Whispers of a strange, new underwater race were beginning to float through Chibale. At first many of the Alkidikes ignored such rumors and claimed that surely they were just fantastical stories told by some earthlings. Perhaps a bard at some settlement had gotten carried away one night while spinning tales while some fools believed them. The possibilities were endless for how the Kahikana stories came to be but it was harder to believe that such a race actually existed. Beings who could breathe underwater and lived most of their lives in the deep oceans and rivers? It was peculiar indeed.
Rumors could not be ignored forever. Eventually the Sisters realized that the stories of fantasy which they thought would fade away over time were becoming more and more common. They were quickly learning that the race of the Kahikana were not a myth or legend but actually existed. Such facts baffled many while others were eager to try and find out more by either venturing into the earthling territories or by going overseas themselves. Danika had already watched Sisters set sail for the new island in Belrea and the sudden introduction of even more lands was baffling. They had already chosen their new island in Belrea but the mystic was truly curious about what Kahikana would add to their world. Were they a peaceful race? How far did their reach stretch through the deeper waters? Would any of their kind be closer to Belrea? Closer to the new tree?
Sighing, Danika rubbed her temples again. It was later in the afternoon, the sun's rays slowly dimming as the great orb began its descent through the skies, but there was plenty of time for one last walk along the shores of Chibale. Danika had opted to take a walk to clear her mind from the buzz of today's conversations about the Kahikana and secretly hoped that once again she could encounter a kindred soul to speak with.

Vermina stood in the shallows, letting the cool water lap up around her knees. She had spent her whole life swimming in these waters without concern. It was good training, and quite enjoyable. She could even interact with the occasional sea life, and was relatively confident in the lack of monsters. Lately though, the world had burst open.
Aisha's seed was growing strong in Belrea, but there was even more new life being found. Deep under the water, there was life much like themselves!
Well, that was the rumor, at least.
It was certainly hard to believe that anyone like them could breathe under the water! Yet, look at what a simple change in location had done to Aisha's daughters! Those Elarians were similar but completely different as well! The stories of the Kahikans seemed to be stories, but every story had a basis of truth.
Now, how much of it was truth was the big question. Her dark eyes slid over the horizon, wondering where exactly these underwater beings were. Could they really be hidden in the depths of the waters near Chibale? What if they were cruel? But what if they were nice? ..but what if they were cruel?
She looked down when something bumped her leg, quite impressed that she had not jumped out of her own skin considering where her thoughts had been going. Smiling, she bent over and plucked up the small tortoise that had run into her. "What do you think? Is it really safe out there?" she asked with a little smirk as the tortoise wiggled its legs in the air. Wouldn't things be easier if she could talk to animals and find out from them what was going on in the rest of the world?

Ah, this was nice. The mystic leaned her head back and enjoyed the light sea breeze that floated along the shore. There was only one thing that could make her late afternoon walk more enjoyable and Danika couldn't help the smile that formed on her lips when she spotted a familiar figure further ahead. Biting the inside of her cheek sheepishly, Danika glanced about to check for any other spectators and was thankful to see that no one else was roaming the shores tonight. She felt a little bit like her younger self, before everything forced her to quickly take up the mantle of head mystic, and Danika slowly and quietly walked along the shore so that she could observe Vermina and see exactly what the other Sister was up to. Ever so quietly she slipped into the water, the gentle waves rolling against her calves as she approached.
Amusement and curiosity flickered across her features as she overheard the questions to the small tortoise, "They say it is a much safer world now. But is there anyway to truly know unless you go and find out for yourself?" She found herself responding lightly as she moved forward a bit more in the water and then stood still a couple of feet away from Vermina, "Though I would say for the little one it is still a dangerous world indeed. She's brave for facing it every day." Her dark gaze studied her friend thoughtfully. What was Vermina thinking about to ask such questions exactly? The question lingered on Danika's lips but she hesitated. Was Vermina thinking of leaving Chibale? The thought surprisingly didn't settle so pleasantly with Danika. But if it was something that her Sister wanted then she would support her because Danika wanted her Sisters to truly experience the world and grow. She would just feel sad and....perhaps even lonely without having the other Alkidike to speak with like this. Still, she couldn't help plastering on a small smile before finally asking, "May I ask why you are thinking about such things?"

Tickling a finger under the tortoise's rough little chin, Vermina nearly jumped with the introduction of a real voice. If she'd had a little less sense, she might have thought the animal in her hands was replying to her! Cheeks growing hot at being caught talking to an animal, she bashfully looked over to see Danika approaching.
Well, at least it wasn't her aunt or one of the more strict sisters.
"I suppose you have a point," she admitted, bending to let the tortoise free. It bobbed in the water for a moment before kicking to head along the shore. "Bravery comes in all shapes and sizes." Then there were those expected to have bravery, and found themselves lacking... She watched the creature swim a little further before she turned to face her new companion. The question only served to make her even more bashful, and she sighed with her hands clasping bashfully behind her back. "I suppose the rumors of the new culture, or, the newer culture, has me thinking quite a bit on how much we truly do not know about this world we have been living in for so long."

