Paracelsian knew he needed to get re-acclimated to patrolling every night. This was what he got for sleeping in for a while, he supposed. The road felt a bit hard on his feet for some reason, which bothered him, because it wasn't like glamour shoes wore out. He was really, really, out of it, apparently.

Which was bad, because he felt a prickly bright aura not too far from the street he was walking down. A not so small prickly bright aura. That was no senshi, nor was it a Page. A Squire was afoot. Depending on who was on the other side, he could be in for a rude awakening.

Still, he didn't want to immediately get off on the wrong foot. Walking towards the aura, he raised one hand in a tentative greeting. Something like hailing a ship that could be friend or foe. Would the enemy open communications, or would they be unresponsive?

Pendour had been out two nights. She'd found two Negaverse agents, one each time. By the way she felt a shadow-dark aura at the edge of her senses after only a short walk, it seemed that tonight was going to bring a third. Had there been this many before, or had she just been avoiding them for so long that she couldn't remember?

Well, she wouldn't avoid them now. She'd run if it came to that, but not before she even saw who the aura belonged to. It still took willpower to keep walking towards the aura, but not quite as much willpower as it had taken the night before. She did carry her ocarina. It was starting to feel more and more at home in her hands.

As she approached this one, something about him seemed familiar. It wasn't his face, or rather his eyes, which were chemical-bright blue in a way she would have remembered. No, he was a stranger, but the colors and the little medical details on his outfit made her think of one of her senshi friends.

It sent a strange coldness to her chest. Sadness, maybe, to see reflections of someone she knew in someone so broken. She waved anyway.

"Oh, um, hello," she said, and swallowed. "What brings you out tonight?" She had her guesses, but she would let him answer.

A friendly greeting was a good start. It felt good to not be attacked on sight. Paracelsian nodded in acknowledgement and tipped his cap a little. "The usual," he replied. "Villainy, extortion of energy, trying to figure out where the lieutenants went. It would be nice if they didn't step face first into trouble."

Paracelsian gave the Squire a looking over. Something was wrong with her eye, some kind of painfully obvious injury. He put his efforts towards not staring at that, instead gauging her stance and potential combat readiness. Honestly, she seemed nice enough, and he visibly hesitated to ask her something, his lips parting slightly but nothing coming out. He was, of course, going to ask her to donate energy, but he felt kind of bad about it. It probably wouldn't hurt to ask, but instead he waited for her to make the next move. What would happen would happen.

Villian? That was strange. Pendour was used to odd, twisted excuses from the members of the Negaverse, or irrational anger, and questions every once in a while, but not such directness.

"So you know you're a villain?" she asked, still holding her ground, but she relaxed the smallest bit, letting the ocarina drop away from her face. It shouldn't have been a comfort. Who knew what kind of violence he would be shameless about if he had accepted that role.

It wasn't that he was completely shameless, though. She saw the careful way that he looked away from her eye.

Well, maybe she could be direct, too. She looked over him again, her brows coming together slightly. It was deeply sad. "Does that make you happy?"

If the irrational anger came anyway, she had her magic.

Paracelsian shrugged at the barbed question. The question of heroes and villains was out the window to a degree. There were only people who made existence hard for others and those that didn't. Maybe. "Mm, well, what you consider villainy is simply the preservation of a way of life for some. It's sad, but it's true." He noticed her stance relaxing, just a bit. A more opportunistic agent would have definitely taken advantage of that for an ambush strike. He wasn't that agent though, was he?

Even with the voice of the agent he could be in the back of his mind, he couldn't bring himself to strike. In fact, the Squire's next question sent his urge to attack into a screeching halt. For all he knew, she was waiting for his guard to drop first and she was tougher than she looked (who knows how she really injured her eye?), but he took the bait all the same. "That's a good question," he murmured, pausing to pull the inquiry over in his mind. "I... can't say it does. I'm not without regrets." He hit upon something here. "Let me ask you this, though. Does it make you happy when your people harm mine? Do you really think it's a victory when a senshi or Knight manages to kill a Negaverse agent?"

Almost unconsciously, he shook his head. "It would be nice if people were reasonable and we could just be as we are, but it's plain to see that's not the case." Though his mouth was hidden by his scarf, his own brows were knitting. There was a deep sort of sadness that he couldn't quite hide here.

