Kyuseisha no Hikari

Alright, he could do this.

He could do this.

Easy, easy, easy.

Basyl paced the length of his bedroom, watching the mirror hung against his closet door as if he expected someone might pop out of it at any instant. And to be fair, something like that wasn't entirely out of the realm of possibility. If he pondered it for even a second, Basyl would wonder if anyone he'd ever invited over had seen the neglected mirror in his bedroom, if they knew when he wouldn't be home (practically never: hospital rotations plus a needed job at the coffee shop for funds didn't lend itself to much time to lounge at home), if they'd utilized his bedroom as a pit stop, and he'd been none the wiser...

Fingernails scratched lightly at his neck, and fidgety fingers skittered up from there to bunch in the rat's nest of his hair. He didn't want to ponder it for even a second, if he was being honest. Basyl didn't have many people over, anyway, so it wasn't like there was a huge chance of anyone being around without his knowledge.

But now he knew it was possible, and the only price for that had been... He twisted the odd pen that had accompanied his recent ordeal through the fingers of the hand not currently tugging at his hair.

It was so weird.

It was so. Weird.

Inexplicable, even!

But exciting in its strangeness. Basyl led a busy life, hardly dull, as the medical profession could still be rife with surprises, but busy in that his mental capacity didn't usually leave much room for his thoughts to wander to the strange and absurd, even when it was presented in a patient right before him. They did sometimes have very odd stories for how they ended up in the hospital...

Basyl flicked fingers through his hair, giving his head a shake as his focus went back to the mirror. There were dangers to powering up in his own home. He didn't want anyone to figure out where he lived and- And come after him, or something. But the convenience of bedroom-to-town was hard to pass up on, and he expected the practice for mirrorwalking was something he'd at least have to try. So no time like the present. With any luck, he'd only be in his room for a few seconds. Basyl gave the pen a flip, and in hardly more than a second, Narcissus blinked back at him through the mirror.

Okay, okay, okay. He could do this. If he just took a bit of a running start, it wouldn't be any different than a Platform Nine and Three-Quarters situation.

He knew what he wanted and could picture it in his mind. The place Basyl worked was a small coffee shop. It didn't even have the standard male/female segregated bathrooms, so much as one room with one toilet and one sink and one full-length mirror hung on the back of the door. It was late now, surely closed such that no one would even be left inside tidying up. No one would notice him if he came and went. The only security was the lock on the door, which as a diligent and trustworthy employee of a small business, he had a key to, for days when he was to open alone.

He knew what he wanted. He could do this.

But knowing didn't stop Narcissus from cringing as he shoved his weight toward his own mirror and was met with exactly what he'd expected to happen: a sharp sting and resounding clatter as his body collided with a solid object.

Stupid, of course, of course. If he expected it to not work, it probably wouldn't.

Narcissus puffed out an agitated breath, shook his head, flicked his fingers. He could do this. He could do this if he wanted it badly enough and believed strongly enough. And if he didn't flinch, probably. He'd watched Kibirev do it, and she'd made it look effortless... No thinking, just doing. Just. Doing.

He lurched forward a second time, and there was a brief panic as his stomach leaped into his throat at the lack of resistance, of a cool sensation that swept through the length of him, and then startling gravity. Narcissus was in the coffee shop bathroom. His gaze darted around, wary for sounds that someone may be in the shop still, but all was quiet. He peeked out the bathroom door to see an empty room, chairs stacked neatly atop the tables and a dark and quiet counter.

Good, good. Even though Narcissus had expected to find it this way, he still hurried through the room and toward the door as though someone might appear from nowhere. He clicked the lock open and let himself out, stepping onto the sidewalk outside the shop's doors before turning and relocking it with his key.

One hurtle cleared.

Arnica was familiar enough with Dark Mirror energy signatures that his head perked up when a new one flared up on his radar. He'd been in the back alleyway across the street, draining the energy from an already sleeping transient. He could smell the alcohol on him and didn't feel bad about draining from someone who had already given up on the night.

His wraith darted back into his shard and he pocked it before he inched out of the shadows and peered around the corner, looking for the source of the signature.

Mostly, he spent his time patrolling with his sister. Tonight, he'd been out collecting research for an article he'd been commissioned to right and, after a useless night, needed to work off the frustration.

