Quote: The Charity Benefit (1) - A number of the local businesses in the area have come together to organise a charity benefit. In addition to a silent auction, there is also an evening charity ball. The community has been wanting to raise funds to fix up a few public areas for some time now and in the spirit of the Star Festival, these businesses have donated several prizes to the event to encourage people to attend. As one of the local residents you have been kindly invited to attend! Formal attire is encouraged but only required if you plan to attend the Ball. Duncan couldn't believe he was dressed up in a suit tonight, at this ball, and really having no idea what to do. The higher-ups at his workplace wanted someone to attend to give the lake some publicity but Duncan had wondered if they were getting some sort of benefit from this. And unfortunately he had been voluntold to do so, mostly because they knew of his part-time work and thought he would be good for "attracting" attention. He knew they had donated a prize, a surfboard, but really, it's not like he was going to bid on it! So here he was, keeping a glass of one with one sip from it in one hand and leaning on a column as he watched everyone around him. He had yet to spot someone that he knew which meant that he would have to... talk to people. Sure, he talked to his friends quite a bit, but now that it was summer again and he was in full-time "lifeguard" mode, he was back to being his blunt, moody, non-talkative self. Being powered had changed that a bit. He felt that he often talked to fellow Order and even Agents more than he did while he was a civilian, but part of that was nervousness. And feeling quite powerless as well considering his confrontations with that General and Captain. And that Youma. He sighed and took another small sip of his wine, wondering if he could sneak out of here early...

Even though the dress Sadie was currently wearing was much simpler than her Squire gown, it was far itchier. It was dusty pink, with a little lace detailing on the top and a full tulle skirt. Her hair was pulled into a updo that straddled the line between summery and elaborate. She was even wearing a thick layer of makeup. It did help some with the scars, but it felt heavy on her skin, and it was a little itchy, too. This was not her doing. Her family was generally not flashy with their money. She was spared the extravagant weekly parties that some of her cousins had to deal with, but there were times when she found herself forced to dip her toes into the world of being a socialite. Local charity events were just the kind of thing her parents loved, although Sadie could not help but notice that they had not loved it enough to show up themselves. Her youngest sister, who true as truly loved these dazzling events, had been sent to present a pricey antique tea set on behalf of her mother's bank, and Sadie had been asked to come with her. She had not said no. The afternoon had been lovely enough, with the dressing up and all, but of course once they'd gotten there, her sister had vanished into a little crowd, smiling and laughing, and Sadie had found herself alone. She could manage that, too, even if it wasn't quite as nice. After a pass by the snack and drink table, she made her way to the side of the room, ready to watch people for a few hours. It was a surprise when the first person she saw was someone she recognized. He looked different in a suit, but not so different, and she walked over to him with a soft smile. "Um, hi," she said. "Duncan, right?"

Duncan hadn't been expecting to be addressed so when he was, he jumped a little, almost spilling his glass a bit. Somehow it managed to stay but he did send it a glare for a second. Looking over at who had addressed him, he was pretty sure it was... "Sadie?" He almost whispered, though he was sure it came out loud enough. She looked different, at least compared to being in the rain. The last time they had met as civilians she had stayed overnight at his apartment to get some energy back after falling into that black-hole that was a puddle. He nodded to her. "Yes... didn't expect to see you here. Though it's not like I usually go to these things." He said as he shrugged, knowing that he looked a bit awkward. "Got voluntold to unofficially represent the company that manages the resevoir since they donated a surfboard for auction." He thought it looked rather ugly himself. "What uh, brings you here?" He wasn't good at small talk. Though if he felt more comfortable and there was more to say he could do it, but starting it was always a bit uncomfortable for him.

