It had been nearly a day and a half since Wolframite had fallen back asleep after she had accidentally pulled his starseed from his chest. Each attempt at waking him up to drink some water or take medicine was becoming more and more difficult. His breathing, thankfully, seemed somewhat stable; a bit congested but once she was able to tuck enough pillows behind him so he sat up at an incline the coughing started to happen less frequently as before.

Still, the fever worried her greatly and made her wonder if he had ever been vaccinated for these sorts of things. As half youma, they were hardier than normal agents it seemed. Maybe it was because half of who they were was not human and did not contract such illnesses easily. However, he was a Captain and as such wasn’t he supposed to heal more quickly. Could it be that recovery from sicknesses was different than injuries?

Exhaustion weighed heavily on Laven’s shoulders and yet she remained vigilant in caring for him the best she could. Keeping a cool compress against his head while making sure the blankets were tucked in around him in an attempt to burn out the fever and stop the chills that had caused him to shiver before.

Unfortunately, it just wasn’t enough. He needed a doctor but as he was, she couldn’t call 911 otherwise they would take him to a scientists lab to be studied rather than a hospital to be treated. Even if she could find a doctor there was no guarantee they would know how to treat him either.

It was unfamiliar territory to be in.

What he needed was the infirmary back at the Dark Kingdom but she was just a simple lieutenant, unable to teleporting them anywhere. Yes, she could contact Lopezite or Tinaksite, assuming they were powered and could be reached, but Laven had no idea what directions to give them to find where they were at.

“Wolfy… please wake up.” It was a quiet plea that she knew would only land on deaf ears yet she said it anyway.

One hand was slid behind his head to help him sit up so she could, in turn, take the place of the pile of pillows behind him. It didn’t matter if she got sick for being so close, if it was going to happen then it would have happened already with how completely exhausted she felt. It was a last-ditch desperate attempt to force his fever down since her own body temperature was cooler than normal humans, but if the damp washcloth wasn’t enough then maybe holding him might help, she reasoned.

Of Wolfy had been awake, he could comment on his current state and the unfamiliarity of it all. Having only officer memories meant he had no recollection of being sick, even with the sniffles, or what all went with being tended to or feeling out of your element. As a half-youma, his mutated body was just as unsure.

The hacking cough had subsided to the occassional one here or there, more a clearing of the airways of a silent call from his body for water. Otherwise, he laid there, turning slightly and brows creasing once in a while to some subconscious stimuli or physical body ache.

His mind was on fire. The starseed pull and argument had ignited like kindling in his mind and as his body rose in temperature, everything became fire.

Resting in the side of the wolf, the youma laid there, patient and loyal over his charge. The woods were Amber reds and orange with fall leaves. Behind them was a large tree with roots that ran over the field the two were resting. The roots snaked up and down from the earn around them and out, and the sound of crackling wood from a fireplace could be heard from it. Veins of red burned inside the woods and there, standing at the base, was Faustite watching. But unlike the half-youma General, he was made of black iron. A golem of a man with the oven burning in his chest and eyes.

On the opposite side in front of them was the cathedral of Gevaudan. The gothic black building stood like a charred theorn in the darkened sky. I side a hollowed knight of armor and black inside stood, swords skewered into it's back, standing in a pile of ash.

To the right stood the home Laven would know. The one he showed her in his dreams of the future. It was glowing inside, melting as if made from gold, the colors swirling in blobs like molten lava. A glacial leviathan stood in the melting colors, it's body deformed and melting over and over again, locked in a state of never-ending destruction.

To the left stood a house unfamiliar to her. It was black, already long since burned, but stood perfect despite how burnt and gray it was. A quick wind could turn the Ashen house to dust in a moment. A black husky stood by it's door.

The wolf laid, licking the brow of the sleeping man, one eye a golden full moon and the other a black Eclipse now.

Everything burned in the end.

Minutes turned into an hour yet nothing seemed to change. Laven held him in her arms, his head against her chest while she combed her fingers through his damp hair. In her heart she knew that something wasn’t right that this went beyond a normal sickness, he was slipping and she was helpless to keep him from drifting away.

Not knowing what else to do, Laven removed his cuff and affixed it on her own ear. Like a burning candlewick their minds linked. The wolf and man remained where they once were, on the glistening shore where the Endless Sea met the Dark Forest. However, this world of their own making had shifted to a place better suited for one of the nine levels of hell.

