The Mysterious Figure
The City has been lit up for the Star Festival with banners and twinkling decorations strewn off the windowsills of shop fronts and windows. The gardeners at one particular park have put their heart and soul into creating a fairy's paradise: Fairy lights have been carefully dangled from trees to make strings of stars, little beaded jewels have been hidden among the hedges, and even the old cobwebs have been sprayed with just a touch of glitter. The park is open to everyone and the citizens of Destiny City have been invited to respectfully explore the hidden wonders that have been placed throughout. The park is magical enough on its own but there have also been reports of a strange, ethereal and shimmering stranger in the park. The glimmer of a beautiful costumed figure fluttering through the park has been passed around as rumor, and no matter what anyone claims to see, no one can take a picture of it. As if simply seeing some magical figure isn’t mysterious enough, there are also reports of mischief and small pranks being played at the same time this figure seems to appear.

Having gotten no further in his investigation in to what the entity was, the senshi had taken to at least trying to find out who or what it was. Alternatively if this was to become an impossibility, then at the very least he sought to find its purpose. Ever since the last time he'd encountered it and be led towards the fountain, he hadn't quite been able to shift the feeling that something might legitimately be in the park. That laughter had followed him all evening after he'd rang that bell after all, and while nothing had happened to him that he could see, that didn't mean that he hadn't gotten off scott free.

The rumour-mill had been active around this particular figure though, even if it hadn't been particularly nefarious it had its fans and its conspiracy theories. At least he had company in the sense that others had seen it (and continued to see it), now he just wanted to take that one step further and work out what it was trying to do.

He was ignoring the fact that others had wagged their fingers and said that there were just some things the senshi weren't meant to know. They might feel that way, but until he came up empty handed, he wasn't going to stop trying at the very least.

Thus, the senshi now found himself in the park, leaning against a flickering lamp post that happened to be in dire need of a change in light bulb. It suited his needs though, he didn't stand out quite so much in the dimmer lighting and it afforded him enough luminescence to work with. He could make out others meandering about in the distance, most of them taking their leave for the evening as the dark really began to set in... But it left the rest of the park dark enough for him to spot that familiar entity if it happened to flit passed again.

...All he had to do was watch and wait.

All of Sylvite's personal notes about Order were written in color coded gel pen and then slipped into a sparkly blue folder. Stuff about the Negaverse ended up in a sparkly pink one. Two Christmases ago, she'd started a third folder. It was very cute and flower themed, but it only had one paper in it. It talked about snow fairies in swirly purple handwriting. There wasn't too much information about them. They'd flown around her and her mission partner for a while. That was about it. There was still a speculative paragraph at the bottom about how there had to be more magic out there than just what people saw in the war. This was obviously a hint of something way bigger.

Then, there was the last line: People probably don't talk about outside magic too much because it's super, super sporadic.

There had been no more fairies. She'd been looking, but the trail had gone totally cold.

The trail had gone totally cold until it hadn't. All the sudden people were talking about fairies again, and Sylvite was not about to let this opportunity to learn more slip through her fingers. People had apparently been seeing them in this garden in the middle of the star festival. It actually kinda matched up. The last time she'd seen them had been around the holidays, so maybe these fairies just really liked to party?

She was getting all ready to make a note of that in her tablet when she got to the edge of the garden and felt an Order aura. Really? Were people thinking that senshi were fairies now? With a heavy sigh, she started making her way in that direction. That was when she saw him.

She did a double take, but yeah, it was him. Athalia. The brainwashed newbie, but also the last person on Earth anyone would think was a fairy unless they were extra dumb. Maybe there was still something else going on? That was tonight's mystery.

"How now, spirit," she said in a very annoyed tone that was definitely not what Shakespeare had intended.

The man couldn't help but crack a smile at the tone he was greeted with. He certainly recognised the voice from before, it had been the Chaos agent he'd met before. Of all the people he expected to run in to this evening she hadn't necessarily been at the top of his list, but he did at least glance towards her and lift a brow.

"Ah, the ray of sunshine," he replied. He didn't sound quite as annoyed as her, if anything he seemed neutral? He had certainly been preoccupied when she arrived, enough for him to have not noticed her as quickly as he should have. Whatever the case may be, with only himself around he certainly didn't seem overly concerned that she was here, in fact he didn't seem hostile at all.

"And what brings you out to this neck of the woods this evening?" he asked curiously, turning his gaze back towards the darker region of the park. He'd only been here a short while and he did have to wonder if their voices might disturb whatever was here, but given it had ignored him completely the last time he had reason to doubt that it would care about any conversation that may occur in its immediate vicinity.

