It was safe to say that after the last few weeks he was entitled to a break, thus it had come as some relief to him that he was finally on vacation. That meant no sudden call outs to awkward areas of the city and no exasperating conversations with the more trying citizens. It wasn't that he disliked his job, on the contrary he did enjoy it and he was damn good at it but his normal day job combined with his new 'job' was getting to him.

...Settling in to the role wasn't the easiest thing in the world for him.

Thus, on this particularly mild evening he has walked through the park, stopped briefly at the nearest food truck, and then promptly made his way further in to enjoy his meal. He'd selected a slightly out of the way bench, but not so far out that he couldn't people watch, and this was where Regula would be found by any passerby.

Food carefully positioned on his lap he comfortably tucked into it while admiring the view and the general antics that the younger generation tended to get up to. For example, they were up to their usual tricks of using their skateboards to grind down the steps even though they had been told more than once not to... But teenagers didn't necessary compute the more nuanced and final details of civil engineering and by extension, the damage that their hobby actually did to steps.

Least they were having fun though, right?

A small part of him felt he probably should intervene and shoo them away but for once he just wanted that peace and quiet he'd been denied in the last few weeks. He'd die on the skateboarding hill some other time!

Sometimes, Bernard wondered if his owner's weren't missing something in their heads. He had woken up as a human, which had freaked him out at first, not that he was over it yet, but when his owner's had seen him, they had quite readily accepted the fact that he was a friend of their cat. He had then told them that "Bernard" had invited him to stay as he didn't have anywhere to go for a while. And they just... accepted it, treated him like he was a part of the family as a human, even giving him some cloths, and Bernard wondered what had happened.

Eventually, after having somewhat gotten use to the feel of socks and shoes upon his feet, had decided that he would go to the park today to see it from a "Human" point of view. He did appreciate being taller, but other than that he wasn't sure if he liked being human.

However, it wasn't until he was knocked down by some punk on a skateboard that he decided he really didn't like being a human. At least if he were still a cat, no one would have questioned the kitty scratching the human teenager to shreds! He could only growl to himself a bit as the teens ran away, and he realized that he needed to get up. It was hard as a cat, would it be just as hard as when he was human?

And that was where his indifference ended, no sooner had he slipped the fork into his mouth than he was greeted with the scene of inconsiderate teenagers knocking an unfortunate soul over. There was a reason those kids hated him when he was in uniform, but at the very least, he had a knack for getting them to move on so they didn't hurt anyone accidentally. He soon closed the lid of his takeaway box and rose to his feet, striding towards the prone Bernard.

"Are you all right?" he pulled the fork from his mouth as he drew nearer. The man seemed perfectly capable of getting up on his own but he'd offer his hand if he needed to.

"They have a bad habit of that, not sure why they won't just go to skate parks that the city has actually built for them," he added with a wry smile.

Aware that certain folks had specific comfort levels regarding personal space he didn't move much further forward, but his presence did seem to be deterring any teenagers from coming back...evidently they recognised him even when he wasn't in uniform!

When he heard the question Bernard couldn't help but send a glare in the direction that the teenagers ran it. "I could be better, but thank you." He replied as he took the offered hand. Although he remembered how to walk, he didn't remember it being this hard to keep his balance!

He brushed some of the dirt that had gotten on his clothes while saying, "Well, they're bound to go anywhere they aren't allowed to. I suppose it's a different location than the skate park, but the park would be more appropriate for their, err, tricks." Was that what they did on skateboards called? He didn't know and didn't really care to. The sooner he got back to his kitty form the better.

Unfortunately he had been found by a human, which meant that he couldn't explain what was going on or if the person who had found him could help with his predicament in some way. Ah well, this would all go away ... hopefully soon.

"Thank you for the help. I wasn't expecting to be pushed down like that." Not that he could have gotten out of the way quickly if he was a cat either. He supposed he might as well introduce himself to his helper. "I'm Bernard. Thank you very much once again Mr...?"

"I don't think anyone expects to be pushed down by anyone," Regula shook his head and released the man once he was on his feet. With no signature to reveal him, Bernard's identity was safe... and surprisingly, so was Regula's. Admittedly they were probably on the same side and Regula could have been a useful ally in these particular times but sometimes fate simply wasn't in your favour.

