making it hard to see any lurking obstacles. He wondered had befallen his friend.

Davvyd made is perhaps a score of steps ahead before coming upon Fulsome. His friend lay on the ground, writing in pain. One of his legs hung at a strange angle. Golyath flitted back to him. "Think one of those slimy logs got the better of him."

Davvyd nodded, unsurprised. But grateful that Grandfather Tree had given him just the right gift for a such a situation. "Well bud, you outta be more careful. But I can fix you up." He approached, and leaned down. Fulsome seemed to be in too much pain to really register the situation. Davvyd touched his friend's shoulder with his nose, and then closed his eyes. He reached within himself, searching for that spark of magic. He blocked out all his other senses, focusing on locating his magic. Ah, there is was. He reached for it, and channeled it down through himself and into his friend.

The magic felt warm, but it pulled on his own life force, requiring something in return. Energy. Davvyd pour out what he had to offer, feeling the healing magic search out the break, and then begin to mend it. Fulsome gasped deeply as the magic knit the bone back together. As quickly as the out pouring of magic had began, it ended. Its job had been completed, the bone knit together once more.

Fulsome let out a groan. Having such healing magic applied was also draining. At least that's what Davvyd had been taught in the few lessons he'd attended thus far. Fulsome rolled back to his belly, head hanging. "You gotta be more careful bud. I can't heal you like that again until I rest." Davvyd felt drained. Just saying the word rest made him crave it more. "Look, I think we'd better call if for the day. We can explore more tomorrow."

One second things had been going just fine, and then he'd been on the ground reeling in pain. Good thing for Davvyd. At the edge of exhaustion himself he looked around, wondering where they could shelter for the night. There was a nearby tree. Dead, of course, but it still had some branches on it. Good enough, as far as Fulsome was concerned. He staggered back to his feet and lurched over to it, before flopping down again. He shrugged out of his bag of supplies, and the water gourds he was carrying.

Davvyd followed him over, flopping down near him, leaning his back against the dead tree. Davvyd close his eyes, not even bothering to remove his packs. Golyath flitted down to his side, pulling open a supply bag and rooting around for something. It looked like a piece of dried fruit.

As Fulsome watched Golyath munch on the fruit as he struggled to get the cork free from the water gourd. He tipped it over, dumping it into the ground. Neither of his companions batted an eye. They were accustomed to his particular gift. He closed his eyes and easily reached for his magic. The water he poured out coursed through the ground, forming a little up welling, bubbling peacefully. "That'll taste much better than water that's been sitting in a gourd ..." He leaned forward and had a sip. Fulsome was now entirely too exhausted to do anything else. His eyes closed and he drifted off to an immediate sleep, dreaming about what they would find in this mysterious misty place tomorrow.
