His last experience here hadn't been very nice. He'd mended some mean doe, and she'd taken off without even a thank you. Davvyd was pretty sure that was the rudest doe he'd ever met ... Still pretty though. He called out to his companion. "Hope we don't run into that doe. She was a piece of work. But she was pretty. Can you believe I mended her leg, and she didn't even say thank you?"
"Sounds like she wasn't worth your time bud. If she was that rude she didn't deserve your attention anyway. Good of you to heal her though. That's just like a hero from the stories." The faery made his way back to Davvyd, and alighted on his neck. "You sure there's gonna be trees out here? Mostly looks like trash from the others to me."
"Yeah. I caught sight of them last time I was here. Before the ... incident. Just think of how the does would react if we brought back some sort of new seed to Homewood! Maybe something that grows into a beautiful flower?" Almost as soon as the words were out of his mouth, a tangle of strange trees appeared behind a ruin. Davvyd laughed happily. "Told you! Here we are! Last time I was here I had no way of getting to the seeds. This time, well, we're here together!"
Golyath chirped excitedly and zoomed towards the tree tangle. Davvyd galloped after him, not a care in the world. He'd spotted the seed bundle what seemed like an age ago now. He hoped it was still there, but if not, no real loss. It would probably just mean someone else had gotten to it. There seemed to be more traffic than ever in the Ruins these days.
Now well within the tangle of dead trees, Davvyd inspected them closer. They didn't look like anything that grew in Homewood. But they also didn't sound like the creepy trees described by the Noulicorns who'd accompanied Wanderlust either. These were just plain old dead trees. They were huddled together, branches all intertwined. Davvyd looked towards Golyath, who was hovering near some mid level branches. "Good think I have you with me, buddy! I'd never be able to snag those seeds on my own!"
Golyath chirped a laugh. "And I wouldn't have found them without you! I'd never look where all this trash from the others is. I thought everything out here was just junk." The little familiar carefully flew higher, searching for the seed bundle Davvyd had described.
On the ground Davvyd squinted, trying to spot the seeds that he remembered. What tree had they been in again? His eyes scanned up each trunk, and along the tangle of branches. He was beginning to wonder if the seeds were gone all together when he caught sight if them. "Golyath! There! Above you, and to your right!" He tried to direct his friend as best he could from the ground.
The green and white faery shot uprights, and slightly to the right. There, caught in the intertwined branches was a bundle of pendulous seeds. Golyath sniffed them. They certainly smelled old, but maybe not all the way dead? They didn't smell of decay, and that was a good sign. He reached towards them, tugging. The bundle seemed well and truly stuck. "I think they're stuck, buddy!"
Davvyd, on the ground, furrowed his brow. "You sure? We're so close, can't give up now! I'm sure you can get 'em close Golyath!"
The faery nodded, redoubling his efforts. He yanked at the seeds again, with all his might, but still they didn't budge. He grumbled under his breath. He then alighted on the branch, to get a better look at the situation. "Oh, buddy, you're right! I can get those out for us!" His keen eyes had caught sight of a little twisty vine that was pinning the packet into a nook in the branches. He might not be able to yank them out, but it looked like he could untangle them. He got to work.
Some moment later, the seed pack popped free, and plummeted towards the ground. "Watch out buddy!" Golyath called. Davvyd's head shot up, and he managed, just in the nick of time, to snatch the seed packet in his mouth. He laughed around them, and pranced a little. They'd done it! Mission accomplished! Now, to take their treasure back to Homewood and see what could be made of it ...