Danika watched the little tortoise bobbing away in the waters. If only she could imagine what it would be like to journey across the way like the little creature. The faintest flicker of a smile crossed her features. How ironic to feel that a small creature would hold more freedom in its limbs than she felt in her own. Danika's smile faded as she gazed back to Vermina thoughtfully, "I agree. It's amazing how much we continue to find out about our world every day." When she was just a girl the world had been much smaller, things so much simpler. Then within the last ten years or so it felt as if their world had doubled in size and Tendaji was no longer the sole continent in existence. The extremists had been sent to an island with strange new people, a new tree had bloomed new cousins, flying ships had come from a vast continent across the great oceans and now even another series of islands had been uncovered with races that breathed underwater. It was remarkable indeed.
Crouching, Danika cupped her hands beneath the cool waters and watched as the liquid slowly escaped from her clasped fingers, "Sometimes I feel like the whole world is spinning too quickly for us lately. So many changes are happening and with the new races it doesn't feel like it's going to stop anytime soon." Her lips curved upwards into a small almost sad smile, "A lot of Sisters are being inspired to travel as a result. I know even I am thankful for whenever someone comes back to share new information with me about our growing horizons." She peeked towards Vermina, "How are you feeling about the new world? Does this new race intrigue you as well? Could you imagine living underwater...it definitely would be a strange world to behold."

Amazing and a little overwhelming! Some days the widening world gave her hope, and then others it just made her concerned. What wonders awaited discovery, but one couldn't avoid the mirror thought of the terrors that might lie in wait for being found as well. Vermina nodded slowly, looking over the horizon. She knew a few of those that had left to find the answers, and it was always a relief to see them return with news.
"I feel.. many things, I think." She pursed her lips thoughtfully. "It is difficult to pinpoint a particular reaction to voice. Intrigued is certainly one word, though." Pushing her hair from her face, she looked over to Danika and smiled lightly. "My imagination does allow for such, but I doubt the accuracy." She bent down and swung her hand through the surface of the water, creating a thick ripple that rolled away from her. Danika seemed able to lift her moods without even trying! "I find it difficult to see those living under the water looking much like us, but I hear that they are not so different. What I can't imagine is what they must think of us living on land!"

But was Vermina intrigued enough to want to go and explore the new islands? Danika found the question stuck in her throat. Why was she so afraid to ask? Still as she continued listening to Vermina, the mystic could not help but to smile, "We must be truly strange for them. Imagine races that cannot breathe underwater?" She shook her head with a laugh, "They must live in a very different world indeed." She studied the water thoughtfully before moving further along, the water rising slowly towards her hips, "I've always enjoyed how calming the water can be but I've never imagined what it is like beneath the surface myself." Now that she was away from the stress of the arguing Sisters the Alkidike found herself relaxing, the tension leaving her shoulders and the playful personality from her younger years coming through.
"Do you think we should try to see what it would be like here?" She questioned teasingly before taking a gulp of air and moving so that she could slip beneath the surface of the cool waters. Thankfully years of swimming practice allowed her to easily float beneath the surface, her hands easily skimming along the sandy bottom. It was hard to see beneath the surface, but she could try to imagine what it must be like to actually live under the waters. Smiling, small bubbles escaping her lips, Danika's fingers wrapped around a small shell before she emerged from the waters once more.

Vermina chuckled lightly and nodded. Anything new was met with curiosity, wonder, and wariness. Of course, it went both ways. Land dwellers observing the strange water dwellers, and the water dwellers watching the strange land dwellers. She was rather content not being on those front lines. She liked what she knew.
It didn't stop her own curiosity though! Looking over to Danika with surprise, she couldn't help laughing with delight at the suggestion. With a deep breath, she followed suit and dove under the surface. The water stung her eyes when she tried opening them, but she pushed through. It wasn't her first time trying to see under the surface. She swam further from the shore, popping up where her feet just barely touched the soft bottom for a gasp of air. "I can see why breathing under the surface would be a nice trait to have," she mused with a smirk.

Danika laugh, "Agreed." She replied as she shook her head, her dreads flinging water about them, "I wonder if being on land is like that for them? Could you imagine not being able to breathe air?" Her antenna flicked at the thought before she smiled, "Though it is pretty fun to at least swim around. I think I would miss living on land too much if I were to start living underwater." She had drifted along with the waves towards the deeper waters, her toes barely touching the sands and the Alkidike was tempted to dive beneath the surface again. There was just something relaxing about being beneath the cool waters. It was serene beneath the waves save for when one needed to breathe once more.
Her fingers tightened around the shell in her hand thoughtfully, "I suppose it wouldn't hurt to explore a bit more." She teased lightly with a rare grin towards Vermina, "If we cannot venture there ourselves at least we can still enjoy the waters of our own home." Danika slipped beneath the surface once more, her kicks carrying her deeper beneath the surface until finally she emerged again with some more shells in her hands. If anything Danika would agree that the Kahikana had beautiful accessories in their world, the delicate and colorful shells in her hands attested to that.

