xxx»» Duncan has always been very high energy. Everything about him moves quickly, from his body to his brain to his mouth. He tends to come off as spastic to other people, and can be difficult to follow. He has to make an active effort to slow down and be clear when speaking with clients. His energy can be off-putting, and more than one person has called him crazy. He's quite used to people being overwhelmed by him.

xxx»» Duncan has an excellent sense of humor. He's always quick with a joke, and loves to participate in a good ribbing, even if it's at his own expense. He's constantly cracking jokes about everything around him, though he's careful not to be insulting or rude. Of course, sometimes he's a little too clever, and his jokes fall flat. He's very used to explaining them, and doesn't mind in the slightest if no one else thinks they're funny.

xxx»» Duncan is used to being the first to speak, the first to step, the first to push forward and do what needs to be done. He's not one to hold back or wait around for either permission, or for someone else to break the ice. When he knows what needs to be done, he does it, not worrying about what anyone thinks. All he's concerned with is results, and getting something accomplished. He's quick to take charge of a situation and would rather be the example than wait around for someone else to do it.

xxx»» Duncan is not one to keep his thoughts to himself on the things that matter. He does a lot of reading and keeping up with current events so that he knows what's what, and never hesitates to make his feelings known. He's got all the energy in the world, after all, and has no problem being the voice of reason when needed. He gets into a lot of arguments with people, but generally lays his own out in such a way that, even if he can't change their mind, they at least don't have a solid argument against him.
INTUITIVE
xxx»» Duncan is very good at picking up on what's going on around him. History has taught him to trust his instincts, and so he's constantly listening to them and absorbing whatever information they provide. He's good at reading people, which is important in his line of work, although sometimes his manic nature makes it hard to translate that knowledge into action or words. He's very rarely surprised. When he is, he tends not to seem so, more fascinated by the goings on than taken off-guard by them.

xxx»» Duncan believes in being there for the people who matter to you. His family life, particularly in his teen years, was neither warm nor supportive. At the time he was mostly angry, but in hindsight it's sort of depressing. So, he constantly makes an active effort to be there for people. He's always checking in on the people he cares about, sometimes to the point of being overbearing. Still, he's definitely the guy you go to if you need anything. If he can't provide it, he'll figure something out.

CHILDHOOD
xxx»» Duncan was the firstborn son of a very wealthy and influential muggle industrialist. His father's family money had paved the way for him to start his own business at a young age, and his keen instincts had allowed him to flourish. Duncan's grandfather unfortunately never saw his son's success, as he died when the man was only 22. His mother was the daughter of the owner of the funeral home which handled the burial. During this period, the funeral home was struggling, and his father loaned the family some money to help keep it open. Duncan's mother was touched by the gesture, and the two became involved and quickly married. In his memory, Duncan can never say for certain if they actually loved one another; they must have, he figured, because it was hardly a match that made any business sense, but by the time he was born they were cold to one another at best, and cruel at worst. That didn't prevent them from having another child, his younger brother Alistair.
xxx»» In his youth, Duncan grew accustomed to strange things happening around him. There were jokes, sometimes, by his peers, mostly relating to his mother's family business. He was called all manner of things, accused of being possessed by a demon, and notably traumatized one young boy who had been bullying his little brother. They didn't get an explanation until he turned eleven, when a man came to his door and informed him that he was a wizard.
SCHOOL YEARS
xxx»» Duncan's time at school was mostly him coming to terms with a lot of things about himself, including his sexuality and the fact that his family didn't particularly approve of him. He was all but disowned by the time he was sixteen, ostensibly because his time at 'that weird magic school' prevented him from being able to study how to run his father's business. In reality, it was because he unnerved his parents, and they didn't care for the attitude he developed when exposed to people who weren't from families just like his own. He was officially disowned by his parents when he came out before his final year of school, and ended up spending the last half of Summer living with his maternal grandparents. He was devastated when, while away at school, he got the news that his grandmother had passed.
ADULTHOOD
xxx»» Not having much of a lifeplan, Duncan took it upon himself to help out at the funeral home until he could figure out what to do with himself. However, he found that he actually enjoyed the work, and magic made it much easier on his grandfather. They enjoyed a comfortable, happy life for four years, until his grandfather passed as well and left him the funeral home and cemetery attached.
xxx»» Duncan kept largely to himself, accustomed to people finding him off-putting. He had friends he kept in touch with, but mostly stayed at home, working and caring for his plants and pets. He kept tabs on his brother, who had unfortunately grown more and more like their parents with his absence in the home. He attended Alistair's wedding, and regularly sent gifts for the holidays, but overall had no real contact with his family. He tried, once his nephew and niece were born, but Alistair was hesitant to have them around him, saying he was worried that Duncan's "influence" would be detrimental to them.
xxx»» Duncan assumed, at first, that this was a reference to his sexuality, but conversations with his sister-in-law made him wonder if one or both of the children were magical, like he was. Eventually it was confirmed for him that Jude at least was, when the boy did something that couldn't be explained away. He tried to offer his assistance with the kids, but instead was barred from seeing them. He didn't have any contact with them until their parents were arrested years later. When he heard about it, he immediately threw his hat in the ring for custody of the kids. His mother fought him on it, but he was able to get the Ministry of Magic involved and gained custody due to being a wizard.

