The world around the Kitwana'antara had stabilized but the Goddess of Souls yet stayed hidden within their borders. She did her best to examine what changes had become of her domain since Death broke the gates open, but until she faced the haven she might not know. Instead, she spent her time here, watching over the mortals here. Trying to keep their paths true to the way things had been before, guiding them to what she hoped was the peace they deserved after a harsh life in the cursed place.. just as they asked of her, just as she wanted.

It was dark and it was sad but it was something she knew, and she was happy to take that above the rest for now.

It had become a custom of Jani's to wander the Kitwana'antara's lands, nearer the border, most evenings. She was eldest in the family Mittere and Tarafa had created in love and in spirit, and it was often her voice that gave orders to the rest in family matters.

As it had in the ambush.

Kestven had been near furious with her in the aftermath. Others as well. Some had wanted desperately to have the blood of these not-so-strange-strangers upon their claws.

Yes, she was eldest. But she wasn't King - that was her nephew Maji. And she wasn't Master Warrior - that was her adopted brother Kestven. She was just...Jani. Tarafa's eldest.

"And who am I without that?" the green lioness murmured to herself.

Mtima had made the conscious decision not to hide herself when she crossed the paths of any of the creatures who lived here in the Kitwana'antara, but she did try to avoid them most of the time.. today, though, she was feeling lonely and the sight of a bright creature nearby drew her attention. She watched for a short time before making a quiet approach, trailing after Jani as she pondered the family hierarchy.

"Yes," she said thoughtfully, "Who are you?"

From behind, all Mtima could see of the lioness' physical form was a soft green color and a spotted stripe around her tail. Neither had been commonly found on any of the pride members she had seen when spying on the locals.

The lioness' head whipped around with a speed that her mother would have considered her due at the sound of an unfamiliar voice. What she saw...Jani's jaw dropped, blue eyes wide as she considered the large - and winged! - lioness before her. No, not lioness. Goddess. She'd heard that such a being was hanging around, but not many had seen her.

Belatedly, the Huntress realized she'd been asked a question. Making an effort to calm her racing heart and keeping her claws firmly sheathed, she spoke.

"I am Jani. And what would I call you?" she dared to ask the goddess before her.

Jani was older than the lioness she had first met when she arrived, Mtima observed, but not by much .. and there was just something so similar about them. Something familiar about this lioness. She barely had time to think about it before she got a good look at Jani's eyes, and smiled.

"The name you may know is Mtima'safi," she answered, enjoying the awe she had inspired, "I am the guardian of Souls, and I've been watching over this pride for a long time."

The goddess felt conflicted, being so formal and self-important, but it kept her at a distance and she preferred it that way for now. Her memories were recovered and she had many lessons from her past lives to keep in mind, she didn't need to fear the mortal world but she didn't need to cozy up to it the way she had before either.

The goddess of Souls. That fit with what Jani had heard. And Mtima'safi was...well, somewhat ordinary of a name. It didn't sound outlandish, it wasn't pretentiously long as compared to names beyond Jani's. Frankly, if not for the other's size, wings, and sense of presence, she could have been any lioness.

Not that Jani would have taken her for anyone else, but she supposed that was part of the point.

"It's an honor to meet you," the lioness said at last. She wasn't really certain what there was to say. Sure, Souls was important to the pride, but it was worship of Pestilence that most, including Jani, adhered to. But only a fool would fail to show a Goddess respect.

Mtima silently enjoyed the quiet assessment and reverence offered by the surprised lioness.. but just a stunned introduction wasn't of much interest. If she wanted that, she could sit in the midst of the pride and meet them all for introductions and fleeting conversation.

"Were you looking for something?" she asked, "You stand out, wandering out here.."

Jani was in possession of a very interesting soul, though Mtima often thought that when she got up close to mortals..and more than that, despite where they were, this lioness looked healthy. It felt safe to ask more questions about her.

There were long silences between responses. It felt appropriate, given the Goddess. But when Mtima'safi asked her next question, it stunned the green lioness far more than the fact of a goddess before her. She hadn't thought it would affect her so, but when Jani opened her mouth to say it was nothing, just distancing herself to think, the words would not come.

Closing her mouth, the lioness's brain raced until it latched onto an idea almost totally preposterous.

