about
Name: Gabhan (Gavin) or Gabby
Race: Geian
Gender: Male
Class: Rogue (S2)
Future Class: Minstrel
Significant Other: Single
Children: None

personality

Independent:He doesn't blink about potentially leaving his family to pursue a future away from Belrea. He's quietly confident in his own abilities, or at least in his ability to handle himself and solve his own problems.

Ill-mannered: He's a country boy through and through. He lacks refinement, and is blunt with his thoughts, loud in his mannerisms, and oblivious to the potential for offending someone. An example would be making the sensible decision to sleep next to his family's familiars after a long night, to keep warm, and being confused as to why everyone thinks he smells so bad.

Another root cause of his manners (or lack thereof) is that he can't think on the fly very well. He's a country boy, through and through - overly friendly, honest to the point of self-risk, and if he somehow did realize he needed to lie, he'd likely not be very good at it.

Determined/Stubborn: When he wants to do something, Gabby sticks to it - even if it isn't necessarily the best course of action. This can at times lead to him being argumentative, though he can eventually see reason and change his mind, it's difficult to do and more often than not he's already made a rushed decision and acted on it before considering the ramifications, or fully considering someone's alternate viewpoint.

Gabby's stubbornness can lead to trouble. If he has faith in someone's abilities, he will no doubt listen; but the moment he feels that person may be wrong, he will defer to his own judgement and abilities. He may be reluctant to stop and ask for help, and if someone he DOES ask for help can't immediately explain the issue, he will be more likely to disregard them completely.

He doesn't like to admit his own faults, and nothing short of making a mistake and seeing the consequences will lead him to admit defeat.

Overall: As one of many children in a large family, Gabby does well in a crowd and is the big-brother to everyone he meets. He's likely to step out of line to help a stranger, if he feels sympathetic to them; but also just as likely to start an argument if he feels someone is in the wrong. Raised in the country, he's blunt to a fault, and somewhat boorish to those with more refined sensibilities. All he wants in life is to work hard, and sit back and relax with friends, family, and a good bit of music and dancing!

description

Dark skin, on the husky side, thick and muscled but without definition. Somewhat pudgy. His hair is mint green, with pale blue eyes, a broad nose, and a goatee. His hair is shaved on both sides, and curly/thick on the top. His marking is a series of boxy lines beneath his right eye.

History

A middle child in a large Geian family, Gabhan (called Gabby by his family and friends) is the apprentice to his father as a stonemason (in the sector of Resource). As a child, he resigned himself to a life of hard work with his family - but with the advent of steam transportation to the other continent, he's hopeful to leave Belrea and its tightly constrained social roles, and make a life for himself as a musician (a role reserved usually for lightning earthlings back home). There's little real drama to Gabby's life, beyond the normal tension held between siblings in a large family - and he wishes, perhaps, for a life of excitement away from his well-established family.

When and how did he decide that music was the fit for him? ((Especially in a society where entertainment is often left to the lightning race.))

His brand of music is more - the sort of workman's dittys and family singing, musical plucking that he'd have seen at close family events, or during a long day's work. I don't think Geian's are lacking music, just that they're not likely to be the bards or musicians that go around the cities, or play at events/taverns.

Gabby is drawn to the community of music, the playfulness and enjoyment and energy music can bring to a room, not so much the idea of some coy singer or musician plucking at an instrument in the corner of a room.

How do you think he will react to the cultures in Tendaji as opposed to Belrea? Will he have culture shock or will he embrace them?

Culture shock, definitely - but in a good way. He'll be really confused for a long time, maybe overwhelmed, but ultimately I think he'll really enjoy life away from Belrea.

Will the lack of strict social rules confuse him? Or will he find a more comfortable home in Oba where social structure plays a bigger part?

It will confuse him, definitely - he will probably have a hard time understanding who does what, as I imagine Belrea makes it easier to tell what someone's task/profession is. But he also left BECAUSE he wanted to work outside of the social structure, so he'll embrace it while also being frustrated by its inefficiency.

Do you think he will have a hard time living without the "technology" that Belrea provides?

