Things had been mostly a repeated routine of going to work, and then coming home. There were trips to the grocery store sprinkled in there as well, but thus far, Kayden still hadn’t done anything…fun. Anything new.

She had looked at the flyer that had been taped to her apartment door with some curiosity, and had decided to give the dance lesson a chance.

By the time Kayden had arrived at the studio, she was beginning to regret the decision. What if she looked stupid? What if she didn’t have any grace or balance and just made an absolute fool out of herself? Her hair was braided up and coiled on the top of her head, so it wouldn’t be in the way while she was dancing, and the brunette hesitated at the entrance, rocking on her heels.

This was so far out of her wheelhouse that she couldn’t quite understand what had come over her. And truly couldn’t understand why she had come alone.

This would have been…exciting if she had someone here that she knew. She should have called Anella, or even Alexandre but…

No. Kayden had come so far, and this was just one more hurdle to conquer. Drawing in a breath, she entered the studio and quickly made her way to the seats by the window, waiting for it to be the time for the ballroom dancing lesson.

Rose was bored out of her mind. What better way to cure that than with a free dance class for a style of dance she'd never tried! It seemed really fun to the twenty-two year old would-be dancer. Getting dressed in her normal dance attire of baggy pants, a tight fitting cami and an oversize crop top hoodie with short sleeves, she felt a nervous excitement in her stomach. It was like when she started a job at a new patients house. She'd have to learn something different and new.

Grabbing her bag with a change of clothes, she was out the door and on her way.

Walking in, she immediately felt out of place with all the women who seemed so... elegant compared to her. They even had braids in their hair! Her lilac eyes landed upon Kayden's head of braids and she felt a sting of envy. Would her hair be in the way? It was technically not free, but tied up between her shoulder blades to keep it somewhat less hazardous to those around her.

"Crap," she muttered to herself, putting her bag down to sit in the seats by the window, over by Kayden. Immediately she started pulling all her hair over her shoulder. She could braid it really fast, right? "Stupid, stupid, stupid. Should have done this before I even left. Ugh."

Kayden looked over, tilting her head and feeling a sudden sense of relief that she wouldn’t be the only one at this class. If that had been the case…well, she might have left before making a fool out of herself…it was one thing to do it when there were others who had to meet the same fate but…

There was no way she was going to do it alone.

Hesitating she stood up and took a step towards the girl with the very long hair. “…You need some help? I’m not a bad hand at braiding hair, if I do say so myself…you…you’re here for the ballroom dancing? I hope you are…I’m not going to stay if I have to do this alone.”

Kayden felt somewhat awkward, trying far too hard to make small talk. “…I’m Kayden.

"Yes! Ballroom dancing, that's what I'm here for!" Rose wasn't looking up yet, grunting and almost whining as her fingers kept getting tangled in her own hair. God she hated how thick her hair was sometimes.

"You said you...wanted to help? Please? I can't believe I forgot to put it up in a braid to keep it out of my face. It's only like, so long right? So how do you forget?" Finally rose looked up and saw the other girl with a pleasant look on her face. She was younger like Rose! That was a huge weight off her shoulders. Rose loved dancing with older gentleman; they were sweet and had the best stories, and often lead like a dream. Sometimes it was just nice to be with someone your own age, though.

"I'm Rose! Here."

She literally shoved her hair into Kayden's arms and turned around with a sigh.

"I'm... not normally like this."

Kayden’s eyes widened but she took hold of the mound of hair, truly surprised by the fact that this stranger was actually letting her help. She was gentle as she combed through it with her fingers, braiding the thick strands with some skill.

“Your hair is truly lovely, I must say.”

And it felt nice to be playing in long hair. Nostalgic. Safe.

“There we go,” She said, tying the bottom of the long braid up when she had finished. “Beautiful. And far less likely to suffocate you…or me. Presuming that we’ll be the ones who are dance partners.”

Kayden moved back so that she could look at Rose, giving another shy smile. “It is very nice to meet you, Rose. Thank you for trusting me to get your hair fixed up…it’s been a while since I’ve done someone else’s. It was nice.”

She hesitated. “Do you dance often? I hope that I don’t end up making too big of a fool of myself.”

"Ah, thank you," Rose said, her cheeks a little pink from the compliment. She had her sisters compliment her hair, but they were family. "I don't cut it more than a trim every few years."

And then the braid was finished and the woman let out a breath of relief. "Thank you so much. It would have taken me forever." Rose whirled around to look at Kayden and flashed her a wide smile. "I haven't had someone do my hair since I moved into my own apartment. No one's there with me! So..." she laughed a little before glancing around the room to see if it had started yet.

"Uhm... I don't... ballroom dance, no. I do dance other things. All sorts of dancing. I like to just.. learn new types."

Gosh she sounded so boring.

“I’m alone in my place too. It’s nice for the solitude but...it comes with quite a few drawbacks.” Kayden gave a soft smile and nodded, looking pleased at the fact that the braid was appreciated. “I don’t dance at all, so I’m sure that you’ll...be much better off than I am. Honestly. I’ve been pretty much a shut in for a while...I’ve only started getting out again in the last few weeks…”

Though, she had been active. Before. Back home. Different kinds of active, but still.

“I’m eager to learn, but I’m going to apologize right now, I may step on your feet, and I will be more than happy to fetch ice for you if I end up crushing your toes too badly…” Though...it would give her an excuse to talk with Rose a little more...but.