Oh, good. He recognized her. The careful, formal event smile softened. "Yeah. It's Sadie. Hi." This was someone who had who had already helped her once. She didn't have to stumble over any introductions. "I'm here to present something for my mom's bank. Well, my sister is. I'm moral support, maybe?" The crowds parted in just the right way to give Sadie a glimpse of her sister, who seemed to be leaning against a boy and giggling. That had been fast. "Not that she needs it." Duncan was pressed nearly flat against the wall, and talking in an odd prickly tone about his company. Maybe he could use the support a bit more. "Do you not like formals?" asked Sadie, tilting her head. "Well, the clothes are a little itchy, and the people can be too much sometimes, especially if you run into someone who knows you just well enough to ask about your future until you feel like a bug pressed between microscope slides," she said. She presented her little saucer of snacks to him like she was a waitress and said, "But the food is almost always good." At the moment she had some little star-shaped quiches and some fruity sweets.

Duncan realized that he had been talking to her a bit tersly and blushed looking away. "You could say that. Not really used to talking to people mostly. I do more when I'm nervous or new to something, but usually I keep quiet and to myself." He turned to look at her and gave her a small smile. "Have to keep that voice ready for yelling at people not to run around the beach or going into the clearly marked off areas you know?" It wasn't really a question, but he had found that talking less helped when he had to work more. More than once he had gone home with no voice. He wanted to avoid that. "But I don't have an excuse tonight considering I don't work tomorrow. Just... usually I'm not too talkative. And well, I don't think I look too good in a suit. Especially this one since it was bought a while ago." Sure, he had the muscles that he did back then, but it was still pretty tight and he was sure that he would need a new one soon. He would rather spend the money on something useful, like improving his new mini guitar since he had to replace the family heirloom now that it was used for something else. "I apologize. The food looks great, thank you." He said as he picked one with a tooth pick sticking out of it and ate it. "A lot better than what you can get in the store at least." He still preferred a nice gatorade or powerade though. At least he felt like he was getting his energy back. "You look amazing though Sadie. I'm surprised more aren't flocking around you." She did. He could at least admit that. "If you want... we could walk around together? Maybe get through this thing with one another rather than having to endure it by ourselves?" It wasn't a date proposition, it was literally just trying to get through the event without dying from boredom for him. Perhaps she enjoyed these events more than he did, but he would appreciate it if he had at least someone he could converse with around him.

Sadie tilted her head. "You don't want to speak?" He'd seemed fine with speaking before, but maybe he hadn't had to work, then. There was probably more demands for lifeguards in the summer. After a brief glance around, she placed her glass down on a nearby windowsill so that she could sign, Sorry. ASL?He settled back into spoken English quickly enough, though, and Sadie smiled, glad she could continue to hold her snacks even if she couldn't practice her sign. Sadie considered the suit at hand. "I think you look nice as nice, Duncan," she said. "It gives you a sharp, classic look, like you just stepped out of a red carpet photograph." Maybe it was a little on the tight side, but that look was becoming more popular lately, and it wasn't so noticeable unless you were looking. "Although I do think people look best in whatever makes them happiest." She wondered what that would be for him. His lifeguard clothes? Something comfortable? For her, it was probably garden overalls and dirt smudged up to her elbows, not the dress, either, but she still smiled when he complimented her, a hint of color coming to her cheeks. "Thank you," she said. "I haven't been to something like this since, um," she did the instinctual half-turn to hide her scars, "In a while. I don't know if I would want to be swarmed right now. Even if I'd known how to small talk, then, I would have forgotten by now." She caught herself and turned back, forcing her shoulders down. "A walk sounds lovely, though. Where should we go? Would you like fresh air, or should we go see what's up for sale?" Her eyes went a little dreamy as she looked over at the table. The artist in her liked seeing what old or beautiful things people decided to part with.