He expected a Dark Mirror Senshi on the roof, or coming from a mirror tucked away in some alley.

He was not expecting one to exit a coffee shop and lock it behind him.

Arnica hesitated, looked both ways across the road, and then cleared his throat from behind the Senshi. "Hey," he said, gesturing for the man to join him. In a hushed voice he asked, "--You don't work there, do you?"

Being outside the shop with no one any the wiser lent itself to a sensation of relief, and Narcissus released a breath he hadn't known he'd been holding as the lock to the door clicked into place.

That feeling of relief didn't keep his thoughts from racing, though. Narcissus hadn't come out here with a plan for what he expected to do or accomplish, and he thought he'd be relatively pleased with himself if he just managed the transport- which he had! So any more than that was just a small bonus. It didn't seem wise to go looking for anyone. Had it really been in his best interest to come out here alone? Maybe he should have tried to contact Kibirev or even Itokawa. Either of them could have served as a guide or source of protection better than Narcissus could manage on his own, and he certainly didn't want any trouble-

A startled yip of sound escaped him as he jumped in surprise at the presence of someone behind him, and Narcissus spun sharply on his heel to see the other man.

Immediately he felt ashamed of feeling relieved at all. His fingers started to twist adamantly through the billowing sheer fabric attached to his collar. The other man was clearly involved in this, ah, mirror court deal, if judging by his outfit, and if he was involved, then Narcissus should've felt him nearby. But he'd hardly taken notice of anything out of the ordinary at all besides what his eyes had told him, initially.

If he paused to reassess the situation now, he thought he might feel a tingle of something...

Narcissus tugged the fabric and his gaze fluttered distractedly anywhere except to the other man. "Uh-hhhhmmmm." The sound drew out for as long as he could manage it in one breath, and he shifted his weight constantly between one foot and the other as he considered the question.

He couldn't really tell anyone anything about himself, right? Wasn't that the situation? He didn't know this stranger, and it seemed like a bad course of action to tell him where he worked, since only a handful of people would have a job there, and it would probably be too easy to figure out his civilian identity just from that one piece of information...

But at the same time, he hadn't been attacked when his back was turned, and they were on the same side. Maybe it wouldn't do any harm? And he'd obviously been caught, which was as much an answer as any he could give. He moved closer at the other's beckoning. "I, uh- I do, yeah..." Narcissus decided eventually, disentangling his digits from the fabric and clasping them behind his back to keep from any further obvious fidgeting. "Is that bad...?"
PostPosted: Thu Mar 19, 2020 8:12 am

Arnica stared for a moment, watching intently with one arched brow as the man seemed to search for an answer. He shook his head with the confirmation that he did work there and gestured again for him to walk with him--away from the building.

"Maybe don't mirrorwalk into the building and then lock up? If I'd been an enemy, I'd have jumped to the same conclusion. You don't want to give anyone the opportunity to track you, to figure out who you are. You're new, right?"

He had to be; he hadn't met him before--not that he was in any way an expert--but the man's rank was generally indicative that he might not have been highly experienced. Which wasn't saying much; Arnica had been a Dark Mirror Senshi for a while and hadn't yet upgraded. He had other things to worry about, though--like supporting himself and his sister and staying alive.

He was trying to make up for that, though. Out now, gathering energy, trying to figure out how to get stronger.

"...I'm Arnica." He jutted out his hand, offering a shake. "Dark Mirror Senshi of Mandragora. So, nice to meet you. --But, there are other mirrors you can use, if you need to get around in a pinch. There's one like, half a block away if you need to pop into town around here but don't want to use somewhere you frequent."

"I thought about that," Narcissus admitted as he rocked back on the balls of his feet, gaze darting between the tops of the building and the other senshi, back and forth. "But it was difficult to argue against the convenience of instantaneous travel to a familiar location. I don't want to spend too much of my night wandering, and I don't have a whole lot of travel time allotment, if I'm being honest... It seemed unlikely that within the entire city, someone else involved in this- ah, thing- would be around here."