Oh. Here were the twisting words. Pendour brought her ocarina back up to her chest, some small protection, although she wasn't quite scared. If anything this was more what she expected.

"What way of life do you mean?" she asked. Was this man the other side of the coin from the other agent she had met? Was he the one who had been given all of the positive affirmation, instead? It still hardly seemed an excuse for supporting such an organization, but she knew it might be difficult for him to see that.

Her eyes went wide as wide at his next question. "No!" She said. "No. Violence is always a tragedy." Maybe she shouldn't have said that, shouldn't have dropped the hint that she wouldn't even defend herself, but it was the truth. She could never support hurting another person. "Killing is one of the worst tragedies, and a failure on top of it. There's no victory in that."

She knew people who saw it as the only way to stop the spread of chaos, and in a tiny, ever so grudging way, she could respect that, but she would never agree.

"But only my actions are really mine to control. I don't regret the choices I've made." There had been a few mistakes, but not ones that had hurt anyone but herself. She was slowly learning to live with them.

She swallowed and wondered if there was a way to continue on that wouldn't make him angry. Questions seemed a little gentler. "Do you think it's unreasonable to stand against the tragedies that Chaos brings?"

Paracelsian's eye contact was going all over the place. These were tough questions, ones that required heavy thought. Maybe he was being too honest in his answers, but he got the feeling that the "wrong" answer wouldn't earn him too much of a reprisal. "Some people live their lives, yet have the 'misfortune' to be powered by Chaos. There's more to an agent, or even a senshi, than their affiliation." He felt compelled to elaborate a bit further, even if it blew his cover some. "Heh. We can't just forget the powered life, though I'm sure people have tried. It would be nice if senshi could do what they did and the Negaverse agents went about their daily lives without drastic conflict, wouldn't it?"

The sudden reaction to his counter question nearly made Paracelsian jump, though he realized that her reaction was merely strong, not dangerous. "I agree with you, though I feel that some others don't. Those are the dangerous ones, the ones that perpetuate the cycle of people killing each other to eliminate threats. They exist in both Chaos and Order. As I see it, preservation is a vital goal for any powered person, not just of others, but of the self as well. I think, perhaps, it would behoove all of us to focus on living our lives the best we can without making disasters for others."

Pendour's next line made Paracelsian wrinkle his nose, though it was an involuntary sort of gesture of mild irritation, if it could be called that. "No regrets? You've either been very lucky or you've twisted your moral compass to defend yourself. It must be nice to be pure enough to have no regrets." The sharp bitterness in his voice surprised him and he wasn't sure why. He shook his head. "No. It's not unreasonable to stand against what Chaos brings. However, you ought to consider that some Chaos people are standing against what Order brings in return." He couldn't help but feel that this woman was a bit too convinced of Chaos's evil and Order's goodness, or at least Chaos as an attacker and Order as a defender.

He did seem different, in some ways. It was a wonder that she hadn't already recieved a blade in her back for her questions. She many officers wouldn't have hesitated with that. Still, she tried to be careful, tried to look up at him with soft eyes, like a toothless puppy showing its belly.

She still spoke, though. "You talk like Chaos is something passive, something that happens," she said. "I know that officers are not always," she searched for a word, "Honest about things when recruiting, but once someone finds out what Chaos does to people, or if they're asked to hurt someone, then they are making the choice to stay." There was the smallest bit of steel in her voice at that, but she softened again to add, "And it can be left."

He went on to talk about agents and senshi, and she began to wonder if he knew she was a knight before something more important caught her attention.

"Lucky?"

Pendour had a habit of keeping her bad side tilted away from people, to hide things as much as she could, but now she she turned towards him so that her scars were unmistakable, even in the low light. "I've paid for my choices, my mistakes" she said, voice soft as soft. "Not with so much guilt, but I've paid."

She turned back, so she could look at him, and she nodded. "It's true. I'm biased in favor of Order, maybe," she said. It's from what I've seen of Order and the Negaverse, though. I wouldn't say-" she went silent all at once, her lips pressing together as she met his eyes. No. She had to be careful with contradicting him. "I'll listen to your perspective, if you'd like." She hesitated before adding, "Do you carry regrets?"