Head cocking slightly, Vermina tried to imagine it. She had heard there was land over in Kahikina, but she had no idea if the sea creatures ever ventured onto it. Did they enjoy brief explorations of the land like she enjoyed ducking under the water's surface? Imagining a whole world of life was intimidating enough! "I would prefer to be able to do both," she admitted. She loved the land, but spending more time under the water sounded splendid!
Watching Danika, she couldn't help her smile warming again. She was glad that she got to see this side of the mystic. Always a helper, she liked knowing that Danika was comfortable enough around her to let the usual stresses of leadership go for at least a short time. It was quite sweet to see...
Feeling her cheeks heat up, she quickly dove under the water again to hide the blush. This time, her hands raked through the sandy bottom as well and came back up with a rock worn smooth by the tides. "We should all make sure to take time for our home lands," she said, brushing the stone's dark surface gently. A small smile lifted, recalling a similar conversation from before. "As curious as I am... I can see there is still much that I can learn here. I believe I will continue letting our more adventurous sisters explore away from home." Like with the new tree in Belrea, Vermina knew she would go if called. Still, the desire for home remained stronger in her heart.

Danika nodded in agreement. She would love to be able to do both as well. Even just being able to swim like this was relaxing enough for the mystic. Maybe one day they could figure out a way to breathe underwater themselves, even if just for a little while, but for now she was content to just swim. Danika was not one to give up the feeling of land beneath her feet and she especially could not imagine an afternoon without climbing up and resting in the branches of the great trees on Chibale. What if they had been an underwater race? Would Aisha have bloomed beneath the ocean? Danika wondered at how differently everything would have been then. Would their lotus blooms float above the surface like the smaller flowers that decorated the still waters here and there? Her thoughts swirled with all the possibilities as she twisted and turned through the waters.
Swimming through the waters so that she could get closer to Vermina, Danika glanced at what the other Alkidike had found, "The ocean does have beautiful treasures but so does our homelands." She commented thoughtfully as she glanced towards Vermina, a hint of a flush threatening to decorate her cheeks before she looked down at her hands and held out her shells, "I wonder if accessories could be made of these? They must be very colorful overseas if they are like our own oceans here." Relief had bloomed in her chest at Vermina's words and Danika felt almost embarrassed by how happy the words had made her, "I am glad to hear that." She admitted quietly, "I would not stop you if you did want to explore one day but I would miss you, Vermina."

Would all of the rocks under the water be smooth like this one, or would they be rugged like the cliffs eroding from the wind? She could easily imagine it was both. How tall could their rocks be though? Gravity was probably not as big of a concern as it was on land.
Looking over the presented collection, Vermina nodded and plucked one cream colored shell up for inspection. "They all would make beautiful accessories. Perhaps not for the younglings though. They would be broken within moments," she chuckled, setting the shell back down. Perhaps shells from deep under the water would be less fragile? The thoughts of shells were quickly interrupted by Danika's words, a bashful swell rising within herself. She managed to keep her smile light and gave the mystic's fingers a light squeeze before pulling back. Oh Aisha, had that been too forward?! "Thank you. ...I would miss you as well. The occasions may be rare, but I enjoy when we are able to share each other's company." Now that had probably been too forward. It was one thing for the mystic to say it to a clan sister, but for an average sister to say it to the mystic? She could practically feel the disapproving gaze of the elders burning into her head! More importantly though, would Danika take offense?

A laugh left Danika's lips, "I suppose you are right. I should probably keep my collection away from any small and wandering hands." Maybe one day she would have younglings to worry about but for now the mystic rarely saw them once their blooms were gifted to the expectant mothers. Mostly she watched from afar, wondering what it must be like to have a family like some of the other Sisters. Even as a child she had been alone...the thought made her frown before she shoved the thought aside. She was in too good of a mood to mope about such things, especially with Vermina here.
A surprised flush decorated Danika's cheeks at the sudden touch, her legs almost forgetting their efforts to tread in the water. It was over all too soon as Vermina quickly pulled away again. After a silent moment Danika finally found her voice again, albeit a bit softer than usual, "I feel the same." She confessed as she studied Vermina thoughtfully, "Honestly I was hoping to find you today. Your presence makes my day feel much brighter." She smiled shyly before swimming the few inches closer so that she was right before Vermina. A few shells floated away from her fingertips before she slowly reached out her now freed hands to reach for Vermina's hands so that she could give them a squeeze in return, "Thank you for spending time with me." Vermina's presence had even made the topic of the new islands more enjoyable than listening to the Elders discussing over what to do next. It was amazing just how much lighter Danika felt now that she had spent time with Vermina and now knew that her friend was not leaving Chibale for the new islands.

A warm and fuzzy feeling fluttered through her at the admission. She was a server of the clan, and was on nice terms with pretty much everyone... but that was about it. Her list of closer friends was limited, and to hear that someone as special as the mystic enjoyed being with her was a joy. Then the admission continued, Vermina's chest heating further as Danika edged closer. Slowly, her shock eased back to allow a smile. "I appreciate your time," she replied, resisting the urge to just pull Danika into a full hug. It was a wonderful little moment with her friend that was worth savoring.
The world was expanding all around her, but she could handle it with friends like Danika at her side.