His attention dropped to the ground, and he rambled quietly, "But you're here, aren't you? So maybe it's not so unlikely at all. I suppose I assumed that there wouldn't be too many people like us just in general, let alone wandering around the same places at the same times. It seemed more dangerous to go somewhere bigger that more people were familiar with or that might have security cameras around. I suppose I could not lock up behind me- then I could just be any customer who knows where a mirror is, but I don't want anyone breaking in."

He huffed out a sigh, lips pursing and brows knitting as his nose crinkled. It really was a dilemma.

A hand entered his field of vision, and he blinked at it. "Oh, I'm Narcissus," he replied, reaching to shake the offered hand. "It's not really what I'd pick for myself, but I guess that's how it is with these things. Arnica is much softer sounding. The herb is used in topical pain medicine, did you know?"

Smiling softly now, he took up a stride at Arnica's side, following as beckoned. "I would appreciate if you could show me towards any mirrors you know of."

"I googled it," he confessed of his name after shaking and dropping Narcissus' hand. "I'd never heard of it before, and then all of a sudden I was supposed to be this person. 'Dark Mirror Senshi of Mandragora'. Had to google that, too. Before all of this, I was investigating this 'supernatural' side of Destiny City. I loved all those rumors, I wanted to get to the bottom of it. I've got little sisters," he explained, "So I worry about them. And with everything going on in town?"

He whistled as he exhaled. "I never expected that this would be the answer to all that mystery."

Arnica continued walking, guiding him to the nearest mirror. He stayed alert, mindful of any energy signatures or rustling in the distance--just in case.

"Are you interested in medicine?" he asked after a second. "To know about 'arnica' right off the bat like that, I mean."

Kyuseisha no Hikari

Narcissus' smile faltered a bit at the other man's assertion that he was supposed to 'be this person' that he'd never heard of. It would be the same for most people who awoke to this, he supposed: a weird name and weird magic shoved on them without much a choice. His own name and sphere were at least familiar, if unpleasant, terms... But the past of it- whatever or whoever the 'Narcissus' who came before him was- didn't seem an important aspect to the Narcissus of now. "I, uh..." He shook his head, rubbing awkwardly at his arm as a means of doing something when he didn't know what to say.

"I don't think I'll have much luck being 'Narcissus of Rejection' if I model myself after the preconceived notions of what 'Narcissus' or 'Rejection' means in contemporary terms... It isn't exactly a super uplifting story..." He swallowed, glanced down, then back up. "What I mean is I hope it's not our job to go around 'being' something unfamiliar just because it's what we were told was in our past..."

But Arnica probably understood more of the situation as a whole than Narcissus did, so he decided not to press any farther than that.

He laughed in a jittery bubble, tugging lightly at his hair. "I'm a third year med student, so to be honest, I don't have time to have much of a self outside of that," Narcissus admitted sheepishly. "We don't spend a whole lot of time studying traditional medicine, as it tends to be, ah, well, more based on superstition than science, but I have done a scattering of projects focused on identifying any actual benefits of herbal remedies. My knowledge of arnica is comparatively limited," he chattered ceaselessly, but obviously pleased to be engaged on a topic he did know and understand.
PostPosted: Wed Apr 15, 2020 7:17 am

At this, Arnica managed a genuinely impressed smile. "Third year med student! That's an accomplishment. Takes a lot of dedication and hard work. Good for you, I'm proud of you. I'll have to come find you the next time I get hurt," he laughed--but if he had things his way he wouldn't be getting hurt.

"I don't have anything that impressive on my resume. I've been doing a lot of journalism, photography. Private investigating." Though, he really needed to actually get licensed. Maybe get a gun.

He clicked his tongue on the roof of his mouth and figured that those thoughts were best left entertained when he didn't have company. "Gotta say, though--med student isn't what I expected for 'Narcissus of Rejection', though. That sounds a little harsh. Tough luck, my friend. But...don't let that get to you. So far as I can tell, I don't know what those names or titles are supposed to mean--outside of some sort of styled magic. Didn't change who I was, just what I could do. What I was expected to do. You know, the whole Dark Mirror spiel. Gather energy, do...I don't know, things. How are you settling into the Court?" he asked, glancing over. "You settling in all right?"

