Settling into a new environment, one so different from the one you were born in, isn’t always easy. But life wasn’t meant to be easy, change wasn’t meant to be easy. Elysia wasn’t a noulicorn, yet here she was among them. Honestly, she was seen as an enemy but thanks to Wanderlust, nouls views of her were starting to change. Elysia was a dire rat but not one who would bring harm to a noulicorn, she was here to help, to learn and to grow. Her home, a colony in the barrens, was too stuck in their old ways and she wasn’t interested in that. It’s probably what made her an outcast among her own kind. She refused to partake in any attack on nouls or hunting of their young and she wouldn’t eat them either. We’re all stuck here in this beautiful but damaged world.
Noulicorns can get gifts of magic from the grandfather tree. Elysia wondered if it was possible for dire rats as well. It wouldn’t hurt to take a trip out to the tree and see if it would bless her as well. So Elysia packed her two bags with grain and water, but the glint from a blue crystal gave her a moment of pause before she packed it too. She didn’t understand it but she felt compelled to bring it along. Maybe she could study it on the way. Being smaller than nouls meant it took her longer to get to places. Must be nice to have such long legs and be swift runners. Elysia used the trees of Homewood to avoid noul foot traffic but had to return to the ground once she reached the edge of Homewood and the barrens.
The journey wasn’t so bad, especially after the long one with Wanderlust and Vitalta’s parties. Of course Elysia was use to living in the barrens and mostly traveled in the twilight periods and night time. It was cooler and easier for her to navigate than during the blistering heat of day. The sun was too bright for her little eyes. She made it to the base of the tree’s plateau without incident, now to climb. Climbing was no biggie for a dire rat, their feet and tail allowed for them to climb a variety of things. At the top, she took a drink of much needed water and washed her face and whiskers. Then approached the massive white tree and sat at it’s base. Elysia decided to pull out her blue crystal and study it while waiting to see if anything happened. She turned it over in her hand paws, looking at it’s different fascets.

The blue crystal begins to glow. With a crackle, it shatters and a burst of bright light engulfs Elysia.
Choose one of the following prompts for Elysia's dream vision.
Quote:
You find yourself in the ruins, standing over a deep well built into the Other’s sewage system. A cry for help echoes out of the darkness, but there’s no means to get down into the hole to help. What do you do?
Quote:
You meet an elder while travelling the Barrens. They appear near death and cannot stand. They ask you for water. You know it’s almost a day’s journey to the nearest water source and you can’t be certain the elder will live that long. What do you do?
Quote:
You have been travelling the barrens for days without sign of food or water. You are on your last legs when you finally spot something green in the distance. Is it a mirage? Or is it real? Do you risk going further to chase the green or do you take the safe route and return home?
Elysia looked startled as the crystal began to glow, a loud crackling sound was emitted from without just before it shattered and the bright light engulfed her. She let out a loud squeak and felt suddenly blinded but it was only for a moment. It vanished and the crystal too. She sat there blinking for a moment and as her sighed cleared, the vision of soaring Other structions filled her view. This must be the ruins she had heard about, the buildings were just massive and she could see that nature was running rampant over all of it.
Looking around, Elysia took in her immediate surroundings. She was sitting on something hard that was once a roadway lined by sidewalks. She was feeling very exposed and began to cautiously moved towards a building to her right. The ground before her suddenly opened up into a giant round hole in the ground with broken concrete walls. Carefully, she looked over the side and peered into the darkness. Goodness knows how deep the hole went but lucky for her there was a couple steel beams that went across the top. Keeping her body low and close to the beam, she carefully scurried across. “Hello? Is someone up there? Help me please!”
The voice froze Elysia in her tracks and she carefully peered over the side once again.
“Hello?” she called back.
“Help me please. I fell down here and I can’t get back up.”
Elysia blinked and looked up and towards the walls of the hole. They were completely smooth and must be all the way down if the owner of the voice couldn’t make it back up. She wondered if she was big enough to help this poor creature or hopefully the creature was small enough.
“I’m not very big,” Elysia said, “Are you small enough for me to help you?”
“Yes, I’m just like you.”
“Are you hurt? Do you think you could climb your way up if I found something for you to climb?”
“I think my foot is broken and my wrist is sprained.”
“Alright, I don’t have anything on me. I’ll go find something. Please make sure to not stress your injuries and take soothing breaths to keep calm. I’ll be right back.”
Elysia quickly scurried back the way she came and looked around at her options. There was a small group of trees nearby that had vines over taking them. Elysia ran over and began to test them to see what she could loosen. After some effort and pulling, Elysia managed to loosen what she hoped was a long enough vine. She then formed a loop at one end and tied it so it would make a sort of sling for the rat below. Returning to the hole, she found a metal stake protruding from the ground and wrapped her vine around it and tossed the rest over the edge.
“Ok, put the loop around you and please hold on. Tug twice when you are secured please.”
Some shuffling sound let her know that the rat below was doing as told. Holding the vine in her hand paws, Elysia waited for the double tug from below, there it was. She began to pull up the injured rat, it was slow going and hard work but she did it. Every time she pulled back, she’d secure the vine to the metal stake to keep it from falling back down. Soon she could see the rat below and she called down, “Just a bit farther. You’re doing good.”
Finally, a small hand paw grabbed the edge of the well and Elysia gave another pull, secured the vine and raced over to pull the rat up the rest of the way herself. The rat was smaller and younger than herself and covered in dirt and grime.
“Oh dear. Let’s see that foot of yours,” Elysia said soothingly, “Let’s see about getting that foot braced up.”
With some hand woven scarves and a couple pieces of birch bark, Elysia secured the broken foot for the young rat. With another scarf she wrapped the wrist and paw. She then pulled out some herbs from her pouch. “Here, for the pain. How did you find yourself down at the bottom of this hole?”
“I was running and didn’t pay attention to where I was going. I jumped and went down,” the young rat said quietly, taking the herbs and chewing them.
“Well you really need to pay attention to where you are going. No matter what. What if I wasn’t here?”
The small rat started to weep a bit, both from being scared and hurt but also from relief that Elysia had found them. Elysia scooted closer and hugged the young rat. “There there, everything is fine now. Is home close?” The young rat nodded and pointed towards their home, a hole into another building. “Well, hop on my back, I’ll carry you to your home then. Then your family can take over.” The young rat did as they where told and Elysia swiftly crossed the expanse between them and the building. She helped the young rat down and towards the hole. Another rat appeared, “There you are! I was so worried...what happened?!”
“This youngster fell down that big hole over there. I got them out and patched them up.”
“Thank you so much,” the new rat said. “Here, for your help,” the new rat handed Elysia something shiny before taking the younger rat and vanishing into the hole. Elysia turned over the item curiously but suddenly the grandfather tree had returned before her.
