“Bramble, nettle, frog feet, thorn.”
Chant squirmed through the thick tangle of blackberry thorns, ears pressed close to her head and eyes squished tight. Sharp pricks pinched at her skin, sinking into her deep fur to bite at her flesh. The deep parts of the Tanglewood were no place for a rabbit, but Chant needed supplies and she wasn’t going to get them sniffing daisies and basking in sunshine.
Her whiskers brushed an ugly set of thorns and she tucked herself to the left, squeezing through the tight knot with hearty kicks that sent sharp pangs through her haunches as the thorns snagged her. With one last heave and a grunt of effort she flopped through, landing in a heap on a patch of yellow, sun-starved grass.
She shook herself off, nibbling away dried leaves and the nettle needles that clung to her ruff.
“Bramble, nettle, frog feet, thorn,” she huffed. She extracted a single blackberry thorn from where it had shallowly punctured her withers and tucked it neatly in her thick chest hair. That would do.
All lot of trouble for a potion she wasn’t sure would work, the darned finicky things. But she would show that hawk. Eyeballing her as she went about her business eating sweet grass and clover blossoms. Watching her like she was a plump and juicy berry, ripe for the picking. No bird would make a meal out of her, she’d make certain of it.
“Frog feet,” she hissed, rising up on her hind legs to survey her surroundings. It was dark this deep in the wood, and cool too despite the summer heat. Birds chirped and flitted back and forth, rustling the leaves. A good sign no predators were around… for now.
But it also drowned out the sound of any other animals in the underbrush and Chant needed to track down some frogs.
“Blasted birds.”

While it was generally frowned upon for a scout of the Highwall Warren to go out alone - never mind going out as far as she was right now - unusual times called for unusual measures. Whispers had made their way to her warren of terrible sickness and strange rabbits fleeing great monsters from unknown lands; exactly the sort of thing Highwall had been founded to protect against.
So here she was, days away from the warren and completely alone, marching through the Tanglewood in search of both innocents to rescue and information to bring back home. Asher would've protested - she had little doubt of that - but the more information that could be gathered the better. And with only two scouts, it'd be a waste to send both of them on the same mission.
And if there were terrible monsters about, this would definitely be where they'd be hiding. She'd been to the Tanglewood plenty of times before, sure, but it just had a... Feeling to it. A dark one. The land itself seemed equally deadly and dreary with its gnarled trees and excess of brambles. Why any rabbit would want to live here was beyond her.
A thump not far from her caused her to freeze, ears perked. While she couldn't make out the words, it sounded like someone was speaking - so not a monster. And hopefully not one of Joxer's rabbits - though the difference between those and a monster could be arguable.
"Who goes there?" She barked, puffing out her chest in an attempt to appear more intimidating before this other rabbit appeared, "Show yourself!"

Chant dropped back down to all fours and hunkered low on the ground before she’d even realized what she was doing. The Tanglewood was a terrible place and while Chant had braved it many times before she’d only survived it by being cautious. Rationality skittered back to her mind, and she registered the non-bird noise as… a voice. Another rabbit, this deep in the wood? Unusual, outside of the brambles where King Joxer’s brood reigned.
“Show myself?” Chant crooned, rising to her feet. She feigned nonchalance to hide her nerves, grooming a patch of hair matted by the nettles. “I’m a sight to behold and not often seen, you should feel honored.”
She cast a glance back at the patch of thorns she’d squeezed herself through. It wouldn’t be easy or quick, but she could wriggle back that way if she was in any danger. Exit strategy in place, Chant rose up again and squinted through the bushes for any sign of tail or toe of the stranger.
“If you want to see me, you’ll have to come much closer.”

Chant’s ears twitched as boughs and twigs rustled at her side. She hunkered down low, backing up against the hole she’d wriggled out of. She had no knowing if this stranger was safe or not and she wasn’t about to take chances, running into an aggressive doe. Hopefully Chant would prove to be smaller and quicker, but if not…
Chant snapped her ears back against her head and crouched, digging her claws into the soft peat.
The other doe burst through the brambles and Chant snapped upright without thinking, back to the thorns, ready to leap. Her heart hammered like bird’s wings in her chest. And then…
They could have been sisters. Chant settled onto her haunches and regarded the doe with narrowed eyes. She’d seen other rabbits with similar coats to herself, but she hadn’t expected to see something so familiar so deep in the Tanglewood.
The fates were with her, then. It must be some sort of sign.
“You’ve found me.” Chant plucked the nettle she’d harvested from her fur and cradled it between her paws. Her heart had not stopped hammering, but she didn’t want to be seen as cowardly now. Time to dazzle and put on a show. “What reason are we meeting for, do you think? I could tell you, if you’d like.”
A little bit of fortune telling was sure to help her mystique.