Kyuseisha no Hikari

A burst of awkward laughter bubbled out of his throat, and Narcissus smothered it down with his fingers over his lips. "W-well, I don't know about all that," he replied, finicky gaze darting across the street and then briefly back to Arnica before flicking away again. "Being a student is almost nothing. It's the, uh, part that comes after, that really seems to stop a lot of people..." He rubbed at the back of his neck, twisting at a tangled length of hair as he considered his next words. They'd only just met, and Narcissus wasn't sure who really constituted as an 'ally' in this mess of a war, but still...

"I'm sure you're probably joking, I hope, and that's fine, if you are! But I do have some practical knowledge of first aid, and it doesn't seem completely unlikely that you won't get hurt doing all this, so if you do find yourself injured, or if you know someone else who takes a hit, I could give you my phone number or my address?" He offered uncertainly and managed to look Arnica in the eye for a moment as he did. "Just so you'd be able to find me if you needed help, and I wasn't, mm... In costume, so to speak..."

It probably wouldn't get to that point with any of them, though. Trying to fathom that his magic- or any from the other groups- could do any lasting damage to someone still seemed bizarre. He just didn't want to take the idea too lightly. Kibirev had said people had died.

It was his civic duty to keep that to a minimum, if he had the power to do so.

"Journalism and photography sound much more exciting in a place like this," Narcissus replied. "It's not really any wonder you wound up as a senshi, if you were out actively looking for anything weird happening in the city. I guess you found it?" He flashed his teeth in an odd smile. "I bet you stick out even as a civilian, though, so there's probably not much 'going undercover' for you?" With bright hair and eyes like those, Narcissus doubted anyone would forget him.

His fingers instinctively reached to tuck into his hoodie pocket, coiling close to him at the continued pondering over who he was 'supposed' to be and what he was 'supposed' to do, only to remember that he wasn't actually wearing a hoodie this time. His arms folded over his chest, instead.

"What exactly are we expected to do?" He asked more mutedly. "And why? Why is any of this happening? Kibirev did her best to explain it to me when she threw me through the mirror, but even she seemed not-completely-certain what our actual purpose is, in all this..." 'Uncertain' summed up a lot of how he was feeling, to be honest. He tried to accept that it was just magic! and he should do whatever the magical nonsense told him to do, but it was difficult to wrap his head around. "Do you like being a senshi?"
PostPosted: Thu Apr 30, 2020 12:04 pm

Arnica couldn't help but smile at the laughter, at the way Narcissus covered his lips. He held his tongue, waiting for the other to finish speaking before he responded, but his eyes lit up when he recognized the name Kibirev. "Oh, you've met Kibi? She's my little sister," he said, with obvious fondness and excitement.

"She wasn't the one who put me through a mirror, though I haven't had much contact with that one either," he admitted, and though he had left in a hurry and without much chance to exchange details he still held some bitterness in his heart. "To be honest, I was mad, at first. I didn't sign up for this, didn't ask for it. But...if anyone had explained to me what I was getting myself into back then, I would have just called them crazy for it. I'm not upset anymore. It's brought me closer to her. And it's given me the opportunity to do things I never would have been able to. I'm still new, and I haven't met that many from the Court? But...I don't know. It's nice to know they're out there, I guess. I thought this whole thing was a conspiracy. You know, gangs, or propaganda. But...hard to look in a mirror, at yourself, and say 'This is a lie'."

He donned a contemplative expression and then just shrugged. "...It's a little danger, a little excitement, and the keys to the universe, if you ask me. I'm a guy who likes to solve mysteries, and it feels like the universe just handed me a big one. Where does this magic come from, where do we come from. I want to know more about Mirrorspace. I can't get there myself, but. I'm working on it. And having a secret identity? That's the best sort of 'undercover' you can get. But," he gave him a not-so-serious look. "You'd be surprised at the disguises I can put together. But magic-ing it up? Awesome and easy. And--joking or not--yeah, absolutely. I know bare minimum first aid, but I guarantee you know more than me. Let me get your number, I'll text. And maybe we can meet up sometime, I'll buy you lunch to make up for Kibi tossing you around. It'd be nice to have some sort of steady line of communication, some tie to the real world. Sometimes when I power up, I still feel like this has to be some dream."