Paracelsian sucked in a breath and let it out slowly. "You are not making this easy for me," he muttered, a small edge creeping into his voice. "I've learned that purification erases memories and identities. That alone can terrify some people into staying where they are." He wasn't terribly fussed about it anymore, but he remembered that he had been for a while at some point.

The building tension was readily apparent in his body and what could be seen of his face. "You've paid, you say..." He pursed his lips behind his scarf and shook his head, one hand tensing into a fist. "So, you lost an eye and gained some scars. Different mistakes have different prices. Maybe foolishness was what you paid for, but me..."

The Captain was becoming more agitated as he went on. Super Sailor Bezel's lifeless face flashed before him. "Yes, I carry regrets. A senshi's life was the price for my current rank. It was in self defense, and maybe I should have broken the cycle and returned her starseed, but I have no way of knowing that she wouldn't have tried to kill me all over again if I did." He knew that wasn't going to go over well, and that only stressed him further. "I could say I nearly paid for just going about my business with my life. But the actual cost was much deeper. A piece of my being was exchanged for continuing to exist." The irony struck him: didn't purification take a piece of one's being in exchange for continued existence? The realization did not feel good.

At this point, Paracelsian's voice was an intense hiss, irritation and stress and pleading all blended into one. "You're concerned about 'what Chaos does to people?' If I had my way, that wouldn't be a concern. People would live as they are, no matter what they awakened as: senshi, knight, agent of Chaos." He shifted into the truth of the matter: his tattered and foolish plan to reform the Negaverse. "I wanted to make the Negaverse more reasonable. I wanted the next generation of Lieutenants to use their heads when going about the city. I wanted to make it so that people would stop killing each other, but the only way to do that was to climb the ranks so people would listen. And to do that, I had to kill a senshi."

Now Paracelsian was gritting his teeth, biting back a scream, a wail, some unleashing of pure emotion. Both fists clenched now. Would he strike the Squire? Probably not. His efforts were all going towards keeping himself together right now, and that was all on him, not her. "I..." Even with one syllable, his voice was trembling. "This. This is all useless, isn't it?" He made no attempt to elaborate further. If he opened his mouth again, he didn't know what would come out.

Something was changing in his voice and his face, although even if Pendour had been good at reading emotions it would have been hard to tell exactly what he was thinking behind that mask. As it was, she took half a step backwards just to be safe.

And then she listened, as she'd said she would.

Pointing out her eye seemed to have flipped some switch in him, and even though he didn't seem to understand the heaviness of it, she swallowed and tried not to let it bother her. No anger came to her face, even when she learned he'd killed. There was still the underlying, gun-shy fear. Her heart was beating fast as a rabbit's, but mostly as she listened, there was deeper and deeper sorrow.

If it was sorrow for the senshi girl, or for him, or for all of the systems and cycles of violence, she wasn't sure. There wasn't time to untangle that right now, not with this agent starting to unravel right in front of her.

When he finished, she risked two questions, with eyes that were soft as soft and a voice that was softer still. "What will they ask of you, before you are a General? Will they listen to you, then?"

And before that could sink in so much and stoke the coals even more, she brought the ocarina to her lips and began to play, channeling her calming magic. She cut her song short, maybe a third of what it could have been, but with luck it would be enough to take the edge off.

Then, still gentle, she asked, "Can I tell you my story?"

Sami-Fire
When Pendour plays her ocarina, the negative emotions of those within five feet of her fade and are replaced with a feeling of pleasant relaxation. One can shake the effect with enough concentration, but it can serve as a distraction for those who would do Pendour harm. She can channel this magic for 45 seconds.

Paracelsian opened his mouth to say something, anything, but then Pendour began to play her ocarina, and all of the raw emotion and indignation seemed to fall away, breaking apart and dissolving back into the turbulent sea of soul that it emerged from. What shifted into its place was a feeling of stillness, of calm, almost of healing. He had no doubts that the Squire was playing no ordinary song; this was definitely Knight magic. Despite a vague nag of feeling disgruntled about being magically subdued, he did not resist. The feeling of peace was welcome. The tension slipped out of him, and he almost seemed to droop, as though all the emotion was what was holding him up.

