Life had been good lately. And when life was good, it was hard to stay responsible. Lupu was over the moon happy with Evan, he adored the family that he had now, and he adored the newfound relationship that he had with his brother. He and Loren had grown closer than they had ever been, closer than they had been as kids even.

He had called the older male out tonight to try to get them both back on track. Just because things were quiet now, just because things seemed perfect for them...well. They were both lower ranks than the person that they loved the most. They had to get stronger. If Loren wanted to protect Gale, and he wanted to protect Evan…they had to work to that. And work hard.

Today they’d do that. Today they’d get back on track…and take that next step towards being strong enough to protect those they loved.

“All right, Ammy. Are you ready for this, because I know I am.”

Lupu held his bow in his hand and grinned at his blue clad brother knight. It was a pity that he wasn’t a Saturn Knight too…that would have just been perfect.

“I’m going to win, I hope you know.” He sounded like the cocky, spoiled brat that he used to be, and his eyes flashed with challenge. “Let’s do this.”

Ammersee huffed indignantly at the nickname but made no attempt to correct him; it wasn’t a degrading or belittling nickname like he was used to his little brother presenting him with. In the past, he could expect some cute nickname, almost mocking, from his perfect, spoiled little brother.

Now, he could at least tolerate it with a bit of endearment.

“I don’t know what you hope to win. You spend all day on the computer and I don’t remember the last time you got some sunlight. But, by all means, Lulu.”

He took his position across from his brother, half-length trident in his hand and pointed at the ground.

“Do your best.”

Lulu.

For a moment, the Squire had to laugh, shaking his head. “Wow, at least mine really came from your name, you just pulled that one out of your a**!” Lupu laughed once again and stretched.

“I will do my best, and you’ll get all kinds of messed up from it, I promise you that.”

He began to channel his magic, concentrating with more effort than he should be using and he fired the ethereal arrow from the bow and watched, eagerly anticipating what was going to happen next.

The arrow landed a few feet in front of his brother, and he waited for the jab and the mocking, his smile growing as he watched as four hands shot up, binding his brother in a strong grip.
“My best is fantastic. Good luck, brother.”

Kyuseisha no Hikari
As a squire, Lupu has a magic pool that lasts for forty seconds. When he channels the magic, he holds his bow and fires an ethereal arrow. Wherever it lands within a fifteen foot radius, skeletal hands come up and bind the target in place. The magic channeling does not begin until the arrow has landed and the arrows can do no damage, they are just a catalyst for his magic. A total of four hands come out of the ground at this stage, capable of holding either one person in a very strong grip, two in strong grips or four in moderately breakable one handed grips.

Anyone targeted by the hands will see flashes of a horrifying illusion of being surrounded by death and decay that worsens the more they struggle. The more hands that grip the target, the more overwhelming the sensation is.

Ammersee scowled, ready to condemn his brother and fling a vast array of insults, but he was met with a surprisingly effective attack. Naturally, he struggled as soon as the bony hands gripped him--and let out a strange, choked noise.

He was not easily scared. He had never been easily scared. He had always had to be the big, brave, older brother. But this? He didn't know how to handle this. The flashes were terrifying and his heart was beating so erratically within a few seconds that he thought it might burst. In his mind, he knew it was a trick. He knew his brother was standing there smugly, relishing the fact that his magic worked. He couldn't even see him anymore--all he could see was corpses crawling on the ground, rotten flesh melting from the earth.

It was a trick, and even when he squeezed his eyes it was still there.

He couldn't think, couldn't process it. It didn't matter how many times he told himself it wasn't real, it didn't matter.

...But the idea that his brother might win sent a deep seeded burst of rage, a second wind. He couldn't see beyond the illusion but he knew his brother was there.

He had no spare thought to form an insult--instead, he summoned his magic.

Lupu couldn't mock him for falling for this trick if he couldn't see him. His trident had almost completely fallen from his grasp; he could barely move it but he managed to, just enough, to cast his own magic.

A little chime tinkled through the air; he didn't have to see Lupu, he just had to trust that he was close enough for the magic to take effect.

Quote:
Ammersee swings the trident and a tinkling, chime like sound echoes through the air. For as long as he is channeling his magic, all targets within a ten foot range will continue to hear the chiming and find themselves lost in a strange illusion. Everything around them will appear to darken and ripple, as they are trapped in a vortex of water and cut off from the outside world. The bells will continue chiming melodically, however with more intensity the longer he channels it. The music can cause a sense of alarm and concern; targets cannot see or hear clearly and it feels as though the water is crushing down on them. At player discretion it can give the impression of sinking or drowning, and they can choose to utilize actual water that lingers after the magic ends if desired. The magic will follow targets as they move and each individual target is trapped for the duration of magic. He can channel his magic for up to sixty seconds at this stage.

Lupu was wearing a satisfied smirk, and he was feeling utterly and completely smug. His magic was even better than he would have expected. He was planning his victory speech, planning on telling his brother that he owed him dinner or something after winning the spar, it would be worth it…and plus, it let him know that he was indeed stronger…and that was just an all-around good feeling.

“So, Ammey, you want to give up or—“

The Squire’s words were cut off as his brother decided to retaliate somehow, sending his own magic right to him and suddenly he couldn’t breathe. He was being crushed on all sides, there was water and it was dark, heavy. Breathing was hard and growing harder by the moment, and Lupu tried to stumble backwards, to get out of range of the magic, but it seemed like it followed him wherever he tried to go to and finally he fell to his knees, face screwed up in real panic.