Kyuseisha no Hikari

Narcissus' eyes widened, his brows shooting up on his forehead. "Y-your sister? So you're both...?" He canted his head and pointed a finger at Arnica and then to nothing at his side. The pair of them were senshi? Related in their civilian lives and then they were both awakened into the Court? Kibirev was the younger sister, as Arnica had said, but... Her aura was so much stronger. "How did you find out about each other? I mean, it's supposed to be a secret, isn't it?"

He swallowed and pulled his hand back to fidget with his hair. "Though I think I do see a resemblance, now that you mention it..." They both had ridiculously vibrant hair and eyes.

"I certainly wasn't mad," Narcissus admitted as Arnica explained how he felt about it when he'd awoken. "Um, confused, mostly, I think. There was- still is- a lot to take in, and the answers weren't especially straightforward. It doesn't seem like something that can be explained so easily, and I wasn't... exactly... receptive while it was going on." He glanced at the other man, scratched a hand through the back of his hair, and looked away. "I suppose I'm not sure where I fit in, or where Narcissus fits into me..."

It was just a lot, as he'd said to Kibirev.

But he gave a short laugh at the rest of the explanation. "I'm not sure about 'keys to the universe,'" Narcissus admitted with a snicker. "Even like this, as senshi, we're still so small. I asked your sister why we were like this, who made us, what our goal was, but maybe it's just easier to accept that we're no more significant now than we were as just normal humans. Maybe we can do more, maybe we're more able to help those around us, but should we really try to be greater than that? Wouldn't that be enough? I've always just wanted to give the most that I could... It's my civic duty to provide whatever I can to whoever I can, even if it's not much in the scheme of the universe. And I feel like... this is just an additional level. A little bit extra that I couldn't have planned for..."

Narcissus laughed awkwardly and shook his head. He pulled out his phone and tapped the screen a few times to bring up the number input screen. "Here. You can put yours in, and I'll text you to send you mine." His eyes flickered to his screen, then hesitantly back to Arnica, wary. "Um... my civilian name... It's Basyl, so uh, I guess use that, if I'm going to be a contact in your phone."
PostPosted: Thu May 07, 2020 12:23 pm

“Basyl?” Arnica repeated, almost absentmindedly, as he accepted the phone and began to type in his contact information. “That’s cute.” He looked up and flashed a quick smile. “I’m Leander. My sister was awakened a good while before I was. My father and I had a fundamental disagreement in my younger years so I left as soon as possible. She’s my baby sister, so of course I checked in on her when I could, but they didn’t much like it. Bad influence that I am, and all,” he said in a tone that indicated he thoroughly disagreed.

“Honestly, before all of this? I was working so hard to uncover what was going on. I didn’t believe the media, I knew they were lying. I just...didn’t expect this, you know? And certainly didn’t expect to be a part of it. So there goes my Pulitzer. Ah,” he sighed and handed the phone back when he’d plugged in his name and number. “Oh well. Maybe there’s still something out there for me. But--Kibi and I, honestly...the night it happened for me, I went over to her room to talk to her. I needed someone to believe me--or to tell me I was crazy. And she was way too calm. Powered up in front of me. So I’m glad we were on the same side, I don’t know what would have happened if we weren’t,” he confessed.

“But it brought us closer together. She was getting kicked out, I was living out of my car, so...honestly, the Court kind of brought us closer together. We’ve got a nice place and everything’s much easier now. I can’t say I’ve met many other Court members but...you’re a good start. And if we could work together to help people? I’m in. All of this feels like it’s over my pay grade. I need to find somebody who actually knows what’s going on, who can tell me if there’s supposed to be a purpose to this or if it’s all some big cosmic joke. But...I mean. Save a lot of gas with Mirrorwalking, so that’s a perk, I guess?”

"Ha!" An abrupt snort of a sound escaped him, and Narcissus' teeth flashed in amusement as his eyes lit. "I'm not sure about 'cute,' so much as just a testament to my mother's love of, um. Food." A strange, sweet woman. Narcissus hoped his remark didn't sound like a complaint against her. He tried a hesitant smile still as he scratched his hand against the thin stubble around one of his cheeks, gaze flickering only briefly to the other senshi before darting away at the less pleasant tone of the conversation. "Leander is a more proper name, at least," he replied. "And you don't seem like a bad influence to me."