xxx»» Jude doesn't like sitting around waiting for things to happen. He's the sort of person who'd rather rush forward and try to force it than allow things to happen naturally. He gets antsy when he has to sit still for anything, and is very much a do-er. He's incredibly hands on and works best when there's something to keep him occupied during the down time.
SHORT-TEMPERED
xxx»» Jude can go from zero to one-hundred in a snap. His skin isn't particularly thick, and rather than get his feelings hurt, he's much more likely to get angry. He tends to feel slighted by any- and everything, and takes things way too personally. He also holds grudges and doesn't tend to forgive unless someone embarrasses themselves to prove they're sorry.
INTELLIGENT
xxx»» Jude likes to read, and he is a sponge for the information in his books. He's very good at picking up on how to do things just by observing them, and retains information very easily. He's gotten himself hurt a few times trying to replicate things he's seen in his films, but it's usually due to lack of physical ability rather than doing the thing wrong. When he can actually focus successfully, he's good at working through problems and puzzles, though this is a rare thing.
TACTILE
xxx»» Jude is very hands-on, in every respect. He doesn't actively notice it, but he tends to communicate better when he's making physical contact with a person, or at least something relating to what he's talking about. He has a thing with textures, and is very specific about what types of fabric he'll wear. He always needs something to do with his hands, and struggles to focus when he has to hold them still.
RECKLESS
xxx»» Jude is an act now, questions later kind of guy. He's not much of a strategist, preferring to make it up as he goes along. He does try to be mindful, but the second he hits a roadblock, his impatience acts up and he ends up running headfirst into a situation he's entirely unprepared for. It usually works out alright, but he's no stranger to needing someone to save his skin. Usually he can manage a thank you, but it's always begrudging and he rarely learns anything from the experience.
QUIET
xxx»» In between outbursts brought on by his anger, Jude is a very quiet person. He keeps to himself, preferring to find company in a book than with other people. He doesn't talk much, and generally only does so to voice displeasure with one thing or another. He generally tries to avoid talking if he can get away with it, and will answer with as few words as possible when he can't.

xxx»» Jude was the firstborn child, and only son, of the Cairn family. His father Alistair was initially pleased to have a son, but quickly grew to realize that Jude was not quite the heir he would have wanted. He was very quickly overshadowed by his younger sister. Skye was so like their father that the man pretty much immediately began to ignore Jude in her favor. Jude was left with feelings of intense inadequacy. His mother tried to help, in her own way, but she was not particularly suited to motherhood, and most of her advice boiled down to 'suck it up and do better,' which was less than helpful.
xxx»» Jude's predicament was not helped by the fact that it quickly became apparent he'd inherited whatever defective genes it was that gave his uncle Duncan magic. He hadn't been sure of why, exactly, his uncle and father didn't get along, until one night when he overheard his parents discussing Duncan's "abnormality." It didn't take long for him to realize that whatever was wrong with Duncan, it was also wrong with him. He strove to hide his magic. Unfortunately, it seemed tied directly to his temper, which he'd never been good at controlling. He was discovered when one particularly nasty outburst was accompanied by the fireplace violently igniting itself.
xxx»» He suspected, but could never seem to confirm, that his sister suffered the same affliction he did. He tried many times to catch her, but was not nearly sneaky enough to manage it. Before he could manage to prove it, all hell broke loose. Their parents were caught at and convicted for a series of crimes Jude couldn't even begin to understand or process. There was a brief but intense custody battle between their grandmother and uncle, which Duncan ultimately won. Jude was torn between angry that they would be forced to live with Duncan, and somewhat relieved that he would, at least, be living with someone who was like him. However, he refused to acknowledge his more positive emotions out of sheer stubbornness, feeling like it was a betrayal of his parents to do so.