The true Leviathan walked beside its ward as Marissa approached the Wolf, it’s conscious mind being the only one she could reach. “You remain vigil over your charge.” She spoke softly then extended a hand out to touch it’s brow gently.

Her heart ached with sadness at how the beast had changed.

A lackluster version of its former self. Once regal and terrifying it had stood tall with lips pulled back in a hungry feral grin. He was a predator that craved blood and destruction as a parched man craved water while wandering the desert alone. But now, while its domain burned around them it tended to Winter, loyal as can be.

For a beast that commanded respect and assumed dominance by never backing down from a challenge. It seemed that there was room in it’s blackened heart for compassion, at least for one.

The Guardian of the Dark Woods knew her, it knew her scent, the taste of her blood, her sweat, her tears. Marissa was by no means it’s equal and yet she approached unafraid, running her fingers through its long coarse hair. “You two are one in the same, he needs you as you need him. Rest now, let me watch over him.”

Her own protector seemed to resign itself to the task given and circled the small group. Its body, covered in cool scales, curled around the fevered wolf and rested its head across the purple paw with deadly sharp claws. There was no sense of remorse radiating from the sea serpent and yet the gesture rang with a familiarity of the time they first met, where they acknowledged each other's presence and the responsibility of their chosen charges.

It hesitated as she came to it, and it watched her with half eyes before rising up. It's body had been dusted in Ash and above, it was snowing light gray. It did not move far, moving closer to the golem general and the burning tree where it felt more akin in direction and laid down behind them there. The other youma moved about it and for a moment it showed it's teeth, mistaking it's coiling as a serpent's stranglehold before it saw it settle and in turn did the same; It set its own head atop it, watching but tired. The body of the boy and it were locked and it felt the fatigue.

Winter laid in the blackened grass, and the sound of kindling could be heard all around them.

He didn't move and inside the cathedral, it's bell started to ring. Thungggg. Thungggg. Thungggggg. But instead of chiming enough times to tell the time, it went quieter and quieter until it simply slipped into silence.

Marissa watched as the Warden of the Woods leaned against and rested its head against the Serpent of the Deep Sea Trenches. It was a physical weight against her consciousness, an awareness that it was not far.

In its absence, she approached the raven-haired man and knelt beside him. With care, Marissa carefully helped him sit more upright as he had been and held Winter close. Around them memories and dreams burned like hot coals, black and charred on the outside while glowing brightly on the inside.

Much like the time they were at the fair together, she began to hum a melody that had no words just a string of notes that formed a song that somehow resonated within her; a silent calling for him to find his way back to her. He had drifted so far away, to a place she could not reach without the use of the earring that linked their minds.

As the second moon began to wane, eclipsed behind a veil of true and absolute darkness as its twin brother, the tides began to shift and the endless sea began to rise around them. Each wave lapped at the stretch of sand, pulverized stones that had begun to turn to the sharp glass where the fires burned the hottest.

The flames hissed angrily turning the salty water into plumes of white steam that mingled with the black smoke that loomed overhead. Still, as Marissa continued her Sirens Call, the relentless seas came rushing in and over tree roots and with a hushed sigh they became submerged. The cathedral and home he had envisioned for them were not unlike lighthouses that had fallen from the cliff they had once resided upon. Where the earth beneath them beaten until it could no longer support the weight of each structure leaving the foundation they were built upon vulnerable to the rising tide that sought to snuff out the inner flames.

Waves lapped at her bare feet but as the dreamscape began to submerge like Atlantis the water receded around them and their other halves as if a glass dome had been placed above them to shelter them from the storm.

The waters rushed in with the tide, and the embers crackled and steamed as water sent great plumes of white and gray up to the sky. Buildings sank down like broken ships leaving a landscape of sea as lazy clouds formed overhead across the sky. In the waters, ripples went, and long tentacles of a great petrified kraken went up out of the waters, bring up small islands of lush-growing ground all about then.

Despite the creature, things seemed calm, even safe.

The giant tree now dropped human-sized red and orange leaves atop the water, floating like giant curved boats. There was a smell of fall and a faint smell of Laven's shampoo.

