- THE GAME
- Genetics can be tricky! The only real way to get a handle on them is by forcing your brain to take the information and try to make sense of it. The good news is that once you get the hang of it, things like breeding projects and specific custom requests become a lot easier to pursue! This game is meant to encourage you to stare at our Genetics Guide and try to piece together as much as possible!
- RULES
- ◈ Submit your answers by PM to the mule
◈ You may submit your answers once. Everyone who got the answers correct will be placed into a raffle for the buck shown in this post
◈ Please do not share your answers or discuss them in-thread/Discord until after the results have been posted
◈ Our helpful Genetics Guide is the key to solving many of these problems
◈ If you have any questions, please ask in the #qna channel on Discord! You may ask general genetics-related questions, but may not ask about the specific questions in the quiz unless it's for language clarification
- PARSING GENES
- We use what's called a Punnett Square to determine the possible outcomes of one particular gene from two parents.
Take this example of the A-locus on noulicorns. The A gene determines whether a noul is black or bay. If the noul is AA (homozygous) or Aa (heterozygous), the noul is bay. The heterozygous Aa noul is carrying the recessive a gene, meaning it could pass it on to its offspring.
AA - Bay
Aa - Bay
aa - Black
If we have two noul parents and both are Aa, these are the following possibilities on the A locus:

We fill in Parent 1's gene on the horizontal axis, and Parent 2's gene on the vertical axis. Then we take the results in each box and see that the possible combinations from the two Aa nouls are as follows:
◈ AA (homozygous)
◈ Aa (heterozygous)
◈ Aa (heterozygous)
◈ aa (recessive)
The offspring, therefore, have a 75% chance of being Bay, and 25% chance of being black. Punnett Squares can help us determine the possible outcomes of every gene between two parents.