"At the very least, I'll have to make a note to be a bit more of a nuisance again when I'm passing through," he conceded. He'd left them alone for a while, in fact, walking through parks hadn't necessarily been on his patrol routes lately but if this was how they were behaving then he may have to swing by occasionally just to spook them back to the right areas of the park!

...Ah, the joys of the community part of his job.

"Ah, you can call me Regula though," he cleared his throat. "A pleasure to meet you Bernard, although I generally don't plan to make acquaintances by helping them when they've been knocked over," he admitted. Truth be told, he would have preferred to make his friends through the normal means, through social calls and hobbies, alas it appeared today was not one of those days.

"If you have somewhere to go though I'm sure I can walk with you," he chuckled. "They know who I am so they'll probably keep their distance for now."

A pause and then he motioned to himself.

"Police officer, nothing nefarious," he added reassuringly. Suffice to say he did not hide in dark alleys and spook kids, nor did he sell them things they shouldn't be able to get hold of. At most, his notoriety came from being really annoying and particular about where they should or should not be hanging out!

Bernard sighed. "I just don't understand it myself." As a human at least. As a cat though he quite often got in others' way, mostly so that he could be cuddled, pet, or sit on a warm lap. He wasn't the kind to lay on the stairs though, he was too large for them.

"I don't have anywhere in particular, I was just wanting to enjoy a small walk in the park." As a human at least. He knew that even if he were to get some sort of human form, it would still have his cat ears and tail and well, that wasn't good for walking around with. At least if one didn't want the attention.

He twitches his mustache a bit, somewhat sad that it was no longer just part of his fur and instead felt quite scratchy. "I could use the company if you are willing, though I would understand if you didn't. You seemed to be in the middle of a meal." He had seen the man with the meal, and he wished he was still a cat so that he could have smelled it. Ah well, even if humans couldn't smell as well as cats, they did have opposable thumbs and the height to make up for it.

"It is certainly nice to meet you Regula. I like the name." He wasn't sure where it was from, or if it was just a nickname, but it was a nice name and fit the man in front of him. "I'd certainly feel quite a bit safer in the company of an officer." Bernard couldn't help but chuckle. Still, having someone who knew how to defend themselves as a human was a plus.

"I have nothing else to do," he replied honestly. He was off today and with no shifts to cover he had decided to give himself that breather and just relax. If someone felt more comfortable in his presence then he was happy to assist on this occasion. So long as Bernard didn't intend to take all of his food they would get along splendidly and to be perfectly honest, a bit of company would be nice.

...Well, company that didn't try to kill him.

"So long as you don't mind me eating while we walk," he chuckled and flicked open the carton again. Inside were french fries and what looked like curry sauce, it seemed that this particular man hadn't quite let his British tastes die out when he came to live here!

"This park has always been a good spot for everything," he added in agreement with Bernard's desire to wander through it. "I tend to jog here in the really early mornings as well, they have it lit up really well so it's pretty safe versus other spots and...as annoying as those kids are, they're the quieter bunch," he pointed out.

Suffice to say he'd been in a fair number of not so pleasant parks.

"And thank you, my parents are fairly traditional and fond of their roots," he added with a wry smile. He didn't mind his name in the slightest but it was a bit of a pompous one in comparison to something more normal like 'Adam'.

"Probably why they headed back home actually, had enough of the US and headed on back to the cold and rain..."

Bernard smiled. "Thank you, I truly appreciate it. And I don't mind at all." Well, if he wanted to keep his new walking companion that is. Personally he would have preferred sitting at a nice table soaking up the sun and trying some coffee or tea while in his human form. Would it taste any different? Did Mauvians have cat tastebuds or the same ones as humans? He wasn't sure if he wanted to find out.

He had wanted to reply that he had often napped in this park, but kept it to himself. He had mostly wandered this park as a cat and had taken quite a few naps, only to be quite rudely awakened at times by little children who either were quite gentle with him afterwards or wanted to hit him with sticks. He usually threw a beam or two at them, and couldn't help but chuckle as they ran towards their neglectful parents too glued to their phones and unwilling to believe that a cat could shoot laser beams.

