Quote:
The Wishing Tree (1): A Destiny City Star Festival Tradition to be held every year; In Town Square, there is a beautiful tree with spreading branches. It is tall, but the lowest branches are easily reached. The city has decorated the tree with small, starlike ornaments and glistening lights. Thick leaves and beautiful purple flowers dangle from the branches, along with a myriad of different colored papers with handwritten wishes. Next to the tree is a stack of blank paper with twine attached, and a handwritten sign that explains:

Write your wish on a sheet of paper and tie it to the tree. Take one wish off the tree and do your best to grant it. When you have granted the wish, bury the paper in the park.

The papers are biodegradable and filled with seeds. There are no rules for wishing, but you are encouraged to wish for something vague enough that it can be interpreted in many ways so that it can be granted; you do not write your name on it, but it is encouraged to write something that doesn’t wish for self gain, but rather something that can make the world a better place. Some wishes dangling from the tree already include things like “I wish there wasn’t so much litter in the park,” “I wish someone would clean the graffiti off the old historic buildings,” and “I wish there were more volunteers at the shelter.”

If you choose to use the Wishing Tree, what do you wish for? If your wish is private, you may write it on the paper and choose a spot in the park and bury it yourself instead of hanging it on the tree.

Even if Mia had seen Wishing Trees like this in her animes (probably the few sappy slice of life ones she could stomach), when actually faced with one, she was a bit stymied. What did she even want to wish for? And which other wish should she grant in exchange? It was an immensely hard decision all around, because if Mia was going to make a wish, she wanted it to count. And if she was going to grant a wish, she wanted it to count, too.

So, there she stood in front of the wishing tree, making a good deal of frustrated grunting and hmm-ing and huh-ing as she tried to make her decision. Someone would probably have to tell her to shut up and make a freaking wish already soon, but she was going to take her sweet time till then.

Hannah stood near the sign and after reading it carefully she picked up a blank piece of paper and pencil to write with.

A wish... she hummed thoughtfully.

Looking up at the lovely tree, branches swaying in the light breeze that caused dappled sunspots and colored lights from the ornaments to shift on the ground like a kaleidoscope, she considered her options carefully. In light of the events that have happened over the last few years, her heart was left feeling lonely. When there had been discussions about moving in with her boyfriend, Sheena had decided to move in with another senshi to keep her identity a secret. Unfortunately, after finding a place to live she was the only one to move in.

Work had kept her busy most days, calling her in on the few she had off due to understaffing and working other nurses to the breaking point. But there was nothing to be done and there were patients that needed assistance. Even her duties as a senshi had been forgotten for a time due to simply being too exhausted when it was time to finally clock out.

In all honesty, she considered wishing for more time but knew that wasn't really something anyone could easily grant.

And so, Hannah closed her eyes for a moment and simply listened to the sounds around her, kids running along the sidewalk playing tag while parents cautioned them to slow down or apologizing to the people their children ran into. She could hear a street performer playing the violin and could easily imagine the smiles of the surrounding crowd enjoying the familiar melody. However, it was the humming of the person next to her that gently tugged her attention and was the reason she finally opened her eyes again.

“Seems we’re both struggling to figure out what to wish for.” She smiled kindly and walked over to stand beside the young woman with fiery red hair and cyan colored eyes.

"Bwuh?" Mia blinked hard, startled out of her intense concentration (if it could be called that). She looked to the girl who had spoken, and if she'd been more present, she would have noted the girl's very serene, watery palette. Or maybe she would have just thought she was cute, because she was. "Oh, uh..." Yep, cute. That much sank in. "Yeah! Picking a wish is hard! I want to make what I put out there count, seriously. I don't want it to be unfair to grant, or a waste of a wish." She was thinking incredibly hard about this point.

"And the part where we've gotta grant other people's wishes! I mean, I'm not gonna cherry-pick for an easy grant, but what if I get a hard one and can't grant it properly? I feel like that'd be bad karma right out of the gate." Mia's habit of taking the little things blazingly seriously was shining bright right now. She was definitely overthinking things, but would that stop her? Not at all.

“Not necessarily.” Hannah looked up at all the pieces of paper tied to the branches, some were higher then she was tall but there were still plenty of options within reach. “I didn’t see a rule saying you can’t ask for help.”

It’s a half-truth to say that God only gives us what we can handle. Because in those moments when it’s too much there is an alternative or way out. It became almost a mantra for the years she had spent in and out of the hospital and still held true for the most part especially since awakening as a Senshi.

But she was still here and hadn’t given up yet. So that must mean something right?

“My name’s Hannah,” She turned and extended a hand to the young woman. “And if you’d like, after we’ve written our own, perhaps we can both pick a wish and try to grant them together.”

The cute watery girl had a point- Hannah. Her name was Hannah. "Yeah! You're not wrong. Just so long as the wish is granted, right?" Mia couldn't help but smile when she saw the extended hand, and she accepted the handshake. "I'm Mia! That sounds like a good deal. I just..." Her attention went back to the stack of papers near the tree. "I can't think of a wish! Everything feels too simple or too broad or too grand in one way or another. Or it just doesn't feel right. Heeeeeelp."

