Specterdust had returned home from her recent adventure to crash at her parent’s home. While most parents would be happy that their offspring was off into the world, contributing, and content with visits, her parents were not. Oh don’t get me wrong, they loved to have their tiny daughter home, it meant she was safe and in one piece still. But Specterdust had done her Grandfather Tree quest and had gone on an adventure or two by now and hadn’t yet done anything to contribute to the healing of Vykeli.
“What are you going to do with the gift the wonderful Grandfather Tree blessed you with?” Her mother asked her.
“I don’t know. I don’t really get it to be honest...It’s just sneezy dust. Really not all that useful.” Specterdust replied. “I can’t really help anyone as a superhero with it….”
Her mother just stood there with mouth agape. When was her daughter going to grow out of her need to save every living creature in trouble? After a moment her face changed to show she was mad. She had hoped her daughter would mature a bit after a trip to the Grandfather Tree and maybe show some initiative to develope her gift.
“Specterdust, it’s called pollinate and it’s used to help plants procreate!” She practically yelled at her ridiculous offspring.
“It does what?” Specterdust replied.
“It helps plants and trees reproduce, make more plants? Babies. It helps them have babies.” Her mother was clearly exasperated.
Specterdust’s face pinked and looked shocked. “I-I- I can’t help them do that! It’s so private moooooooom...no. So gross.”
Her mother’s face was deadpanning so bad at this point. “I have failed...I’ve failed to parent you properly. I’ve failed to teach you about all the gifts. Oh, what will your father think. Your sister has been working hard on developing her gift and helping Vykeli….” She paused and sniffled a bit. “The Grandfather Tree knows what it’s doing. You however need to figure it out and do as you were meant to do. Help the plants.”
“I don’t really like plants...unless it’s to eat them.” She replied to her mother nonchalantly.
Specterdust’s mother’s face was turning a bad shade of red and was about to reply when news arrived, the ascended vivify user by the name, Brightheart, was calling for guardians to a new species. Specterdust’s ears perked up and she bounced to her feet. This was an ascended noul that she looked up to and she was actively working on reviving a species and needed help. Oh this was perfect for Specterdust. It also meant that maybe she could have a sidekick finally too. Her mother recognized the look on her daughter’s face.
“Absolutely not! Just no. You need to sit and focus on mastering your ability. Not wandering off to go play nursemaid to a new species. Leave others capable of doing so to help Brightheart. In fact, maybe I’ll go and see if I can find a botanic who can tutor you. Yes, that’s what I’ll do. So you stay here and try to practice summoning pollen. You are to not leave this home til both myself and your father are back. I’m really disappointed in you, young miss.”
Specterdust groaned and rolled her eyes before flopping over onto the ground. Lovely, grounded as an adult in her parents home. But once her mother walked off in search of a botanic tutor and was gone for bit, Specterdust slipped out of the home and took off for where Brightheart was. She was practically skipping and running. She couldn’t decide she was so excited. Ever since she was little, er littler, Specterdust had wanted a sidekick to her shenanigans. Many nouls seemed to have jack hops or scuttle scales. She had considered these but had yet to encounter one who’d be interested. Today she had the chance to meet a totally new species and be able to take one home with her. Maybe if she raised the familiar herself, they’d be more inclined to join her on her adventures. They could help her save the day, one noul at a time. She laughed to herself and maybe help her with her one liners.
She finally reached the location as told to her and her mother via messenger. And there she was, wings outstretched, Brightheart! Specterdust wanted to fan girl all over the vivify noul. Specterdust quickly pranced in place and squealed delightedly before composing herself. She did her best to walk confidently up to the larger doe, the wings made her seem even bigger. Specterdust stuffed down her excitement, even bitting her lip.
“H-hi Brightheart. I’m Specterdust, here to answer you call! I’ll be a guardian to a new soul.” she puffed out her little chest and casted a glowing smile at the noul.