Not that they knew very much about each other, or about the ah- What had Kelly called it? The 'chaotic aura?' Narcissus couldn't say how that and this war had affected the other man, either... Maybe he'd just been different before? Or maybe not and he simply didn't have a positive relationship with his parents.

Narcissus accepted his phone back as it was handed to him, and he gave a the screen a quick skim before putting it away. Almost all of his contacts were work, school, or immediate family, so it was strange to be putting someone... His lips pursed in thought. Well, the Dark Mirror Court was just another facet of work, or family if he went by how Kelly felt about it, so he probably shouldn't take too much consideration into having a 'friend's' phone number. He shrugged the thought away.

"It really was hard to expect," he agreed with a quiet laugh. "But I'm glad it was able to help you and your sister bond and maybe get out of some less than savory situations. Maybe it's easier to sort out all these weird, uncertainties when someone is in it with you." He still wasn't sure what he was supposed to be doing to help people like this.

At least he knew what his talents could be used for as a civilian, but this...

"If you find anyone with that kind of information, you know, anyone who knows why we're here and what we're doing, I hope you'll send me their way, or at least keep me updated on anything you learn. But, uh..." He fidgeted with the billowy ends of the fabric attached to his hood. "While we're on mirrorwalking, you're still going to show me that mirror, right?" He asked with a quick grin. That was why they'd walked off together, after all.
PostPosted: Mon May 25, 2020 8:06 am

"I'm not just leading you down some dark alleyway!" Arnica snorted, seeming amused. "I hadn't forgotten. It's just another one over. We could have gotten to it quicker if we'd cut across this road and the next but I didn't really want to worry about someone seeing us. Come on," he instructed, and kept his silence for a few seconds before turning down one alley.

There was nothing particularly exciting or interesting about it; it simply looked like empty boxes had been stacked at the back doors of two different buildings. He walked down without any real concern; there was no trash to sully the alley, no filth or rodents to be concerned with.

Next to a graffiti covered wall and hidden in the shadows of the wooden boxes, a mirror. It was a good five feet tall and nearly two and a half feet wide; he had to duck a bit to come in and out of it but it wasn't uncomfortable or difficult.

"Sometimes the mirrors get moved, or someone breaks them and we have to place a new one, but. I can think of twenty that I've used for the past few months without any issue. And it's not like there's any claim on the mirror--we all just share them. So, if you're looking to get out around here, try this instead. And if I find anyone with any better information, or a better mirror around here, I'll let you know. It's a bit of a guessing game, I know, but. For what it's worth, it seems like you're off to a good start."

Narcissus gave an awkward laugh at Arnica's assertion about 'not leading him down a dark alleyway.' He rubbed at the back of his neck, gaze wandering over their surroundings as he gave a terse shrug. "Well, it's, uh- hard to tell who's doing exactly what, anymore," he admitted lamely. It seemed unlikely that someone from his own court would be up to anything unsavory, but how was he supposed to know? Being on sides of a war lent itself to... unexpected things happening.

And there was sure enough of that going around.

Following anyone into dark corridors in the middle of night hadn't ever been a good idea, but now that Narcissus knew there could be actual monsters waiting in the dark and actual people who commanded them, the threat was all the more real.

And even if he was supposed to be a 'useful' senshi instead of a civilian, it didn't seem like he had many more capabilities than someone who wasn't like him. He still wasn't sure what his magic could do, and it hadn't been especially easy to get through his own mirror in the peace and quiet of his home. He scratched the back of his head and sighed. "I suppose I just hope it gets easier with time and knowledge... I hope it starts making a little more sense."

Narcissus followed Arnica, anyway, though and was rewarded with a full-length mirror tucked behind a stack of wooden boxes.

He blinked in confusion. "These really stay out here for more than a handful of days without getting broken or stolen? When they come to collect trash, they don't take this, as well? It's so odd to think that there could be a bunch of mirrors just set up outside for senshi to use. I thought the one in my work would be a good option, since it's unlikely to ever be moved, and it's safe from anyone else, for the most part." Narcissus fiddled with a long hair strand again. "And I'm not very good at mirrorwalking, so having something reliable seems... in my best interest, at the moment." It would be hard to tell if he just wasn't properly executing the walk, or if he just didn't have a mirror waiting where he thought he did.