Duncan blushed at the compliment and turned his face away for a bit, finally taking a sip of the drink that he had been holding. "I don't know about that..." He mumbled to himself, low enough so that Sadie couldn't hear. When he was sure his face was a normal color again he turned back to her. He understood the pause she gave him. He couldn't even imagine how it must have been to receive such an injury and then have people asking questions about it. He set his drink down on a passing tray used to collect empty glasses. "Well you look like you're interested in what's for sale. We can look at those first and then get some fresh air." Looking at them wouldn't take that long, right? At least he couldn't imagine it so, but somehow some people were able to look at objects for long periods of time that were just sitting there and he often wondered what they were thinking as they did so. He held out his arm to her. "If you want, I can be your guardian against questions tonight if you need it." He was good at being intimidating at least. Sometimes he wondered if he should have been a bouncer instead of a lifeguard.

Sadie blinked as he looked away. Oh, should she not have said anything? At least a passing staff member came by to collect dirty dishes, and Sadie popped her last snack in her mouth so she could give them her plate, and by the time that was all sorted she he was talking again. "Thank you," she said, and she slipped her arm into his. "I do appreciate it." It was much nicer to be with a friend than at the mercy of strangers, although she did suddenly giggle as she realized that if they ran into one of her aunties, it might be Duncan who found himself on the receiving end of questions. Luckily, that coast seemed clear and she started making her way over towards the display. "Sometimes local artists donate to these things. That's always my favorite. This one seems like it's more businesses, maybe, so hopefully there's still something interesting." She glanced over, not quite sure what to say since they couldn't really talk about being knights. "Um, I looked at the catalogue and it seems like they have some equipment for different hobbies. What do you do when you're not swimming?"

Duncan was glad that Sadie took his offer. Now maybe they wouldn't be bothered by so many people if others thought they were only talking to each other. Which was perfectly fine with him! He followed her, trying to keep with her pace, though it was a bit awkward. He hadn't really ever tried walking with someone like that before and he wondered how other people did it. Probably slowly he imagined. Not something he would be too into in case he ever got into a relationship. "Local artists would be more interesting." He had to admit. A few of the times that he had managed to get in touch with them he had paid them to design a surfboard for him. He now had 3 but he loved how they looked. "Not swimming? I just lay there and wish I was." He replied, laughing a bit. "Kidding. I also like playing the guitar, whether it's a full one or a mini. I also do a bit of modeling on the side. But it also kind of depends on the day. I like taking walks, reading inside when it's too lousy to go out, those sorts of things. What about you though? I don't really know much of what you like to do. If you don't want to tell me, that's fine too though." It made him a bit sad. To make friends while powered, but not know who they were in their normal human lives. He wondered how any of them could really stay connected.

"Well, the local art scene is my hobby in some ways," said Sadie. Walking arm in arm didn't seem to bother her. If anything, she relaxed into it. She was always the friend who enjoyed physical closeness when she could get it, and this was no exception. "Did I tell you I'm a graphic designer?" she asked. "I'm a graphic designer, professionally. I started off with traditional art when I was little, though, and I still love watercolor painting and keeping up with other artists." There were, in fact, a few oil paintings among what mostly seemed to be antiques, and Sadie had been edging towards them, but something Duncan said caught her attention, and she looked over to him with a smile in her eyes. "You model?" It wasn't a surprising thing. He really did look like he belonged on the red carpet. "That suits you, I think. I'd love to see your work, or to hear your music." Sadie started looking over the items. She saw her mother's tea set among them. Nothing else really stood out. "As for me, I think I like gardening best of all." Just talking about it made her face light up. "I have an old YouTube channel and I think about making more videos, sometimes." She glanced back over. "Not that I was ever famous. It was small as small." She'd liked her followers, though. They'd always been kind. "I'm not usually so fancy, though. I watch Netflix most nights, that's all."

