Prompt
The earthlings were welcoming and open to the ways of Kahikina, willing to trade knowledge for knowledge. In the initial years of relationship development, the people of Kahikina learned about battle and magic. When before a rare few could cast spells, now anyone could learn if taught properly.
Healers, casters, fighters and warriors. All of these new jobs were novel for the trade-based Kahikinans. What an expansion to a world they never knew!
This solo-only prompt is for you to explore how your character deals with the new classes and magic of Tendaji. Do they embrace it? Shun it? Are they interested enough to take on a new class compared to before?
His father had berated him for his stupidity. His mother had spat at him for endangering his family. And Joena... She only looked disappointed. When she assured him, 'It's okay. I know this wasn't your intention...' Rewi wasn't convinced she meant it.
And how could she?
She'd been crippled by that landwalker's spear through her shoulder. She hadn't bled out, as Rewi had feared, but the bones in her shoulder had been shattered, the muscles shredded. Joena had completely lost use of one of her arms. And it was Rewi's fault. She'd wanted to make something of herself. She'd had goals and ambition. She'd wanted to be an artist of tattoos and a crafter of her own ink... And now her capacity to do those things was limited... Because of him.
There were no healers in the swamps talented enough to return her to her former glory. They relied heavily on herbs and splints: traditional medicines for traditional injuries. These things couldn't fix the fragments of her bones that had been ripped apart.
It had been suggested to him that they try some of the more populated areas near Noelani. Perhaps one of their elders was gifted in such a way that they wold be able to do more for Joena. ...But that wasn't the case. The Kaha'iko relied on very similar healing strategies as the Menehune. They were, however, slightly more familiar with the landwalkers than the solitary Menehune. The Kaha'iko elders had said that the landwalkers appeared far more adept with magic than anyone in Kahikina. If it were possible to heal Joena, the Earthlings would know how.
Rewi's parents balked at the suggestion. They were the ones who'd harmed her; why on Noelani should they expect landwalkers to heal her?
But it was the only suggestion they had. The landwalkers were certainly dangerous. Their weapons and magic could terrorize a Kahikinan who made an enemy of them, even if Earthlings did have quite a small stature... But they didn't need to be enemies. They could just as easily be teachers and comrades to those who were willing to learn.
Rewi's family was not willing to learn. Their daughter had been crippled by landwalker haste and thoughtlessness. There was no trust or respect left to be able to learn from them.
And even Rewi was frightened of them, to some extent. He'd wandered too close, and even though he'd meant no harm, he and his sister had been attacked. Violently. It was frightening to think how quickly and easily it had happened, and there was nothing to say it wouldn't happen again... But every time he watched his sister trudge through the house, trying to maintain her composure but clearly depressed, it felt like it was his duty to make it up to her. If he had ever believed that he had to do something, that he was the only one who had to do this, it was now.
Rewi would go to the land of the Earthlings.
He wasn't sure if he had the capacity to learn the magic that may be able to heal his sister, but he could find someone who did have that knowledge and bring them to Joena. If it was impossible to undo the damage, then at least he had tried. At least he hadn't done nothing. Because this time, Rewi could not fathom doing nothing.
He didn't know what he'd have to do to get to Earthling lands. He didn't know what he'd have to do to get close to them now, but he could try. He could learn to defend himself against them and use the same skills the Earthlings worked so hard to hone. Maybe he wouldn't be able to do anything immediately. Just the journey around Kahikina had tested him almost more than he'd been able to prepare for, so one to wherever the Earthlings had come from would surely be even more treacherous.
He should be diligent in his studies and make sure that he was well-prepared. Joena would be counting on him, so he couldn't take as many risks as he had when he'd been on his own.
When it came to this, he would have to work hard.
