Strange things appear in Destiny City all the time, so nothing seems out of the ordinary about what might look like discarded trash, broken glass, or pieces of broken jewelry. If anyone were to lean in for a closer inspection, they might find a beautiful, gemstone like object that is shaped a bit like a star. They come in an array of colors and almost seem to have some sort of light sparkling in them.

Kalani didn’t normally go looking for things on the ground, but after that one time one year where she found a lost wallet on the ground, she couldn’t help but occasionally keep an eye out in case fortune struck twice. This time around, Rune wasn’t with her to attempt to be some kind of moral compass, not that she had managed to sway Lani’s decision in the end, thanks to some quick thinking to appeal to the little cat’s love of idols. If there was one thing Kalani didn’t believe in, it was karma, at least when it applied to her, anyway- not that the wallet had had any identifying information to begin with, thus ensuring that the money within surely would have gone to waste had she not discovered it.

The star festival was underway, which Lani was mostly uninterested in outside of the free stuff she could get out of it. While she wasn’t really one for little knick knacks like keychains, one of the things she had acquired was a crimson star charm, given out at one of the vendor stalls she had dropped by while on her free food sampling binge. Stars weren’t really her thing, except for, like, some really vague connection to some of her gacha games and rarity or power, but it was red, and it made her think of the star on Rune’s head, so… well, she would just make up a story about having bought it at a shop, and gift it to the little Mauvian. If she worded things right, maybe said a word or two about how it reminded her of her favorite guardian cat in all of Destiny City, Rune would believe her tale and not think to question the charm’s true origins.

(Kalani wasn’t truly a generous person, but she knew how to frame things with the right words to make herself look as such.)

Fortunately, Kalani didn’t have to wait much longer to find something unusual, as fortune favored the bold once more… or something like that. Disappointingly enough, it wasn’t another wallet, or even just some loose change in general, but a strange… stone? Frowning, Kalani decided to pick it up, against better judgement, to get a better look. Well, holding it up to the light, it seemed to give off a slight sparkle, so maybe it wasn’t just some fancy-looking rock. It was shaped a bit like a star, so maybe it came off a piece of jewelry, such as an earring? As interested in fashion as Lani was, she wasn’t exactly an expert in matters of gemstones and their authenticity, but, perhaps, she could take this to a jeweler, and get it appraised. With any luck, it would turn out to be really valuable, and she could pawn it off somewhere to make a quick buck or hundred.

Or, maybe, even a few thousand dollars. Lani, at the very least, knew that some gems could run for pretty good prices, and this thing seemed like it could be rare enough, or at least, maybe she could sucker someone into believing it was rare enough, anyway. Now, she just needed to make sure Rune didn’t find out about this...