The water rose up and with it, came the sense they were in a fish bowl as the world rose up above them, rippling moonlight down on them. Here, his eyes opened, and they were black orbs as he looked about.

Marissa tenderly cupped his cheek with a gentle hand then carefully turned his head to face her. His gaze reflected that of the Wolves where the once handsome green hues were now hidden behind a veil of shadows and she worried that this time she may be too late.

“Wolframite?” She spoke his name quietly while stroking his cheek with her thumb.

That hallowed look in his eyes made it hard to tell if he was truly looking at her rather than through her to a point beyond the glass walls or perhaps even into her soul, where the guilt from her earlier deed had stained her starseed red with sin.

“Come back…”Marissa’s lips pursed into a thin line as she tried to hold back her tears in this dreamscape. However it did nothing to stime them from falling where she sat on the room in the bed holding him closely.

“First you hid the truth from me, robbing me of the life I had. Then you pulled me from the lake, denying me the escape I desired. Now you run away like a coward, stealing the future you showed me, the future I want too…” Yes he had kept secrets from her and she knew that if the situation was reversed she would have done a similar thing but in the end he did share the bead of knowledge even if it was too late to do anything with it. But more importantly, Wolframite kept his oath to her; she ran and he did not leave her to wander the woods alone. He brought her back to a familiar place. But now…

“You gave almost everything to Queen Laurelite.” The hand that had cupped his cheek moved to rest flat against his chest. “Almost, but not everything. She has your loyalty, your soul. But this… you’re heart… it’s mine. I’m claiming it. That future you showed me, it will be ours but you can’t keep running away.” He left the Negaverse, then he left his husband, but she would be damned if he would leave her too.

Lavendulan didn’t lie when she told him that she would not survive if left in the darkness alone again. Corrupt as it was, he was her light and without it... without him she felt helpless .

"Why?"

The words came from him as he looked at her, his expression as hollow as his eyes.

"When you speak, it's feel like I can hear the aching yearning for better things. Things I won't be able to give you no matter how hard I try. I want you to be happy but - I don't want to make you miserable from staying here."

"What of the things you want? You miss? You lost? I want you....but I don't want you to sacrifice your happiness."

He was conflicted and the hair on the wolf's back raised in response to his doubts.

Marissa steeled herself against the sharp ache in her chest. It felt like a barbed arrow was being twisted, shredding her heart from that emotionless expression and monotone words.

Never before had Wolframite been this difficult to read. He had walls built up which were thick and burned when touched. It made her worry that he may already be too far gone. A shadow of his former self that did not want to be brought back from the hell he had built up around himself.

“It was never a sacrifice being with you.” She admitted openly and honestly. “Being with you made me happy.”

The lights around them dimmed to blackness but she could still feel the heat from the fires that burned beyond the velvety black curtain. A spotlight shown upon them and from the circle around them, a beam shot out then stopped when it hit a familiar tree. Maple leaves swaying as the two of them sat beneath the tree eating street tacos, laughing and enjoying each other's company until she stupidly made things awkward by putting his hand upon her chest.

That memory froze when the sweeping blush turned both their faces a light shade of pink.

A second light shot out at another angle and where it stopped a loud ringing bell was heard. They stood together in front of the carnival game; Winter handing her the mallet to take a swing and ending with her most epic failed miss.

Around them, lights continued to appear, snippets of precious memories she held onto and guarded fiercely for they were moments that truly made her happy. But then they slowed as the moments became more recent events.

“You were my first in many facets of my life. My first kiss. My first boyfriend. My first…” She paused when the memory of her wearing the purple negligee surfaced.

“I’m still angry at you for not telling me sooner, but I understand why you hid it. You could have easily waited until someone else told me and played ignorant.” However, she knew that the lie would unravel itself eventually. “But you broke your vow to the Queen and told me anyway.”

“You say that you can’t give me better things, but Winter… Can’t you see?” She gestured towards the scenes around them. “You already have!”

“I don’t understand why you doubt yourself so much, that you think you’re incapable of making me happy. I loved you… I still love you.” Despite the hurt and anger, those feelings don’t just disappear that easily. She knew him more intimately than she knew anyone else because they shared this unique mind space. The world that existed in this space that linked them together yet separated their human and youma natures so perfectly. Here in this wonderful world that was subject to their own imaginations.

