A beautiful, gorgeous day. Ysalone felt the sun kiss her back, heard the sound of a gentle wind rustling the leaves of the Homewood. It made her happy - giddy, almost - to be alive. She sprang into a spirited trot, tossing her head happily as Sprite did a little binky next to her and scampered off. "Hey!" Ysalone called out with a laugh, feeling no real insult or injury from Sprite's sudden departure. "You weren't supposed to give yourself a head start!" The doe lengthened her stride, and then broke into a canter as she and the little Jackhop raced toward some undetermined destination, simply happy to be stretching their legs and living their lives. ysalone wc: 114

Not far from where Ysalone and Sprite had begun their game, another Noulicorn emerged from his slumber, feeling terribly and almost uncomfortably rested. A Wanderer since his days of youth, the buck had grown quite unused to the comfort of the Homewood. Every time he returned, he felt like something was amiss, as if being able to sleep without worry had become a foreign feeling. Roamer rose and stretched his legs. There was a stiffness in them that came not from tension or stress, but from... too much sleep. What a strange sensation indeed. He sighed and sucked in a deep lungful of air, waking up a mind that felt almost bogged down from rest. He'd only have to put up with this for a few days, just enough time to resupply and visit his family. They liked to know that he was still alive after all this time. After that, he'd be on the road again. The buck had just lowered his head to sip some water when his ears swiveled and heard the sound of laughter ringing out from behind him. So early in the morning? And so loud? Roamer couldn't quite believe the audacity of nouls who had never ventured outside of the Homewood. Did they not have any idea how dangerous it could be-- Before he could finish the thought, a Jackhop followed closely by a young doe rounded the corner and came pelting straight at him. The little creature made no attempts to avoid him, darting right under his legs and leaping into the water with a giggle. roamer wc: 264

"Oh! Oh, excuse me!!" Ysalone yelped, swerving and only narrowly missing a head-on collision with the buck. Sprite had burst out of the trees so close to him that Ysalone had barely had time to adjust course. She flailed to the side and tripped, tumbling facefirst into the pond beside the little Jackhop.
"Ooof..." She managed to say, shaking her head. If she hadn't been awake before this, she certainly was now! The young doe gathered her legs beneath her and heaved herself to her feet, tossing droplets every which way as she shook the water out of her coat.
"Oh! Oh, I'm so sorry, noulja, I didn't meant to get you all wet on this fine morning!" She managed to beam at him, somewhat sheepish, hoping he wasn't too irritated with her. "Well! Nothing like a fine shower early on, is there?" Ysalone laughed, stepping her way carefully out of the water and shooing Sprite out as well.

Roamer didn't even know how to react. He'd sidestepped right as Ysalone swerved, and found himself watching as she'd pitched headfirst into the water. His eyes were wide, and no words came to his open mouth. In all his years... he'd never seen anything like it.
Of course, it had been years since Roamer had lived full-time in the Homewood, so it wouldn't be out of the question to think that perhaps the youth were simply raised a little differently these days. Were they more spoiled, perhaps? Or was this doe just young and inexperienced? The buck felt inclined to believe it might be both.
He heaved a sigh as she picked herself up and exited the water. "Honestly, a shower was not high on my list of priorities this morning..." he said, sounding a little grumpier than he'd intended to. Was he becoming a bit of a curmudgeon after so many years of traveling on his own? Roamer sincerely hoped not. But he'd become quite unused to dealing with the incompetence of others, and his patience for it had grown understandably thin.
The buck shook his head. "Don't worry yourself. Worse things could have happened."

"Oh..." Ysalone said curiously, eyeing the buck out of the corner of her eyes. A small frown furrowed her brow as she tried to understand what he'd meant, running through all the possibilities... Ah. Comprehension dawned on her.
"Oh, you mean it could have been raining already when you got even more wet!" The doe said brightly, pulling herself proudly up to her full height. Wet on wet was certainly unpleasant. She swished her tail happily. "You're right, noulja, it could have been much worse."
Beside her, Sprite had busied herself drying off, throwing herself to the grass and rolling around haphazardly until all of her fur had been rubbed free of moisture. Ysalone fond herself watching the Jackhop with more than a little drop of envy.

"Uh. No..." Roamer managed to say, doing his best to keep the incredulous look off his face even as his brain churned to provide an appropriate response. How could she be so naive?! The buck wanted to shake her. There was so much out there beyond... the technicalities of how wet one could get before it became miserable.
"Worse as in... you could be attacked by a horde of dire rats. Or trapped in the Barrens with no food or water for days on end. Or..." He sighed, frustrated. "Any number of things! Getting wet is the least of my concerns."

That seemed to sober Ysalone up real fast. She drew back and blinked, falling silent in a rare display of poise. Her eyes flitted across the buck's form as she studied him, and she seemed to be thinking hard about what he had said and what it might mean.
"You've seen some things, then, noulja," Ysalone said finally, voice uncharacteristically soft. She didn't quite meet his eye, as if she couldn't bear to think of all the terrible things he might have witnessed in his life. Things that she had never come close to seeing in hers. "Are you a wanderer?"
She watched him nod, and mirrored his motion with her own thoughtful one. "I've spent my whole life in the Homewood," she told him. "I thought I may as well become a Gardener or maybe a Nanny." A smile. "I like foals."
She seemed to realize that was a bit of a tangent, so she shook her head and brought herself back on track. "I'd never really thought about going ot there. What is it like?"

Roamer's stern gaze softened as he watched her put two and two together. The buck nodded. "I am," he confirmed, gaze shifting to stare out at the horizon they couldn't currently see. So trapped, here in the Homewood, and yet so safe. "It's... well, I love it out there. Seeing the world and healing it, it's like healing myself. Or keeping myself sane, however you want to see it."
He thought of his travels and everywhere he'd been. Everywhere he wanted to go. "It's not for everyone. For me, it was the only option. I couldn't stay here in the Homewood all my life. I had to leave. I just felt it. And well, my name's Roamer, so it just made sense."

"... Felt it? Calling to you, you mean? Like you couldn't ignore it?" Ysalone asked, looking up at Roamer. She saw him nod and a small smile came upon his face, as if he was pleased that she'd finally gotten it.
The doe fell silent again for the second time - truly astonishing for her - and when she spoke again, a determined little look had settled across her brow.
"Roamer, do you think it'd be a good idea for everyone to travel? Just a little bit, even?" She asked, eyeing him carefully to gauge his reaction.

"Oh, yes, of course," Roamer answered promptly. There was no other answer. Even if it wasn't permanent, he could find no arguments against every noul spending some time outside of the Homewood, exploring the world, finding themselves, learning what lay beyond the idyllic bubble of their home. She wouldn't have to ask him twice to get the same answer.

The doe brightened up, all but dancing on her feet. "Well that settles it, Roamer!" she exclaimed, much to the buck's surprise. The confusion on his face was palpable. Ysalone shook her head, leaning closer. "You want a travel companion, don't you? And you just said that it'd be a good idea for me to travel. I'll come with you, then! Two heads are better than one. Surely. You can teach me what you know, and I... well, Sprite and I will be great company. You'll see!"

Roamer found himself almost choking on thin air. "What?" He said, sounding strangled. "No, that's not what I said."
But it was too late. The doe had made up her mind. She pranced in place in front of him, looking and sounding awfully pleased with herself, refusing to listen to his spluttered excuses.
Roamer found himself rendered speechless yet again. His words had fallen on deaf ears anyway. He'd just have to try to find a way to convince her not to come
