Yawn.

Both mentally, and, indeed, physically, Magnolia was yawning. She was just bored.

Bored of this life, bored of this family, bored. To be fair, that didn’t say anything negative about her family - she adored them! - but golly they were just so dang bland. All happy and cheery and normal. And here they were, in this cute little pack where most everyone got along and prey was plentiful, and- was it too much to ask for a little chaos?

Magnolia, young as she was, had no idea what she was asking for. She didn’t know of the terrors brought on by natural disasters or plagues, and was simply unaware of just how privileged one must be in order to be bored in this life. Indeed, she had no idea what she was asking - and certainly didn’t know that would come in the form of one Huckleberry Horizon.

Padding around the dens, a few hours after most of Swiftfell awoke, she looked around, stifling another yawn. Gods, what was a wolf to do?

Without knowing it, Huck yawned at the same time she did. Taking care of pups was a snore - not that it wasn't eventful, but in the end, he generally didn't care for them after they had grown up. Some, he barely cared about even as a kid. And he knew the feeling was either neutral or mutual in return, so it was something of a hell for him: day in and day out stuck where everyone could keep an eye on him, rather than him keeping an eye on the pups. Don't try anything, Huck. What are you doing over there, Huck. What did you tell them, Huck. UGH.

Worse: he had the pleasure of watching over his half siblings, the byproduct of "true love" or whatever the ******** Thrush had going on with his latest mistress. Huck had held no special idolization for his mother, but it still stung that his father had so quickly pounced on another wolf, eager to get a litter that he liked. At least, that's what he assumed had been the case. Huckleberry was, well, Huckleberry, and even his sister Bird had started to poke at the authoritarian lines. Too bad Halcyon hadn't joined in, make it three for three. No, she had to be such a dutiful little soldier.

Looking as bored as he felt, Huck went to his assigned corner of the den and looked onward towards the entrance. Spying one such half-sibling, he called in a dull voice, "Oy. Where you goin' now?"

Mid-yawn, it appeared Magnolia was caught by one of her packmates. Well, to be more specific, her half-brother (that's what he was to her, right? She had so much family floating around it was truly hard to keep straight.).

Smacking her lips and tongue in a theatrically sleepy performance, she gave the impression of a shrug. "I wasn't planning on going anywhere, but if you have somewhere in mind..." She quirked a brow. Clever and far too jaded for her own age, she was absolutely ripe for the picking. If Huck needed a minion of any sort, for any reason, he could easily find a little devotee in his new baby sister.

Ambling over to Huckleberry Horizon, Magnolia plopped her black booty down in the dirt, tail wagging a bit, hoping he'd have an idea. Huck always seemed to have ideas, but he never seemed to want to include her. Oh, what she would give to be included for once!

"I'd love to explore more of the world. So if you have a place in mind, I'm happy to set off now!" Her tail thumped the ground. Although she knew she'd be tracked down in a heartbeat, a girl could dream!

Huck watched her close the distance with lidded eyes, still quite bored looking. But in true Huckish fashion, he began to concoct a plot, if a small one for his own amusement. What else was he supposed to do with his time?

He laid down on the ground and tucked his paws underneath him. "Better shut that idea down fast," he told her with a wry look, his voice hushed and just for her. "There's no such thing as exploring at your age, kid. You're stuck here with me, where eeeeeeveryone can see us. Didn't Dad tell you that?"

As Huck folded himself inward on the ground, Magnolia copied him - laying her tiny body out on the ground. She had a bit of an issue tucking her front paws in - were her arms too short?! - but overall, she was proud of what she's managed.

At his response, Magnolia almost outwardly groaned. But, she was smart, and the fact that he had lowered his voice meant something. It felt like they were sharing a secret, and it almost made her eyes glimmer.

"So you're saying when I'm grown, I'll have all the freedom in the world?" The sassy little pup rolled her eyes and her head all at once, in a very dramatic fashion, while matching Huck's hushed tone. "But you're still here. Why?" It was such an innocent, yet pointed, question, and only half of her hoped he wasn't offended by her brazen inquiry.

"Why indeed." Huck rolled onto his side, though his head lolled so much he was almost looking at her upside down. The pose of one defeated...but less dramatic and still more bored. He couldn't look like he was conspiring with a pup, no, he was simply playing.

"You're sassy," he told her and it didn't sound like a bad thing. "But nah. No extra freedoms when you're older, unless you decide to play nice. Be a scout. Go find someone to have more kids with. That sort of thing."

Magnolia was young, but she was not so naive. She caught the little bit of something in Huck's voice that indicated he was unhappy.

His next statement made that clear. And indeed, little Magnolia wrinkled her own nose in response. "One, being a scout sounds boring; two, kids? Noooo thank you," she said emphatically, swishing her tail in mock irritation. Or was it real irritation?

"If you want freedom so bad, why are you alone? It sounds like you have the answer to life all figured out." The pup certainly had a knack for (pointed) words.

“Life here, sure. Easy as catching rain with your tongue to figure out.” Lazily, he reached out a paw to bat at her. All games here, other caretakers, nothing to see. “I’m sure you’re smart enough to pick up what they’re putting down for ya.”

Huck felt a little insipid and more than a little gross bringing up children with, well, children. He blamed the upbringing he had, and the pervasive call for increasing numbers. Look at him, dad, spilling the propaganda out so casually. He wanted to vomit.

Instead, he kept his lazy fox’s smile. “Scouting sounds boring, huh? What d’you wanna do, then, kid?” he asked, smoothly circumventing her question, putting the attention on...Magnolia? That sounded right. “You gonna protect me when you’re older, like most’ve our sisters?”

Huck bat his paw at her and she faux scowled in response. Magnolia heard him, but her hearing was rather selective, and she decided to start tuning a bit of him out. Huckleberry seemed like a cool, mentor-type, but he was clearly not suited for the job.

Asking a pup what she wanted to do with her life was a tall order. Did she want to protect the pack? No, not particularly. "No, I don't think you need aaanyone to protect you." Magnolia paused, considering for a moment. "I want to be... an explorer. For the pack. I don't want to leave leave, but there's got to be more out there than this, right?" The small pup's tail thumped lazily as her brain started to get wrapped up fantasizing things. In reality, the role she wanted was something like that of an ambassador, but that didn't exactly exist for her to find the words. for it.

"Right you are," he said, hushed again, smiling less like a clever fox and more like a hungry coyote. For a moment, something more than laziness entered his tone: something much darker. "If anything, they need protection from me."

And then in the blink of an eye, it was gone. He turned back over onto his stomach.

"'Course there's more," Huck drawled. "Go be a scout, then, kid, I dunno. Least you can leave and come back. I heard someone went and visited another pack's party once. That sounded nice and totally out of character for the Point to allow. But I guess when you're the daughter of one of them, and you don't make them mad, well." He shrugged. "Favoritism. you could probably do the same if Daddy Dearest has any heart left in him."