Marissa put one hand on his chest, above his heart, and the other above her own.

The leviathan shifted. Lifting its head, the scaled beast nudged the wolf’s muzzle with its snout and like a weighted blanket, her tail draped over the feral youma’s side. Its charge was safe, he only but need to be patient and watch but that was easier said than done because The Guardian of the woods was not known to be a patient creature.

When Marissa withdrew her hands, each of their starseeds hovered above their respective palm. Hers, an icy blue with swirls of black ribbons with his a deep purple with similar markings and a bright green core.
PostPosted: Wed Apr 01, 2020 3:19 pm

"I didn't break my vow. It was going to happen. One way or another. I just - maybe I just wanted to save my own a** in some way by telling you before it got worse. Or maybe I - I don't now. Finally let the guilt get to me when I knew I was taking your firsts and felt maybe I didn't deserve them from someone as good as you. Someone who wanted a better life and could maybe find it. Maybe even find someone better." He admitted, sitting up and staring out at the fragments of memories that Laven had put under a spotlight.

To her, these moments were everything. To him, they had been wonderful.

"I keep wondering if you aren't going to get angry again by something I've done and wonder again and again if I was being truthful to you. You looked at all the time and already wondered if any of it was real, right?"

The wolf rose, untangling itself from the Leviathan and biting it in a warning to not attempt to restrain it. Not enough to scar, but enough to warn.

Moving, it's shadow went over the other as the wolf barked at Wolframite and he rose a hand up to touch it's muzzle. The starseeds hovered, and the Wolf glared at it with glimmering eyes.

"What are you going to do with those." He asked.

The Leviathan recoiled from the bite but heeded the wolf’s warning and stayed in place for it had a plan of its own depending on how this all played out. It did not save the young woman only to be dusted out of existence by purification.

“There is no doubt in my mind that those moments were real.” Marissa quickly clarified before he had time to dwell on those concerns.

At the time he had no reason to try and impress her back when they first met. If that were the case he wouldn’t have bit her so hard in their first spar that he’d leave a permanent scar. “What I wonder is what other secrets you might be keeping from me. I’m not a fan of prying but even your fears caught me off guard when they manifested.” Once at the carnival and again in the Shadow Lands. Fire she could understand being afraid of it, but mirrors confused her until she later learned the reason

“I won’t lie to you and say there will never be moments of doubt, but a good portion of that derives from my own insecurities. Just as you think that I could find someone better, I wonder the same about you. I worry that if your husband were to find and forgive you, that you might choose to be with him again especially if he came back to the Negaverse as you did.” If that were to happen, Laven wasn’t entirely sure what she would do. A side of her would want to hold onto him greedily while the other would want to see him happy even if it was a future she was not a part of.

“I worry that eventually, you’ll realize that I’m not strong enough to stand beside you.” She just didn’t have the passion for fighting as he did. Despite trying and learning from him it still took more than a gentle push to get her out there. “That you’ll want someone more capable than I am.”

Marissa swallowed the growing lump in her throat and allowed her gaze to fall upon the starseeds she held. “As for what I do with these, it’s ultimately up to you.”

“Three months, that was the timeframe we gave ourselves to decide whether or not this relationship could work.” In the distance, a loud bell could be heard ringing. “It feels like we’ve taken a step back but I am willing to keep trying.”

“However, this isn’t about what I want, you have a say as well. If you would rather end it and go our separate ways then I will give this back to you. Whether you survive or not will be determined by your own willpower to live; it will be a clean break but you will not find me again.”

“But if you want to keep trying, to work through this and be with me. Then we walk this path together. It’s an impossible feat to do outside this Dreamscape but I would merge these starseeds together and bind our futures. I would go to Queen Laurelite and extend your vow to her onto me so that if there ever comes a time where you are asked to go on a mission you won’t have to keep it a secret from me and we could go together.”

"I don't know what to tell you. I don't want to tax you with my bullshit all the time. I don't want you to keep feeling like you need to take on more and more of all the ******** up s**t I went through that had tangled all my wires." He looked up at the bottom of the Wolf's muzzle that was towering over him, and he splayed out his fingers to run them through the fur.

"I couldn't tell you about the Dark Moon Court without telling you about purification. I didn't want to even come close to touching the subject around you. Even back then, I knew I could have told you about it and didn't want to do it. It was nice going out and doing things with someone who had a connection and memories to the human world still. It was intoxicating in a way. To make believe like that by riding your coattails."

