Quote:
It was already late in the evening but the merchant seemed unfazed by the passing of time. He sat, poised and elegant, watching the world around him. He didn’t seem bored but he sat, fingers laced atop the table; below it, he kept his toe tapping to some silent tune in his head. He was tall, by human standards, though while sitting down he didn’t seem particularly threatening. If you didn’t look at his face.

He had graceful features--sharp and refined. His chin and nose tapered to a point, giving him an air of sophistication, but that, combined with his slitted eyes and pointed teeth, there was something undeniably predatory about him. He watched with a hungry gaze and a mischievous, nearly sinister smile. His ears were pointed and were prominent despite being tucked behind his vibrant, multi-colored hair. The most intrusive feature that indicated there was something not human about him were the curling horns protruding from his temples and the oil-slick black scales that brushed his cheeks and forehead. He was well dressed, in a fashion obviously otherworldly, and seemed to enjoy dressing himself up in glistening gemstones.

His stall was somehow both simple and overwhelming; it was only a table with a deep purple cloth over it, but scattered neatly atop it were an array of items that seemed to carry some magical weight to them.

He did not seem intimidated in the slightest and, upon noticing a customer approaching, he smiled.

He did not rise to meet them nor adjust his position in the slightest. He followed them with his fierce eyes.

In a silky voice, he greeted, “Welcome.”

Lost in thought, Myth didn't realize that she'd been following an unconscious call until darkness gave way to a richly decorated table occupied by a single person. She pulled up short with a nervous chuckle as she almost walked right into the table.

"Oh! I'm so sorry! Don't know where my mind was...," she chattered until the table's attendant spoke. Something about the voice made her pause and stare. And stare she did until each of the... person's features had properly registered in her brain. Feeling the hair along the back of her neck prickle, she wondered if she should transform. Only, this person... he? He.

He wasn't doing anything other than sitting and smiling. Creepy, but not inherently dangerous. Recalling some of her gramma's stories, she glanced around her for a moment before shrugging to herself and stepping a little closer.

"Well, this isn't a crossroads, so I'm fairly certain you aren't the devil. So, um... hi?"

As she drew closer, she saw that his table was set up to display a wide range of interesting things.

"Are you one of the festival merchants?"

"Something like that," he answered easily; he spoke with a hint of an accent but it was impossible to place. "Have you brought something to trade?"

His foot was bobbing lightly below the table and he was leaned forward in such a way that indicated he was very interested in whatever she had to offer--if she even had something to trade. He gave her a quick look over but his eyes settled on her face. He gave the impression of being patient, and yet, with her before him he was seeping with unspoken excitement as he waited for her presentation.

"Would you like some glasses to see a bit better? I've got a pair or two. Might keep you from bumping into things."

As her eyes began to scan over the table, Myth's head tilted slightly as she gazed sharply at the merchant. Trade?

"Trade," she repeated. "Not money? I'm surprised you're not more popular up here."

Now did she have anything she could try to use as a trade? She was about to turn from the table in regret when she thought of the little gem she'd found. No one had posted with the lost and found about such a thing. And she'd found it half buried in dirt and dead leaves. Would it be so bad to offer it?

Keeping her attention half on the merchant, she snorted a laugh as he offered her glasses. Keeping her voice voice droll as she pulled the little gem star from her pocket and laid it on the edge of the table, she said, "Kind of you, but nothing is wrong with my eyes. I was lost in thought and wasn't expecting you to be in my path. So, would this be worthy of a trade?"

She did feel a tiny guilt stab since she couldn't be completely sure that the gem didn't belong to someone. But she also knew that she'd done her due diligence in trying to find the proper owner.

So much for guilt. Besides, the sheer amount of things on the table were far too tempting for her to leave without trying to get something.

His eyes immediately fell to the little gem and though his eyes flickered with eager interest, his face maintained the thin smile. "Oh, I suppose I could wrangle up something for that, yes."

He reached for it and drew it close, examining it with a bit more gusto. He nodded promptly, though, and set the stone back down on the table--only, closer to him. A trade required trust between two parties, and he was eager to fulfill his end of the bargain.