Idle conversation, pleasant and polite, but still idle.

Despite the newfound company he definitely seemed intent on keeping his gaze fixed elsewhere though, whatever he was looking for didn't appear to have made itself known yet.

Sylvite's expression went even more sour for a second. She really considered him, scrunching her nose and mouth up tight, and then with a tiny nod she let it go. "Yeah. That's me," she said, throwing up a peace sign.

At least he wasn't trying to fight anything right now, or trying to tell her what to do, or even being loudly misinformed. She couldn't really be mad about anything he was doing. Anyway, there were things she was more interested in right now. When he turned to look deeper into the trees, she followed his gaze.

Between the lamp post that kept getting all dim and then bright again, and the fairy lights that were strung up everywhere, the garden was a mess of light and shadow. Whoever had designed this had done a good job with the mysterious, otherwordly vibe, but the result was that it was pretty hard to make out any details. She didn't think he'd found anything, but it was hard to be sure.

"Don't worry," she said. "I'm not doing any Negaverse stuff." There might have been some energy stuffed in her shorts, but she didn't feel the need to bring it up. It wasn't like she'd been going out to drain, it was just a habit now to take a little bit from anyone she came across.

"I'm looking for fairies." She squinted a little harder, like that would help clarify things.

She suited a more pleasant and relaxed demeanour, if he mentioned that though it was bound to be received poorly. Instead, he tilted his head towards her as she spoke and reassured him of her intentions. He would at least accept that on this occasion her intentions were harmless enough, he'd heard more than once that during these times it wasn't just the Order who were subject to the machinations of the otherworldly.

...Truth be told, now wasn't the ideal time to be fighting, just in case something intervened and did something inconvenient for either of them.

Nevertheless when she had finished his eyebrow did rise ever so slightly, her reference to fairies had piqued his interest and he readjusted his position so his posture wasn't quite so stiff against the lamp post. Much like her he found himself partially squinting in to the distance but he did have faith this thing would show up again. The rumours remained a constant which did mean it was still around, it just required a measure of patience.

"Then it appears we're looking for the same thing," he mused, a hint of a smile on his lips.

"Although I'm not entirely convinced this one actually does anything," he admitted. He was obviously referring to whatever he might have seen previously, whether everyone's accounts differed in terms of their own personal experiences, was a complete unknown to him.

"But -" he turned his gaze back towards her, rolling his shoulders in a casual shrug. "I figured it would be worth a look."

Sylvite raised an eyebrow. "Wait, really?"

Mister no-nonsense, senshi-as-in-soldier, was out looking for fairies? She guessed that made more sense than him just being out here to enjoy the garden in uniform, but still.

"I was worried when I felt you here that there were just senshi patrolling here and people were thinking you guys were fairies, because sparkles," she said, looking back over and edging closer than she'd gotten during their other talk. She was almost to a regular conversation distance, although she was staring at him a little hard for someone just wanting to chat. If he tried anything, she was ready to pull her knives, but she didn’t want that. She wanted to hear what he had to say. “Do you think it’s the real deal?”

She was still looking at the park, although now she was looking at the display just past Athalia. It was some kind of crystal art installation with glowy lights. It looked like the kind of fairyland from kids books, or maybe the new Disney movies. “What do you think they’re supposed to do?” she asked. “Steal your babies and curdle your milk?” This cutesy garden didn’t look like it would be attracting anything like that. “Cure your warts?”

Yeah, she might have read a bunch of fairy books back in middle school.

She shook her head. “I don’t care if they do any of that stuff, as long as they’re cool, y’know.” She was really smiling now. It was clear any fairy that showed up would be cool in her book.

"Yes, really," he confirmed.

He afforded a quick look towards himself as she made reference to sparkles though. Did he sparkle and he just couldn't see it? He hadn't recalled Cybele or Kami sparkling during their encounters so he thought it best to assume she was referring to how flamboyant some of them could look. Being honest, he probably looked fairly poofy himself in his 'skirt' as his new-found companion had deemed to refer to it once.

"I'm not sure what it is," He looked back towards her and shrugged. "What I do know is that they aren't imagining things, I've seen it too," he confirmed. It was all well and good to assume that the excitement and festivities had gotten to people, in fact before all of this he probably would have assumed that was what had happened, but now that he was this he believed it.

"As to what it's supposed to do -" He chuckled and raised his foot.

