Once upon a time, there was a royal family that ruled over Morishita.
Of course, all good things must come to an end, and one day, the royal family was deposed and relieved of their ‘duties’. Nobody really could remember why, or the full details- sometimes, people simply just got tired of being ruled over and wanted change, after all- but the fact was that Morishita went from being a monarchy to a democracy… somewhat. The role of Sailor Morishita, usually a role taken on by the heir to the throne, was left vacant for some time, though Morishita was a peaceful world, and thus, they had no need for their planet’s protector, as the role was largely ceremonial anyway.
Well, there was no need at first. As time went on, hostilities with other planets, as well as increasing threats from other parts of the galaxy made themselves known, and a council was ultimately formed to make a decision as to form a council that would choose who the next Sailor Morishita would be. Although they weren’t traditionally needed in those days, a guardian cat was brought in from offworld anyway, hired to be part of the council that would help determine worthy candidates. This worked out well enough, and once more, Morishita was at peace, with no need for their senshi, which came at a convenient time, seeing as their last senshi had mysteriously gone AWOL.
For some odd years after, the council largely served as a governmental body, without a senshi to appoint, passing new laws and overseeing the night markets that Morishita was famous for. The guardian cat, with no real other business, stayed on for a while, before eventually retiring. This left Morishita without both a senshi and a cat, but it wasn’t really like they actually needed them, right? That was what the council thought, anyway, seeing as things were going so well.
Hilariously and unsurprisingly, threats reared their ugly head once more, so the council scrambled to hire a new guardian cat, to look for a new senshi. Although previously, they had lowered the bar when it came to their criteria for choosing Sailor Morishita, the council pondered if, perhaps, they should start looking for possible descendants of the royal family… not that anyone could remember if any of the former royal family had been simply exiled or if they had all been executed… Either way, Runelucia, a Mauvian who had previously been aspiring to be a stage girl in the academy in the far off wonder of Aogashima, had been taken on as part of the council, to help with this matter. In no time flat, it wasn’t long before they had their first (and only) candidate.
Xochitl was but a humble merchant… or so she claimed. Almost seemingly overnight, she had dominated the markets of Morishita, gaining a monopoly over the other merchants with her stall of assorted wares, that were, according to her, rare and exotic items from other places across the galaxy, some of which she had taken ‘great pains’ to acquire. Her origins and motivations were unknown, or at least, she preferred not to disclose them, keeping an air of mystery to her.
That all changed, though, once she caught wind of the fact that the council was searching for the next Sailor Morishita.
With no warning, or any prompting, Xochitl had appeared before the council, after rumors surfaced that she may be a long lost descendant to the former Morishita throne. It had been so long that nobody could truly fact check her claims, and so, the council had turned to Runelucia to be the ultimate judge. If anyone could verify her claims, it’d be the cat in service to the world, right?
Perhaps they shouldn’t have put too much trust into such an overly trusting cat. Xochitl did seem to know things nobody else did, though, and without anyone who had been alive long enough to fact check her, it was easy enough to believe that there perhaps was truth to her words. She had already made a name for herself as a merchant, and there hadn’t really been any complaints about her business, other than perhaps the unfairness of her driving out some of the smaller merchants, so there was no reason to believe that, given nobody knew anything else about her, that she could be a claimant to the throne, right?
And thus, was the next (and last) Sailor Morishita chosen.
