[ 753/750 ]
Daspien had grown a lot over the past five years. That being said, it was hard to really imagine so much time had past. Every day on the sea felt one in the same, all things considered, and as a result when someone pointed out the muscle he had developed, or the dark tan on his skin, he found himself more surprised than anything.
Maybe it was the fact he didn't see many of his old friends outside of his crew, or maybe it was because he didn't look at himself in the mirror, but when he finally got the chance to take shore leave and head on home, he found himself at a loss. The town he grew up in had grown, and more and more foreigners had moved in. Many of the people he grew up with had moved away, or went off to take on their first jobs, meaning he didn't have many people to spend time with. In fact, he mostly just saw his family and elder friends, and that was it.
So soon enough, with a few days left, Daspien spent his time at the local tavern. He sat back in the corner, where he normally did when traveling across the sea, and took in the sights. He watched as the Fire hybrids moved about, some of them water but many with different traits. Then he saw a Aishan lurking about, tall and dominating but keeping to themselves. It was crazy to think that the participants of the great war so many years ago could exist peacefully in the same place.
Sure, they weren't lovey dovey, but it was a bit off-putting considering he left and it was just a home-town off-the-map settlement.
Observing others allowed Daspien to think about everything that changed.
His travels to and from Yael allowed him to dance around his ancestry, to play the part of both Water and Yaeli. One foot in, and one foot out, it was a bit strange depending on where he settled. Those in Yael were hesitant to meet with him, off-put by his amber eyes and speckled skin. Sure, they interacted, but they had a cool personality and seemed keen to keep him at arms length. As he continued to learn more about Yael each time he did shore leave, he discovered the complex religion that made him feel like an unwelcome stranger no matter how often he would come into town.
The difference when he would visit Matori was quite astounding, and no matter how much he wanted to enjoy both sides of his life, he found himself drawn toward the world of the mainland. Matori was simply ahead of Yael in terms of welcoming hybrids, partially because of their complex history but also because the mainland was just ahead of the island.
Daspien had heard about Belrea as well, but still his crew had yet to join the many sailors establishing the second route to the other island. His captain instead was content to establish a strong and dependable route. Daspien didn't mind, but he also felt a bit torn with the same old path. He wanted to travel, to see the world from the sea. He knew from the maps that there was so much uncharted water, places he could go to visit others and new worlds he could explore. There had to be more than the three islands - in fact, the fact they discovered all the new islands meant that it was certain that more where out there. He just needed to find them.
It was only the start of his desire to explore more, to travel, but it was hard to be confident when he was still so junior as a sailor. So Daspien took the time to self reflect, to work harder, and to learn all he could from the strangers he met on his trip. The world was so interesting, and with it growing each year, Daspien knew that he would eventually be able to travel across every end and find a place for himself and his desire to travel.
As his shore leave ended and he got back on his boat, Daspien looked back at his home port with a promise. He promised himself that his home would be his sea, that he would live and breathe at every part of this ever growing world, and find a place where he truly belonged. Thankfully, he had the ability to let the waves take him where he needed to go.