Kayden was quite sure that would be the end of any flirting. If any of this was flirting. Ah. It had been too long since she had talked with a cute girl. That was for sure. “I will try not to, I promise.”

There definitely may have been flirting involved on Rose's part, but she thought she was awfully bad at it.

"Uhm... I only have been dancing in the last... four-five years? It's... pretty new. I was into the stars. I work at the museum in the space area. I give tours to young kids, give them information, answer their questions.." Rose laughed a little as she remembered some of the kids.

"So if you step on my toes, it's fine. It's part of learning. I'm sure I'll step on yours too. The dancing I do isn't uhm.... focused so much on...two people?"

The instructor walked in the room then with sharp heels on the floor proceeding before her. At least she was nice enough, giving them instructions and a short demonstration on how to hold one's partner and the first steps of the dance. There was no music yet, but she counted as she and her partner moved, showing where their feet should be on the beat.

Now it was time to double up and Rose looked at Kayden with a quick flash of white teeth. "Wanna be the boy or girl?"

Kayden nodded, listening with an interested expression. “Well, all right. So long as we get ice for each other, I can’t see that it’ll be really bad...which is easier? I don’t mind being the boy, That means I lead though, right? All the more chance to step on you.”

Oh, goodness. That was not supposed to have come out sounding like that, and Kayden felt herself flushing. “...I’m. I mean. Whatever is easier for you. I have no idea what I’m doing to begin with so, ah…” It was difficult to get Kayden flustered. With all she had been through, all that she had done...flustered...was interesting.

She supposed it was a good thing though. She really was feeling things again. That was nice. “I’ll be the boy. Your knight in shining armor, if that pleases you, Rose.”

The words made Rose blush and bite down on her bottom lip to stop a nervous giggle from bursting forth. That's the last thing she wanted, laughing at Kayden.

Instead she cleared her throat and nodded, letting one of her hands fall to Kayden's shoulder, grabbing hold of the other. "You can lead, shining knight." With that and a wink, the music started and the teacher was now teaching them the basic steps of the waltz.

Of course Rose would let Kayden lead. She was the boy after all. "You... can definitely be my boy. I MEAN.... A-a-a boy. The lead. Y-you're doing great."

Well that was great.

Kayden...felt rather delighted. The dancing wasn’t as terrible as she thought it would be, and the fact that she had managed to fluster this pretty girl with a little flirting made her smile, the expression a little foreign to her, but it felt good none the less.

“...You’re doing great too, Princess.” She chuckled and tried to go a little faster in their dancing, when her foot finally landed on one of Rose’s feet. “Oh, crap. And there I go. It took a lot longer to step on your toe than I figured on, so maybe I’m not as bad at this as I thought I was going to be.”

Dancing...was fun. She could imagine going to a ball, dressed in long, heavy clothes, whirling around and laughing...it was a pleasant thought. “Oh well. Guess that just means I have to get ice for you...what a shame.” Perhaps...she could even go as far as getting Rose’s phone number…

Even if things were just for friendship. Kayden needed more of that in her life.

Rose was laughing as they figured it out together, glancing up at Kayden with a happy twinkle in her eye, even when her foot did get stepped on. A hiss was let out, but she had wanted to keep going. So when Kayden suggested she was going to get ice, Rose sort of just held on.

"You can get me a sandwich after instead. You don't weigh much. My foot's fine." She wasn't going to be limping or anything. This would be fine.

Besides, this may be Rose asking for a reason to hang out. Maybe a flirt. It was hard to tell.

"If not a sandwich, this poor princess is going to pass out from hunger!"

Kayden grinned and shook her head. “If my princess needs a sandwich, then her valiant knight will provide it.” Rose was holding on to her...like she didn’t want to let her go, and for a moment, Kayden felt as though she was floating.

“You know, perhaps my princess should give her knight her phone number, so that there can be a future that involves more sandwiches...if...if that would interest you.” And if it didn’t...if this would be just a night of flirting and sandwiches after...so be it.

It was fun regardless, it was...a new experience that Kayden wouldn’t have been able to do before. And yet, here she was.

Really, the dancing was much more fun than she would have thought it would be. Not that she would admit it, but she almost felt like she was getting the hang of it. “You’re a good partner for this.”

This knight in shining armor routine was making Rose flush. When she signed up for this class, she expected to get paired with an older guy or lady, not someone close to her own age. But she very much preferred this.

"Oooh?" Rose hummed in time with the music, watching Kayden's face and then grinned. "I'm very much interested in that. So remind me again after class." Not that she would forget, but it did give Kayden an excuse to ask again.

As they waltzed and even added twirls, Rose couldn't help the easy laughter that came from her. "I'm only as good as my partner. So that means you're pretty good for this too. Uh... I was planning on going to this class a few more times. Are you just trying it out for today or something you'll want to be doing more...?"

“Oh no. If you’re going to be here...I think I’ll be back for the next class. If you’re not going to be here…” She wore a smile at the sound of Rose’s laughter and shrugged giving an exaggerated sigh. “I’ll just have to skip the class until you arrive...so you had better be here.”

Oh. This flirting...it was as easy to get back into it as it was to breathe...and it felt good. It felt especially good to be the one who was vaguely in charge of the flirting...like she could stand on her own two feet.

It had been this way with Farrah and...not with Jack...but that was all right.

When the class ended, Kayden gave a bow and looked up at Rose from under her lashes. “My lady. You are a beautiful and talented dancer, and I hope you will always know that.”

If she had the chance, she would tell her again. And again. If she didn’t believe it now well...there was always later.