Honestly, part of her was wondering if the process couldn't be done in reverse: grant wish, make wish. Coming up with a wish was being so unnecessarily hard right now!

Hannah looked back up at the tree again. Her cerulean blue colored eyes scanned over the dozens upon dozens of papers tied to each limb as she hummed quietly to herself. “I suggest sticking with something simple. Something that doesn’t require a lot of money since there are a lot of kids here that might not have a way to grant it otherwise.”

A thought struck her with that last mention and before the idea had a chance to slip away, Hannah walked back over to the table and wrote her with on the blank piece of paper.

Quote:
My wish is to witness random acts of kindness.

Please do something kind for someone in need who is otherwise unable to do something for themselves. Rather than accepting compensation, kindly request that they pay it forward and do something nice for at least two other people and continue this trend.

Help spread love, acceptance, and kindness in our community.

A small smile tugged the corner of Hannah’s lips as she turned around and walked over to one of the low hanging branches. She tied the piece of paper at a height that almost anyone could reach it, be it an elderly person in a wheelchair or a child hoping to participate in the event.

Mia nodded to express understanding of the conditions. "I'm not gonna do anything that involves money. That's literally locking a wish behind a paywall." The distaste was evident in her voice. Despite evidence to the contrary, she didn't want to think that life was a pay to win game. At the very least, it wouldn't be for her and those around her.

She didn't catch a glimpse of what Hannah wrote, but somehow, inspiration struck her not long after. "I've got it! Guess it hit you and then went to me, huh?" Grinning, she scooped up a piece of paper and scribbled down her wish as fast as she could while still being legible.

"I want to see more justice in the world!

Make a stand for what you think is right. Correct people on dangerous views and behavior before they go too far. Do your best to spread good will in the world.

Action is the only way to move forward. Don't stand by while bad things happen. One word can change everything."

Maybe it was a bit dramatic, but it certainly had Mia's earmarks on it. It seemed fitting and grantable one way or another, at least to her. She didn't put much thought into where she hung her wish, simply putting it right in front of her on the tree. "There we go. Now to pick one to grant..."

“I think that’s a really good wish.” Hannah smiled then walked over to a branch on the other side of the tree.

Among the lights and ornaments was a pale green piece of paper that drew her attention in a way she couldn’t explain. It wasn’t as if the color particularly stood out like the bright oranges or happy yellow pieces of paper. Perhaps it was because it wasn’t such a bold color and instead symbolized growth, life, and in her mind a soft kindness.

Whatever the reason was, Hannah reached up and untwisted the piece of twine then walked over to where she had left Mia. She hummed thoughtfully as she read over the wish. “Seems we’re going to visit the pottery shop over on Moonlight Avenue. It appears that volunteers have put on a display that this wish maker would like us to see.”

“Your turn to pick one.”

"Eh?!" Mia jolted a bit in exaggerated surprise. "You're not supposed to read other people's wishes!" She realized her error shortly after, since these wishes were quite literally there for all to read. "Uh, I mean, while they're being written. Yeah." When Hannah extended the invitation to the pottery shop, Mia nodded. "Sounds like a plan. I'm not super up to date on art stuff, but if they want us to see it, I'm not gonna say no."

Mia hesitated before picking a red wish paper slightly above her. This one read:

"The world needs to be more beautiful. Take this to mean whatever you want: remove something ugly, add something pleasant."

"I dunno man, beauty is in the eye of the beholder," Mia mumbled before looking back to Hannah. "This wish is kinda vague, but hey, they said to take it whatever way we wanted. So... guess I gotta remove some ugly things, then?" She shrugged and looked into the distance. "Let's take care of your thing first. I can probably do this one whenever."

Hannah pulled out her phone to Google the poetry studio. “According to my GPS, it is four blocks that way then one block over.” Thankfully it wasn’t too far since she had already spent too many hours this week on her feet.

“We could probably take care of a part of yours along the way.” She leaned over and picked up a piece of garbage that had fallen beside the table. A discarded wish or one that someone had made some sort of a written error on. Although the paper was pretty, even the slightest of breezes could lift it up and carry it away to a place where the seeds weren’t meant to be buried.

Mia nodded, trying to mentally map her way to the destination. "Sounds good. Distance isn't really a problem for me." When she saw Hannah dispose of the errant garbage, she cut in with a, "Hey, that doesn't count! I have to be the one that takes out the trash."

Giggling awkwardly, she took a few steps away. "Well, lead the way! It never hurts to broaden your horizons." Mia didn't consider herself super well versed in the arts, but the more she thought about it, the more she wanted to investigate.

A light laughter escaped her, "Fair enough." She replied and without complaint she led the way towards the studio and as she walked, Hannah tilted her head up to the sky and with a smile she let the sun warm her skin. Beautiful weather and friendly company were balm for a weary soul.

For a better tomorrow. That's what these careful wishes were ultimately asking for and she, for one, felt more than happy to see that become a possibility.