"Can you speak with the souls of the dead?" the question came out almost before Jani could think to stop it. "Because that's what I came out here for." Not to literally speak with the dead, but to speak with their memory, to figure things out on her own with their thoughts to guide her. But if she could truly speak with them...would she? Well, that depended on how the goddess answered.

Mtima was genuinely surprised by the abrupt question from the lioness, and a feeling of dreadful uncertainty filled her. Normally, before the gate was broken, she had a limited reach in summoning souls.. and once they went beyond the gate they were lost to her. Now that they could choose, could wander, could be reborn.. there was a good chance she had more power to manipulate them. The thought was horrifying to the goddess who had spent an eternity only guiding them to heaven but the hopeful lioness before her gave her pause.

"I can," she said, continuing gently, "But perhaps not in a way that is meaningful to you. What do you want to know?"

She may not be able to find who Jani wanted to talk to, if she could there was only an extremely small chance they would even know her still.. but she had the voices of many around her, if she wanted to listen. The butterflies resting in her hair began to flutter.

She...she could. She really could. That was the moment that Jani believed - that she understood deep beneath her fur that Mtima'safi was truly a goddess.

The green lioness had gone very still as the realization sank in. To think that this goddess could speak with her parents, both years dead of the disease...it was almost too much and Jani pressed her eyes closed against a sudden moisture.

It was something she'd never seriously considered before. If she could speak with Mittere and Tarafa...or even just one of them...one more time...what would she say? What if there were limits, or rules? What if...

She could almost hear mother's voice in her head, berating her. Mittere would never even consider this notion unless it gained her some tactical advantage...

Blue eyes opened wide as the idea struck quick as lightning. Not a trace of tears showed as Jani considered Mtima'safi before her.

"I want to know why that pink lion wanted to kill my mother."

Whatever Mtima had been expecting or hoping for, this wasn't that kind of question, but she didn't flinch. She instead considered it quietly, knowing that without more information there wasn't much she would be able to tell the poor lioness right now.

"That's a very complicated question for a spirit to answer, mortal grievances may leave a mark that persists into the next life but the circumstances and motivations that bring them about are tied to this one," she said, "Tell me more of what you know."

PostPosted: Sun Apr 26, 2020 7:09 pm
It wasn't an immediate answer, it was the sort that should make a person stop and think. And...if she was to ask any question of the dead, yes, this was what Jani most wanted to know. The question then became...how much did the goddess need to know?

"He said he was my mother's brother," the lioness answered. "And though we didn't know why, he came to kill her." Jani was silent, remembering.

"He died instead."

Now her voice was cold, hard, as sharp as her claws. Blood had been spilled and by more than one. Some would bear scars for the rest of their lives.

"What more do you need to know?" The question was sharp now, and Jani's blue eyes were cold. She was usually more gentle, like her mom. But Mittere's influence was strong when it needed to be. When she needed to be.

The change was fascinating, if a bit alarming. It made the goddess wonder as Jani explained the superficial details of what happened and boldly asked a pointed question, apparently now feeling entitled to an answer. If this had happened before Mtima regained her own memories of her past lives, she might have been put off by the attitude but she was sympathetic.

"When?" she asked, her expression losing its gentle kindness but not its thoughtfulness. Jealousy would be her first guess but that was what brought about the mutual destruction of her own brothers, it was not the only motivation for such crimes.

She wasn't even sure she could answer questions like this but now she wanted to know. Had the changes to her domain made more possible? Was this recent enough that she had any hope of finding these stray souls?

"He came as the rainy season shifted into the dry, three years ago," Jani answered. Her eyes were distant as she remembered. "He was late. Mother had died earlier that year, as the dry turned to rain." Better that she had died of the disease before they'd even had a clue about Facio.

Although...if she hadn't, maybe she would have told them about him.

But Mittere had never spoken about her life before the Kitwana'antara, so maybe not. Maybe not at all, even if she had lived.

Were Jani and her relatives at fault, for never asking about it? Mother had never brought the subject up, but they could have asked. Except, of course, that asking questions of Mittere rarely went well...which was why Jani could only ask this goddess in the end.

The goddess listened silently, nodded and then disappeared. If Jani truly wanted answers, she would have to wait to see what the goddess could figure out. The gods could do amazing things but they were not omnipotent, that's why there were so many of them.. perhaps she would find answers, it was more likely that she would not but either way, it would not be fast by mortal standards.

Three years. That was before the gate was broken, it made things more difficult that it wasn't yesterday but she already had ideas of where to start.