"First of all, I'm clean in that respect but there is probably a market for that," he acknowledged. "But rumour has it if you tick off a fairy in places like Sweden you might find yourself stabbed in the back," he pointed out.

"I'd rather it didn't get offended by someone and lead them to their unfortunate demise," he mused.

"The one I saw though...It did look fairly pretty though, if that's your thing?"

Sylvite shrugged, and although she still wasn't looking at him, she was definitely smirking. "Well, y'know," she said. "I mean, they'd probably get a lot of people coming to look for them. Dermatologists are expensive."

She talked like she knew what she was talking about, and she rubbed a thumb over her wrist again. It wasn't warts, but she could feel the bumps, even through the fabric.

"You said you saw them before?" Here?" She did look back over to him, her eyes a little bigger this time. She tilted her head, trying to decided if fairy stuff counted as important Negaverse information. Nobody else seemed to really care about it, so it was probably fine.

"I saw some a couple years ago at a winter festival thing," she said. "Those were probably, like, Tinker Bell level. They'd pull your hair, but they wouldn't do any of the really nasty unseelie stuff." She went back to her search of the garden. "And yeah, they were really pretty!"

Let him think she just cared about pretty stuff. That was fine. "I mostly wanna see if this is the same thing, or something else."

"I'll take your word for it on that one," He conceded. When it came to skincare he wasn't schooled at it in the slightest and the concept of cost would have been lost on him. Truth be told he mostly just thought of dermatologists as the people with the face creams, they certainly did far more, but in the grand scheme of things he'd only been exposed to the 'beauty' element of the equation.

"But yes," he finally motioned towards the woodland area and clucked his tongue. "I can't speak for anyone else but it always seems to come out from there for me," he seemed perfectly willing to discuss the supernatural on this occasion. Given that it seemed neither order nor chaos (it didn't seem to radiate with anything), catching sight of it or at least sharing some measure of knowledge about it didn't seem to pose many risks.

...If it ended up in a different location if she followed it though, he'd be impressed.

"Normally around the same time each evening, follows the same path," he shook his head and flicked his gaze back to the agent. He soon folded his arms against his chest and pursed his lips thoughtfully. "Always ends up disappearing in the same spot too," he continued.

"I've only gotten fairly close to it once though and it didn't seem like it was alone," he added. He vividly recalled the jingling of little bells, the giggles and on occasions the nips around his ears and ankles as if he'd been pinched. The bushes has rustled and a breeze had whispered against his cheeks, but in the end he hadn't be left any worse for wear.

"Couldn't see what might be with it though," he finished.

"If you can work that one out I'd be curious to find out who its friends might be."

When Athalia started to talk about the habits of this fairy creature, Sylvite raised an eyebrow. When he kept talking and talking, she felt herself starting to stare and so she made herself turn away and stare in the other direction instead, pretending to get really distracted with fixing her headband.

She didn't know which way to think about this. Like, there was someone else who was researching these fairy things. Her poor flower notebook wouldn't be alone anymore. It seemed like Athalia was pretty committed, too, if he'd been coming out every night to get a look at this creature. She wanted to turn back around and grin and ask him if he knew anything else cool about fairies.

The thing was, it wasn't cool. He wasn't cool. He was a gross senshi who killed things, who would probably kill people given half a chance, who thought the Negaverse deserved whatever happened to them. He was awful and terrible and also he knew more than her about fairies apparently.

She finished with the headband, narrowed her eyes, and started rubbing and rubbing a pretend spot out of her glove, hard.

That was when she saw it. There was something, or maybe someone, walking down the path several yards away from her. It was definitely pretty, and it shimmered, but it was hard to tell any more detail than that. "Woah," she whispered, going still again.

She glanced back over. "Is that it?" If so, it was nothing like the fairies she'd seen before. She wasn't sure if it even counted as a fairy. "Also, what do you mean, not alone?"

On cue, she felt something tugging on her just-straightened bow.

Right on time, Athalia would have been impressed with himself if it wasn't for the fact he had been out here so regularly and had been staring at the same area almost every evening. By now this was simply routine for him and if he hadn't gotten semi-decent at timing the creature's arrival then there would have been no hope for him.

"That's it," he confirmed and sure enough, while the 'company' wasn't quite so much for him at this distance, he felt the familiar tugging against his forehead. Whomever or whatever was in front of him always seemed quite insisting on getting his tiara off. Evidently it was too heavy for them but he certainly couldn't blame them for trying, if they could get it off it would be a much more impressive treasure.

He remained unaware that she might have her own little visitor though.