The wolf moved, hind legs over on either side and head dipping low. Hot breath rolled down upon him, and he stared at the starseeds held out there.

"You'd leave if I took that back. And stay if I let you keep possession of it?" He said, looking at her offering hand.

"Is that your proposal? Till death or purification do us part?"

Suddenly regretting how she worded that, Marissa fell silent. Her gaze drifted down to an arbitrary spot on the ground between them. “I suppose you could take it that way…” she said quietly, ashamed of her own weakness and fear that led her to propose such an ultimatum.

“I’m sorry,” A part of her withdrew deep inside herself and in response, the Leviathan rose to its full height and walked over to the small group. It nudged her side with its snout urging her to rise as if it were time for them to leave. Marissa, instead, placed her hand atop its head in a wordless request to wait.

“Just as you leaned on me, I too leaned on you. Your strengths and experiences are what I lean on in times of uncertainty or when I’m scared. I use to, and at times still do, consider myself a duckling following in your shadow trying to catch up. But when I see your joy or excitement when we wear our glamour and for a few hours pretend we are human again, I’m happy being able to share those experiences with you.” Things she hadn’t felt joy in for many years felt new and exciting again.

“I understand why you waited to tell me if you had said anything early on I would have undoubtedly defected. Fifty-percent chance of remembering my family was good enough for me to take a chance. But the more involved we got the harder it would have been to leave.” Wolframite was the unknown factor in the equation and when placed upon the judge’s scale the two sides evened out as he became a reason for her to stay. Perhaps that was by design, with how selfish and greedy he could be, but Marissa couldn’t fault him for it because if the roles were switched she might have done something similar.

“There’s another option…” Finally, she lifted her gaze and took his offered hand.

“Before we agreed to this trial relationship I gave you the choice of going back to the way things were. All I ask is that you please keep your other promises to me. That we will continue to make new memories and rebuild the house we found together. We can have separate rooms, that’s fine. I just… don’t want to be alone again.” She had Tinaksite and Lopezite as friends but they were humans still with lives that existed primarily in Destiny City. Eventually, she would no doubt withdraw from them if left alone too long.

He held the hand gently, staring at it a long moment. There would be no strong ties holding Marissa to make any decision dependent on how it affected him if they pushed away and maintained a distance of friendship only. It would keep her in his realm but not shackle her to him with intimacy and strong feelings. The bonds and responsibilities would be lighter of a burden on her. Leaving was not a option he wanted. The very idea of it, while it probably would liberate her completely of him and set her on a path to reclaim her old life again, was not one in his best interest. With a sickening sense of his own greed, he saw that option of her desertion of the Negaverse as one with such repugnance and anger that he would tear the world reclaiming her back.

And it was what made the decision even more clear, and the wolf over him opened it's maw, and he could hear it's low growl washing over him. It was one of hunger.

"I don't want that." He said, gripping the hand in his. "I don't want any of this to go back. To separate our rooms. Our lives. I don't want to be without it."

And he looked up, the color glimmering back in his eyes. Pools of forest green. "Without you."

Outside the dreamscape, tears fell freely from Lavendulans icy colored eyes and onto his ears and top of Wolframite’s head. She held him close, combing fingers through his damp hair as she tried her best to keep her breathing calm and even.

Relief… Joy… and some other unnamed feelings were all rolled into a tangled ball of emotions.

This relationship of there was ******** up in so many ways. Greedy for one another’s attention and affection they were both manipulative of the other. Yet, despite the secrets they kept, he knew her more intimately than anyone in her previous life. Aside from their initial spar he had never done anything to intentionally physically harm her. If anything she felt the safest when he was around especially when he would drape a paw or his tail over her while she slept.

In the mindspace, Marissa lifted his hand and brushed her lips across the back of his knuckles. “Will I be enough?” She glanced at the wolf beside him then back into his fathomless green eyes. “I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. I don’t share well. We’re not just human, we’re part youma and you said it better than anyone… that youma are simple in their desires if they want something they take it.”

“But are we… will I… be enough, or will you need more than I have given?” Although he was what she both wanted and needed going forward, there was no hiding her major insecurity that shown brightly with that question.