"Mmm... there are many reasons to stay, but I also understand the desire to go back to your home too." He had no memories of his Homeworld, but he was sure that he would have preferred being back there instead of on this planet. At least, he was sure that is how most felt when they no longer lived where they had grown up. Unless one had terrible memories and just wanted to forget it all.

"Well, I'm sure they appreciate any calls that you make to them. Even if you're miles apart, we have lots of technology these days to still feel connected to our loved ones." Though he had only worked on some phones and communicators himself, he was still quite proud at the technological progress that humans had made, though he didn't quite like the consequences of the gathering of materials or how they set them up...

"It's not a bad place," he agreed with an idle smile. He wouldn't have called the UK his home on a personal level, he'd lived here far too long to feel the connection that his parents did to that nation. However it was a pleasant place to visit and it certainly had a rich history, it might be a part of his heritage but it wasn't something he traditionally focused on. He had more connections here, more riding on being here and even if he had been homesick for another place he wasn't entirely sure he could leave.

If he left, then who would stop the Negaverse?

"I'm sure they're happy though, it's certainly more their speed," he added. He spoke to them every now and then but generally his family tended to operate on the rule of assuming that everything was well when they were quiet. When someone became particularly conversational or needy with their family in his circle it tended to mean they needed extra support, they were down on their luck and just needed to be looked after for a while.

Regula, being the independent soul he was, had mostly just called his family during holiday periods to let them know he was alive and despite his mother's best efforts, he still hadn't met someone suitable enough to give her grandkids.

"You from around here yourself, or out of state?" His accent might have given him away but he couldn't quite place Bernard's, it seemed local enough and for all he knew Bernard might have one of those musical ears that picked up and held on to quirks from other accents by default.

From what Bernard had heard and read and watched about England, he might just find the country suitable to his speed to. Ah well, a cat could dream couldn't they? But living there would require way too much effort to go over. And besides, he was needed here. He needed to help Awaken Senshi, fix tech, and upgrade Senshi too. As much as he wanted to live a peaceful life of napping, eating, and watching mysteries, he knew he couldn't do it forever, especially if the world was to be saved.

"I'm... from around here." Well, technically he was. It was the only place he had known before he had awakened as a Mauvian and couldn't remember living anywhere else. Not even his home planet. "I tend to watch quite a few shows with different accents, sometimes it just sticks!" A bit too much perhaps, but he had needed to learn certain words and how to say them.

"Ha, so long as you pick one my mother would probably be satisfied!" Regula grinned, he'd had more than a couple of ribbings from his own parents in regards to his peculiar mix of British and American. Certain words always had a certain twang that gave away that he wasn't local, but at the same time if he went back to the UK, he always sounded like he wasn't quite from there either.

Quite apt really, considering a part of him wasn't from around here, not even remotely close to here in fact.

He did however seem to find a place that he wanted to sit down at, in a roundabout way Bernard would get his wish as Regula had selected a quieter gazebo to sit under. With benches carefully set out underneath it, they'd been set up with the specific purpose of providing shelter from the sun during the warmer months. They weren't terribly isolated and could people watch easily from this spot, they just wouldn't have any visitors of the skateboard variety as there was nothing to ping off.

"Nothing wrong with having a musical ear though, can be good for helping other people understand you," he pointed out. He had a point, the fact he had a slightly americanised accent helped him to communicate with those who were from out of town, his parents however, were likely to be misunderstood.

"Great for impressions as well if that's your chosen past time."

While Bernard quite enjoyed the walk, he was quite happy to be able to sit down again and just look around the park. He had to admit that it was quite different seeing it from a human view versus a cat's. Perhaps he would have to unlock his human form at some point to see it this way again. But he still wasn't in any hurry to do so.

He shook his head at the pastime suggestion by Regula but kept the smile on his face. "Ah, not qutie for me. But it is fun to see if I can guess where someone is from at times. I'm more into mysterious so if it in any way helps to solve the current case I'm investigating or whatever I am reading or watching, then that adds a bit of fun. I'm not a detective or anything, but it is a fun pastime. You must solve some mysteries too as a police officer right?"

