Quote:
It was already late in the evening but the merchant seemed unfazed by the passing of time. He sat, poised and elegant, watching the world around him. He didn’t seem bored but he sat, fingers laced atop the table; below it, he kept his toe tapping to some silent tune in his head. He was tall, by human standards, though while sitting down he didn’t seem particularly threatening. If you didn’t look at his face.

He had graceful features--sharp and refined. His chin and nose tapered to a point, giving him an air of sophistication, but that, combined with his slitted eyes and pointed teeth, there was something undeniably predatory about him. He watched with a hungry gaze and a mischievous, nearly sinister smile. His ears were pointed and were prominent despite being tucked behind his vibrant, multi-colored hair. The most intrusive feature that indicated there was something not human about him were the curling horns protruding from his temples and the oil-slick black scales that brushed his cheeks and forehead. He was well dressed, in a fashion obviously otherworldly, and seemed to enjoy dressing himself up in glistening gemstones.

His stall was somehow both simple and overwhelming; it was only a table with a deep purple cloth over it, but scattered neatly atop it were an array of items that seemed to carry some magical weight to them.

He did not seem intimidated in the slightest and, upon noticing a customer approaching, he smiled.

He did not rise to meet them nor adjust his position in the slightest. He followed them with his fierce eyes.

In a silky voice, he greeted, “Welcome.”

Paracelsian thought he felt a big Order Senshi aura show up somewhere in the distance, and then recede. Though it was probably ill-advised, he decided to track the aura anyway, at least for the opportunity to see who was on the other side. As he advanced, a different, small sort of aura made its way to his senses. He had no idea what it was, but it was different, all right. Soon enough, he happened upon the source: a very strange man sitting at a table with numerous items strewn about. He didn't feel like a half youma, so what the heck was he?

There was little time to puzzle that out before he was greeted. It was only polite to greet him back. "Oh, hello," Paracelsian said back. "Are these souvenirs?" That made them sound tackier and cheaper than they were, but what else would this guy be selling?

“Mm. For some, I suppose. For me, they are simply wares.” There was something somewhat misleading in his answer, like he might not have been telling the complete truth. “for it to be a souvenir it must be a memento of some sort, no? I don’t suppose you would call a museum’s displays ‘souvenirs’. But, by all means. If you wish to take one to remember meeting me, I am prepared to trade for them. Is there something here that catches your interest?”

He gestured to his display with acquired elegance. “I have many things. Weapons, jewelry, fashion. You seem like a fashionable gentleman,” he mused, and reached almost absentmindedly to lift a beautiful, albeit somewhat aged, face veil. The fabric was sheer and easy to see through, and though the color seemed a bit less vibrant than it deserved, the metallic adornments on the piece were still stunning. Intricately carved beads dangled, and a few thin medallions, some carved faintly with the symbol of Uranus, made a beautiful, tinkling noise as it was moved.

Paracelsian let the semantics of what these goods were drift away from the conversation. The mention of trading caught his attention, and the item the merchant pointed out secured that focus. Something about that veil intrigued him deeply, not the least of which was the question of why this man had a Uranus Knight's veil on him.

A certain lieutenant he'd met had a thing for collecting trophies. Maybe he could start a collection, too. Alternately, the veil could potentially replace his scarf. He was getting a bit tired of that thing.

"Before I go any further, I'd like to know what you are looking for in trade. There isn't much point in me looking around if I don't have what you want, is there?"

"Oh, I suppose," he answered honestly, but there was something else teasing behind his words. "But then, if you find something you really like, eventually there's nothing you wouldn't trade to get it. A cruel merchant would demand you show payment before you even know what he has to offer. But, now you can see what I have," he gestured again to the table.

"In exchange, I want something small. Something lovely. Rare. A gemstone of an item. If we're being particular, I'm looking for something you might have found on the ground, recently. It would look like a cut gemstone. I don't suppose you've come across any of these just lying around recently, no?"

He sounded hopeful, with barely masqueraded enthusiasm.

"I suppose you're right," Paracelsian murmured in response to the part about people willing to trade anything for something they truly wanted. People were selfish in that regard, going on quests for glory or power or items with no regard for the cost. However, after the rather detailed mention of what the merchant was looking for in payment, he promptly began fishing around in his subspace pocket. "How very specific. It sounds an awful lot like..." He pulled the glittery star piece out at last and held it out to the merchant. "This, perhaps?"

A suspicion clicked into place in Paracelsian's mind that maybe the merchant had hidden these pieces in weird places on purpose, just for people to find and trade with him. He didn't voice it, but he didn't put the possibility past the merchant as a possible eccentricity.

The merchant's eyes flashed and the smile on his face curled just slightly upwards. "I find that an acute description also yields better results. And so, yes. I am looking for something exactly like that. Useless to you," he insisted.

"But so very pretty. I'm willing to part with many of my treasures," he hummed. "Things that would serve you far better than any gemstone would. It's a wise trade. You must see something on my table you're interested in," he suggested, eyes moving from Paracelsian to the veil, and back again.

Paracelsian gave a short chuckle. "Very well then. I'll give you this shining piece for... that veil you were showing off." This guy was definitely kind of like Nambulite, with the obnoxious crowing substituted with cryptic charm. Birds of a feather, maybe. He set the sparkling stone down on the table, and held his hand out for the veil in exchange. He was already trying to puzzle out who it might belong to and how it came into be in this stranger's possession, and he was itching to check the Negaverse database for any matches.

The swap was rapid and instantaneous; the man took the little gem and offered the veil with a very pleased smile.

Excellent choice, my friend. I dare say, you’ve certainly gotten the better deal out of this trade, but, ah, in times of desperation I suppose one can’t be too picky. And I am quite happy to clear out some of my stock. It’s gotten so heavy to carry around,” he sighed, but his mood was hardly soured.

“You’ll have to come back if you find more, won’t you? I’ll be here for a bit longer.”

"You think so?" Paracelsian took the veil and gave it a quick looking-over. Faded though it was, it was in Uranus Knight colors and had the symbol on it. He really wanted to do some database diving and see if he could track the veil's path to the merchant at all. Perhaps some Negaverse agent had grabbed it at one point and lost it?

In any case, he pocketed the veil and nodded to the merchant. "I'll look into it. Thank you for your business." He took the opportunity there to take his leave, speculating on the mystery of the veil all the while.