"Then," he gestured to his wares. "I implore you. Does something catch your eye? Or," he looked down, fingers gliding over the oddities in his possession. "Shall I make an offer of my own? Perhaps..."

Silence, for a few seconds, and then he reached for a silver flask. He debated for a moment and then said, "You know, you don't strike me as much of a drinker. But. This is a neat little piece."

He held it out for inspection; even with its visible age, it had a lustrous sheen to it. There was a faded symbol on the back that he didn't seem to recognize--or maybe just didn't care about--and ornate swirls carved into it. There was an inscription but it was in another language and was impossible to read.

"It will keep whatever liquid you like cold, for as long as you like. Go ahead, open it up. You can feel the chill inside. That's useful, isn't it? And this piece itself is quite the antique. I found it years ago. Do you like it? Or shall I go through the whole collection for you?"

Myth was quick enough to note the flash on interest in the merchant's eyes when she offered up the little star. And she couldn't help but smile a little when he set the star down but made sure it now rested closer to him. Apparently she'd found something good. Nodding agreeably when he declared her half of the trade good, she would have been happy to follow his first suggestion and browse.

But his second offer to find something for her brought her up short. This person was certain not like any other sales-person she'd ever encountered. Why, she only very rarely ever made a suggestion when someone came in to shop. And then, it was only when she knew the customer and their tastes or interests. She was tempted to brush aside his offer to find something when he turned back to her with the little flask.

She had to chuckle in agreement with his assessment that she didn't really drink and nod that it was indeed, a neat little piece.

Taking the flask in her hand, she allowed to gaze to brush over it. Certainly it was old, but a flask? It was hardly in her wheelhouse. She almost handed it back when her fingertips brushed over the carvings and she held the flask closer to her eyes. She didn't know what the symbol meant, thought the design was pretty enough. But it was the inscription that caused her to freeze. She couldn't read it, but something about it set off a tripwire deep in her soul. Something deep inside insisted that this was something familiar, something she should know.

As she tried to keep her alarm in check, she obediently opened the flask and felt the chill oozing out. This was magic, she was certain. And the sense that she knew this piece swelled.

"Yes," she murmured. "It's very old, indeed."

The idea of giving the flask back no longer appealed and Myth looked up and into the merchant's eyes, a hint of steel in her voice.

"Where did you find this?"

The Merchant watched her with eyes that said he knew. His smile never faltered, thin and pressed and sly.

"Oh, here or there," he said, mischief barely concealed. "I have had it for a while, I mustn't be expected to remember everything. Though," he clicked his tongue atop the roof of his mouth, exposing the black, forked thing for only a second. It was dark against his white, sharp teeth.

"But there are so many things, so many places, in this universe. No one else visits, anymore. But I get around. This one was..."

His voice tapered off and then, almost flippantly, he continued, "Oh, I don't know. This one makes me think of water. I'd wager it was at the bottom of a lake. But don't quote me on that. I won't be called a liar. Why, were you hoping for a history lesson, too?"

If Myth hadn't been intent on maintaining politeness for the sake of knowledge, she would have been very tempted to seize the Merchant's collar and slap the taste out of his mouth. His sly smile grated as nerves already on edge. But rather than resorting to shrieking and or violence, she took a deep breath and kept as calm as she could.

All while holding the flask in a death grip.

"I'm sure you remember enough," she replied sweetly, trying very hard to not shiver at the sight of the forked tongue and sharp teeth. "If not everything. And I wouldn't dream of calling you a liar. I have every intention of telling anyone who asks that we had only the most honest of dealings."

Oh, she was very aware that there were a lot of abandoned places in the universe and the Merchant's mention of finding this flask at the bottom of a lake had her nearly leaping across the table to shake more information from him. Instead, she allowed herself only a few muscle twtiches. There were probably hundreds of Wonders and planets that had a lake. Lakes were common things.

Still.

"A lake, huh? I don't suppose you can recall anything beyond that? I'm happy to absorb whatever knowledge you're willing to provide."

If it was her lake she was going to give this guy a nice little warning to keep away in the future. She didn't want to lose anymore links to her past that time and ruin had already taken.

