Sethaeus recalled the first time he heard about the cotenant across the sea. The researchers from the academy had been examining the island in the distance, too far across the water for them to reach by ship without a secure path. So when they developed the flying ships, many were excited to explore the isle and see if any other earthlings inhabited the shores. Seth, instead, was more focused on his most recent homework from his father...perfecting the temperatures depending on the metal he wanted to work. So when the ship left, he was at home in the workshop, ignoring the hustle to enjoy his freedom and silence.
When they returned after an apparent crash landing, bringing back earthlings and bug-people alike, Seth took a moment to acknowledge that there were people before getting back to work. He had too much to do as a helper to worry about the great big world. He had a craft to begin mastering, and he was determined to do so in a quick manner.
Over the years that followed, Seth wished he could become an actual apprentice. He was young, sure, but that didn't mean he wasn't ready. He sacrificed so much to get far, only to be told to be patient. To wait it out. That soon, it would be time, but for now he needed to just focus on his schooling and get ready for the full-time job when he was of age.
So, Seth didn't really notice when more visitors from across the waters came to visit. He didn't notice how they would explore, settle, or attempt to join in with the life around them. He only noticed when they arrived to make purchases, noting the differences depending on each new customer in order to recall who made the order.
Some had long ears, longer than any he had seen, with sandy skin or blue skin. The blue skinned customers caught him off guard with their bright eyes. Then there were the ones that looked almost Geian, but had bright red hair and eyes. They were a bit gruff, but easy to manage. Finally, the ones with the bug-eyes were the most startling. They were women who were taller than any earthling he had met, with a warrior spirit and keen interest to evaluate his family's weapons. Some made purchases, but most just looked around and moved on. Seth would grit his teeth for them, mostly because it felt like an insult on his family.
Eventually, the news calmed down enough that the newcomers were casual visitors, regulars even, and the gossip faded. That was until news came around that another island had been discovered. His family was quite keen to learn what they could, but Seth continued to work. His friends would come visit and tell him that these newcomers were different...they breathed and lived underwater of all places. Seth was curious, but let it pass just the same.
However he couldn't escape the gossip and began to wonder. If they lived underwater, did that mean they couldn't use metal? Metal tended to rust and weaken when submerged, but he had found swords in lakes generations later. Maybe they did use them for things beside fighting, since they apparently were peaceful traders. For a moment he actually considered the idea of living with them, since they seemed to operate at the same pace he himself enjoyed. But his family legacy was too important to pass on, and so he just shrugged and continued to work.
The rumors faded and none of the water breathers visited his workshop since they were discovered. Much of the news of Tendaji faded to Seth. He wasn't super interested in the world with where he needed to focus. His goals were his own, and even if he wanted to explore more of Tendaji, it would only get in the way of establishing his legacy. He needed to do so much in order to become an apprentice in the eyes of his father and family, and had little time for gossip and suppositions that many of his friends focused on. As a result, he found himself slowly fading from those circles, losing friends when he ignored and brushed them off. It didn't really bother him, as he knew he would eventually grow out of that group when he finally began to work at the blacksmith. So with the stories, rumors, and life in Tendaji, Seth let it continue to fade in the background and he focused on his work and future.