He'd missed her inquiry of what Chaos would ask of him, and if they would listen to him. It sort of drifted over him as Pendour played her ocarina and her magic. He didn't think he'd be able to answer the questions properly anyway. He did answer her more recent request, however. "Yes. Tell me your story. If you feel comfortable with it, I would also like to know your name." He genuinely wished to know the identity of this compelling Squire for a few reasons. He was unsure if he wanted to log her in the records, but he had another idea in mind. If he wanted to communicate with her again, he could possibly harangue another Knight (or maybe even a senshi, depending on how their communication system worked) to send her a message.

"Oh," she said, giving him a half-smile. "I'm Pendour, Squire of Neptune. Hi." A handshake still seemed a little risky, so she waved instead, one hand staying firmly on the ocarina. The magic seemed to have done something. He no longer looked so wound that he was about to snap.

She took a deep breath, and then began. "One night, when I was a page, I was out like this. I didn't seek out the Negaverse, then, not really. I was thinking of going to space, or meeting up with a friend. A general found me anyway." She swallowed. "I could tell there was too much Chaos in him right away. There was something in his eyes, and the shadows around him were, um," she gestured in front of herself with her free hand, slowly, as if the air was made of water. "Thick? Later I found out he was a half-youma."

She paused, not wanting to wind things so tightly again, but she had to do something to get through to him. "By the time he was there, I didn't think running would do much. I tried talking to him, instead." Her gaze was focused somewhere far past the captain."Maybe I was too forward about purification. Maybe I could have run. Those are some of the regrets I carry." Maybe they were nothing compared to taking a life, but they felt heavy to her, heavy as stones. "Anyway, he attacked me in the end." She ran a finger over her scars, although the prosthetic stayed firmly in its socket, this time. The Negaverse didn't need to know for certain that she was half blind. "He left me bleeding in the dirt. I think he liked watching me hurt." Her voice went even softer, and oddly thin.

"I've thought about that night a lot. I've tried to think about it from different perspectives, but even under most war ethics, where killing enemies and torturing people for information are acceptable, it doesn't make sense. There was nothing practical about it. It was just cruel as cruel." Her fingers were shaking on her ocarina, but she blinked and then met his eyes squarely. "I don't think it would have been like that without the Chaos in him."

"Pendour... I will not forget your name so easily." That much was true. He would not forget the name of the knight who had challenged him so thoroughly. Paracelsian listened to the story, pursing his lips behind his scarf. A half-youma general sounded like a distinct Negaverse persona, and yet he had not heard of such an individual. "I can agree with you on one thing: that this general behaved in an unnecessarily cruel manner. However, I have not heard of such a person yet." A beat passed. "I can only hope that someone has disposed of him already and that is why I have not heard of him. It may seem incongruous, but he would have no place in my ideal Negaverse."

Ideal. Right. That was the issue right there. "I will see what I can find in the database about the general that hurt you. I may not be able to do much if he still exists and is active, but at the very least I can monitor him." He nearly said "keep an eye out," but caught himself. He took a few steps away, shaking his head. "I will let you go tonight, Pendour. If you ever wish to donate your energy for my cause one night, you may seek out Captain Paracelsian of the Negaverse. I've heard a rumor that Knights can send a message to anyone as long as they know their name, so... now you have mine."

He hesitated before continuing on, but all the same he was not sure that he wanted to linger in this space much longer. He continued walking away; if the Squire wanted to pursue him, he would not object, though he preferred that she stay where she was.

Pendour was never sure what reactions her story would bring. So far, they had tended towards anger or sympathy, but she had yet to tell another agent about that general. She kept eye contact, but Paracelsian's face was hard to read under the mask. His voice remained steady. The fact that he had not seen this general was news to Pendour. It sent a wave of something down her spine, a feeling that she would have to pick apart later.

"Maybe," she said, her own voice steady in return. "He seemed like the type who would have a lot of enemies." She knew of at least one senshi who had been wanting to kill him.

Or he could still be lurking, just beyond the shadows. The words about monitoring him did not bring Pendour much comfort. She knew that Paracelsian's ideals would not go very far in under Chaos, a force that only seemed interested in twisting, draining, and breaking people. That was something that he would have to learn to see on his own, though. She nodded when he said his goodbyes.

"It was nice to meet you. I hope to see you again," she said, and then, with a deeper nod, added, "Truly." There was hope for this one, she thought.

"I hope the Negaverse does not ask too much of you until then." He was already walking away, but she kept her voice quiet. "For now, um, have a good night?"

She gave a small wave and then turned to walk her own way.