His smile persisted and, keen as he was, he didn't at all miss the shift in her attitude. "It was a pretty place. I can't say there was anything otherwise remarkable."

He leaned back in his seat a bit, watching her intently; the corners of his lips remained upturned, but there was a shred of seriousness lurking beneath that, like he understood that provoking her wasn't the smartest thing to be doing right now.

"A place untouched by any living creature for so long it slipped through the cracks of time and into my hand. I found it years ago. Perhaps well before you were born, I forget how Earthlings age. If you're going to reprimand me for my acquisitions, know that it's wasted breath. I won't stop. You can take the trade or leave it. It's up to you. But I'll find someone else who wants that," he nodded to the flask, and then added a few seconds later, "Though perhaps no one who wants it more than you."

"It is a pretty place," Myth murmured under her breath, lost in thought for just a moment. THen, with a start she realized that she'd said the quiet part out loud and flushed. Then, his words sank into her and a sheepish expression flickered across her face.

"How the hell old are you?" she blurted, then groaned at how rude the question was, hiding her face behind a free hand for a moment until she could regain her composure. Taking a deep breath and forcing tense muscles to relax, she finally looked back up and offered an apologetic smile. And then, just to show that she was contrite, she gave the Merchant a bow.

"As a fellow lover of antiques and historical knick knacks, I don't want you to stop and I wouldn't dream of asking you to," she spoke slowly, working her way through a tangle of emotion. "In fact, I would love nothing more than to dive through your collection and pick your brain about each thing. You're no better nor worse than the antique hunters and anthropologists here, so why bother scolding? What I [i[am asking," she continued earnestly, "is for you to be careful. Some places aren't abandoned anymore."

Then, wrinkling her nose comically, she smiled and laughed a little helplessly at herself.

"I know I'd be pretty put out if the pillows and table that I just took up there were to vanish. But maybe there's not much of an intergalactic interest in Ikea. I have no idea."

Studying the flask in her hand, she knew she would be taking it home. And that wasn't her little loft in Destiny City. As she studied the flask, her eyes went to one of the rings on her hand. It had been a promise ring and the only reason it hadn't been tossed by now was due to Myth's lack of a decent replacement. But she knew that it was real silver and the setting was a real pearl. Coming to a quick decision, she set the flask down only long enough to take the ring from her hand and set it on the table with the little star.

"You can consider that a bonus," she said, feeling a band around her heart loosening. "And an apology for me being bitchy at you. I guess all I really was getting at is I would like to sit down with you someday and go through your collection in a civilized manner. Probably involving tea. But I can't do that if you misjudge in your travels and get caught by an annoyed senshi or knight that's visiting home. Fair?"

After all, she thought, so many places would probably never see their guardians again. Why scold the Merchant for taking advantage of that? And he said himself that he wasn't about to stop, so all she could really do was hope he'd use good judgement.

Then, she smiled again and held out a hand to seal their trade.

"You're right, by the way. No one wants this flask more than me. And I'm woman enough to admit when I've acted like a s**t and apologize."

He shamelessly accepted the offered ring; once it was presented, it disappeared behind his swift fingers. With her extended hand, he reached his own and gripped hers firmly.

"No hard feelings, of course," he assured, but he was a businessman. He wasn't going to go out of his way to insult a client, regardless of whatever attitude they'd given. Not when he could be bribed with tips and gifts, it seemed.

"Your concern is kind. But I assure you, I am old enough to know where to venture and where to avoid. If there's danger, I don't venture far." He was mulling something over as he gave her a solid shake and watched her with a curious expression.

"I can tell the difference between a world with a protector and those without. Senshi, and Knights--oh. No, those aren't the things that scare me." There was something unnerving in his voice, the way he said such a thing and meant it.

When he drew his hand away from hers, he flicked his wrist and produced a simple, glossy, black card and offered it to her between two fingers. On one side, an ornate symbol that looked incredibly similar to a fingerprint. It was printed with a red, holographic ink.

On the other side, in opalescent ink, a single word in elegant script: Almadel.

