Quote:
It was already late in the evening but the merchant seemed unfazed by the passing of time. He sat, poised and elegant, watching the world around him. He didn’t seem bored but he sat, fingers laced atop the table; below it, he kept his toe tapping to some silent tune in his head. He was tall, by human standards, though while sitting down he didn’t seem particularly threatening. If you didn’t look at his face.

He had graceful features--sharp and refined. His chin and nose tapered to a point, giving him an air of sophistication, but that, combined with his slitted eyes and pointed teeth, there was something undeniably predatory about him. He watched with a hungry gaze and a mischievous, nearly sinister smile. His ears were pointed and were prominent despite being tucked behind his vibrant, multi-colored hair. The most intrusive feature that indicated there was something not human about him were the curling horns protruding from his temples and the oil-slick black scales that brushed his cheeks and forehead. He was well dressed, in a fashion obviously otherworldly, and seemed to enjoy dressing himself up in glistening gemstones.

His stall was somehow both simple and overwhelming; it was only a table with a deep purple cloth over it, but scattered neatly atop it were an array of items that seemed to carry some magical weight to them.

He did not seem intimidated in the slightest and, upon noticing a customer approaching, he smiled.

He did not rise to meet them nor adjust his position in the slightest. He followed them with his fierce eyes.

In a silky voice, he greeted, “Welcome.”

Of all the many strange things Aokigahara had experienced in Destiny City, a genuine alien was a surprise.

Perhaps he shouldn't have been. Aokigahara had known Caedus, even if only briefly; they'd never had a chance to speak one on one, but it had been clear the stranger who helped them enter the Negaverse wasn't human. Still, it was odd to see one sitting so openly, looking completely unaffected by the possibility of any kind of discovery or anything else.

Then again, someone who had traversed the universe this far was probably fairly brave.

"Hello," Aokigahara said, letting his eyes wander over the goods on display on the table. "Quite the selection you have," he said, idly. No need to betray too much interest. This was likely to be a negotiation, of sorts.

“Thank you, little Knight. I’m quite fond of it, myself. Go ahead, feel free to take a look. You can touch them, they won’t bite. Mostly. Just don’t break them, or I’ll have to take it out of your hide.” He laughed, pleasantly, like it was a joke--but his open mouth only revealed sharp teeth and a black, snakelike, forked tongue. There was something almost sinister about it, but he seemed in good spirits all the same.

“Come,” he beckoned him closer. “What are you in the market for. Jewelry? Weapons?” He paused and glanced at a pretty paper lantern that was already glowing faintly in the night. “Something to chase away the monsters in the night? --I’ll part with any of these things, if only you’ve brought me something worthwhile to trade.”

"Oh, I promise, I'll be very careful," Aokigahara said idly. It was the lantern that drew his eye, though; it shed a familiar purple glow, and he felt pulled to it. He tilted his head, and moved towards it, very carefully turning it around to examine.

"I think I could make quite good use of a light in the dark," he said, idly. Perhaps it might even be useful specifically on his Wonder--there were rituals about lamps lit for the dead to send them to rest, and perhaps something like that might ease whatever was haunting his Wonder.

"Is there anything in particular you look for? I'd hate to insult you with a poor offer for such a fine thing."

"Oh, I take all offers. You're a Knight, I'm certain you have something interesting to offer. I want something unique. Although, I'd settle for something shiny. I don't suppose you've found anything around here on Earth recently, have you?" He tried not to sound too interested, but the deception was short lived.

"It would look like a shiny little gem. Uncut, unpolished. Not something you can make use of. But lovely, all the same? That's what I'm looking for. But again. I'll consider all offers, if you've got anything hidden in your pockets."

"I believe I do know exactly what you're talking about," Aokigahara said, and he reached into his jacket pocket, producing the glimmering stone he'd found. "Is this it?" He asked, offering it over. It certainly fit the description he'd been given, and he couldn't think of anything else he could offer. Not that he had on-hand, at least.

How fortuitous. It had been smart of him to keep it, even if he couldn't have known how it would come in handy.

"I'd be happy to trade you this for the lantern."

The merchant's eyes lit up eagerly and he nodded, eyes locked onto the little crystal.

"That's it, exactly. Yes." He held out his hand and scooped the lantern into his hand, pushing it closer. "An excellent trade, then. It'll be in safer hands. It's a little fragile so don't go throwing it around. I was worried I'd damage it with all of my moving around, so I'm pleased to see it off to a good home. May it light your way in times of darkness."

Aokigahara gave a polite bow of thanks. Always best to respect those you made deals with,m especially if you might have occasion to deal with them again--not that he foresaw that happening, necessarily, but one never knew, really. And there was nothing to be lost in being polite and respectful to an alien, who might carry word of his conduct to others of his kind.

"A pleasure doing business with you," he said, and he carefully lifted the lantern from the table. A fragile thing indeed. "And I promise to be very careful with it. No sense in letting something so lovely get damaged." Not when he suspected he had given up something quite valuable for it, even if he didn't have any particular personal use for the strange star-shard.

He gave a brief nod as he turned away, examining the piece in detail. Yes, this felt right. Like the thing he needed to bring with him to his Wonder, next time he went. Perhaps he could begin to settle whatever had been rising there; something to guide the dead back to their rest.