"Oh you'll know what I mean when it happens," he smiled wryly and nodded towards the creature. "But it's much easier to notice them when you're close," he pointed out.

"Care to follow?"

Maybe the fairy would change course this evening, with another person in his company the variable might result in something different, it was an option he would have liked to explore if he was given the opportunity to do so. Alternatively it might end up exactly where it usually went but at least he'd have given it a go!

Sylvite eyed the figure, not quite convinced. "Are we sure it's a fairy?" she asked. Yeah, sure, it was super shimmery, and it maybe had wings, although even that took some squinting and imagination, but it didn't look much like the things she'd seen before. "I feel like if it was Halloween everybody would be saying it's a ghost!"

Not that she had a problem with ghosts, but they weren't anywhere close to as cool.

Whatever was tugging on her clothes had caught her attention for the moment, and she kept glancing up every time she felt another tug on her headband. Something had decided to go for the buttons on her boots, too, which should have been easier to see, but when she looked down there was still nothing there. See, that seemed like the kind of thing that fairies did.

She got so distracted looking for them that she almost missed when Athalia started after the figure. "I'm coming, I'm coming," she said, breaking into a jog to catch up with him. She took another look at the figure but it still mostly seemed to just be walking.

She gave Athalia a sideways glance, still not sure how she felt about all this, but eventually she asked, "So, uh, how does this thing usually stay around for?"

A swat of his hand towards his forehead made it apparent she wasn't the only one with company and he shook his head at her questions. Was he sure it was a fairy? Not particularly, he hadn't even believed in magic until a few months ago if he was being entirely honest. He'd been a simple guy back then, he had a career, he lived his life and that was that. Fairies, demons, magic and so on had all been children's tales and fanciful dreams to him.

"I don't know," he admitted. "But that's what everyone else has been calling it and I'm not necessarily an expert on fairies, ghosts or anything else entirely supernatural," he added. He might be full of himself to others but he did appear to be capable of acknowledging that he wasn't an expert on some things. A point for him perhaps, even if it only turned out to be a fraction of one!

"However do ghosts often bring friends?" he gave another swat. "You have studied these far more than I have," he pointed out.

...Though in regards to how long the entity stayed around for.

"Not long for me," he pointed towards a distant set up of hedgerows, one of the fountains sat behind it. "It always seems to head over there for me when I'm on my own," he continued and raised both eyebrows, a wry smile on his lips.

"Perhaps they will change their minds this evening if their company differs?" he mused.

Truth be told that was his hope, otherwise he was beginning to thing that this was something akin to an echo or memory that simply replayed itself each evening for him.

When a few of the threads holding her button on started to get pulled out by whatever the little thing was, Sylvite reached down to try to brush it off. She didn't feel anything there, either. Would that be a ghost thing?

"Like, prank friends? Uh, poltergeists," she mumbled, but she didn't sound nearly as confident about that one. She'd read some ghost stories, too, but they weren't as much of her thing. She pressed her lips together. "Although I might have seen a ghost a couple days ago and I don't think that one had any friends."

It had also been more of a weird house and less of a floaty figure, so it didn't really clarify things. Sylvite shrugged. "Even with all the magic in this city, the more spirit-y, cryptid type things are still super hard to follow up on. They don't really stick around."

She'd been staying half a step behind Athalia until he said something about the fairy having a set path. She grinned at that. "You think I can get it to move?"

She might have been putting words in his mouth, but she didn't stick around to get corrected. It was basically an experiment, and she those were always fun.

"Hey, faaairy!"

She took off at her full Captain sprint, ducking under branches and leaping over flowerbeds and trying to cut off its path to the hedge.

She was off like a shot; even if he'd wanted to provide a reply he wouldn't have had the opportunity. When she wanted to move she really moved and he paused momentarily to watch as she closed the distance between herself and the entity. She was certainly determined, he'd give her that, but he couldn't judge her for it given he was essentially doing something very similar... the only difference was that he didn't have a notebook.

She also seemed to have another point, a direct reference to the city's magic and how more often than not, getting to the source of it proved difficult. That didn't deter him though, in the end he would have liked to overcome this challenge and identify whatever may have been behind some of the more impish or questionable events that happened during certain periods.

Curious as to whether or not she would succeed in gaining the entity's attention though, he followed quietly behind her and at a slight distance just to see if it would change direction if he wasn't there. He'd let her take the lead on this one and learn from whatever results she managed to achieve.

If anyone was going to be able to change the result then it might very well be Sylvite.