"Eh, sort of..." He smiled wryly and peered out at the crowd as they bustled about before shaking his head. "I'm sure it all sounds quite glamorous from the outside but..." he shrugged. Sure, he liked his job a lot but that didn't necessarily mean he was anywhere close to what the cop shows seemed to imply.

"We do a lot more community work than murder mystery," he admitted and pursed his lips. "Although I've had my fair share of weird stuff happen, I think I've spent the better part of my career shepherding people out of harm's way and reminding kids that stairs aren't the best place to be trying to ride your bike down," he pointed out. His smile had grown warmer at that, a clear indication that he really did have a fondness for what he did, even if it could be fairly mundane.

"I'll take that over the mystery sometimes though, eventually that stuff does get to you and you end up a little - " he waved his hand a little and sighed. "Jaded, I suppose."

Bernard gave the man a small smile. Of course, he was in no shape to do any of the hard work that any officer's put in each day. Being an independent detective was quite a bit different compared to a police detective, but that didn't make Regula's job any less important.

"I think it takes a certain person. Either one who is already jaded or perhaps doesn't have quite the same attachments. Of course it also depends on the mysteries that they may be trying to solve as well. It's quite different if one is an expert in finding lost items versus solving mysteries. But I do agree, often times, even in the stories one may read, the detectives themselves are quite jaded. Even if they do everything to defend the innocent and find the guilty party, they do not come out of it thinking that everything is okay in the world."

But Bernard couldn't help but feel he was that way already. He didn't remember his past life, but he was sure that something had caused him to feel the way he had after he had first awakened as a Guardian Cat. He had used his weight as an excuse and was often reluctant to awaken others to be Senshi. Sure, he was still lazy, but not when it came to doing the right thing.

Awakening others wasn't easy though. They had to awaken those who were often too young, even children, to fight in a war that could possibly kill them. And every time Bernard awakened another, he knew that he was sending them to their possible deaths.

But would it have been any better for them to die without having a fighting chance? Were they more likely to die because they had been awakened? It was an answer that he didn't know if he wanted the answer to. But too many would be lost if they didn't have the fighters. It was a heavy burden, perhaps one that not too many Guardian Cats thought about.

Speaking of which, he was sure that he had gone suddenly quiet on his companion. "I'm sorry, I was just thinking about what you were saying. It reminded me of something... But on such a nice day as this, it's not the time to think about such sad things. One should truly try to enjoy life as much as possible in such a beautiful world. Even if that means they want to try riding bikes down stairs." He chuckled at the thought. Of course he didn't want anyone to get hurt doing so, but he found teenagers thinking it was a good idea to try out quite laughable.

"We might end up a little jaded and tired," Regula agreed with a small nod and twirled his fork in his fingers. "But in the end it keeps everyone safe, if we didn't do what we had to then things would be much worse," he mused. He certainly knew that his chosen career path had its problems as well, but he stood by what he said. While there were those who thrived on anarchy they were also the ones who tended to corrupt very quickly when presented with an opportunity for power.

...In the grand scheme of things he preferred to ensure everyone's safety, even if there were times when he wanted to go home and just shut the world out. At least if he and his colleagues took those abuses then no one else had to, you know?

Grim matters aside, he could only roll his eyes as Bernard mentioned the antics of the teenagers and the bikes, if only he knew how truly creative they could be sometimes. He'd have marvelled at their ingenuity if it wasn't for the fact they might break their necks or worse.

"I'd agree with enjoying a beautiful world but I'd sooner they didn't expedite their exit from it," he grinned. "You should see the things they do get up to, apparently they're even more crazy at the beach," he pointed out. He wasn't a lifeguard, but he'd certainly heard stories of some of those water sports and he could only begin to imagine some of the exasperation those lifeguards felt! Admittedly, that didn't mean Regula wouldn't half smile at the shared misery, but at least he didn't have to deal with it for once!

"I do wonder how we managed to get this far if we're all like that as kids," he admitted.