"I don't think you did, but that's interesting. I've always found it amazing what people can do with graphic design. Whether that's making logos, digital paintings or whatever. Makes me jealous. I'd love to see some of your work sometime." He really would. Maybe she's be willing to design a surfboard for him too? Asking that would have to wait until... later at least. He wasn't going to push her for it and asking too soon would probably make her feel like he was just using her, even if he would pay her. His face grew a bit red at her asking about the modeling, but he nodded his head in confirmation. "It's a... side job. Just for some local stuff, nothing too fancy." It was the attention from the modeling that he still wasn't used to, as either people recognized him or had no idea who he was. He preferred the latter, he had some too obsessed "fans" that had scared him off of modeling for a bit before. "I can show you some prints, I think I still have some." Did he? He would have to check. "Sounds like a good time. Gardening and watching Netflix. For me I have to be near a beach or body of water at most times, so winter tends to drive me a bit crazy. I'd love to see what you've done with your gardening as well. I haven't tried it myself, but it seems that while it would take a while for it to really show, it would be well worth it."

"Graphic design isn't so much about the painting," she said, even as she seemed to admire whatever craftsmanship she could find in the objects before her. "Although the painting can help if there's an element you're missing. It's more arranging all the tiny pieces until you've got the perfect webpage, or an advertisement that feels like a story." She had that zoned-out, talking about work tone in her voice, but she perked up a little towards the end. "Remind me next time and I'll show you my portfolio." She'd look at his modeling prints, too, but she wouldn't push the issue here, not with him looking so flustered his cheeks were flushing pink as strawberries. She wondered if he got flustered during shoots, too, or if it was just something about the reputation of models. "I like watching things grow," she said instead, about the gardening. "If you ever want to get started, I can help. Although I may try to cover your house in plants if you let me," she said, smile edging into a smirk. "Gardening's not usually so good in the winter, either, although I do have a bit of an, um," they weren't under the stars, but she glanced at the ceiling, hoping her would get the message, "Secret greenhouse."

"Hmm... well it would still be interesting to see. I mean, it would take quite a lot of creativity to make one website or advertisement look completely different from another and make it so that people liked it." One could often tell when a website used some sort of free form online to design theirs. Not that it was a big deal, but it was just easier to tell. "I will though." He replied, glad that he would be able to look. He nodded. "Well you have to have something to pass the time in the winter. I know sometimes I'll start writing songs, not that I've ever completed any, but it's something to take my mind off of the weather. Though I'll go to you for any gardening tips." He wasn't sure if he wanted to start one himself just yet, but it seemed like one way to give back to the Earth. Help it grow, make it become more beautiful. "I think I'd mostly like to plant native things though. I know how hard it is to get rid of invasive species."

"Well, even with all that, winter is still not the best for gardening," said Sadie with a little bit of a wistful look. "That's the time of year when I end up falling down the Netflix rabbit hole the hardest." It was also when she slept the most, and when the pile of takeout containers in her kitchen got the tallest. It was just so dark and cold as cold and she didn't want to be awake then anymore than her plants did. It was good that it was months away. "Native plants are the easiest, anyway, and there are lots of nice ones," she said. "There's ox-eyed sunflowers, butterfly weed, oh, and cherries!" She brightened at that. "The sour ones, mostly, and they take years to grow, but they're my favorite." Then she realized she was talking a little too fast and she slowed down. "But, um, enough about that. You write your own music, too?" Even if he was the type with unfinished projects, it still seemed a lovely way to pass the colder months. She smiled at him. "You just keep getting more and more interesting. What kind of music do you like?"

"Still sounds interesting. Though I wish we had more to do in the winter at least." It made him a bit depressed just thinking about it. "I don't blame you though. There has to be some way to spend the time while you wait for it to get just warm enough again for it to be comfortable to go outside. Good thing with that though is 50 degrees then feels like it's 70 when it first starts."The native plants sounded interesting though, and he always preferred those over non-native, even if they weren't invasive. They were there for a reason. He shrugged his shoulders at the music question. "Quiet, relaxing music. Though mostly it depends on the mood. Mostly I'll listen to movie soundtrack music. The ones made for the movies, not the ones that are just the pop-songs that they fit in there. I don't even try to sing, so my music is all instrumental." He liked playing with the notes though. "You would not want to hear my singing."