This wasn’t…how things were supposed to be. He was supposed to win. To win but default but…but if this was the kind of magic that Ammersee had…well, there was no real need for the Saturn Squire to worry, now was there?

Ammersee held on for as long as he could--the only thing keeping him sane, keeping him going, was the need to keep channeling his magic. It was the only thing he could focus on, the only thing that was any slight distraction to the horrors he was facing.

He couldn't breathe at all, either because of the hands gripping him or because the sight was so horrifying that his body forgot how to function. When the skeletal claws finally dropped him and the world faded back to what it should be, his magic ended as well.

He fell to his hands and knees, fingers digging into the ground beneath him and panting. Each breath burned and his eyes stung; he wasn't crying, it just felt like some horrible image had been burned into his mind.

"You give up," he panted, not wanting to give his brother the satisfaction of seeing him shaking, of seeing the fear on his face. He kept his head bowed and his ponytail fell, obscuring him from his brother. He could barely see where he was an was only minimally aware that he was around, just not as close as he had been before.

Lupu was utterly relieved when the magic faded, and though for a moment he felt dizzy, unable to get air into his lungs fast enough, he didn’t want to lose face in front of his brother.

His…very strong brother.

“I guess. As long as you do. Christ, Ammersee. What kind of ******** up magic was that. Were you trying to drown me or something? I thought we were past the whole hating one another.”

He managed a grin though, wanting to make light of all of what happened. It wasn’t something he cared to experience again and he hoped that his fellow Squire felt the same…though….

“I think we’d make a kickass team if we had to go against someone else, you know? We…” He laughed, the sound almost a little shaky. “We’d really ******** them up, I bet. You okay…?” He moved over to his brother and held out a hand, trying to get past everything. “…Wanna get food?”

Briefly, a panic flooded through him, like he wasn't sure how to say something nice to his brother. He'd been competing with him for so long that it was still strange not to expect some snarky comment. <******** you' would have been his go-to response, except, Lupu wasn't being a brat so he had to bite his lip and shake the thought from his head.

"I don't hate you," he muttered, and though he was vaguely aware that his brother had gotten up, he hadn't yet moved. His head was still down and he didn't want to confess that his body was so rigid from terror that he sort of just wanted to lay down on the ground for a minute. No, not when Lupu was already up and holding out a hand.

He was the older brother. This was fine. He could do this. He kept his posture and stared at the ground for a few moments more as he tried to compose himself before blinding swinging his hand up and clasping it around Lupu's wrist. He heaved himself up without looking at his brother, and it wasn't until he had fully stood that he spoke again. He was half turned to his brother, perhaps trying to buy a few extra seconds to compose himself.

"Yeah. I'm freezing."

He paused, realizing that wasn't quite the right word. His blood had run cold and hadn't let up yet. "...Something warm might help," he tried to correct, but he was already flustered from the slip up. He reached behind him to take his brother's wrist again and began to tug him along. He wouldn't admit that it just felt good to have a solid connection to something alive.

"...I don't think we should practice on each other anymore," he finally blurted.

Lupu paused and his expression softened just a little. “Yeah, no, I agree with that. That was really…honestly terrifying. I’ve never been so afraid of dying in a fight before. But come on. We’ll get something warm to eat and…maybe watch some dumb cartoons with Evan and Gale. Make it a cute double date night and…calm ourselves down a bit.”

He walked with the male, and let his powered form fade away into the night, still taking deep breaths, still trying to shake away the feeling of drowning. Trying to push past the fact that he couldn’t breathe no matter what he tried.

“…Seriously though…at least now we know that…we can take care of ourselves. And one another, if it comes to that…I’m glad that you’re this strong. It’s…good. But…anyway. Let’s just…maybe pretend this didn’t happen because…I’m still a little freaked out, I won’t lie.” He gave a shaking laugh and finally just swallowed. “…I’m sorry for…freaking you out, if I did. If I didn’t…then I’m sorry for worrying!”

He knew that his own magic had done something to mess up his brother…and he didn’t want whatever wound that had been created to fester.

“…You’re super cool. Just so you know. And…I’m proud to have sparred with you, and fighting by your side is…gonna be awesome.” It was the only thing that he could think to say. It wouldn’t fix anything but.

It was something.

For a moment, Ammersee didn't say anything--and then he just laughed. It was slightly forced, but there was some genuine amusement in there. He shoved his brother's arm just slightly as he powered down. "You're so full of it."

They had spent too much of their life resenting each other, so genuine compliments still brought him a brief second of concern and distrust.

Things were different now. Things were better now.

They were friends--brothers.

It wasn't such a bad thing to act like it once in a while.

"I think...pretending like this didn't happen...is a good idea. Nobody needs to know about, um. You know. That." He cleared his throat. "...A cute double date night sounds good. Gale was just talking about this television show she used to watched as a kid. They just got it up online. I'll just say I saw it and was thinking about her and, um. Yeah. They don't need to know. I'm going to order something for us to pick up on the way home, and...Yeah, the rest of tonight, we'll take it easy."

He hesitated and then ruffled his brother's hair. "You did good. I mean, I'll always worry about you. But you did good. So I'll treat you to dinner and...we will definitely never do that again. To each other. But the next guy we fight is <******** class="quote">