For a long while, yes, definitely. Things being so spread out will be weird - the lack of shipping, easy transport and trade, etc. and relative slowness of Tendaji versus Belrea will be, as you said before, culture shock. I think a simpler life will ultimately suit him, but he'll have to adjust to it first.

Class Affinity: Minstrel

[331 words]

Let me tell you a little bit about misery. Misery was hearing music in your head and not having the proper tools to bring it out. Misery was tapping a sad imitation of a melody with your fingertips against your knee, it was in the inability to put proper emotion and kinetic energy into the rapping of knuckles against a table. Misery was in the stomping of boots on the floor without a proper rattling chimes along with it, or the mischievous trill of strings, or trills of a flute.

Gabhan was in jail, yes, it was less the restriction of his movement that bothered him as the limitations to his craft. He could sing, yes, but his voice sounded sad without accompaniment, a fact that the other prisoners were vicious in reminding him. Perhaps, a proper stonemason like his father would have been satisfied with how well built his jail cell was, would have traced the dried mortar with his fingertips and taken some solace in being surrounded by familiarity.

To Gabhan, it felt almost petty to be blocked in, literally, by what had only been a metaphor until now. If he hadn’t smashed his lute over his assailant’s head, would they have let him keep it? His plaintive requests for an instrument, anything, were met with open skepticism.

It wasn’t until a representative of the sector of security came to see him that Gabhan was allowed a measure of music. He’d brought a woman with him, told her to peer through the slat of his door at him and say whether he was a mass murderer or not… but she’d looked at him with furrowed brows and said ‘no’. And in exchange, Gabhan had been given a pouch of gold as a settlement - which he’d immediately used to buy a new lute.

… At least, when he was told to stay at the local inn for the duration of the investigation, he had an instrument with him this time.

After nearly two days locked away in the security sector’s jailhouse, the witness to Gabhan’s alleged murderous activities had come forward and said, without a doubt, that he was NOT the perpetrator. You’d think that that would be that - he’d be let go with a hot meal in his belly and an apology and that would be that. But uh… no. Apparently that wasn’t how the security sector of Belrea liked to play it. He was moved to an inn room, rather than a jail cell, treated by a healer who bound up his arm and used a burst of magic on it to promote its healing, and told to stay put until a proper investigation could be made.

Apparently, the fact that a bounty hunter for the security sector had injured someone from the Sector of Resource was a big deal to a lot of people. It represented lost labor, sure, but also the interference of one group with another, and that alone threw Gabhan’s case into the swing of bureaucracy at its finest. His sector wanted to extort funding from the other for his injuries, while the security sector demanded a full investigation into both the one who wrote the bulletin (vague as it was, despite being a bounty for him ‘dead or alive’), and the bounty hunter himself - who had conveniently gone missing.

His dad was furious … first Gabhan had lost expensive tools while fooling around with his music, and now he’d been attacked because he’d snuck out late to play? During his visits, he’d ranted and raved while Gabhan’s eldest brother looked on sympathetically, declaring that ‘you’re a man now, act like it! Enough with staying out, drinking and playing all night - you need a wife to help you settle down, when I was your age--’

Gabhan had let it go in one ear and out the other with a bored sort of disinterest, while a growing resentment curdled in his gut. HE had almost been killed, and instead of being concerned his family was… angry? It had been a stupid accident, it wasn’t because of his music!

Heck, he’d even broken his favorite instrument trying to protect himself… what were they thinking? That he’d done it for fun?

If anything, this was more of a turning point than anything else. With his parents back home, they couldn’t stop him asking for the representative from the security sector to visit him so he could make his case. His case being, of course, that he wasn’t part of any sector at the time of the attack - he’d been in the process of emigrating to the continent.

Did they believe him? Probably not, but the harried security officer seemed relieved to be rid of the case, and the cost of an airship ticket wasn’t nearly as much as the extended reservation at the inn. It’d been a long time coming, but … finally he had taken the plunge. He could only hope his siblings wouldn’t be TOO upset with him for leaving without saying goodbye.

[Gabhan has been ready to live his life as a minstrel, but his place in his family has stood in his way. Maybe this is the chance he needed to actually break away and travel the world?