"A drop of blood," he said, nodding to the card. "...Press your finger into it. I'm a very popular man. Or, I was. I will be, again. Now that I've found that Earth is teeming with life." He shrugged. "But with such popularity, it means I need to sort my time wisely. I find, appointments are best made when I know I'm dealing with a serious client."

His eyes were on hers.

"You seem as much. And, you seem interesting."

Relieved that the Merchant harbored no hard feelings, Myth couldn't help the tiny quirk of her lips into an amused smile as her ring vanished quickly. The smile deepened when he called her concern kind. Consummate businessman, this guy. But she could respect that.

And she believed him without question when he said that it wasn't the Senshi and Knights out there that scared him. Something in his tone when he made that statement sent literal shivers up her spine.

"I don't think I would want to meet anything that could scare you," she said quietly. "I have a feeling that it would take quite a lot to manage that feat."

She would have to consider it more later, but she found herself wondering if there were monsters out in space, lurking on dead planets and just waiting for visitors. Could youma even survive out in space? She'd always rather thought that they were more of an earth-bound menace. But what if that wasn't the case...?

She was pulled from her thoughts by the Merchant withdrawing his hand and making a flicking motion. Grinning in delight for his theatrics, she accepted the card and studied it closely. It was a simple thing, pretty and slightly sinister all at once. Flipping it over, she read the script and glanced up to meet the Merchant..., no. Almadel's eyes. There was no doubt that this was his name. Listening intently, her eyes flickered to the fingerprint like symbol on the card and narrowed.

"Do I need to draw blood now?" she spoke slowly, wondering what she could be getting herself into. Though, whatever it was, she wasn't about to stop. This was all simply too interesting. "And I understand. It's important to manage one's time intelligently.

Looking back up to nod in agreement, his eyes caught hers and she felt rather like a mouse dealing with a semi-benevolent hawk.

"Well," she said softly, "I'm certainly flattered to be thought of as a serious client as well as interesting."

What was that meme about being terrified and aroused at the same time? Myth had a sudden and deep understanding of that sentiment, though hers was less arousal and more of a hungry curiosity.

"You're pretty interesting yourself, sir."

Almadel winked nonchalantly, unmistakably vague in his intent. It might have been flirtatious or confirmatory. “No need for blood now, I’m already here. Just a p***k, when you find something worth my time. I have a vast array of collectibles.” He gestured to his table--and yet, these were the things he was willing to part with.

He wore the same, complacent smile he’d started with. “I’m glad you find me interesting. Hopefully my wares more so. But then, who would want any exchange with someone boring?” He drew the word out, as though it were painful on his tongue.

“No,” he said firmly. “No, I will take the interesting ones any day. So you must take care of yourself so I can see you again.”

Okay, she had to laugh ungrudgingly as Almadel winked at her. Since he didn't strike her as particularly flirtatious, she wasn't terribly worried that she'd somehow struck the romantic fancy of some other worldly being. Which was a decided relief, really. She was far more interested in what Almadel might be willing to show to her and possibly teach her.

Nodding understanding, she tucked his calling card into her pocket along with the little flask. She wasn't sure if she would ever find anything interesting enough to attempt a summons, but it was good to have the option and the means.

Laughing again, she shook her head in sympathy. She'd had a few boring customers before in her own shop. She could understand his pain.

"Clearly not yourself, my friend," she said. "And I suppose not me, too. Though I deal more in cash exchanges than outright trade, so I may have it a little easier in that regard."

Her smile turned wry at his request that she take care of herself.

"I'll do my best if you do the same," she chirped before taking a step back from the table and touching her fingers to her forehead in a type of jovial salute. "Now, I'm sure you have other customers, so I won't be rude and monopolize any more of your time. I'll be sure to put the kettle on for whenever I see you again!"

Giving the Merchant a friendly wave and wink of her own, Myth turned and bowed her head in concentration. She wanted her wonder very badly right now. And she hoped that Almadel wouldn't think her rude for leaving but some inner sense had told her it was time. She'd gotten her trade and a calling card to boot.

Within moments, Myth had vanished into the darkess. She had some items to store in the safest place she knew.
